  1. Looks like you have a good start to a story going there. It's very sad that her sisters died.
  2. Chocolate - not just for the outside anymore Strawberries are my favorite fruit. If it weren't for chocolate, they'd probably be my favorite food. Happily, the two go really well together! Funny strawberry story: my family loves to go strawberry picking. It's the kinda thing where you bring a big basket, and the owner of the farm weighs your baskets on the way out and you pay for whatever you picked. One year when my brother and I were really young, we went picking with my parents and grandparents. On the way into the farm, my grandpa told us that they would weigh us on the way out to figure out how many we had eaten and charge us for them. Neither of us ate a single berry that day while we were picking!
  3. Lots of the different Free Companies and linkshells are holding events and driving recruitment right now. Whichever server you choose, you should be able to find ample opportunities. The Legacy players are making big efforts to open up their RP to new players, and there's a strong new community presence for Gilgamesh building here as well in anticipation of phase 4.
  4. It's likely intended that way so you can experience both storylines.
  5. More Keepers, yay! Myxie Tryxle is actually a name I made up for a gnome artificer cohort I had in an Eberron game way back when it first came out in D&D 3.5. It was one of those games where the cohort eclipsed my primary character because my primary was the healer and the group only ever wanted me to healbot them. When 1.0 hit, I decided to reuse that character idea from the cohort since that D&D game only lasted a couple months, and I always felt she never got enough play. I didn't really know anything about naming conventions back then, but I never really got into 1.0 (like so many others). Now that ARR is coming, I'm resurrecting the character again. While the name doesn't seem like it deviates significantly from lore since she is female, in her backstory I'm having her change her name from her birthname of Mikhi Trikhel to Myxie Tryxle. The way an actress might when she moves from small town USA to Los Angeles, since the Miqo'te "H" sound is difficult for others to pronounce, and she wants to become a famous inventor and business woman. It's hard to market a brand 70% of the people can't pronounce Other characters from her backstory have names like Grendar Trikhel and Ori'to Khiraya. I prefer to invent my own names for my characters, but I can see the appeal of an "old family" name. Looking forward to meeting you in game, and welcome to the community.
  6. Now that is really cool! All the more reason I wish my old account was Legacy.
  7. Someone just made me aware of this thread by Merri which seems to include a lot about diseases and pharmacology in the lore.
  8. Thanks, Eva. You're mirroring my own sentiment. While I'm not sure if my posts are making waves, I did try to rock the boat a little to get discussion going. I find it gets people talking. Hopefully no one felt like I was stepping on toes (or throwing out a beloved thread-worn sofa). For those other new players like me who are itching to learn more about the story of 1.x and its lore, I would suggest checking out Merri's post on "A comprehensive look at the Seventh Umbral Era story arc," which I just discovered. For some reason when I saw that before in the RP Discussion forum, I thought it was about ARR, not 1.x, so I didn't read it because I didn't want spoilers. The calendar in this setting is very confusing to me for some reason.
  9. Actually, this post stems from an interesting difference I realized based on your post on one of my other threads. It seems to me that the 1.x players and the new ARR players (in which I'm including myself because I only played 1.0 for two months after it released) are on different pages. Looking back through my previous threads, I found a trend based on the join date listed under the information on each poster's placard. The newer members who joined in the last few months were a lot more likely to join in on the speculation or post/PM their appreciation for the discussion. The older members were more likely to try to reign in or discourage the discussion or just not post at all. I came to the realization that this community is going through growing pains. Ideas that are fresh and interesting to us newer players may be concluded or jaded to the older players. So I'm trying to bridge that gap a little and appreciate the older players' point of view as well as clear up some of the lore I missed from 1.x. For example, before posting this poll, I had no idea that characters were time-warped or that the amnesia was only partial. I thought the whole thing was a reboot and wondered how the older players would deal with that considering several years of RP history in their character's backgrounds. It's been enlightening. Or that he's bizarro Cid and can't be trusted! >.>
  10. Thanks everyone. That's very enlightening. Part of my confusion was in talking to my roommate about FFXI, which she played a lot more than I ever did, she said that in that game male Mithra were about 1% of the population and locked away in secret locations because they were far too valuable to the survival of the species to have running around. Just remembered the other question I had about this, if it's not a reboot, how are people dealing with this notion of total world affecting amnesia. This notion that no one remembers any of these "Heroes of Light" who mysteriously must have dealt with the problems that culminated five years ago. Surely there must be plenty of character journals, inn ledgers with signatures, receipts for custom weapons/armor from the guilds, etc. to indicate exactly who such people were. Are people just ignoring that notion of everyone's forgotten 1.x characters?
