So what ideas to folks have for IC reasons for women warriors to form their own group?  Something better than a pack of man-haters.  :D

But that's the best reason!!  (Kidding, kidding!)

Just like in real life, there are sometimes things I'm just not comfortable sharing with my guy friends or asking for their help with, even when it isn't a gender specific issue.  It could simply be an issue of comfort and trust similar to how other groups of like-minded people gather.

This right here works perfectly.

If it were not for the fact that I just started my own FC then I feel Skaenmoen would support this idea. Either way, I'd support rp with a FC like this. As for ideas, perhaps I can offer something up as food for thought. Looking at the map of Eorzea, I noticed several unnamed islands. As a back story you could assume a ship sailed from Limsa carrying the wives and daughters of military men who feared for their safety during the war with the Empire. They ship set sail bound to ferry them out of the city and away to a island "safe house" until the danger had passed. Through the war or the calamity, the ship never made it to the safe haven but instead found itself smashed upon the reef of on of the unmarked islands. The most of the women survived but the ship's crew was badly injured and died since they were above deck with the incident happened. Banning together the women became organized and built their own community and found pride and power in themselves. After five years the women of the community have the means to leave their island only

to find their husbands and sons perished. They resolve to see their community grow and that means reconnecting with the rest of Eorzea. A group of women are selected to leave the island, connect with the world of Eorzea, and see if their are others who would benefit from their matriarical society. That gives room for both craters/gatherers and adventurer classes.

Another idea to think about is the name. Amazons got their name we know it because they were said the have lived near the current day Don river, which was called the Amazon by the largest society in the area, the Scythians. The Greeks called this river,Tanais. Also, the Scythian name for the Amazons was, Oiorpata. Maybe the island they landed on could be called Tanais? Like I said, food for thought. I figured using something with ties to the Amazon's without coming out and calling them Amazon's might be neat.

Another reason could be more philosophical/religious. Halone is the Goddess of War/rage is she not? It could simply have started as a movement called "The Daughters of Halone" which had an open invitation to all women who strive to honor the ideals of the Goddess.

It could have been a passive organization that from time to time got together to accomplish certain things, but during the wars a core group arose amongst one of the Grand Companies and operated like a special forces unit. After the war the Leaders of that unit reorganized under a new Free Company which now operates like a mercenary guild. It would make sense for the leaders of the LS to be former Grand Company officers or something like that who are now trying to expand their new business by recruiting members who can follow the ideas of Halone.

The involvement could also be on somewhat loose to allow for more IC freedom of association. e.g. You can belong to another organizations full time but also be a Daughter of Halone. Maybe you're a crafter who supports by supplying items. Or maybe you have a full time Job with a Grand Company, but when the call of the Daughters go out, you have a slight dilemma trying to serve both masters.

You could have a lot of Philanthropic reasons for their motivations as well. Perhaps most of their profits go toward supporting an orphanage or a school for girls, so none martial classes like scholars and mages could have full time occupations within the company outside of missions/jobs. So it could have a 'Heroines with Heart' sort of feel.

OOC'ly I think this would work best as a LS and when events are organized a call goes out to all members to gather for a new mission, recruitment drive, bake sale-you get the idea ^_^

I'm sorry I didn't reply to this when this discussion was actually going on today in game. I'm not very good at multi-tasking in FFXIV it seems.

Anyway, I'd first just like to add my voice to that of everyone already interested. I'd love to get involved!

Secondly, I'd maybe caution about making this too Halone-centric. I'd be worried it'd isolate anyone who didn't worship her as their patron deity, or at least one of their patron deities. She's a damn good fit though, of course.

A simple idea, for whatever it's worth -- I remember reading about Amazons for a project I did last semester. Some historians think the Greek legend came about because of what actually happened in Saracen (I think it was?) around the time. So many men went off to war that the women left behind had to learn how to defend their country in their absence, and actually became quite respectable warriors in their own right. It could be that something similar happened to some NPC village/nation/etc in the distant past, and while that location did not survive, the descendents of those women did not want to give up their heritage and carried the tradition on through the ages, converting into an Eorzea-wide order of women warriors. It could be a bit like the Companions of Skyrim: they have a legacy, a history, and a few traditions, but in the present-day climate they largely function as blades for hire. Some follow the traditions more than others.

I agree with the sentiment expressed tonight that it shouldn't be too-too good-aligned. Allow some wiggle room for grey characters. Diversity is a good thing!

I also agree a LS is the best idea, so that those of us already committed to a FC can still be involved. :)

Not sure if this was discussed/brought up/even a point that is worth bringing up, but despite Roe ladies would be perfect candidates to head something like this, would the Keeper of the Moon Miqo'te females be better suited, in a sense, in terms of back-story?

