  1. Quite a few RPers have no intention on joining a forum. I know I'll be taking about 6 other people wherever I go. I've discussed it with them, and none of them want to be on a legacy server. There is already an unrelated free company that doesn't want to be on a legacy server. There are several others here who don't. If we're snagging 30ish people, we'll end up making our own RP community, and the RP communities really will be completely separate if that ends up happening. This also isn't accounting for a bunch of new players that'll be coming in closer to release, and who knows where they'll go. Some might enjoy the option of going to a place with an established community, but I'm imagining quite a few want to help establish one. And people tend to really enjoy new servers. Will it be as large? No, it probably won't be. I'm actually positive it won't be, but the whole legacy server only attitude with several people not even entertaining the idea of a new server for new people who would want to join it is pretty weird, don't you think?
  2. Literally NO ONE has asked this. Then I must be missing what is being asked...? Please clarify for me, I've been at work all day. x_x New players want an alternative RP server so we don't have to deal with all the issues legacy servers have. We have a moderator telling us to go start our own community now at this point, though, so I guess there's no reason to even discuss it anymore. Kylin: No one here wants people to not have Balmung. No one advocating for a new server for new players is or has said that to any degree whatsoever. We want a secondary server so we don't have to deal with a lot of the legacy issues. That. Is. All. This isn't about not being able to unite on a same server because of friends or something. That's bound to happen. This is something unique to this launch.
  3. You're specifically singling me out. You're accusing me of being hostile. You're threatening to lock a thread directly afterward for people not being professional right after signalling me out. Consider how that seems from my perspective for a few seconds. Consider someone who wants to have another server that's not Balmung and essentially being told by a bunch of legacy players that I shouldn't worry about it while ignoring valid issues to bring up. Consider that everyone seems to be under the assumption that I want everyone to reroll when I've never said anything even close to that. Just, really, think about it for a little bit. Maybe you can see why I'm thinking there's an issue here. And I'm all up for Vee's idea, so I have no idea what you're trying to even do at this point.
  4. Telling people they're not listening is hostile? I'm not insulting anyone, I'm not saying people are wrong, I'm just saying people aren't listening. If that's hostile, then... geeze. You sure you guys are going to be okay for handling any new players?
  5. Actually no one has discussed the gameplay disadvantages, no one has discussed the economic issues, no one has discussed the implications of players who aren't RPers and the sort of mindset they would bring, and I actually did give an in -- seriously, I totally gave an RP hook that could work -- and it was ignored too. You aren't listening. Seriously, you really aren't. You didn't even participate in that thread, so you're telling me people are talking about stuff when I have no idea if you've even read it. Hell, the thread was locked because people considered it as derailing. Also, Vee: I like you. That's more or less what my original post of this whole kerfluffle was about, and look how that turned out. No, I don't, and at no point have I asked them too. I have no idea why people think I have. Probably because they aren't listening.
  6. Well, it's sort of been happening in this thread and the last one, though. There's very much a presence of legacy players who tend to gang up on people and not really listen to thought out things or act dismissive. Like even this, I've brought up concerns and I'm simply being told "Oh, it won't be that big of a deal, you just need to try it and you'll see." Which, well, no, it won't be. I have experience in this. It's not just going to disappear, especially when legacy players are just dismissing concerns. I did play on Balmung. I probably interacted with a few of you. It's not nearly as simple as you make it out to be, and that by and far, none of my concerns have been addressed directly is really just sort of solidifying my position.
  7. I've sort of noticed one, to be honest, but it could just be different perspectives.
  8. This is actually what turns me off legacy servers the most. I don't want to have to come into a world where everyone already has all their connections established and people favored. It's hard as hell to get involved when you have to deal with everyone who's already got everything down and have talked so much. I don't want to have to deal with player lore quite honestly! As for split character, no, I tend to RP while doing things. I'm not much for a stand around and RP person 100% of the time. I actively like to fight and quest while RPing with someone.
  9. I was hoping for a designated RP server, both new and legacy, so I wouldn't be kinda pressure into an unofficial one. I really don't want to be on a legacy server, though....
  10. 38. I haven't decided on whether or not she's taken the time skip, though. Leaning toward yes. It really depends on how Arcanist lore is filtered through. I can't very well have her be primarily an Arcanist if Arcanists didn't exist at all until during those five years.