  11. As far as clarifying my own post, that is what I'm asking. First I'm not sure if it's a breach of 1.x lore. Second, and the question for the poll, has the ARR lore overwritten the 1.x lore in any case where there may be a conflict?
  12. I posted my first storyline for Myxie, Impressions and Memories, last night. Today I realized that it may be a breach of lore depending on how people are viewing the transition from 1.x to ARR. While I imagine this is more of a matter of individual interpretation, and that the old players will likely lean towards one option and new players towards another, I wanted to run a poll none-the-less. The question is, how are people dealing with lore discrepancies between the two versions? To get more specific, I used an adult male Miqo'te as well as a twelve year old male Miqo'te in my story, which is set many years in the past and before the timeline transitioned. Is this a breach of the lore under 1.x lore (for you old lore buffs)? If it isn't, what if a scenario did occur where someone was writing a story in the past before the time jump that breached the 1.x lore but was fine in ARR lore? I guess what I'm asking is should the 1.x lore carry over for stories and events that happened within its timeline, or is this a full reboot and the new lore (like Miqo'te males and Roegadyn females existing significantly) roll backwards into stories set within the previous timeline?
  13. I really like what you guys are doing. I'm looking forward to meeting some members of the K tribe in RP.
  14. I think what Kaze was pointing out is that there is a small branch of the family that did cross-breed with Keepers at one point, so if you want to play a Keeper and still be involved in the Hipparion tribe, there's a place for that. Oh that's awesome! Yeah I am waiting for the appearance software to come out on the 1st, to see how she'd look as a keeper. If I can't reproduce that look, then she will stay a seeker It may help alleviate your fears a little to know that I did this with a Roegadyn idea I was playing around with on the beta. I was able to make identical characters as either a sea wolf or a hellsguard. The color palettes, hairstyles, faces, pretty much everything seemed to exist identically under both subraces. For Miqo'te, the eyes and tails may be different, as those are noted differences between the subraces, but if they're like the Roegadyn, the lion's share of options should be the same.
  15. We've had debates about the prevalence and availability of alchemical cures and healing magic on other threads before, leading to a wide range of interpretation as to the medical application of spells like Esuna. My guess would be that many environmental factors like communicable diseases, it's likely they would be alleviated or even cured by Esuna. Diseases like tetanus and botulism are the result of toxins building up in the body and attacking certain cell types. Even if esuna didn't cure the disease, it would alleviate the buildup of toxins and reduce the severity of symptoms or the likelihood of death. Other diseases, like viruses, attack cells directly, high-jack the inner workings, and destroy the cell in order to reproduce the virus. If Esuna isn't a cure all for communicable diseases, it would likely have little effect in these cases because toxins aren't the issue. Rather it's loss of cells (like white blood cells in the case of HIV). When it comes to genetic diseases, that's where I think you'll see the most need. If your stance is that magic helps return the body to homeostatis or its normal function, then genetic diseases would be unaffected because they're hardwired into the patient's biology. Again, this could vary based on the disease (Huntington's and Alzheimer's for example lead to a buildup of toxic proteins in the brain that slowly kills off brain cells leading to impair of function and eventually death). I doubt white magic would have any effect on diseases like cancer, diabetes, cystic fibrosis, androgen insensitivity, or chromosomal disorders like Downs Syndrome or Kleinfelter's. Also, when it comes to genetic diseases, you have a compounding factor known as "founder effect." The idea here is that when you have a small population moving to a new area and colonizing it, it is likely that for the first few generations you're going to see an over-expression of any recessive disease traits that happened to exist within the small population of colonists. For example, there is a group of Amish in Pennsylvania that is well known for the incidence of polydactyly and dwarfism, because among their founders was someone with the gene for polydactyly and someone with the gene for dwarfism. Consequently, they have the world's highest concentration of six fingered dwarves. Considering that four of the five races in Eorzea are transplants, one would expect founder effect to be prevalent, at least in the smaller communities. Additional types of medicine I don't feel would be covered by white magic as it is presented: psychology/psychiatry, cosmetic surgery, physical therapy, preventative medicine, obstetrics/midwife, and likely more (I don't know that much about medicine aside from watching House). Personally, I can see a lot of use for a doctor in Eorzea. White magic generally seems to cover mostly emergency medicine and poison control sorts of issues, possibly infectious disease depending on how technical you wish to get. I'll clarify a little about founder effect, as reading it over I seem to have described it poorly. Founder effect can occur with any trait, dominant or recessive, disease, benign, or beneficial. It just comes up most often when you talk about the prevalence of genetic diseases. Polydactyly and dwarfism aren't diseases, but they are genetic traits.
