Con One Posted August 22, 2010 Share #1 Posted August 22, 2010 *Disclaimer: OP is not responsible for any lost man hours caused by linking to TV Tropes.* What sort of character do you have? A Knight Templar? Perhaps a Rebellious Spirit? Or maybe just The Klutz? There's a trope for pretty much everything your character is, was, or ever will be. Not to mention everything they could, will, and have done. So I challenge you folks to choose just 10 tropes that best match your character. I'll go first. Dandelion: Catgirl. Miqo'te FTW The Alcoholic. One of her most obvious character traits. Glacier Waif. I think any Miqo'te or Lalafell who tanks falls under this. The Slacker. Dandie has been running away from responsiblity for about a decade. Massive Numbered Siblings. Number 11 of 14. Middle Child Syndrome. Related to the above. Never quite got out of her siblings shadows. Big Sister Worship. Despite her seemingly hostile attitude towards her siblings, she reveres the eldest 3 as examples she can never live up to. Black Sheep Cut herself away from the herd since she feels she can't handle the load. Gallows Humor. Usually because she's been on the sauce and doesn't know what sort of danger she's really in. Don't You Dare Pity Me. Is quite content wallowing in shame and self pity, doesn't want you trying to pull her out of it. Hopefully this is a fun exercise. Link to comment
Aveline Posted August 22, 2010 Share #2 Posted August 22, 2010 This is awesome! Aveline Blue Glacier Waif -- I agree, all Miqo'te & Lalafell should get this by default Catgirl The Fashionista-- Aveline looooves jewelry, and clothes, and shiny things to put in her hair. Favorite emote: /examine self. Disappeared Dad/Mysterious Parent -- She has never met her father, & her mother has told her some stories about him that are highly suspect in the "believability" department. Action Girl -- 100%! Good Bad Girl The Captain There's probably more, and for sure some weird amalgamations of tropes in her, but that's a good starting point. ^_^b Link to comment
blueblacksky Posted August 22, 2010 Share #3 Posted August 22, 2010 I love tvtropes! I could only manage seven at the moment. Fironon: At Least I Admit It - And proud of it. Magnificent Bastard and later the Byronic Hero - Hopefully I get to play this transition out with Baltazar's Favor forcing him to be a "good guy". The Dandy - As important as breathing. Yandere - Intimacy issues anyone? Sacrifice Basic Skills for Awesome Training - Almost an assassin. Almost. Dark and Troubled Past - He's not going to be a stronger person for it. Of course all of these will change depending on how RP progresses. But this is how I intend to start him off. Link to comment

Mycroft Posted August 23, 2010 Share #10 Posted August 23, 2010 Oh my.. This will be the first place I'll look for personality quirks in the future. Malrend: The Trickster - He won't be all godlike, but he likes to promote chaos and reacts mostly on impulse. The Seeker - This is all he really does. Badass Bookworm - He reads.. A lot, most of his experience with alchemy and survival comes from reading. The Philosopher - Kinda self-explanatory. Reluctant Warrior - He won't cause harm to anyone else, unless it is needed for his own survival. Chef of Iron - He would be what they've classified as "Ordinary". Dark and Troubled Past - Wouldn't you like to know? Cloudcuckoolander - He has his head in the clouds more often than not. The Wonka - His actions are, to him, as normal as can be. Link to comment
Tyriont Posted August 23, 2010 Share #11 Posted August 23, 2010 Damn you. DAMN YOU! I WAS CLEAN, DAMNIT! I WAS CLEAN! I hadn't visited that site in weeks and now this. I'd spend more time cursing you for rekindling this addiction, but I have pages to read. Tyriont Gaidal Chaotic Good - Tyriont to a T. Loveable Rogue - Goes along with the above, this very much fits Ty's view of himself as a "hero to the people", whether the people see him that way or not. Just Like Robin Hood - To really drive that point home Obfuscating Stupidity - Ty doesn't come across as an idiot rather than very laid back and carefree to people outside the crew, which hides the fact that he tends to be very observant and spends a lot of time figuring out who fits together and how. The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything - When you really get down to it, the Phoenix Pirates are more treasure hunters than pirates given how discriminating they tend to be with their targets. When they're not pulling the Robin Hood act, they're this. Deadpan Snarker - Ty often leans towards this. Berserk Button - Harm a member of Ty's crew (or someone else he's placed under his protection out of devotion/loyalty to them) and this will be triggered in a big way. Cool Boat - The Phoenix Flame is one of these. Heterosexual Life Partners - Tyriont has this with Wandering Lion. Papa Wolf - While it does go both ways, Ty is as much this to his crew as they are to him. Link to comment

