Kylin Posted July 21, 2010 Share #1 Posted July 21, 2010 As I come closer to finishing up the basics of the linkshell section on the main site, I now have to look toward the lore section. The lore section is intended to be a wiki based largely on the data compiled in the Library section of the forums. I did start designing it about a month ago but it hasnât really gone anywhere since then. You can check out how hideous it still is by clicking the link: http://www.ffxiv-roleplayers.com/wiki . Obviously, it would look MUCH better before being officially launched. Hereâs the issue. I know that some linkshells are also creating wikis but Iâm not sure exactly what specific direction, if any, these groups are going in. I know TALE will be having a wiki for lore. Stormguard had mentioned creating a wiki, though Iâm not sure how extensive they plan to be. In addition, AETHER is doing their encyclopedia project. So Iâm hoping these groups (and any others I missed) can come in and explain a little bit about their wikis. The last thing I want to do is put a ton of effort into something that ends up being insanely redundant. Hopefully we can work out how to establish the lore section in a way that's satisfactory to everyone. Link to comment
Shamadconde Posted July 21, 2010 Share #2 Posted July 21, 2010 I'm not in any of those but I do know that Eorzeapedia is a wiki that has a lot of info. I'm just wondering what the other wikis will provide that Eorzeapedia doesn't. Storylines maybe? Link to comment
Aveline Posted July 21, 2010 Share #3 Posted July 21, 2010 T.A.L.E.'s wiki is for lore both in-game and for our linkshell. It's basically a place to keep track of all the flavor text and things that might be overlooked in a wiki like Eorzeapedia's, which has its own use. For instance, in FFXI it was widely assumed that Kazham was the Mithran homeland. Having a lore-specific wiki where RPers could put in the actual information (as I understand it right now the closest hint to the Mithran homeland is "Olzhirya", mentioned in the Wings of the Goddess expansion) would help people maintain consistency with their collaborative storylines. For linkshell purposes, it will be in all likelihood something much more useful 6 months from now than at the start of the game. After a while, especially with people joining and leaving shells or joining multiple shells, etc., it can be hard to keep everything straight--how did the group get founded, who were their foes early on, what exactly happened that one night at the pub in Gridania and why were the police involved, etc. tl;dr: Our wiki is basically just to organize linkshell lore and in-game lore in an easily accessible place for our members and guests to help with story continuity. EDIT: Yeah just wanted to remind you Cas, TALE had offered to donate our wiki (Lorespinner) to the RPC for a general use lore wiki, that is how we found out you had plans already to make one for the RPC. TALE is fine with using Lorespinner just for TALE-related lore and contributing to a larger, general RPC wiki for in-game lore. :approve: Link to comment
ArmachiA Posted July 22, 2010 Share #4 Posted July 22, 2010 We won't be doing a wiki (All of our linkshell lore will be available on our website and forums) and Eorzeapedia seems to be quest related only (Like the FFXIWiki, which is annoying honestly, I like reading lore) I think that FFXIV is deserving of a wiki just like WowWiki. When I first started on WoW I found it a fantastic reference to all lore and was able to build a solid character because of it. I spent hours on it just absorbing the lore and getting some help for quest lines! Honestly, I think it would be in all Linkshells' best interests to work on one wiki, instead of having separate Wiki's of the same things. Lore for the game should be consolidated into one Wiki, while lore for your linkshell in your own. SO CB is willing to help you with your Wiki Castiel, as more people will show up to this site looking for lore, then they will to the CB one Link to comment
Kashemia Posted July 22, 2010 Share #5 Posted July 22, 2010 A wiki would be great, I used to use Wowwiki a lot too back when I started roleplaying, and it's something I've missed in most games so far. And I agree with Armaicha, it would be better to have one big that we can all work together on and share, than a lot of smaller ones. Link to comment
Kylin Posted July 23, 2010 Author Share #6 Posted July 23, 2010 I'm going to be honest. I don't think I'll have the time or energy to finish the wiki anytime soon. The main site and forum stuff is going to keep me occupied for awhile still no doubt. And you know...I'd like to have at least some time to finish working on my characters . Thus if anyone has the design skills, feel free to volunteer to finish the project. I can give access to the wiki directory files with an ftp account and so on. Otherwise, we'll be waiting quite awhile before we get our lore section up. Link to comment
Soren Miren Posted July 23, 2010 Share #7 Posted July 23, 2010 My understanding is that this wiki would consolidate established lore/histories, correct? A.E.T.H.E.R.'s encyclopedia won't be focusing on anything like that, rather it'll be more of a creative work embellishing on what is already there. I don't see there being much, if any, redundancy between the two. I suppose it comes down to whether or not the encyclopedia would be classified as guild-centric lore or not. I'd personally say it is, but at the same time I don't want to stick to that position if people feel our contributions would be better off with the community as a whole. TL;DR: If enough people think 'fanfiction' embellishment upon existing lore is worth sticking on the same site as the official texts themselves, then I'm open to discussing it. Link to comment
Smiling River Posted July 23, 2010 Share #8 Posted July 23, 2010 If anything, I think it'd be cool if lore/history linked to specific accounts within A.E.T.H.E.R.'s encyclopedia. For example, a monster's name would link to the Encyclopedia page where we take a more personal/light-hearted approach to describing it and it's behaviors. Same could be done with places, etc. Link to comment
