mixing lore?

Is it considered alright to mix real lore with final fantasy lore....like a good example is nidhogg he's actually from Norse mythology but in RF the first dragoon was said to stab him in the eye he was said to be from ishgard....which I'm guessing is a final fantasy take on asguard also from Norse mythology....I ask if its alright because I have a really cool idea for a character but there's so little known about ishguard I thought I'd fill in the blanks maybe....is this considered DC blasphemy lol

Well technically you can do anything you'd like.

 

But well, crossing the beams on other types of lore can pose a problem. A lot of people will view you as someone just creating a "special snowflake" character that you want to stand out just for the sake of being unique.

 

Most easy-going people won't pay mind to it, but you WILL encounter players who simply refuse to even interact with you for technically "breaking" lore.

 

EDIT: That said, taking lore with a grain of salt is fine, just be sure to not go TOO out there to avoid anything crazy. Your best bet is to post your story here on the forums actually. Tons of people will be more than helpful with constructive feedback. Good luck!

Mixing lore is frowned upon. Blending different universes is a good way to get conflicting data and a good way to generally mess up things that work perfectly fine on their own.

 

FF has a lot of things based on real world mythologies, like a lot of the Primals, but that's all there is to it: it's just something they used as a starting point to build their own lore.

From what I can tell Ishgard has very little to do with Asgard. It's a theocracy and it seems a bit like a military state where most people are trained to fight dragons since they've been locked in an endless war with them.

 

I'd always say err on the side of caution, Ishgard exists in its current state because it's planned for future content, if you assume too much you'll end up having to retcon when they release more information.

That's what I was afraid of...well I guess ill throw my idea out there the characters name is Gabriel DieAlterEin which is German for the old one the reason I choose German because idk if ancient ishguard had any of its own language you see. What I wanted was to make it so somehow he was actually there when the first dragoon stabbed nidhogg in the eye he was at that battle but got teleported by that old elzean dude when bahamut was he seen a quick flash of bahamut thinking it was nidhogg I wanted gab to kinda mix "the ancient language " (German) lol with normal words the die alter ein thing is what he tell everyone to call him because he learns his age has passed long ago and there u have it lol

Ishgard is primarily Hyur and Elezen I believe, so the names would be mostly French (sounding) or Anglo Saxon, Germanic names in Lore are reserved primarily for the Roegadyn. As far as being there when the first Dragoon took Nidhogg's eye? That was (to my knowledge) ancient history, which would make your character impossibly ancient, and the idea that he was somehow at that event, and then somehow affected by the time warp Louisoux created hundreds of years later seems kind of impossible. Sadly this storyline just doesn't work with the lore without trying to make yourself a total special snowflake.

Define mixing lore.

 

Would people be upset if someone in game started casting a spell and using a runic magic and described how they were weaving things into the elemental runes to ward away something?

 

That's not something that's technically in game. It's sort of your own magical lore situation.

 

What about equipment? Magitek is ostensibly built using equipment -- is it okay to start to "create" objects to do these things; Aetheric Flux Stabilization Wands, Alternating Magitek Drill? Those don't necessarily exist. Heck, how magitek is actually built is pretty much up in the air? What do characters who are a part of that say or do when their jobs come up?

 

Can you call upon a singular element and try to merge yourself as close as possible to understand the very essence of water as if it were a living totem to try and learn everything about the magic of it such that water "speaks" to you? For that matter, when you cast magic can you have your magic speak to you? Can you feel an addictive rush when you cast powerful spells? Are you changed a little by casting so much violent magic?

 

Again-- these are all things that aren't a part of lore per se. But these aren't things you can really sweep under the rug and say your characters wouldn't talk about, consider, etc. Something has to be said, right?

 

Lore is going to get mixed a little because almost no game is going to have enough lore to fill in all of the cracks for all concepts. (Miqo'te Occult tradition... I'm looking at you). I honestly don't think there's anything wrong with adding bits and pieces there to round out conversations so long as it "feels" right for the setting. That said, just be sure to file off your serial numbers so that it feels right for the setting.

While anyone can do anything they want, as everyone has complete control over their own character...

 

Being present at such a momentous moment in history (and manipulating the magic used by Louisoux not only bends, but breaks lore completely, in my opinion. It's not a matter of filling in the cracks missing in lore at that point.

 

Roleplaying is not the same as just writing. We work within the world someone else makes the rules for. That takes some getting used to, but it's very rewarding!

While it's really up to you in the end, the scenario you put out about Nidhogg and the Calamity is a bit impossible. The two events are separated by an extremely large time gap and someone experiencing the Nidhogg battle could not have also experienced the battle with the Garleans during the event of the fall of Dalamud.

 

 Now if you wanted to have your character witness some kind of dragon attack you could look up the Battle of Silvertear Skies that happened in Mor Dhona. The wiki says it happened 15 years ago, but now with the time skip it would have happened 20 years ago. It doesn't necessarily give you what you are looking for as it seems you are searching for something more Dragoon lore oriented, but it is the closest thing I can see as far as dragon battles go without breaking the lore. 

 

Also it was a battle between dragons and the Garleans and it took place in the sky so he would have likely not really participated in the battle, but may have witnessed it. Well that is...unless he fought for the Garlean Empire.

He wasn't supposed to be in the battle I was just using that as an explainable reason for the quantium leap in time I actually wanted him to think bahamut was nidhogg he only was supposed to see it very breifly it was a quick idea that seemed cool sense there was already the time element n I'm glad that elzeans are in ishguard I thought I was gonna have to make him a hyur and thanks for letting me know about the French aspect to these are things I couldn't find its very helpful everyone input has been I'm extremely new to rp...9or writing for that matter