  11. Being as I'm about as gay as a unicorn dancing under a double rainbow with a bunch of fairies, flowers, and probably a few scented candles with just a bit of flannel, Winter is going to be rather gay. Sadly (by which I mean not sadly at all) my player tendencies are going to reflect a bit in my character if I play her for so long. My experiments with playing bisexual (and one or two straight) characters always left me feeling a bit on the "eeeeh" side. Races, well, probably any, though, again, I'm sure my own biases will show, and some roegadyn woman will totally catch my eye. Also Major kudos.
  12. I can definitely agree to disagree. I'm just not a fan of someone blatantly misrepresenting what I say, but I figure at that point, there's really no point in continuing as there isn't any good faith left. Also, as a note for people who are saying semantics don't matter, I think you're speaking from a very odd position. Of course semantics matter. What words mean is intrinsic to the start of any discussion, otherwise everything you say is entirely meaningless.
  13. I actually think a better solution would have been based on a question like "How affluent is your character?" It gives far more options too. Very affluent for those rich bastards. Quite affluent for those very well off. Somewhat Affluent for those that have more than enough wealth to meet their needs and afford pretty much whatever with some planning. Not very affluent to those who live -maybe- have a permanent residence. Not at all affluent to those who lack pretty much any semblance of money whatsoever. And as a bonus: In debt. It's more specific and much more useful information, I'd think.
  14. Some people are certainly going to be normal citizens within RP, but I also extensively mentioned where they weren't. And I think it's incredibly weird you'd try to equate adventurers with slave. Like, that's not only bizarrely wrong, that's pretty offensive on top of it. Slaves are people without power, agency, who don't receive pay, and more importantly, who are horribly oppressed. Equating adventurers -- people who slay monsters, do odd jobs, and otherwise act as mercenaries -- to slaves is just... incomprehensible tbh. There are tons of implications around that show the company taking care of you as a member. I think trying to imply that they don't is really backwards and odd too. If they're gearing you up, they're feeding you and helping you with lodgings. My overall issue with using class is it becomes entirely meaningless to use it in this context. It would be better, much better, to describe their situation and leave it at that. Trying to put them into specific, studied socioeconomic categories that they plainly do not fit in -- half the people with lower class characters so far -- in a society that doesn't parallel our own where class doesn't seem to have a real concept in it can only generate confusion. Also, irony for telling people not to dwell on specifics and then correcting someone as your very first point. ^5 (Though, I really think not paying to specifics of a setting just leads to more confusion later down the line to begin with, so thanks for the correction, I was using a really old term I heard around the alpha of 1.0 and it stuck with me.) Upperclass is very easy to define, and that's probably why you went to that definition for it. The owners of production are almost always going to be upperclass by virtue of, well, everything, but the sheer involvements of guilds would be likened more to a monopolistic union. I think it's a highly important part for learning about everyone's roles in the world. You know. So they can actually play. I find it weird, and very odd, that you reject the idea of Eorzea being pre-industrial because it doesn't parallel our own culture while in a thread that uses an inherent part of our culture -- you know, class hierarchy. Anyways, Eorzea, or at least everyone but the Garleanininings, are most definitely pre-industrial. There's very little machinery to think of. There's no factories. It's, by definition, pre-industrial. The Garlean Empire is most definitely industrial. That's sort of a huge point about their military might, what with all their mechanized infantry. The Garlean Empire even uses a parallel of a nuclear bomb.
