  1. First of all, great opening post. Really informative. Even if it's not meant to be taken as lore or absolute truth, it's a really good starting point for establishing more baser emotions for your character. Culture and civilization influence who we are, but these things are not formed in spite of, but around our baser nature. There's a reason why food and shelter are considered basic human rights under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It's because these are basic biological needs. Our societies are built around our instincts and our nature as animals. That's why we have parental leave. Because if we were emperor penguins, we could just leave our children standing on the icy shores of Antarctica for 3 months, losing up to 50% of their total body weight, while we go off fishing. We wouldn't need parental leave. But we're primates, and our young are born early and undeveloped in comparison to most other animals. They need constant attention, and so we organize our societies around that fact. Culture doesn't develop in a vaccuum. The social structures of any species is based around breeding. And even when you don't know the specifics of a culture, it's still important to have some sort of foundation to build it on. Secondly, thank you for trying to be objective. Especially when it comes to matters of morality, that's a difficult thing for a lot of people to handle. As a Swede, I do see my ancestors get a bad rap as being bloodthirsty monsters far too frequently. In reality, they just had a different culture than the Christian French and Englishmen who hated them so much. In particular, a different view of death. Not as something to be feared and avoided at all costs, but as an integral part of life, and something to embrace. If you lived honourably and died well you went to Valhalla, that was a gift. Death on the battlefield was not something to fear, it was something to look forward to. To a judeo-christian person that might be morally objectionable, but there's nothing say the judeo-christian viewpoint is correct. And the same applies here. Just because we as humans view something as wrong, or desirable, that doesn't mean we should apply our own values and morals to the miqo'te. If all you're going to do is RP a 21st century human with cat ears, what's the point? That's not interesting. And last but not least, I'm actually currently trying to write up some backstory and tribal structure for a northern Lynx tribe, and a lot of it is based on norse culture, because it's something I'm familiar with. I've even integrated a sort of Thing as the main governmental structure. The harem structure could also function within a norse inspired setting, since for the norsemen, it was perfectly acceptable for a married man to sleep with other women, as long as they were of lower status than his wife, and not someone else's wife. Having bedslaves was common practice. Now, miqo'te would naturally not be slaves, but it could open up the possibility within the tribe for allowing romantic love, while at the same time leaving room for the males to still adhere to the lore and perform their duties of breeding with multiple partners. Another thing I've done is assign the male to a more intimate role in parenting when it comes to male children. My reasoning being that the Nunh would want his male offspring to grow up strong, so that they can have the best chance at becoming Nunh themselves. This way I can integrate males a bit more into the parenting process, which gives me more room to flesh them out as characters. They're not just that strong dude who bones everyone. They're fathers who care about their children.
  2. Everything you do is reflective of who you are as a person. There's no OOC in real life.
  3. There was a guy on Cerberus hanging in the octant just inviting anyone who ran past him to join his free company. Being indiscriminate when it comes to who is allowed to join your linkshell/free company is a horrible idea. You'll end up with a miniature version of the general chat. And then what's the point?

    A sad day

*Enters password* >Log In >Play >Start >New Character >Load Appearance Data: OK >Save Slot 2: Yes >Confirm >Save Appearance Data?: No >Sixth Umbral Moon: 21st: Confirm >Azeyma: OK >Marauder: Confirm *Scroll down to the bottom to find Balmung* >Update *Exasperated sigh* If you had told me a week ago that this would be my new daily routine, I would have smacked you with a pancake and called you a fool and a liar. Yet here we are...
  6. First 3 month patch: Musketeer. HAVE FAITH!
  7. I think it's fine to weave it into your storyline if you're smart about it. For instance the assault on Castrum Novum. Instead of being in the infiltration party that fought Nael Van Darnus, you were one of the hundreds of Grand Company soliders who took part in the diversion. That's perfectly fine and plausible.
  8. *Frowns* cats are way better... (; 一_一)
  9. I think any role that should by all rights exalt your character to a position of great renown or influence in the world, should be avoided at all costs. There just isn't enough room in the world for everyone to be the dragonborn. (just an example) That's why it's better that no one claims to be a mythical hero, and just ignores any feats of greatness, for the sake of better RP. That's my view on the whole thing.
  10. Sort of related question. I want to be a lancer with my character. But I want to start in Limsa for RP reasons. But apparently someone decided it was a splendid idea to sink the ferry. So it seems you're stuck in whichever city-state you start in until you've done enough main story quests to get the airship pass. I'm not happy with that at all. Is there any way around that?
  11. Personally I think the armor and clothing in XIV is fantastic. It strikes a perfect balance between realistic/practical and ornate. I especially like how female armour is actual armour in most cases. Unlike most other MMORPGs where female "armour" is a metal bikini with glowing spiked shoulderpads that shoot lava or something. I absolutely hate that kind of stuff. (Dragoon relic armour being an exception for all counts. They should have kept the XI style.)
  12. It doesn't make any sense that arcanist would be necessary. Seeing as how Black Mage has been around since 1.0, and arcanist was added in ARR. They wouldn't just change the requirements and screw over everyone who was a BM before ARR.
  13. Yes, and I've had news videos pulled from my YouTube channel as well, on behalf of NHK, Japan's national broadcasting corporation. But I challenged the decision, under fair use amongst other reasons, and got YouTube to put it back up again. YouTube generally just takes things down if asked by a copyright holder, even if they shouldn't. Because the people who make the videos generally just accept it without question. But if you challenge the decision, you force YouTube to take an actual look at it, and not just defer to the judgement of the copyright holder, and then they tend to put it back up again.