I only ask because the Keeper Miqo'te women seem to have a much higher status/authority than their male counter-parts, which I would think that naturally, SOME (not ALL) would feel superior. So like storyline wise, I could imagine it just starting out to be a small pack of Keeper Miqo'te females with whatever goals they have in mind and soon start to enfold women from every walks of life to join whatever cause they uphold.

Could easily go into a Sisterhood with one of their main focal points is to snuff out the slave trade entirely. It might be cliched as fuck (shit, even the name Sisterhood is cliche, but whatev), but who cares if it is a tried and tested formula for good RP?

I mean OBVIOUSLY a female from ANY race could be leading the charge in starting it up, but I can see a driven Keeper female being one of the fiercest to be a 'flag/shield bearer' of sorts in terms of wanting to empower the women of Eorzea as a whole (despite that some of the most powerful figures in this game ARE women) seeing as how they already hold a position of power/status. Then, a Roe woman, powerful and respected in her own right, might have differing opinions on how to lead them that then turn into IC drama that causes conflict and story. The 'Sisterhood' eventually breaks off into different enclaves that suits specific needs, etc, etc.

All the while, stereotypical sexist antagonists rear their ugly head to stomp out this 'feminist' movement in attempts to quell their 'inferiors'. 'Gender battles' begin with women from both Garlean and the rest of Eorzea assisting one another in various ways despite having to be enemies on parchment to defeat a far more vile evil.

Romances not unlike seen in Avatar: Korra will blossom (hopefully in a much better structured story :P). Lots of those tropes/cliches happening, but who cares about 'originality' because it's about deliverance anyway.

Annnnnnnnnd I got carried away >.>

Hey all!

Salty and I had a lengthy discussion in game last night over the history and background of the linkshell and we wanted to run some ideas by you guys to see if you like what we came up with. First, while we liked the 'women isolated and form their own society' background, we thought that I could be limiting, in that existing characters with their own backgrounds couldn't participate. Thus we decided that the Mercenary guild background would allow for a more diverse and accessible framework for any and all female characters to be a part of. Additional we felt that any of the character from those female only setting could still be created and be a part of this as they would naturally be drawn to the all female aspect.

Second we liked the "Daughters of Halone" concept, but didn't want to stress the religious aspect for the same reasons as above. Instead it will be a choice if characters view it religiously, philosophically or just a name. The way we are doing this is by making the Daughters of Halone an ancient group that existed and is now mythos akin to how we view amazons today. Thus the recreation of them will be open to interpretation which could lead to some nice IC conflict between characters who view it spiritually and those who view it only symbolically.

As for the mercenary guild background we came up with a backup story involving our two characters and up to 6 others if you choose to be a part of it. Here are the details.

During the last great war, [which can either be during the calamity or during the end game events of 2.0 need peoples input for that] the Grand companies commissioned teams of adventurers led by Grand company officers to act as special forces teams against the Garleans.

One such team was led by a Roe Paladin named Size Queen (my char) and her second was a Roe pirate, Salty Lake. As the rest of the team were also female(this is where the 6 other players can join in), Size Queen drew on the inspiration of her Guardian Halone and dubbed them the 'Daughters of Halone'. During the war, they gained notoriety amongst both the enemy and their peers and were ranked one of the top fighting units in combat.

At the close of the war, they were disbanded and separated by geography they each went their separate ways.

Fast forward to present day, Salty, now a notorious pirate, finds herself on hard times and in desperate need of cash hatches a new idea to reassemble the Daughters of Halone and start a mercenary company. She seeks out her old Lieutenant Size Queen, who has now put down her sword and shield to become a monk. After some reluctance, Size Queen agrees to start the company, but with her new path in life, views the ideas of the Daughters of Halone far more spiritually than she did in the past. Salty on the other hand is just in it for the gil, but knows she needs Size's ideals and leadership to pull them all together.

They then set off to seek out the other original members and new members to expand the company.

OOC info

In practice we hope for a lot of IC conflict as Size and Salty's ideals often clash e.g. while Size would be trying to give their profits to the orphanage, Salty would have already spent them on a new warship or something.

The company would have full time and part time members so old associations need not be dropped.

We need some feedback on the above, if you would be so kind to answer the questions:-

1) Is this a background you can get into?

2) Do you prefer the war to the Cataclysm or the end events in 2.0? If the latter we could actually role play out history as Salty still needs to do those missions.

3) Do you want to be one of the original 8 members? These would be considered officers or at least senior members in the Company.

4) Is everyone ok with this being a linkshell?

5) Anyone have more they could add?

Look forward to the feedback!

1) Is this a background you can get into? I love the background idea. And as interested as I am, the only stumbling block I'm running into is how my socially awkward, book-worm of a miqo'te would get dragged into this. Especially since she's ICly untested in combat!

2) Do you prefer the war to the Cataclysm or the end events in 2.0? I personally am flexible, and could go either way. I could see the original group springing up just prior to Dalamund to fight the Garleans, and slowly varying in size of the ensuing years since.

