Welcome aboard! Feel free to ask any questions you might have to make the most out of your trial period!

I started with the trial myself, so if there's any questions about what you can or can't do during it, just me let know! :)

thanks for the warm welcomes!

I hope to stick around for a while and I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions as I get further into it :)

Sounds good. As a starting tidbit, I'll just give you the same warning I like to try and give any Trialer:

There's rewards for someone who invites someone to trial and the Trialer goes full sub. There's some nice things for the Trialer themselves (a neat little head item that gives +20% experience for any class under 25! ), but the Inviter actually gets a two-person mount. Even if you started the trial on your lonesome, it's when you activate the full account that the code is put in for your Inviter.

There's... there's many folks who want that bird. I know I do. So just be aware of that. I'm not sure if that all extends to the console version, but I'm going to assume it does just to be on the safe side.

Also, some other things to keep in mind that about the trial version:

  • You cannot send tells, but you CAN receive them (including obnoxious gil sellers)
  • You cannot level any class beyond 20 (I made it a challenge to see how many I could "cap" in the trial period! It was interesting.)
  • You can't get your Chocobo (I think? Not so certain on this one).
  • You cannot join a Free Company (Also uncertain on this.)

That's... about it, I think. Again, welcome to Eorzea and enjoy your stay! Hopefully it'll be longer than those two weeks! :D

Thanks!  I just started a new character on Gilgamesh, so I'll be playing around with her after work.

I understand there's a lot of discussion over Gilgamesh vs Balmung?  It seems hard to get a character on the later, but are there any pros and cons, or is it just personal preference?

I personally prefer some casual role playing, and will always favour a friendly community over anything.

The ever present quandary of Gilgamesh and Balmung....

Truth be told, Balmung's roleplaying community is large and in charge, though it still shares its server with PvEers. From personal experience, one can find and link into RP on Balmung -very- easily. However, Balmung is constantly filled to the gills so finding an opportunity to get a character registered to that world is a chore unless you like being up at 5am EST. That's the window I found and it's very brief.

Gilgamesh has a decent community, albeit insular and (I mean no disrespect) pointless. Many of the "open" events are simply bar crawls which may be just what you're looking for as a casual player. The community on Gilgamesh IS friendly and can be very welcoming, but it lacks a great deal of depth for a lot of more intense roleplayers. Gilgamesh rarely caps though, so it is far easier to get on that world than Balmung.

Summary? There isn't one. Neither World is superior to the other, they each offer something the other doesn't.

Cheers!