  14. If you want to really insult someone, how about: "The next time you decide to mate with your chocobo, make sure you whipe his 'love' out of your hair before you enter a tavern."
  15. They still have copyright, as such it can still be pulled regardless if they were to find out. If someone has a copyrighted image and someone posts it for 'free' it can still be pulled because of copyright laws. Square Enix is quite a large company and unlike someone like me, who is a mere photographer-peon, has a lot more clout. If it doesn't follow their TOS it'll be pulled. Yes, but if you edit the picture first, and paint a horse on it, then it's considered your own creative work, and you can claim fair use as long as you're not benefiting financially from someone elses intellectual property. That's how video clips from TV shows can stay on youtube if they just flip the video. And also why AMV's are allowed to stay up there.
  16. You both have valid points, and some not so valid points. When it comes to whether or not the Nunh has an influential position in the tribe, that's up for debate. Their purpose in the tribe is clearly not that of a leader or any sort of authority, and I don't think they would jeopardize their position within the tribe by shirking their duties and withholding sex. Remember, they're not called Alpha males, they're called Breeding males. They're the males who have earned the right and duty to breed. I imagine it sort of like the heavy-weight champion of the world title. It doesn't mean you get to make decisions, or that you're somehow in a priveleged position, it just means you were the best at punching people in the face until they passed out. But that doesn't make them unimportant. And I certainly don't agree that they need protection. I think the mere existence of this caste system among males shows that the strength of the males is highly valued. If they weren't able to fend for themselves, I think few females would give them a second glance. The naming conventions I think is just a practical way of keeping track of which kid belongs to which male. You wouldn't want any accidental inbreeding. It makes sense that a male has a lot of kids, but the females probably only have a few each. So by giving the child the name of the Nunh who sired them, it's easy to keep track of who the child's parents are. What I do agree with though, is the notion that the females don't hold any particular loyalty to a Nunh, and I'm backing that up by the lore outlining how easy it is for a Tia to replace a Nunh by simply besting him in combat. The Nunh would then revert to a Tia, and all of the females would now mate with the new Nunh. Surely if they were loyal to him, rather than the tribe, they wouldn't abandon him the moment he lost a fight? However, I don't think that makes them discardable. Males are supposedly rare. I don't know where I read it but I definitely did. And since the males are key to the continuation of the species, it would make sense for them to be treated as a valuable commodity. Even if they're not one in a million, you wouldn't want to lose your males unnecessarily. One could speculate that seeker society would have very detailed rules for how and when males could challenge and fight eachother, and strict punishments for anyone who broke the rules. For instance, if a Nunh felt threatened by a young Tia and attacked him pre-emptively, that would probably go over as well as Frey family wedding. I'm thinking the challenges are probably quite a ritualized affair.
  17. I'm pretty sure Fair Use still applies. As long as you're not making money off of it. They can't do anything about it.
  18. Maybe magic is physically exhausting. Sometimes things that seem like they shouldn't, require a great deal of physical fitness. Like playing music.
  19. *Raises hand* I'm in that boat right now. I was really bummed that I didn't get into the EA because I had only payed for 2 months of subscription back in 1.0, the 27th rolls around and I finally get to play. Or so I thought. Turns out I'm going to have to sit here looking at my character and refreshing the world information until next week. When their way of "enjoying the game" is going AFK and denying others the opportunity to play, I will most certainly hold it against them. It doesn't really matter if it's the only way to guarantee a slot on a server. They're essentially saying "To hell with everyone that isn't me." and no matter your reasons, that's a shitty thing to do. No single person can fix this problem on their own. But you can certainly decide whether or not you want to be part of the problem.
  20. I'd say you should consider making a Tia character instead, as they have much more freedom since they're not tied to their duties as a breeding male. It might be difficult to keep coming up with reasons for why a Nunh would be out and about going on adventures and stuff when he should be busy making kittens and strengthening the tribe. If you're really set on your character being a Nunh though, I suggest you really think it through, so your reasons doesn't come off as half baked.
  21. That brings up an interesting question. How do you think the familial relations look among the miqo'te? They're not exactly monogamous creatures, and according to the lore the rites and rituals regarding who can and cannot be a Nunh is to ensure that the offspring are of the finest stock. That seems very detached and practical. It doesn't sound like love ever enters into it. Not romantic love anyway. Could it be that since the Nunh is just a breeding male, he is expected to sire many children, and thus would be too busy to take part in raising any of them? And so, perhaps strong familial bonds would only exist between the mother and the child, and not the father and the child.
  22. I think this is a great idea. Man, I knew I shouldn't have deleted my lvl 25 character from 1.0...
  23. I'm currently thinking about what to name my miqo'te male. I really want to put him in an X clan. Because the Lynx is a cool animal. But it's difficult coming up with a decent sounding name that starts with a short "She-" sound. I'm thinking about where this clan would come from though, and I thought a snowy place would be best, then they could have fluffy tails, and everything will be awesome. Maybe Coerthas, or somewhere between Ishgard and Sharlayan. According to rumors and concept art, Sharlayan is apparently supposed to be snowy. It'd be like a northern clade of miqo'te. I don't have much else figured out yet. So if anyone wants to chime in, we can build something from the ground up. Get surnames and stuff sorted out. I think it could be a great possibility for some awesome RP.
  24. Yeah. I get trying to funnel people into less populated servers to ease the congestion for everyone, and avoid having some servers that are just perfect while others have queues of 300+ people waiting to play. But there has to be better ways of handling it. For those of us who have specific servers to be on, it's a major inconvenience.
