Kage Posted March 25, 2014 Share #1 Posted March 25, 2014 This won't help but er yeah... RPC has been extremely slow loading today and I constantly get 500 internal server errors. Perhaps something is wrong? Link to comment
FreelanceWizard Posted March 25, 2014 Share #2 Posted March 25, 2014 There's definitely something weird going on, quite possibly on the server we're on (huzzah for shared web hosting; it makes me want to move the site to my Azure VM ). I'll check with the hosting company and see if we can't get to the bottom of it. Link to comment
FreelanceWizard Posted March 25, 2014 Share #3 Posted March 25, 2014 We were under a denial of service attack from a spammer, and the hosting company was nice(?) enough to put us under semi-permanent CPU restrictions as a result. I've banned the spammer's entire netblock so that shouldn't recur, and everything should be back to normal now. Link to comment
Zhavi Posted March 25, 2014 Share #4 Posted March 25, 2014 Oh wow. 0o Glad it was able to be resolved and hurray for the hosting company! Link to comment
Kage Posted March 26, 2014 Author Share #5 Posted March 26, 2014 Wooh! I was worried that the site was getting attacked which is why I posted. Glad to hear it should be mostly resolved if not completely. Link to comment
Balhk'a Rook Posted March 26, 2014 Share #6 Posted March 26, 2014 I still get the error 500 when I try to access my private messages. Is anyone else experiencing that? Link to comment

Ignacius Posted March 26, 2014 Share #8 Posted March 26, 2014 Wait, someone was just attacking the host, or was attacking this particular forum directly? Who would be DDOSing a roleplaying community? Link to comment
FreelanceWizard Posted March 26, 2014 Share #9 Posted March 26, 2014 It was specific to our site and from the Ukraine. It could have been an out of control, malfunctioning spam bot instead of an intentional DoS attack, but the end result was the same. Link to comment
Zhavi Posted March 27, 2014 Share #10 Posted March 27, 2014 Is anyone else not able to see the wiki? When I click on it all I get are weird symbols and letters. Link to comment
Kage Posted March 27, 2014 Author Share #11 Posted March 27, 2014 Is anyone else not able to see the wiki? When I click on it all I get are weird symbols and letters. Same for me. I also had some errors show up occasionally last night while browsing the forums and entering threads. Link to comment
Roen Posted March 27, 2014 Share #12 Posted March 27, 2014 The main wiki link on the bar gets me the page full of symbols. I can still go to specific character's wiki pages. Link to comment

FreelanceWizard Posted March 27, 2014 Share #14 Posted March 27, 2014 So, one of the things I did to help make the site more resistant to broken spambots was to turn on output compression and caching in MediaWiki. Of course, if those are turned on by your hosting provider anywhere else in the stack (Apache/nginx, PHP, etc.), hilarity such as what's being observed ensues. I'll turn off the output compression and clear the wiki cache when I'm in a location where I can do so. Link to comment
Zhavi Posted March 27, 2014 Share #15 Posted March 27, 2014 Haha, aw man, stuff is so complicated. >< Thanks for the quick fix! Link to comment
FreelanceWizard Posted March 27, 2014 Share #16 Posted March 27, 2014 Yeah, it can be fun, especially on shared hosting. Everything should be back to normal now. Link to comment
