Aetherometers?

So I was looking for more info on what exactly do those little complex devices measure beside the spikes of aether concentration?

 

They seem, depending on their type, to require a certain amount of preparation work, take a certain amount of time to do proper measurements...

 

What else do we know? What do they measure? I seem to remember that sharlayan aetherometers are super accurate and give a lot of info, but maybe I dreamed that...?

Perhaps concentration or pressure, perhaps? I'm not very learned on the matter but if such a thing was around it'd probably be less of an exact science and more of a generalization. A way to see if an area had a lot of aether or only a little bit of it.
