  1. Thanks! Swift is going to have a room remodel this weekend (his is much more Doman style since NIN is my only focused job for him), but really starting to brainstorm plans for my alt's room. Just have to rank up with the Grand Company.....to have permission to get a room... in our own house. >_>
  2. Apologies first if another location would be better for posting this. That said, I'm looking for help of a different kind than typical character/story/RP ideas. It's actually with one of my character's private chamber! The character's origins are from my own original story I've been brainstorming and picking at for years (geez, over a decade now?). In the world she's from, she's from essentially Japan, so Doma would be the closest FFXIV equivalent we have (I haven't really fleshed out the concept for her Eorzea version, so don't worry too much on "Doman details" here ), and she's a (mostly) reformed pirate. I'd like to design her private chamber to give that "pirate captain's quarters" feel to it and I'm trying to decide what should go in there. Obviously the treasure chest, but other than that, I was hoping some creative types might help with some suggestions. The easy road would be to use a lot of the Limsa designed furniture, but I do want to be a bit creative. Considering the canopy bed for some luxury (any other suggestions?), a desk with papers and a globe, a map on the wall, the wheel on the wall, etc. Should a former pirate captain's room be cluttered, do you think? I figured I'd find a ton of reference pictures with a google search, but surprised I'm having a challenge finding others with pirate theme private chambers. Any suggestions would be most welcome!
  3. I did a transcript (man, links are hard to see here) as best I could while watching it.
  4. First off: Apologies if this isn't the best place for this post. Wasn't 100% sure where it should go. Hi folks. Been scarce around here. Unfortunately my time to get into RPing on XIV has proven scarce as I've been trying to put more effort into dedicated time for writing, so my Free Company has shifted from plans for a RP FC to basically just being a group of RL friends. There's 6 of us making up the FC, but we wouldn't exclude others we got along with or anything. However, that's not the purpose of this post! What we're in real need of is a few allies that might be interested in running raids. We're not aggressively pushing for progression, but we would like to be able to push into Bahamut's Coil and Extreme Primals. We're a laid back group...You might say "They are a silly lot" even. We need 2 people to join us, usually on Wed nights around 8 PM CST and it doesn't necessarily have to be 2 static spots. If we had 5 or 6 people interested from other FCs (or a quarter of a ho-jillion) that are on around that time who don't have their own group and might wanna hop in once in a while, we'd be delighted to build that network of friends. (Unfortunately "Debauchery Tea Party" Linkshell was taken). :3 We have, for sure: 2 tanks (PLD and a WAR who threatens he's leaving to be RDM when it comes along) 1 healer (WHM) 3 DPS (monk-to-be-ninja, BLM ((BLM also has been healing as WHM lately...and also claims RDM is his)), and bard) If anyone's interested, please let me know here or poke me in game!
  5. I chose monk solely as a placeholder until ninja. I'm right there with you.
  6. "Same as the old boss" was the only thing that came to mind seeing the thread title.
  7. It is, but got delayed. I've been so focused on leveling and seeing the main story , I haven't spent time building up the FC/LS with Roleplayers and exploring RP myself. I blame Square for an engaging story! And I was out of game due to work for a couple weeks! It's been super busy. :dazed: Will be getting back into Eorzea more regularly and looking for folks to help build this. I have the Linkshell ready and the FC is formed (rank 5) though the other members are Non-RPers (RL friends, but they're nice peoples).