  16. I just update her wiki page to include the inventions she has revealed in character. I wrote that page before doing any RP with her in the last phase of beta, so it's updated now with the ideas she put forth in play with other characters. Totally unrelated, but FFXIV needs an inventor/engineer type Disciple of the Hand class. That was always my favorite profession in WoW and no other game has really done it. I don't think the outlandish type stuff they make in WoW would be fitting, but the theme of making crazy inventions (or even Magiteck) would be awesome. We have fishing which is a DoL class that pretty much serves no purpose other than as a hobby, an inventory DoH class could serve the same roll, creating minions, or fun novelty items. Anyways, sorry for going off topic. I think most of the things you catch while fishing will be useful for cooking. Several of the other professions use materials like "Fish Glue" which are made from fish. I don't think it will be pure mini-game/hobby. I think their announcement that fishing won't be valuable was more to alleviate fears that fishing will be necessary for anyone who wants to make money in the game like it was in FFXI. Fishing will be useful but not essential. As for engineering, all the funnest characters I ever roleplayed in WoW were engineers, which is probably why Myxie is an inventor. Her inventions are a little outlandish, but I'm also drawing inspiration from characters like Q in James Bond. If a PC courier service does get off the ground, Myxie would definitely use it for her business correspondence. Even if she didn't have a distrust for moogles, I wasn't aware that the mail system only worked with your friends list.

  18. Yes, could all the Garlean spies please hold up their hands? We promise not to look. I did come up with this concept in another thread while considering just what type of Miqo'te tribe might practice infanticide: If anyone wishes to use that idea for their own character or an NPC, feel free. I have no plans for it, just something I brainstormed up.
  19. Myxie doesn't trust moogles, so I would definitely use this sort of service. Assuming she ever actually perfected a working invention idea to the point that it could sell that is. >.>
  20. Much of the time Myxie would lay her head down on a workbench, probably over some piece or other that she had been drawing or building. Since the day shift at the guilds tends to frown upon vagrancy in the guild hall during prime business hours, she keeps a room at the inn. There's always an apron with several different tools laying around. Though the material within will change based on her latest scholarly pursuits, she always has a few thick books as well as a journal and sketchbook handy. She always has a beat up toy chocobo made of tin with fading yellow paint that's been largely worn off sitting on the back corner of her desk.