ArmachiA Posted August 23, 2010 Share #13 Posted August 23, 2010 TVtropes never fails to remind me of the Barenaked Ladies song "It's All been Done" Loki 1. Dark Action Girl - Loki in a nicely wrapped up nutshell, honestly. However, Girls With Guns will be her one Muskateer is released. Right now she's just a silly ol' Archer. 2. The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything - It's just really hard to do pirating in a game like this. However, in my defense, she was quite the plunderer in the Table Top I made her for. 3. Deadpan Snarker - This, so much this. I've had players get mad at me for comments she's made ICly. 4. Femme Fatale - Oh so dangerous. 5. Pirate Girl - Obviously. 6. Kuudere - As much as I hoped to avoid Japanese tropes, this one fits way too well. Can also be considered a Tsundere depending on your POV. 7. Ethical Slut - Indeed. 8. The Snark Knight - Deadpan snarker +1. 9. Good Bad Girl - I'm not bad... I'm just drawn that way. Armi 1. Reluctant Warrior - Fighting is not the will of the Gods! 2. Martyr Without a Cause - Armi, in every universe, has some kind of martyr complex. It rounds her out and gives her a pretty unlikable quality. Being a priestess this go round... yeah, no change. 3. Good Shepherd - Always worried about the health and welfare of everyone around her. This, again, hasn't changed regardless of Universe. 4. The Heart - to the point of annoyance. 5. The Paragon - She's so sugary sweet, ain't she? 6. Lady of War - she'll still kick your ass though. 7. Skilled but Naive - She's not sure what to do around normal, nonpreisty, people. 8. Unkempt Beauty - Not one for keeping herself all dolled up. 9. Strange Girl - She does things that doesn't really make sense to anyone but herself. Langli 1. Cat Girl - Damn Miqote. 2. Cute Bruiser - She's scrappy! 3. Small Annoying Creature - kekekeke. 4. Plucky Girl - She never seems to lose her sense of optimism. 5.Let's Get Dangerous - Again, she's so scrappy! 6. The Ditz - To a point, I would call her dumb or anything, but she has her moments. 7. Tomboy - By far. 8. Love Freak - FOR LOVE AND JUSTICE! 9. Did I just say that out loud? - Oops! Daej 1. Jerk with a Heart of Gold - He's honestly too dumb to keep up the ruse for long. 2. Boisterous Bruiser - He talks a lot and love the fightin. 3. The Idiot From Osaka - Southern Accent and all! 4. Hidden Depths - but of course, he's an RP character, he would not be interesting otherwise. 5. Chivalrous Pervert - and the best damn one. 6. Grey and Gray Morality - Daej is my most villianous character, he's a smuggler by trade, he's the muscle for Fillion, and is generally a trouble maker... doesn't mean he ain't likable! 7. Did I just say that out loud? - Yeah he has this too. 8. Completely Missing the Point - Oh Daej, you lovable idiot. ___ Okay that's enough. Link to comment
Satisiun Posted August 26, 2010 Share #14 Posted August 26, 2010 ... Hell, why not. Satisiun Desain 1. Knight in Sour Armor: Satisiun's really been beaten up over the years, and not just in the physical department. He isn't the type to be an outwardly smarmy jackass, but he definitely has become very bitter. Still, being a good person is still second nature to him, to the point of acting on instinct. 2. Humble Hero: Satisiun has never been the proud type, and it really shows. He doesn't like bringing attention to himself, no matter what he does. This goes hand in hand with #1, teetering almost on the self-deprecating hero over time. 3. It's All My Fault: Connected to both previous tropes, too. Sati's got a lot of weight to carry, and regardless of how little responsibility he may have for whatever happened to him, he takes way too much blame. 4. Obfuscating Stupidity: Prior to #1 becoming a focal point to Sati's personality, he actually better fit the archetype Good Is Not Dumb. The difference now is that while he still acts the same way on the outside, he is definitely more cynical on the inside. 5. Blade On A Stick: Because Satisiun is going to be majoring with a bachelor's degree in Polearm Engineering (Lancer). 6. Freud Was Right: This isn't something that will become obvious or is even heavily implied when playing, but under the nice guy demeanor he does sometimes find himself having thoughts related to a comment or something he sees that may not exactly be PG. But that isn't to say he is a hornball; Sati just has heard one too many dirty jokes and now sees many a thing when in light company as amusing in the same way. 7. Minored In Asskicking: Satisiun isn't some super-powered Elezen who is "hiding his power level", but he nevertheless likes to show restraint in a lot of situations unless he has to do something. When he does finally decide to do so, however ... 8. Rule Of Funny: Not really sure how to explain this one, since even the trope defines it as a character stepping out of their norm to bring a laugh. Basically just think of this being here since I tend to be a rather horrid person when it comes to the puns, so expect them occasionally from Satisiun, too. ... and I am so not doing anymore. Finding 8 took long enough. Link to comment

