So....about the Azure Dragoon's power source *SPOILERS*

Recommended Posts

So, the Azure Dragoon is chosen by the eye of Nidhogg, right? He is chosen and given the power of the eye. Clearly the power works over long distances because you are Azure Dragooning about while Estinien is holding onto one and the other is on Haldrath's coffin.

One can even argue that the power could still subsist even when Nidhogg is revived as Wyrmstinien because the tie is never broken.

BUT

How are you still Dragooning about now that the eyes have been entirely spent in the summoning of Shinryu? They don't exist anymore, they are gone. Kaput. Do they still exist inside Shinryu and that's how it works?

Aside from videogame mechanics where it would suck if all Dragoons forgot how to Blood of The Dragon after 3.55 but given how the new stormblood abilities seems to be a deepening of that eye connection (Gaze of the First Brood, First Brood includes Nidhogg and Hraesvelgar and others) how is that working?

I guess the job quest will explore that, which makes me sad because I just wanna know about post-war dragoons and their role in Ishgard afterwards

The simple explanation: the Warrior of Light is just that overpowered.

The Eye of Nidhogg doesn't actually grant any abilities; when it's not near Nidhogg, it just serves as a well of aether from which to draw power from. It's basically a big battery, and the Azure Dragoon is chosen as the person who is essentially capable of drawing the most aether from the eye to fuel their abilities.

So ordinary mortals need the Eye to be Azure Dragoons, but the Warrior of Light has a huge volume of aether at their command because...reasons. Really, the Eye choosing the WoL is more of a symbolic gesture than anything else.

One of the running theories is that the Warrior of Light is such a hero that people pray and wish for the Warrior to save them in times of calamity, causing the WoL to draw aether from the land around them--essentially they're a mortal with the power of a primal--which is why they're so powerful.

Either way, WoLs don't need the Eye of Nidhogg's well of aether to fuel their abilities because they're already absurdly powerful in relation to normal people.

Would you be saying then that a normal Dragoon could achieve heavensward skillset abilities if particularly skilled? Or more that these abilities would be impossible without that extra battery? Say, one Geirskogul would be a normal Dragoon's ultimate, final ability but for our WOL he is busting them out 3 times a minute.