  15. I don't think wealth classes are an appropriate measure of -anything- in a pre-industrial city-state based society. Most people here are putting lower class because they aren't begging, but they aren't particularly pained for money either. Well, in our current society, that would be considered middle class. In a pre-industrial society, that means you're affluent and have stable, well paying work that isn't manual labor. Realize, the lower class is defined -- at least in our and most societies throughout history -- as either serfs, slaves, or those who struggle and toil just to make due and could greatly need assistance. In a rich, frontier like world like Haiderin -- at least most likely -- and Eorzea specifically, we all qualify, almost inherently, as mercenaries, adventures, gathers, or craftsmen. If you're a Thaumaturge or Conjurer, you're educated and powerful. If you're a gladiator, lancer (and possibly marauder) you're trained and have a way of maintaining your equipment. Trained soldiers were -not- part of the lower class in history. Military men are generally paid well or have a tangible service to sell, keeping them firmly in at least a middle class. Pugilists, archers, and marauder can be a bit different depending on a few things, like being bandits, but bandits aren't really part of a class system, are they? We don't really have to go over craftsmen and gatherers, do we? I think it would be more apt to ask on degrees of wealth at the start. Class is lifestyle, it's made of your residence, your job, and your future outlooks, and it requires a society based around class, whereas, at least in 1.0 and Gridinia, most places seem to be a heavily socialized, union based society that would mitigate most ideas of class altogether. So where would I put my character? Well, Winter Dawn -- assuming the name isn't taken, in which case I'll have to be more creative -- will likely be affluent seeing as the aim is to be a learned arcanist and weaver and is capable of taking care of herself in the wilderness. tl;dr: I (pretentiously) explain why (I think) class is a poor descriptor and doesn't make sense in Eorzea. (IMO) Instead, (I believe) we should be more concerned about how to integrate ourselves into the world economically in a reasonable fashion. :moogle: Of course, your character can always just be dreadful with money and gambles/spends it away.
  16. I'm the only Roegadyn female so far. T_T
  17. Well geeze, it looks like I found a bit more interest than I anticipated. I was actually considering rolling on a brand new server so I could uncover and discover things for myself, buuut I might change my mind now.
  18. -kl4hJ4j48s ...ahem. So, with that out of the way. I'm kind of planning a very in game, in character wise, Explorers'/Treasure Hunters' Company. The world has changed, and massively, and there's new fauna and flora to document. There are artifacts lost because of land shifts, entire areas reopened and reawakened. Seems like something fun. How's everyone else going to deal with the whole world changing IC?
  19. To be honest, if you're looking to save a bit of money, an i7 is overkill for everything game related. I don't know if FFXIV is properly optimized to notice more than 4gb or RAM, but idk. Graphics card will be pretty important, buuuuut. This game runs on pretty mediocre hardware too, in my experience. You're going to get a much better performance just in general.
  20. Staaahpit, there's only one correct response to this!
  21. D'awww--I mean, yes, I'll make sure to do that. Shining Force 2 was my legit first -- and what inspired me to learn to read! -- because I didn't manage to track down FFIV until years later when a video rental store went out of business.
  22. Hi. No. Really, that's about it. Hi. What's up? Salutations. Hello, How are you? My name's Lily. I realize this makes my username seem soooo great. I've played Final Fantasy for pretty much my entire life. One of my first memories is that music and text scroll of Final Fantasy IV on the SNES. It's no surprise I'm pretty much a raging Square Enix fangirl, but even I didn't stick with 1.0. I bought it, of course, and I played it, of course, but it was far too wince inducing to really get into that hard. I played it a bit while it was free, but I can't proclaim to know the world all that well. I'll probably spend a significant amount of time leading up to re-release bugging people about lore nuggets. --MMORPG background Started with Final Fa--psyche, Asheron's Call. Then Runescape, then Final Fantasy XI, then City of Heroes, then FFXI again, then WoW again, then Warhammer (ohgodwhy), then Aeon, then FFXI again, then WoW again, then a bunch of F2P MMO, then GW2, and now I'm somehow in a casual raiding guild for WoW. I don't even know. --RP experience When I was, like, four, I ran around making up superheroes and playing them out with my cousins. It didn't get better. I'm addicted. Have been for my entire life. --Character ideas/info Roegadyne Arcnist/Archer/Bard/something with a survivalist/explorer point of view. Going the absolute reverse of myself, so calm, measured, rational, and easy to work with. Will expand on after immersing myself in more info. --How did you learn about the coalition? My ability to track down information is a dark legend that librarians pass down as an oral tradition. --What kind of a role-player are you aiming to be? Light, medium, or heavy? Heavy. --Anything from real life youâre comfortable with sharing? (Work, school, hobbies, etc) I'm a writer by trade. Mostly crummy adverts and resume making along with some other related oddjobs. I've done a lot of weird jobs over my life. Also, forgive me for the bizarre intro. It's only 10AM. I'm not thinking straight, especially with this :moogle: adorable thing at the edge of my vision.