  8. I've not seen anything official on this in game, but I'd imagine they'd simply be seen as the women of their tribe. It doesn't seem too often that multiple nunhs are living in the same area, so it's basically just the women of their tribe. I don't get the impression they'd be considered wives as there's not really any mutual love between them so much as he's the best breeding stock and he'll father her children if she's going to have them. In the desert in south Thanalan, a miqo'te female basically asks her sister when her next breeding is set for. So I'd imagine the nunh sees them as his women of his tribe. Regarding the monks, I think this is the easiest way to think of it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qi http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chakra jwSoCaqNYHk You can also think of the chakra and all the stuff related to the monks along the same lines as Star Wars' The Force (which is also based of the ideas of qi)
  9. I think you're probably 100% on the money here. They weren't expecting the game to be this popular overall after 1.0, but I think like you said, they REALLY didn't expect this much interest outside of Japan. It's not niche anymore, though. Gaming seriously is not a niche market anymore. Now, the division of gaming; PC, Console, and the new bulk being social or app games, divides the issue a bit more. GTA V is not the fastest selling video game of all time. It is the fastest selling entertainment property of all time at 1 Billion dollars on sell through in THREE DAYS. It made $800 million in ONE day. The Avengers' 3-day box office take was just under 207.5 million. The Avengers' total gross is 1.5 billion dollars worldwide. Avatar sits as the highest box office gross of all time at 2.7 Billion over its entire theatrical release, but only 77 million its opening weekend. And a video game has shattered those 3 day records. The majority of gamers are in their 30s now, but the teens and 20s continue to enter the market. Female gamers have exploded with apps and social gaming. It's simply not a niche market anymore. However, you're right that the "blockbuster" or AAA titles are stifling the industry. Studios want the biggest return, so they play it safe with sequels instead of trying something new. That's not bad in its own right. Uncharted 2 and 3 arguably improved from the original Uncharted. Despite some opinions, I thought the new Tomb Raider was fantastically well done, and it did make a profit, just not as much as SE hoped. But then you have the Resident Evil series' downward slide, you've got a new Call of Duty every year. Both of which make money hand over fist, despite not being terribly well received. But is playing it safe anything we haven't seen before? Mega Man 2, 3, 4, 5 on NES? Tweaks, but the same basic formula. Fortunately, Sony and Microsoft seem to be realizing that AAA games can't carry the industry due to the high cost and risk of profit yield and are opening the doors to the indie games market more and more. Android and iOS already offer a great platform for indie games as well. With that opening wider, it gives a larger playing field to spread things out and even the largest studios might start trying their hand at smaller scope, simpler and less expensive games. The indie market is also proving that gamers love simpler games as much as the AAA titles and it doesn't have to be a summer blockbuster every release. (Seriously, Activision, you don't have the Bruckheimer us every year) Then you've got Mega Man's creator having recently looked for $900,000 in crowd sourcing for Mighty No. 9, the spiritual successor to Mega Man, and in 30 days they raised over 3 million dollars. I don't think we're heading for a dot com crash nor, more related, a video game crash of the 80s, but we're definitely going to see a different playing field in the next 5-10 years.
  10. I really don't think people are understanding that they might have to accept another country's cultural views. Bottom line, it's their game, their decision. I still expect /sleep will be put in eventually, but if they don't it doesn't bother me too much. Nice, sure, but not a necessity. We've been RPing in MMOs without emotes, even without graphics, for years. That said, this IS a "what do you want to see" thread, so the wishlists can be anything each of us want/hope to see eventually. I only meant to reference Yoshida's comment, not to derail the intention of the thread.
  11. Legend of Korra: Chapter 2, Book of Spirits
  12. You can scream about it if you like, I'm just saying it's a Japanese game and they're going to do things that fits their culture. Japan is very much a culture where the collective good is more important than the individual. If they perceive a greater chance for distasteful imagery than a minority of RP benefit, they'll choose to avoid what they feel is inappropriate for their game rather than give the benefit of the doubt. If that's a massive problem, well, welcome to the shoe on the other foot. Heck, I've seen people throwing absolute bitch fits over maintenance being in "prime time hours." But it's not...in Japan. That said, please note I said the animators are working on figuring out what they want to do there and Yoshida has only advised caution. He didn't say a /sleep emote would never be put in game, just that they want to avoid inappropriate imagery. And again, innuendo in text may be perceived differently than imagery among the developers. And also again, there may even be different restrictions in Japan between the two. They can get away with damn near anything in video games, but their ratings/censorship does have peculiar nuances. I'm trying to find the transcript with EXACTLY what he said. Here it is, it's just a minor statement: y; Right now we don’t have a sleep motion, so the other day the motion team asked me if you wanted to do this soon? y; It makes it possible to come up with some dangerous images, so I’m telling them it has to be safe and not cross that line. y; Listen up everyone, don’t do anything bad. http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/threads/63655-Translation-Japanese-to-English?p=1322772&viewfull=1#post1322772 So I'm sure they'll offer something, but they're being mindful about it, that's all.
