Du'lance Fiourtune Posted January 18, 2015 Share #1 Posted January 18, 2015 Hey guys, just wanted to stop in and say hi and see what's up. New to the forums, new to the game, and certainly new to role-play. (In fact, I know how to role-play in general, but have yet to actually do any) As such as you can imagine, I have a million questions and would appreciate if anyone could answer at least a few of them. We will only start with a few..... #1. Apart from OC moments, is everything you do IC, such as the quests etc? #2. Do you pre-plan what your character is going to do and their story or do you just load up the game and away you go? #3. How do you role-play doing the same content (dungeons) over and over? #4. Is there any websites etc that I can look at to increase my knowledge of the games lore as to role-play better? #5. Where is the best place to meet others that role-play? I appreciate any help you can give, thanks! Link to comment
Sounsyy Posted January 18, 2015 Share #2 Posted January 18, 2015 1. That's entirely up to you! I know there are some RPers who do everything ICly, including the Main Story Quests, the side quests, IC dungeons, etc. But, if you don't feel like that path is right for your character, you are certainly not held to do things that way. For instance, my character is not an adventurer, so if I'm doing quests or story or dungeons, I am OOC 100%. So feel to pick and choose when/where you feel its appropriate for your character to be in character. 2. This also varies from roleplayer to roleplayer I think. I have a very general idea of my character's life and goals, so when I log in, I have a vague over-arching plot I try to set for myself, but much like a TV show, there's days or episodes in which I stray from her main arc and have some day in the life RP. 3. Again, this really depends on if you even wish to do IC dungeons. Many shy away from it, while others set up events with friends and create a specific plot purpose for going into a given dungeon. You may run the dungeon, but that dungeon is just a setting that doesn't necessarily reflect the Game Story reason you would normally run the dungeon. 4. There is a ton of lore in FFXIV, but unfortunately it's very spread out across many sites and sources and there's really no one single good place to look. I can recommend a few places like the Official Lore Forums (Old) which is closing soon, the Official Lore Forums (New), Gamerescape has a decent lore archive, the RPC's own WIKI, and this gem. But honestly, the single best place to look is in game. Read quest, FATE, and leve text. Read item descriptions and pay attention to the story. XIV likes to drop little tidbits in the most insignificant of places. That said, it's a lot to sift through, so if you have any specific questions or just wanna talk about lore feel free to send me a message here or in game! I'll do my best to help you out. ^^ 5. The two biggest RP servers in game that I'm aware of are Balmung and Gilgamesh. On Balmung one of the biggest RP hubs is the Quicksand, which is the Adventurers' Guild in Ul'dah. But you can also find RP happening in many other places. Hope this helps! ^^ Link to comment
Du'lance Fiourtune Posted January 18, 2015 Author Share #3 Posted January 18, 2015 Yes I'm already on Balmung and discovered The Quicksand, was just curious about other places. Thanks for the quick reply! Link to comment
Ligardian Dreamer Posted January 18, 2015 Share #4 Posted January 18, 2015 Welcome! "May your path in the light of the crystal" be filled with many memories and experiences! 1. Some take this lightly while others really will go through such lengths as to roleplay out what they do. In the end, it's up to you how you wanna go about it I think =) 2. I think that depends. Some may take the time to really develop their characters while others go into the game with a least something and then they just add to it and develop from there as they go along. 3. I don't know... In my opinion, I don't think you'll have to worry because unless you have to perform a dungeon by yourself... If you're with people, it's always going to bring something new and unique to the table... But then again, it may be that I don't quite understand what you're asking ><; 4. As Sounsyy said, just look into those site links and also look around here in the forums. (I also need to get familiar with the lore as well so I get where you're coming from!) 5. Server-wise, I always keep hearing about Balmung and Gilgamesh. As for if you were to mean within the game... I do find that the Quicksand in Ul'dath is particularly active...I'm aware of anywhere else since I'm still fairly new around here >w< ... But definitely keep an eye out for any community RP events that get announced and such on here! It definitely helps to get some pretty significant experience with roleplaying with the community. Trust me on this one. Good luck! Link to comment
Du'lance Fiourtune Posted January 19, 2015 Author Share #5 Posted January 19, 2015 Noob question to be sure, but I noticed when examining other players, thwubhave a custom message displayed like "walk-up rep welcome" etc. I can't seem to find where to set that. Link to comment

Nah... We all start from somewhere, trust me X3 One way is to open up the party member menu, right click your name, and an option to "edit search info" should be there. I hope the rest is explanatory from there... Just be mindful of the text limitations when you mess with it though. Link to comment
