New to RP and Balmung! Hello everyone! :)

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone! Pleased to meet the RP community, though I'm totally new to it!

I really don't want to mess this up, so I have a few questions, I hope I'm not being too annoying!

I read the RP Handbook, but I still have some doubts!

So here are some questions!

1. Do I have to make a wiki page for my character? and if I do, do I put all my bio in there or just leave some stuff out that I may reveal later to some players?

2. Is it o.k. if I make my character come from a rich family? not necessarily politically influential or powerful, simply rich. Even though my character actually does not get along with her family.

3. Where do I even start Roleplaying in Balmung?

I'm transferring there tomorrow so I don't want to mess up!! :)

And last, but not least:

My character is supposed to be very magically powerful (seeking to become an archmage, she has mastered Arcamina and Conjury, but has yet to master Thaumaturgy.) but very squishy and with a tendency to burn through her mana quickly (sometimes going as far as using her own life source as mana, leading to many near-death experiences), as well as randomly having her mana pool drain itself (she has yet to discover why) which leaves her defensless against any attacks (and though she's by no means physically weak, she is nowhere near a skilled fighter, so all that's left for her is to retreat).

So the question is, is she too OP? Or too weak? Or is this o.k.? I don't plan to fight any RPs since my character dislikes conflict all together, but if the opportunity ever arises, I don't want to have fingers pointing at me for abusing power or anything.

First of all, welcome to Balmung! It's good to have you here! It always makes me happy to see new role-players getting into the mix and giving it a try.

1. You don't have to but it's certainly helpful! It's up to you how much information to include! Some people put in everything, or others only include what would be common knowledge to avoid spoilers and prevent other players from metagaming. It's just personal preference.

2. Yep, that's perfectly fine!

3. Wherever you please! If you see someone RPing, feel free to jump in. If someone's search info says Walk Up's Welcome, feel free to walk up. You'll find most role-play occurs in the Adventurer's Guilds, particularly Ul'dah. You can also find role-play partners here or watch the calender here for upcoming RP events.

4. It sounds fine to me! Make her however strong or weak you please (of course, bear in mind you'll step on some toes if you make her too strong, but from the sound of it she's certainly not OP).

You don't have to make a wiki page. Many players enjoy it and many players use them to make connections and such. I have small wikis for two of my characters both of which hold no real information.  I personally prefer to learn about characters through RP, but I know people like Miss Zhavi that peruse the wikis all the time to find people and characters that would work in this story or that.

It's all what you want to put out there and want to work to upkeep.:)

I don't see any reason why not. We need some people pushing around coins while the rest of these poor adventurers slave for change. ;)

3. Where do I even start Roleplaying in Balmung?

Start as soon as you log in! Where ever you are! There is a lot of RP in the city-states themselves, namely places like the city's taverns/inns but there's no set in stone hubs. Just emote fish! :D

It's all just finding a balance. I don't think any would tell you she's OP. Create the character how you feel she should be! She has pros, she has cons. Skills and deficits. I'm sure you'll have fun fleshing her out and building on both sides of her (abilities and flaws). Have fun!

Good luck! I hope you're able to find a bunch of great connections here. This community is pretty awesome.

Heheh, I'm actually planning on meeting other RPs by going around taverns and such offering adventurers coin for an escort mission since the my char is.. rather sensitive to aether and can't afford to use aetherytes all the time, at least not at first.

I won't bother echoing Faye and Shay, as they both hit the nail on the head. But I would say welcome mage, glad you decided to join us. You will have fun, just remember to find good people to start with who will help you better your rp without judging you. Early on you may as was said "step on toes" especially where magic lore is concerned when you get the first pm spanking all rpers get their first time out, don't let it get you down, take it in stride and try to have fun A wise man once said, "Remember, I'm pulling for you. We're all in this together."