Con One Posted August 26, 2010 Author Share #17 Posted August 26, 2010 Basically, a trope is a plot device, character archetype, sound effect, etc. that is used often enough in media that it becomes distinct and recognizable. Some are much more common than others. I suggest that you look up a movie, book, or show that you are familiar with in the search box on the site and browse it's list of tropes. Should help it make more sense. Link to comment

Eva Posted August 27, 2010 Share #20 Posted August 27, 2010 I spent more time than I should have, but probably not enough to get a solid list. These sound like they describe Eva pretty well. Hot Librarian: Probably really attractive, but you'd never know it. Dead Little Sister: Tragedy! (not her sister) Heroic BSOD: The result of said tragedy! (also really love the trope title) Break the Cutie: Why do bad things happen to good people? Beware the Nice Ones: 48th rule of acquisition - "The bigger the smile, the sharper the knife." The Quiet One: Yeah... she's a little emo... Berserk Button: But she's not gonna lose any more loved ones without a fight. Mama Bear: Don't mess with her cubs!! (no, there are no children) Wise Beyond Their Years: Pretty much self-explanatory. Link to comment
Ellion Goto Posted August 29, 2010 Share #21 Posted August 29, 2010 Fillion Fenias Anti-Villain - Yes, Fill is generally a bad guy. Handsome Lech - Fill is flirtatious this round, but light-hearted about it and doesn't expect it to go anywhere. Affably Evil - Charming as hell, that deviant son of a bitch. You won't even know it. Magnificent Bastard - He's a tactical genius despite talking slow. Makes it easy to get you out of your pants and in the line of fire. Screw the Rules, I have Money! - Fillion has money and power from his two trades and is not afraid to exercise it. Dragon with an Agenda - Fillion has all of the makings of an overlord. However due to him being younger and less experienced in this universe, he isn't quite up to taking over just yet. Seemed like a Good Idea at the Time - When Fillion does mess up, it's probably a bad mess-up and he'll attempt to shrug it off. Gentleman Thief - Lupin the third if there ever was one. Fillion -does- get involved in petty theft to support funds for his operations. CrimsonBlades in general however, only get involved in very high quality relics. Bad Ass - Yes... in how they describe it... he is. Screw the Rules, I have Connections! - Hand in hand with Fill's money, Fillion is a mob-boss in his own right with powerful connections to underground sects. Ellion Direfrost Jerkass Facade - Ell is a very serious character in his own mind. He keeps people at a distance because it's easier to deal with them. Dark and Troubled Past - OOCly Ell's wife died. Why? Secret. A Darker Me - By default, Ell was originally what I aspired to be so he wins this. Anti-Hero - The very definition of. Not So Stoic - Ell is expressive (an upgrade to what people say he used to be) and a little sarcastic and cynical with violent tendencies in disputes. TCPIFAR - He doesn't like to talk about his issues. 'Nuff said. The Lancer - Ironically called The Lancer and he plays a Lancer, but Ell is usually the first character a major plot-point will take place on. This doesn't make him great, it makes him noticeable. Smug Snake - yyeeaa Knight in Sour Armor - Defiant to the end, Ellion is a character who will never give up because it's the right thing to do. He'll suffer overly serious damage and pain and will either die or pass out before succumbing. This makes his pain threshould and focus very high. Link to comment
Nbokkri Posted August 30, 2010 Share #22 Posted August 30, 2010 Characteristics: Lawful Neutral This was the first and probably hardest trope for me to pick. From her perspective she is very Lawful Netural, but from the view of others... she could be Lawful Good, Chaotic Good, or even some form of Evil depending on the circumstance. Weak But Skilled This one is a bit of an exageration, but for the most part she makes up for her lack of brawn by finding clever ways around it. She is by no means a master of swordsmanship or anything of the sort though. Unfettered This one was also very tough. I'm still not sure if she is Unfettered or Fettered, but I'm leaning toward unfettered at the moment. When she has a contract to fulfill, she is pretty blind to any other secondary objectives she might have. This also goes for a few others things. I'm still formalizing her code/beliefs. Walking the Earth She travels. A lot. Nerves of Steel Explosions and giant dragons? No problem. She'll keep her cool and try to figure something out and if nothing seems to be possible she might just make one of those last stands. The Philosopher She derived her own set of world view from what she picked up on the road. This make her prone to discussion about things that other people might not think about. She never attempts to force her views on others though. Crazy Prepared After travelling with caravans that are prone to being raided by whatever greedy or downright evil folk are wandering around, she tends to pack something for every situation she can