  21. (( Note: Myxie Tryxle's tribal name growing up was Mikhi Trikhel. She modified it later to be more pronounceable and sound more marketable. In case it isn't clear, she is eight years old in this story. )) Mikhi sat with her back to a large maple tree next to a foot path through the shroud. She held a bottle in her hand. Turning it around to look down the neck, she sniffed it inquisitively. It smelled like rainwater and mud where she had found it lying next to the road. As she rotated it in her hands and wondered what wondrous elixir it must have contained, the rainwater leaked out through a crack in the side, dripping onto her tail. She gasped at how cold it was, leaping into the air and shaking her hind end furiously to dry off her fur. It was then she noticed a stifled laugh behind her. She whirled around, one hand going to the knife on her belt. Peeking around the base of the tree she had just been lounging upon was a large, male Miqo’te. He wore rugged leathers and worn boots, but his hair was clean and combed back. The soft moonlight reflected from his eyes, and his chuckle turned into a full-fledged laugh complete with a slap to the knee. The intense look on Mikhi’s face gave way to a look of confusion as she examined her stalker. After a moment, she relaxed. “Uncle Ori’to?” She stared at his clean and trimmed hair. The man took a deep breath and composed himself, stepping away from the tree. “You looked like a regular wild cat, Mikhi. Ferocious!” “Uncle Ori’to!” Mikhi squeeled with glee and ran forward, wrapping her arms around his legs. Suddenly, something dawned on her, and she let go. Looking directly up at his face, she slapped him across the knee. “You missed my birthday!” she accused. Ori’to stared back at her with an apologetic grin. “Three months late eight years in a row! I’m such a terrible Uncle.” As he said it, he reached back to a pouch on the side of his knapsack and pulled out a small package wrapped in brown paper and tied with string. He held it out to her, and Mikhi’s frown immediately gave way to a wide grin. She took the gift in one hand and grabbed Ori’to’s hand in the other. “You’re my favorite Uncle!” Mikhi beamed as she led him back through the woods to the Trikhel homestead. A small cluster of rough-hewn log cabins sat against the towering backdrop of a stone cliff in the forest. Mikhi let go of the man’s hand and bounded over the log bridge spanning a small creek. As Ori’to followed, Mikhi’s cousin Sondar’a noticed them and ran up to give their Uncle a hug. Turning to Mikhi, Sondar’a leaned in close and whispered. “The Grinder’s been lookin’ for ya.” Mikhi blanched for a moment but tried to look calm as she rounded the corner of the matriarch’s cabin. Her grandmother sat on an old wooden rocking chair, slowly rocking back and forth while punching holes into a piece of leather she was working. As their eyes met, Mikhi could see a look of sympathy on the old matriarch’s face even as she heard her sister Rhassal’s voice from the window of their cabin. “Ma! Mikhi comin’ home.” Mikhi glared at Rhassal through the window, but Rhassal just smirked back. “MIKHI TRIKHEL!” Mikhi’s tail curled down between her legs and her ears folded back as a shudder ran down her spine. Her mother’s tirade began before she could even be seen through the doorway of the cabin, but she could certainly be heard throughout the camp. “Mikhi I told ya to get those dishes washed up before ya went off wastin’ time in the woods!” Grendar Trikhel appeared in the doorway, a wooden spoon clenched in her fist like a club. For a moment she stopped to stare at Ori’to, but quickly advanced to where Mikhi was standing. “Raise yer tail,” the older woman demanded. “But, momma…” Mikhi protested, turning back to look at Ori’to. He gave her a sympathetic smile but didn’t interfere. “Raise. Your. Tail!” Mikhi did as she was told. A loud crack echoed around the common area three times as Grendar slapped her three times across the buttocks with the wooden spoon. Tears streaked down Mikhi’s face with each blow. “Now get inside and do yer chores,” ordered Grendar. “Uncle Ori’to and I need to talk.” Mikhi trudged to the cabin crying. Behind her, she could hear her mother turning attention to the male Miqo’te. “Yer late,” she said, pointing the spoon at Ori’to’s face. “We need yer help up on the cliff. Some of them boulders are comin’ loose from the big freeze last winter. I don’t wanna wake up this winter with a hundred pound rock on my head.” Ori’to chuckled and leaned in to give Grendar a peck on the cheek. For a moment, she blushed. “It’s good to see you as well, Grendar.” Mikhi lifted the package in her hand. She hadn’t realized before how heavy it was for something so small. Most everyone was gathered around the fire pit in the common area to see what she had. Even Momma was there