Dragoon questions

Recommended Posts

I'm not the worlds biggest Dragoon expert, but I've heard from somebody that they only suppose to exist Ishgardian. Does that mean they're supposingly an urban legend or are they simply not allow to branch out?

I ask this because I've been wanting to make a superhero-ish  Dragoon IC that not only fights Dragon, but crime as well. Do I need a super good reason for her to set out in the rest of the world? Or is that impossible lore-wise?

Not impossible at all.

Per FFXIV Lore, a "Dragoon" is any Knight of Ishgard that slays a dragon and offers proof of the kill to The Holy See of Ishgard. Dragoon is simply a title meaning Dragon Slayer. While, technically, you have to be Ishgardian to claim this title officially, there is nothing preventing your character from calling themselves a Dragoon because they slew a dragon... or didn't.

Also, not all Dragoons use a lance. Again, it's just a title.

Now, the title of Dragoon is not to be confused with The Azure Dragoon. This is a person chosen/cursed by Nidhogg's Eye to fight Nidhogg. The Azure Dragoon is Ishgard's Champion so to speak. There is only one chosen per generation. The reason I call it a curse is because Nidhogg's Eye is not on Ishgard's side. The person who is chosen by the Eye is subjected to the full affect of Nidhogg's magic. But because of this link between Nidhogg and man, the Azure Dragoon is the only person strong enough to stand against the King of Dragons.

Every Azure Dragoon has a ceremonial and function lance called the Gae Bolg (pronounced gay bulga) crafted for them out of dragon bone. Special Drachen Mail is also imbued with magical enchantments to help the Dragoon withstand Nidhogg's influence over their mind. Even still, some Azure Dragoons are driven mad from Nidhogg's corruption.

On Dragons. Dragons are magical beastkin from the region of Dravania to the Northwest of Coerthas. Ishgard has waged a Holy War against dragonkin for the last several centuries. It is said that dragons possess a strong magical influence over man. If you look one in the eyes, touch one with your bare flesh, or hear it's whisper your mind will be corrupted by its magic. While this warning may just be propaganda for the Holy See's War, it does hold true to the original tale of how Dragoons were born a millennia ago, which can be found in-game by completing the DRG Job Questline.

Ishgardians themselves are mainly Elezen and Hyur. Wildwood and Midlander majority. They have a aristocracy ruled by an Archbishop. There are several Noble houses that naturally all hate each other. There's a great distrust of outsiders, with the exception of Gridanians, whom they treat respectfully as allies in their hunt for heretics. Ah yeah, anyone believed (justly or not) to be in league with the Dragons or anyone really who commits a crime against the Holy See of Ishgard is labeled a Heretic and put to death. So there's a Salem Witch Trial equivalent going on within this nation as well. Gridania aids Ishgard in their hunt for heretics by capturing fugitives and returning them to the Holy See.

The city of Ishgard itself has been closed off to everyone except the Holy Knights for about 15~20 years now. The closing of Ishgard's gates roughly corresponds to the destruction of a hamlet called Ferndale in 1557 6AE. Nidhogg razed the hamlet to the ground and has not been seen since. However, since that time, dragon attacks on Ishgardian hamlets have increased.

Anyways, back on topic. It's entirely possible to be a Holy Knight of Ishgard or a Dragoon of Ishgard and then leave the nation for whatever reason. Personal or perhaps you were branded a Heretic? As I said earlier, you could also be someone who calls themselves a dragoon because they slew a dragon and you aren't even Ishgardian. Totally do-able! Try getting in contact with Knight Kat or TheLastCandle as they're actually setting up a LS for dragoon/Ishgardian characters. Maybe they could find a spot for you and help you out with your storyline.

Hope this helps! ^^

(EDIT: ah woops! nice catch Crisiet!)

I hate to be -that- guy and necro an old thread, but I've really got to give a thank you to Sounsyy for the response in this thread. As someone who is new to FFXIV (just purchased my copy yesterday), this thread was exactly what I needed to get the full-throttle dive into what it is to be a Dragoon and to better understand their role, where they come from, how they work, etc.

Thank you so very much.