think of. Spare sword? Why not five? Know When To Fold Em This one may seem to conflict with some of her other traits, but even when she is hooked on an objective she maintains her sense well enough to figure out whether or not the route she is taking is the best one. Sure, you could attempt cutting down an entire fortress of soldiers... or you could try sneaking in. Honor Before Reason ...even if no one has ever made it in to said fort alive. Beliefs: Grey and Grey Morality This one is kinda hard to explain. She think sher beliefs are entirely logical, but her perception on morality could be considered strange by most people. At times she appears to view the world in a very Grey v. Grey Morality, so she doesn't actively get involved with most moral debates and simple views both sides as particpants. She'll only take sides if there is some reason beyond what is considered "right" and "wrong". This could also be considered Blue v. Orange Morality especially to those with a very clear sense of what is right and wrong. Epiphanic Prison Most of her beliefs are centered around the idea that we choose the prison we live our lives. But on her more optomistic days she wonders if there is a way that one can entirely break all the chains that bind them in the world. This is what this trope represents to her. I Gave My World Will Not Tell A Lie These two go together in a sense. She is almost psychotically truthful and as such will never make a promise she would not keep as it would be just as damaging to her perception of her own integrity as outright lieing. Is NOT: Glacier Waif Dumb Muscle Knight In Shining Armor Note: This was a really fun exercise. It helped me flesh out my character a lot. Link to comment
Inoxia Posted August 30, 2010 Share #23 Posted August 30, 2010 Ok, I figured this would be a fun thing to do as a little intro of sorts since I'm kind of new to the site. Here's a little glimpse into Inoxia. CatGirl. This time it -is- a race thing. http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/CatGirl Freudian Excuse. Some experiences we never out grow. http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FreudianExcuse Kuudere. Very few make it inside her shell, but there is a soft warm underbelly beneath her cold shoulder. http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Kuudere Snark Knight. Tied into above. http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheSnarkKnight Lady of War. Grace, composure, elegance, her almost noble demeanor even in combat. http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/LadyOfWar Cultured Warrior. Manners and respect are as important between enemies as between friends. http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/CulturedWarrior Quip to Black. Sometimes she'll chime in on the humor only to get the last word and wonder why everyone stopped laughing... http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/QuipToBlack Weak but Skilled. She may be smaller and weaker, but she knows how to make her speed and surroundings count in the heat of battle. http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/WeakButSkilled Double Entendre. She's always quick to see or use a double meaning. Her mind may be in the gutter, but she does have tact. http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DoubleEntendre Will Not Tell a Lie. Nothing more to say there. She just wont lie. She may dance around the truth a bit but she wont tell a straight lie. http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/WillNotTellALie Link to comment
Mycroft Posted August 31, 2010 Share #24 Posted August 31, 2010 I might as well add Tremere's tropes as well. Anti Villain. - One might argue that his intentions aren't all that good, but I say that he's living life the only way he knows how, despite not actually liking it. Berserker Tears. - It has been witnessed seeing tears stream down his cheeks when launching his initial attack, one might speculate as to why. Weak but Skilled. - He isn't physically weak as his life-style does require a certain amount of muscle, but in combat he relies more on Skill than strength, to quickly subdue his victims without harming them. Common Sense. - Has been known to be the one to stop many a scheme, due several flaws and generally low intelligence of the schemer. Dark and Troubled Past. - Was abandoned by his parents, found by a band of Brigands, has been living as a highwayman ever since. Sympathetic Criminal. - Won't cause harm to his victims unless they impair his "work". The Highwayman. - THE Highwayman of the area surrounding Ul'dah. Link to comment

She just has a little bit of trouble with the whole "rules" thing. Cat Girl - Miqo'te! Brilliant but Lazy - "Eh~" Perpetual Poverty - A side effect of being lazy, and spending everything you do earn on fancy clothes and accessories. Good With Numbers - really good with numbers. Badass Bookworm - "Never judge a book by its cover." Lethal Chef - One of the things she's bad at. And she is really bad at it. Deadpan Snarker - Not always, but if she can get one in...