3) Do you want to be one of the original 8 members? I wouldn't, personally. Yuri would've been really young for that (and still very much a novice apprentice!).

4) Is everyone ok with this being a linkshell? Linkshell works perfectly. I love my FC, and wouldn't want to leave it. <3

Look forward to the feedback!

1) Is this a background you can get into?

Totally! Works for me, and I think it's open-ended enough that pretty much anyone can fit in.

Personally I prefer the war over the other two. It'll be easier to keep away from the 2.0 storyline elements for continuity's sake (while still acknowledging they happened, of course). It can get difficult trying to work in direct personal IC involvement into a specific storyline everyone shares.

3) Do you want to be one of the original 8 members? These would be considered officers or at least senior members in the Company.

Oak wasn't there at the calamity...so I guess that wouldn't work either way. x.x

4) Is everyone ok with this being a linkshell?

Yes.

5) Anyone have more they could add?

Not at the moment. :)

I like it. It allows for various backgrounds and keeps it open for something new.

I prefer the Cataclysm because it gives time for people to change from what they were like in the previous war, like Queen.

3) Do you want to be one of the original 8 members? These would be considered officers or at least senior members in the Company. I'd love for Skaen to be one of the healers there originally. It suits her to get behind the cause and to make sure all of her unit makes it back home.

Yes.

5) Anyone have more they could add?

Not yet. Although I will likely make an alt with the background idea I posted above at some point.

Meat just wants to be this LS version of Bosley ala Charlie's Angels with providing mini plot like missions for $.8-) BTW he's always available for moral support, if not a friendly snog or punch.

Meat could be the link that brings Salty and Size back together. That way you could have some involvement from the beginning and stay in touch.

1) Is this a background you can get into?

Yes, very much so!

2) Do you prefer the war to the Cataclysm or the end events in 2.0? If the latter we could actually role play out history as Salty still needs to do those missions.

I don't think I should speak to either as I would be joining up purely at the present time

3) Do you want to be one of the original 8 members? These would be considered officers or at least senior members in the Company.

Nope. This character is not going to have participated in the event prior to ARR in any way other than civilian, so it wouldn't make sense.

4) Is everyone ok with this being a linkshell?

LC/FC I'm up for either ^.^

5) Anyone have more they could add?

Hrmm only thing I can think of would be if option one(the ancient group reformed) is used you may consider looking into the story of "Noir"[the anime]. It has an ancient group that is (sort of) reformed and fun stuff ensues (it is also, as I remember, a female only group). Aside from maybe that as just an idea of a direction it could run in, It all looks like fun.

(my Character for this would be Lubblyss Zwelfskalwyn<wiki>)

Hi all! Macey, thanks for posting the recap of our brainstorming conversation.

Sorry about the delay in reply. I am trying to finish my dissertation, and haven't had much time to play.

Pre-calamity would work better for Salty because she was a pirate prior to the calamity (a right-hand-woman type, not a captain) and has been trying to reform post-calamity, with some success due to the influence of her IC friends (though she could be tempted back into unlawful ways given the right influence).

I was thinking Salty could hunt Size down, want to reform the group, then we could hold an IC recruiting event.

We were thinking of being a merc group mixed, but could be open to other purposes that animate the group's present manifestation. I also thought the idea of a secret society could be cool, ranging from placing their members in positions of power to practicing rituals to sorority-style hazing. Perhaps we could have a mix of both to draw in a wide variety of characters & allow for a wide variety of plot-lines.

I love the idea of Keepers of the Moon being some of the historical founders. Any keepers want to be involved with the start-up of the revival?

Good to hear from you again, Salty.

Some foundation has been laid in game. We have a mutual friend in Meat, so once you find out where I am from him we can set up the initial in game meeting to kick things off.

The Miquotes being the founders of the original order makes a lot of sense too. Let us know when you're going to have some play time and we can set things up :3

Poking around Limsa I found what appears to be a ladies only pirate group. They are in a little off building by themselves near the aft castle.

Awesome! Did you catch their names? I'd love to RP with them since Salty is a reformed pirate. She might try to recruit them!

It makes sense for their to be all lady pirate groups, really!

The tavern is called 'The Missing Member'. The pirates are called The Sanguine Sirens.

1) Is this a background you can get into?

Sure! I see no problem with it.

I generally try to avoid mentioning the main quest in RP, so I'd prefer the Calamity.

Bryn went to Carteneau with a unit of old friends from the Ala Mhigan resistance, so this isn't an option for her. I'm open to linking her with the story in other ways, though.

4) Is everyone ok with this being a linkshell?

Absolutely.

5) Anyone have more they could add?

Not right now. ^^

What Bryn said Salty, and sadly they they are NPCs...sorry to get your hopes up Salty >.> should have been more clear.

Just thought I should mention them since it clearly means that such groups exist in NPC form. ^.^