  13. Super over-used now, I'm sure, but I like it, so I'm going to use it again.... "The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It's a very mean and nasty place and I don't care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't about how hard you're hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. " I think that definitely goes towards the hero's character.
  14. Except for my chocobo's name inspiration. Kuzco was an awesome protagonist. And K'uzco is an awesome chocobo. Pacha was a good guy too and totally relatable. And Lilo & Stitch weren't goody two shoes either. Okay, I'll stop and be good now. >_> <_< (K'uzco is an awesome chocobo) /runs away
  15. I'm curious to see how that works out myself. I need to see what the actual items look like in use and on characters before I make a decision, but hell, it could look like it fits in with some of the other outfits. I'm not terribly familiar with Lightning, but the elezen female starting outfit has a similar design feel to me. I'll have to wait and see, but I'm sure a looooot of people will be wearing them at first. But I would just see them as having poor fashion sense IC.
  16. To strive to be one of the elite, to be the best, is fine. Elitism, the attitude that you are among the best and others are below you, is bad. That's my opinion based on the notion of the direct definition. Magellan touched on a tightrope topic as well. Helping to give new RPers constructive criticism is not something everyone is good at. It's not elitist to offer suggestions and help try to make someone a better RPer so they fit into the game's setting better. And yes, part of RP should be trying to fit into the game's setting.
  17. There may be other considerations to take into account, such as expectations, regulations, cultural stances, etc, etc in Japan. Keep in mind that they ARE developing with their Japanese base primarily in mind with the addition that it's going out worldwide. Gaming culture is extremely different in Japan and you've got genres of visual novels and others that can get downright hentai. From a Japanese developers' perspective, there may be some desire to avoid any such associations from visual depiction. Japan's a much more open society in terms of sexual censorship and they get away with far more, but they also have particular nuances about what is and isn't okay. Visual depiction may be more questionable than verbal innuendo. I'm not certain, but it's something that sprang to mind as a possibility. More likely, I'd imagine, is the fact that sexual innuendo in text is probably humorous in Japan while visual depiction of such acts is considered more graphic and not just for laughs. Either way, I'm pretty confident the cultural difference accounts for a lot of their decisions.
  18. "Nobody ever considers themselves to be the villain." But that's why the whole suggestion being made is the games follow the international war laws, Geneva Convention, things like that. It's supposedly what we all agreed were the "rules" of war. Sun Tzu would probably laugh at all of it. >_> I don't think anything like this would ever go in, but I'd still be intrigued by a game that did have more than just "go pew pew pew everything" as part of the gameplay.
  19. I don't think Prototype would count under "realistic war game" (PS, that's a cool raccoon drawing. It makes me want him as a wisecracking sidekick...)
  20. That's what's taking me so long to start looking for others to join my FC/LS for RP purposes. I'm trying to hammer out what's expected and the rules. I think that's the biggest part is having a strong foundation and structure for the group to know what's expected and what's to be adhered to. There's a blood elf guild on Wyrmrest over on WoW called Selama Ashalanore and a Forsaken one called Scythe of Sylvanas that, just looking over their websites, are very detailed and established as to what they expect from their members and what guidelines you would have to adhere to. You can agree or disagree with them, of course, but then you know quite well if you'd fit in. I think more guilds should really lay out the details expected from a RP perspective. Um...yeah, taking them in is exactly what sets the hero apart from the anti-hero. That's the difference between Batman vs Judge Dredd, plain and simple. That doesn't make the hero boring. Ignoring the impact, the struggle, and the overwhelming desire to butcher them is what would make them boring. Addressing those feelings is where the heroic character is interesting in that scenario; not their refusal to be a murderer themselves. To me, it's more boring when the character does go all rage and kills them all off and then goes on about their business without a care. Nobody seems to want to delve into the impact all this murder and blood shed their characters are surrounded by has on them. Truthfully and realistically, a lot of the characters in games/stories/movies are likely pretty messed up in the head after everything they go through. Marvel has long done a fantastic job of portraying heroes who aren't anti-hero and deal with moral gray, but their larger struggles are their own internal ones. Stark's a good guy, he's a hero archetype. He's also kind of an arrogant jerk and an alcoholic. That's kind of a huge boon to playing any character well; dealing with their own personal struggles/demons with more difficulty than the external ones set before them.