smiling. Mikhi wished Uncle Ori’to would visit more often, if for no other reason than that it put Momma in a good mood. Finally her aunt appeared around the fire and nodded to her. Mikhi pulled on the string and tore the paper open. Several of her cousins leaned in to see what it was. In her lap was a small tin box. She opened it and pulled out a small mechanical toy. It was a brightly painted bird with large legs and a pronounced beak. Grendar gave Ori’to a scowl when she saw what it was, but Mikhi stared at it in wonder. “What is it?” she asked, looking to Ori’to with wide eyes. “It’s a chocobo,” he answered, ignoring the older woman’s disapproving glance. Mikhi whistled and turned back to examine the toy. “So this is what those city folks ride. I never seen one before. They don’t ride ‘em down our little trails.” “There’s more,” said Ori’to as he reached for the toy. He gently picked it up and turned the tail feathers in a circle several times before placing the toy on the ground. It jolted to life, taking a few steps away from the campfire and making a chirping sound while opening and closing its beak. Mikhi stared in wonder as several of the other children squealed in delight. Mikhi grabbed the toy and threw her arms around Ori’to’s neck, the bird still chirping in his ear. “Thank you, Uncle. I love it!” “You’re welcome, Mikhi,” he responded, returning her hug and smiling. “Happy Birthday.” The next evening, as the others were rousing from their slumber, Mikhi was already awake and sitting at the table. Strewn in front of her was a collection of small mechanical parts along with several yellow panels that made up the sides of the chocobo toy. She could see that the sun was going down and began concentrating on how to put the toy back together when she suddenly heard her sisters stirring in their cots nearby. Looking up, she could see Rhassal staring at her in the dwindling light. “What’re ya doin’?” asked Rhassal with a yawn. Mikhi began quickly picking up the pieces and dropping them into the toy’s tin container. It made a terrible racket, rousing their youngest sister Aylee who began whining about the noise. Rhassal got up and walked towards the table. “I’m not doin’ anything,” Mikhi responded, though she already knew she’d been caught. “Ma’s gonna pitch a fit when she sees this,” taunted Rhassal. Mikhi froze when she heard the door to her mother’s room open. It was a small cabin, with only one private room attached to the larger living area. The girls slept on cots they set out every morning in the larger main room. Mikhi turned to see her mother staring at the table. “Mikhi, did you break your toy?” Momma didn’t sound as mad as Mikhi might have expected. “N-no,” Mikhi stuttered. “I just wanted to see how it worked. I can put it back together.” Grendar frowned as if thinking. In the silence, Aylee got up from her cot and walked over to the table. “They woke me up, and I’m hungry!” whined the child, hitting the table. The small tin box shifted as the table shook and fell to the floor. Small metal and wood toy parts flew in every direction. Mikhi watched in horror, trying to keep track of where they all went, but there were too many for her to count. She fell to the floor and started picking them up when she heard a sickening crunching sound followed by a loud yelp of pain. Uncle Ori’to leaned down to pick a broken toy part out of his foot. “What’s going on out here?” “Mikhi broke the fancy toy you bought her,” said Grendar as she continued to frown. Mikhi was aghast. She looked from her mother to Aylee and back again. “Aylee broke it!” Mikhi protested. “I had all the parts and could put them back together!” “If ya hadn’t taken it apart, it wouldn’t be broken.” Grendar turned and disappeared back into her bedroom. Mikhi stared in disbelief. Rhassal just smirked and set to getting dressed for the night. Aylee sat down at the table and played with her tail, occasionally looking up to see if anyone was fixing her something to eat. Only Ori’to stood as shocked as Mikhi, then bent down to start collecting the toy parts as tears welled up in Mikhi’s eyes. “It’s okay, dear,” he comforted. “We’ll get all the parts together in the box, and I’ll see if I can fix it.” Mikhi and Ori’to spent fifteen minutes trying to find all the parts strewn around the room while the rest went about starting their night. They found most of the parts, and while the toy still looked like a chocobo, the tail had been crushed, and it never walked or chirped again. Several weeks later, Mikhi heard something outside and walked out into the common area between the cabins. A cool autumn wind was blowing, rustling piles of fallen leaves. Uncle Ori’to stood next to the fire pit, with Mikhi’s mother, aunt, and grandmother crowding around him. Mother seemed to be upset about something, and the other