Site Suggestion Box

Recommended Posts

Now that the site has been up for a couple days now and dust is settling, I wanted to give people an opportunity to give further suggestions for features/tweaks. Please note, I will NOT completely overhaul anything major at this point. I think everyone is pretty content with the general layout and appearance of things anyway. However, I'm sure there may be some little thing that might bother people that they want added/modified. If so, this is the place to make the suggestion!

You can also report bugs here as well.

I will take everything into consideration, but that doesn't mean I'll go through with it. I may feel it's way too difficult to do, won't flow well with the site, or so on. But I'd at least like to hear ideas anyway just in case I can do something about it.

Hey there!

I am not sure how effective it would be or if its would even work with this forum. Especially since its seems mostly everyone uses Skype. But what about a chat box" or a "Cbox" or a "shout box" on the forum?

I know there are PMs if you want to reach someone and have a conservation or even a "this is my Skype name thing" But I find that Shout boxes are a useful tool that can help on a multitude of levels. An example: If someone is hosting a live RP or a spur of the moment RP and don't want to take up space on the forum they can quickly send out a shout or post in the "chat".

Or it's even useful for sharing quick links or even offering up question and answer commentary for folks. I know I have one on two of the forums I admin and they are also great for new members or guest to get a feel for the site as well as to sort of form or build a camaraderie for the already members.

As I said I know it might not be necessary or useful here, especially because most of you use skype or AIM...but sometimes its nice just to have a built in chat service for people who aren't comfortable sharing their information just yet but want to learn more about their peers.

Just a thought as don't know how well it would work here But figured I would offer up teh suggestion anyway!

Pardon the necropost, but Rosethorne just helped me get back on the site, and I've run into a bit of a bug with the Avatar updating.

There is an option to link to an off-site image, however every time I put something in there, it is adding code to the end that breaks the image.

The first quote is a link to the image; this is from a "rotating image gallery" that basically sends a different picture from the folder each time the address is queried, whether it be because the page it was linked on is refreshed or someone has moved to another page where its linked. This is the first time I've ever had it not work right, which is odd since this is a BB/PHP based site, from the looks of it.

This second quote is what shows up after I save the changes, however I need to note that the numbers after the dateline= section change every time. This is what's causing the image to break. Even entering a "normal" image link is doing this. =(

Hm, that's odd. I'm not really sure what to make of it. I tested your link on a different forum software and it worked fine. I've also sent in a quick request about this to the MyBB team. They seem to have no problems with their script.

For example, one of their admins uses this: http://www.mybbsecurity.net/avatar.php?dateline=1360268291

Even after adding the dateline into the equation, the above link still works in randomizing the avatar. Can you maybe copy/paste the script you're using to generate the avatars?

Also, make sure that /all/ the avatars that your script utilizes are 110x110 (or lower), including that "image not found" one. The auto-resize feature could break the script on these forums. We encountered a similar problem with animated avatars.

I don't own the site the gallery is on, and it's homebrewed. I'll see if the creator of the site has any suggestions or is willing to share the code.

I do know that all the images in the gallery are 110x110, as I just adjusted them down from the 150x150 they were for the old version of this site. I'm not sure what size the image not found icon is, so I'll ask about that as well.

Bit of an update, Kylin. The site owner thinks it might be something on her end; the entire site may be based on PHP BB*, however she's heavily modified it with her own coding all over the place. Once she's done some changes and testing, she'll let me know, and we can go from there; since the code likely isn't adaptable enough to be stolen, I believe she'll give some of it over if nothing works on her end so that we can hand it over to the MyBB team.

In the control panel up in the header, click your username. In the drop down menu, there are two options: "View Today's Posts" and "View New Posts." ^^

Update:

The site owner tweaked some things on her end, and it's working now. Looks like it might have been a minor conflict between her modified PHP BB* and MyBB.

Thanks for looking into it on your end though. =)