  21. That's not really anything to do with roleplaying "good guys" so much as just simply bad roleplayers, which yields the same reaction as any other: :frustrated: I dunno... I'd classify Vash the Stampede as true good, but wouldn't say he's a boring character.
  22. Honestly, if they added this to it and worked it into the game properly, I might actually have more interest in playing an FPS. The current "shoot everything and don't get shot" extent of those games are /yaaaaaaaaawn Having more of these games with varied missions, rules/laws you have to abide by, etc. could potentially make them more interesting than just shoot shoot shoot in a hail of bullets. It would take a LOOOT of work to make it actually an engaging aspect of FPS games, though. LeCard's example of enemies looking to surrender, having to subdue them, handcuff them, handle that aspect of the mission instead of just "er mah gerd shert shert shert them all, keep sherting til they're all deeeerd!" And as said above...if you're playing COD: Black Ops (or any game) on zombie mode, there are no laws. ZOMBIES AREN'T PEOPLE ANYMORE!
  23. D'oh, I won't be around that night. Oh well...hope it goes well!
  24. I prefer to play good guys, honestly. As others have pointed out, even good guys can stray into the morally gray at times. But my hunter in WoW, and now this thieving miqo'te here in Eorzea is stealing it from him, came up with an all encompassing statement that applies to how I try to play my "good guys." "There is good and evil in this world, but it's up to each of us to find the black and white within the gray." Basically, the world isn't black and white, but it's up to the individual to sift through and find what's right and what's wrong. There are a lot of ways to play the "good guy" without being boring. Batman is seen as a darker good guy. You just can't argue that Batman is morally gray or evil. He's driven by justice, he wants to stop crime, he wants to protect citizens, he's arguably obsessed with protecting his city from crime. He will beat a criminal silly, he'll break bones, he'll scare the poo out of them, but he won't kill them. He also alienates those close to him and pretty much forsakes any chance at a stable, normal life or any form of relationship. Spider-Man's another example of playing a good guy but still having flaws. Spidey does ANYTHING to do what's right. He's the type of character the OP is talking about, the white knight, the Jedi, the hero. But here's the thing that made Spider-Man endearing over the years....he suffers for it. That's definitely something you could play up when playing a heroic character; it's not an easy life. Peter has money problems, he's had relationship problems, he's disappointed people who care about him, he's sacrificed a better life for himself, and he's been publicly hated in the papers and by half the population of the city he strives to protect. But he keeps doing it without any benefit or "thank you" simply because it's the right thing to do. I thought they made a good move a couple years ago when they added in Pete hitting a breaking point and vowing "nobody dies when I'm around. No civilians, no allies, no villains. NOBODY DIES." Working that into Eorzea.....very difficult. >_> So you can definitely look at how your character sacrifices in being a good guy as well. Going further back, there's Robin Hood. Without a doubt, he's a criminal. He was a traitor to his kingdom by breaking the laws of the ruling king (arguable as King Richard wasn't declared dead and John was just steward of the kingdom in the tales of course, but you get the point). But he was a hero because he was a criminal in order to do what's right. So no...I don't think playing good guys is boring. I think they can be very interesting. Just don't forget they have their flaws and their weaknesses as well. I need to really finish putting together the details on Wardens of Light and start recruiting to the IC Linkshell and the Free Company. They're meant to be good guys with shades of gray that can cause debate and questions amongst themselves.
