ShinDesoto Posted April 11, 2020 Share #1 Posted April 11, 2020 Hello, all! I'm a fresh new player to FFXIV, and I've played a little bit and I'm enjoying it to the fullest! I saw that in my server (Mateus), there was a lot of RP going on, and I had to research this site. I have ZERO experience in roleplaying in-game, or story knowledge. So I'm hoping I can get a mulligan on structure as I learn how to get around things. I hope to make new friends and lasting memories with you all! :3 2 Link to comment
Moon Type Posted April 12, 2020 Share #2 Posted April 12, 2020 Welcome aboard @ShinDesoto I'm glad you're enjoying your time in FFXIV there's so much to do in this game! RPing adds a layer of player made content and Mateus is indeed a good server for RP events. You can also visit the Balmung server which has a large RP community. Heck, you can visit any server on the Crystal data center! \o/ There are a few restrictions (like not being able to check your mail) but as far as RPing goes you'll be fine. You may have noticed a lot of people using a custom emote command ( /emote ) while RPing. Like many MMOs the game has some character animation commands (/wave /cheer etc. ) but you can also create a custom emote text. Custom emotes won't animate your character but they'll help distinguish your RP actions from regular text posts. As for the lore of FFXIV... my goodness. I scarcely know where to begin! @_@ It's a very fleshed out world, to the point where you could literally have discussions on its laws of physics. This may be a cliche suggestion, and one you've already considered, but checking out some lore videos on YouTube would be a good place to start. You could even listen to them while leveling up crafting or any other content that's not too story intensive. That being said there's story telling and lore in every single quest of this game, I love it! When you first go to your job's guild and they explain the history of the guild to help add some gravity and context to what you're doing? That doesn't go away. Ever. If you decide to plant flowers as a botanist, or try your hand at fishing, the game gives you the option of being treated to lots of information about the setting and its characters. ^.^ When people say things like "take your time" or "don't skip the quests" they're not kidding around. You learn so much from the NPCs while simply playing the game at your own pace. If you ask people which crafting job you should take most will say "all of them". The two major reasons for this is that you can level every job and crafting skill on one character, so you don't have to worry about finding out which one is best, and in FFXIV crafting isn't a waste of your time. You can make good money pretty early, crafting jobs are never rendered obsolete by new content and the developers keep adding cool events that put a spotlight on crafting jobs. They recently added a Fishing Duty and a Gathering Duty which can be joined at relatively low levels. In fact, the fishing duty (Ocean Fishing) can be joined the moment you get your first fishing rod. The Gathering Duty (Diadem) requires level 10 in one of the gathering jobs (fishing, botany or mining). I hope some of this was helpful. I'm going to stop typing because it would be ironic if my post kept you from actually playing the game. Link to comment
ShinDesoto Posted April 12, 2020 Author Share #3 Posted April 12, 2020 Thank you so much! I'll take your words in strides, as I want to learn as much as I can! In fact, I just beat Ifrit moments ago! But I'll take a stab at the gathering jobs I suppose. It seems pretty fleshed out. I'll also see if I can get my RP experience down, since I've seen many players crafting around a huge chunk of people in Ul'dah and the like. Link to comment
Moon Type Posted April 12, 2020 Share #4 Posted April 12, 2020 You're very welcome! If you're rolling on through the main story and other quests by all means continue, the gathering jobs are good for taking a break and they come in very handy if you give crafting a try. I hope the different activities help you to develop ideas for the character you might RP. Link to comment
Thunderbolt300 Posted April 19, 2020 Share #5 Posted April 19, 2020 Building off what Moon mentioned... You're going to feel like you're drinking from a firehose for a while, and honestly, that's to be expected! Don't put a lot of pressure on yourself to soak it all up all at once. There's an insane amount of lore to comb through with the game itself, let alone its applications in RP. That said, the best way to get started on the RP scene is to do a good bit of "lamping." This means just eavesdropping on RP'ers while they RP, even if you aren't, and you'll get a sense for how it works pretty quick (so named for being a street lamp over an RP scene, in other words). Feel free to ask questions as well! Fortunately, the RP servers on FFXIV don't have much of any griefers, so you're not likely to run into them here as much as you might in other games. In any case, welcome aboard to the RPC! o/ Link to comment
ShinDesoto Posted April 22, 2020 Author Share #6 Posted April 22, 2020 Thanks for all the advice. Crafting is fun! And I guess there's a term for what I've been doing, Haha. Still haven't found anyone to RP with though. I guess I'll have to make a post or two, huh? Link to comment
Thunderbolt300 Posted April 26, 2020 Share #7 Posted April 26, 2020 Yeah, eventually, when you feel comfortable with what you've seen, you'll want to join the Mateus and/or Balmung Discords and start reaching out to people. Find an RP Free Company, or make your own independent connections with other players directly. Either option is totally viable! If you connect with independents, usually they have their own circles that you will also link into by consequence. It's almost like a maverick FC. Link to comment
Faye Posted April 27, 2020 Share #8 Posted April 27, 2020 Welcome! I recommend joining some RP focused Discords for the Crystal data center. You can find RP events going on, put out a LFRP post, or answer other people who have posted theirs. Link to comment