children were coming out to see what the commotion was about. “Ya can’t leave now, Ori’to,” Grendar declared. “Winter’s comin’ early, and we could use yer help with provisions.” Ori’to frowned, obviously torn. “That’s the reason I have to go. I can’t risk being snowbound here. I have a promise to keep.” Grendar growled a little, then turned to see the children approaching. “What promise could be more important to you than family?” she demanded, motioning towards the gathering children. Ori’to’s ears lowered, and for a split second he averted his eyes. Mother’s eyes went wide for a moment but soon her scowl returned with renewed zeal. “So that’s it, is it? You’d choose him over us?” She stared at Ori’to accusingly. Mikhi had never seen Ori’to angry before. His ears stood straight up, his teeth were bared, and his voice was harsh. “Don’t you dare make me choose. I made him a promise!” Mikhi turned to Sondar’a who had crept up next to her to see what was happening in the clearing. “Who are they talking about?” Mikhi whispered. Sondar’a considered Mikhi for a moment, trying to decide what to say. In the end, he just spoke the name. “Grendar’a.” Mikhi’s ears shot straight up. She turned back to the adults, and despite the tense situation looked directly at Ori’to and shouted. “You’re going to see Grendar’a? Take me with you!” Everyone in the clearing froze when they heard her words. Aylee and Rhassal also perked up, until they saw their mother’s posture. Grendar’s right ear twitched, then both ears slowly swiveled to point backwards at Mikhi. Her tail was rigid and upright, and her hands were clenched into fists. Mikhi was oblivious to this as her attention was focused on Ori’to. He sighed as his eyes turned to look at her. Mikhi was surprised by how quickly the anger drained from his face. In its place was a profound look of sadness. “Mikhi, you know I’d love to –“ Ori’to was cut short by a terrible growl from Grendar. “Don’t. You. Dare!” Without turning away from Ori’to, she yelled back at Mikhi. “Mikhi, go in the cabin.” Mikhi now recognized her mother’s anger, but her desire to see her brother after two years apart made her bold. “I want to go with Uncle Ori’to and see Grendar’a.” A deep, guttural growl issued forth from Grendar’s lips. It was filled with anger that mixed with anguish as the pitch rose. Her voice cracked once as she screamed, in the middle of the word cabin. “Mikhi! Go in the cabin! And you, Ori’to. If you don’t wanna be here then just get the hell out!” Mikhi’s lip began to quiver. She turned back to Ori’to and pleaded one last time. “Uncle Ori’to?” Ori’to’s eyes were locked on Grendar. He tried to look back at Mikhi, but the best he could manage was to stare at her feet. He took a deep breath, letting it out in a sigh. “Mikhi. Mind your mother.” Mikhi began crying. Aunt Sondar came forward to take her hand and lead her back to the cabin while assuring her that everything would be just fine. As they walked through the door, Mikhi turned back to see Ori’to break his gaze from her mother and turn to her grandmother. The matriarch simply nodded. As Aunt Sondar closed the door of the cabin in front of her, Mikhi watched Ori’to walk out of the clearing towards the foot path, with Grendar glaring at him as he went.
  22. Thanks all. Guess I'll find out when I'm actually reading the quests rather than skipping text in the beta because I don't want to spoil anything for when I play through with my friends.
  23. As Aysun pointed out, there is one tribal group, but I agree with what you're saying. I got to level 25 in phase 3 and didn't even know there was a tribal group or where to find them. It would be nice to see a range with some middle ground rather than just the two extremes with tribal being difficult to encounter. That middle ground would be an interesting place for RP storylines to explore, so it may need to be provided by the player base. My own character is going to be a Keeper who grew up rural but runs away to the city in search of fame and fortune. Discussions like this have made me realize that the way I played her in phase 3 was much closer to the city side of the spectrum than the tribal side, so hopefully I can shift my slider back towards being a little bit more wild, and starry-eyed towards the city life.
  24. I'm not talking about miqo'te having weird sex in the streets. I'm talking about them exhibiting tribal behavior like Kimhari in FFX. She's not talking about weird sex in the street either. She's talking about tribal behavior attributed to them directly in the lore of this game, not an unrelated tribe from a previous and unrelated title in the Final Fantasy series.
  25. After looking through the wiki and doing a Google search, I can't find any information on the creation myths of the races of Eorzea. Is there any lore about this?