Duskwright Posted January 19, 2015 Share #7 Posted January 19, 2015 Welcome to FFXIV, The RPC and to Roleplaying! As for your questions, I have some answers! #1. Apart from OC moments, is everything you do IC, such as the quests etc? The only things I ever do ICly is when I'm roleplaying. I have a very awkward sense when it comes to RPing and I have to put my mind into it and basically absorb my character or I can't concentrate and end up losing interest in Roleplay. #2. Do you pre-plan what your character is going to do and their story or do you just load up the game and away you go? Very rarely do I pre-plan. I tend to just let the Twelve take the Wheel and just watch, and possibly add my own Destructive sense to things. ;D #3. How do you role-play doing the same content (dungeons) over and over? I've never Roleplayed in Dungeons before, I plan to sometime in the future, as for just the same content. You kinda just hope either you or your partner can keep things interesting. #4. Is there any websites etc that I can look at to increase my knowledge of the games lore as to role-play better? I'm not the best person to ask regarding this. I use the FFXIV Official Forums, Google Occasionally and primarily the RPC. :> #5. Where is the best place to meet others that role-play? The single most common spot of RP is in Ul'dah, The Quicksand Inn. Though if you're like me and don't care for overly crowded areas, then you just try and make connections on here in the "Making Connections" Sub-Forum. Or join a primarily dominate Roleplay Free-Company. I hope these assist you, and I look forward to seeing you around in the world of Eorzea! Welcome to Eorzea, Roleplaing, FFXIV and the RPC once again! Link to comment
SilverWolfIMHP Posted January 19, 2015 Share #8 Posted January 19, 2015 Greetings Hillbilly Thought I'm a long time Rper going back a good 20 years. *Shakes cane* You Young-ins with ya fancy MMOs, Way back when we had AOL chat rooms and we liked it! Many have said much the same I would have. I make it even simpler Roleplay is superpose to be fun. If it's not fun then something is wrong. How much OOC and IC you do is a matter of taste and style. If you come up with a grand backstory, Idea, and goal that's fine, it's also fine to just let a character grow. Sometimes I don't finalize a character until I rped him/her/it for a week. Figuring out personality quarks, taste, and all the goodies that make the Character seem real. I am new to Final Fantasy 14 ARR, heck I'm new to Final Fantasy in general only game I played before was Final Fantasy Tactics. So i'm a noob as well been data mining for lore and info. Don't let something stress you out if things don't go as you planned. Like combat plans tend to go astray when engaged. Sometimes that's a good thing had some very fun RP moments that were out of the blue random chance. Link to comment
Du'lance Fiourtune Posted January 19, 2015 Author Share #9 Posted January 19, 2015 Thanks for all the input and help from everyone so far. I finally just decided to jump into the whole RP thing last night inside The Quicksand, I would say that it was reasonably successful, though I'm sure I made a few mistakes. As much as I've wanted to try the whole RP thing for probably the last few years, I'm disappointed I didn't try it sooner, in just the few hours I spent, I could tell that RPing can bring a totally different breathe of fresh air into the game. Not sure but I've may of seen a few fellow forum goers there as well... Link to comment
Kage Posted January 19, 2015 Share #10 Posted January 19, 2015 Welcome! Mostly everyone has touched on what I'd answer to your questions. A lot of us do in fact congregate near the RP hubs because well... they're just that. The hubs. Some of us also prefer the areas etc. Feel free to ask more questions. I'm sure you were just fine with your RP. If not, most people are kind about giving you a slight nudge. If they aren't kind, well they're not the type you want to RP with anyway! Edit: If you're on PC, you can Ctrl+F, right click your name, and hit "Edit Search Info" There's a character limit for the text box but you should be fine. Link to comment
SilverWolfIMHP Posted January 19, 2015 Share #11 Posted January 19, 2015 I'm still trying to get onto Belmung myself. I noticed a few good guides for beginer Rpers on these forums. Two simple rules. Rp your own character not someone's else. As in don't post what happens let them decide. Example *Draws a fist and punches Hillbilly in the nose* is bad form. I posted that you get hit. Good form would be *Throws a punch for Hillbilly's nose hoping to punch the smug look of his face.* The second form leaves you to choose if you get hit or not. Second YOU CAN GET HIT! avoid being a God mode as in someone who so skilled they can't be harmed or laugh at the attempt at being harmed. That and those who seem to be able to do anything well. Follow those basic tips and the rest should be fine. Link to comment
Du'lance Fiourtune Posted January 20, 2015 Author Share #12 Posted January 20, 2015 Yes though I inly know a little about RP, I'm already aware of God modding and I have no desire to spoil anyone else's fun with that BS. Link to comment