  25. I'm kind of cautious on that. It's cool on paper to think of all these different classes getting unique mounts, but it also dilutes the whole "Final Fantasy" feel when the most common mount in the continent is rarely ever seen. How many non-horse mounts were in Lord of the Rings? 2 total, both flying and rarely seen. I'd actually like to see the chocobo remain the most commonly seen and widespread mount and maintaining a sense of the world that's being presented by Square. A lot of the ideas that are cool, to me, cause a long term deterioration of MMOs as a world we're living in and become more and more of "just a video game" feel. Eorzea feels fairly grounded but if we started to have dragons flying around as personal servants and 20 different wild vicious flesh eating beasts suddenly becoming our personal beast of burden, it loses the flavor of being that world. A few others, I saw here I was interested to comment on: Additional ways to acquire gil I know they’re looking at ways to increase gil accumulation. I think it’s an area that has to beapproached carefully. I remember howbadly gil inflation impacted FF XI after only 1 year in Japan (painful for new US players) and it’s always an issue with any MMO. Right now, though, I think they're aware of the need for a little more gil acquisition, especially with houses on the way! A /sleep or /liedown emote. They’re working on figuring this out, but Yoshida has urged caution to the artists as it can be used to create inappropriate imagery they do not want in the game. And if that is a concern for them, I willappreciate a lack of /sleep and being restrained to sleeping in the inns. It really makes me happy to see thedevelopers thinking of the long term integrity of the game. RPers may use these things tastefully, but the devs will have to look at it more collectively. An alternative I'd be interested in seeing is having tents as an item that allows you to gain rested xp when logging off away from the inn. Expanded dye system. Remove the restrictions on dungeon andAF gear to make them dye-able. Expand the color choices. Create primary and secondary dye parts on each armor for even better variability. I'm not dyeing (get it har har) for the secondary dye, but I sure wouldn't complain about it if we got it! For expanding artifact gear to be dyed, they could even add restrictions if they really felt they wanted. I assume basically the AF is the designconcept for those classes, the iconic look they want associated with it. They want the iconic dragoon to look as theiconic dragoon was designed, so if they want to restrict that to certain colors, I’d be okay with that. My guessis they don’t want pink, purple, orange, or yellow dragoons, etc. but surely there’s a middle ground. I’m very much about customization and lookingunique with vanity armor to show what you like and the dye in game now is pretty awesome, but if there’s a limit Square Enix wants to maintain, I fully support their decision. The developershave to keep FF XIV on track to THEIR vision of the game. Losing sight of their vision to meet our collective requestsis a dangerous path and honestly I feel like that’s what severely crippled WoW. If Square thinks a dragoon should be wearingarmor (of specified color options) instead of robes and a white mage shouldn’t be squishy despite appearing to be wearing a full set of plate armor, I think that’s part of the vision of Eorzea they should maintain. I'm not really bothered by the armor type restriction expected to come in. I like customization, Ilike being able to be unique, but I don’t like when MMOs become a muddled mess because the developers relaxed the world they intended to design and offered more and more concessions to their vision to meet player requests. Eorzea is Yoshida and his team's world. I'm just a visitor in it. I will explore what they have set out to present and offer me, but after seeing WoW slide from Classic/BC further and further based on OUR (the players) feedback, I'm much more cautious on my change wishlists these days. The top things I'd like to see introduced, though: Armor/Dye Preview In WoW it's called dressing room, others call it preview pane, etc. Basically being able to see what the armor looks like before you buy it and the ability to preview how the different dyes would make it look before actually buying and dyeing. Vanity Slots/Transmog/Appearance Tab Call it what you will, but I'm looking forward to being able to wear the armor set I want while receiving the stat benefits from the best gear I've acquired. I'm okay with having this restricted to only armor I could normally wear as that class, but it's always a shame to say goodbye to a set you loved for one you don't. Right-click, report for spamming, insta-blacklist &reporting button on chat. Notification when friends on friends list logs on/off. They have this in place for Free Company, but not friends list. I'm waiting anxiously for the Ninja class or Thief class/ninja job, however it's introduced. I'm hoping for dual wielding swords for ninja as I imagine single sword would be samurai. I'm also eager to see Red Mage on behalf of a friend of mine.
