  1. Could I put my hat in for the white mage vs. Moogle?
  2. OMG they are both so beautiful! Wonderful job already Mtoto!
  3. Welcome!! It really pleases me to hear that there will be another roegadyn running around (the world just needs more roegs)!! Be warned though, you may need to pry Gerik from your leg. I never played City of Heroes but I have always heard good things about it and I know a lot of people were sad a few months back when I suppose it kind of came to a halt. Looking forward to hearing more about you in-game when things take off in a few months, and of course up until then here on the forums.
  4. I'm just kind of an impartial observer, but when I think of Deirdre I tend to think of Halone way before I'd think Menphina. Halone almost seems a perfect fit to me, actually. Can't wait to see how this turns out though. Such a great idea~ :cheer:

I know we've kind of already spoken in a sense, but welcome to the RPC officially! :cheer:
  6. Hey there!! Welcome back~! :cheer:

    Hoy!

I see the name and instinctively think of this guy: [spoil][/spoil] ...and I'm sure like so many of the other characters from the show, his name was a derivation from the scientist. In any case, welcome back to the RPC!!! :cheer:
  8. There were way too many screenshots for me to post them all, but I found a handful that spanned back a couple years from my various times with a number of different linkshells. Most of my screenshots were from one-on-one RP talks over the years, but I tried not to include so many of those and included more group pictures here. There were so many wonderful memories with so many great RPers~ My time with TALE [spoil]Noir spinning a tale at one of a number of storytelling events that I hosted: N'bo being promoted while several of us looked on: Nel, Noir, and I out doing a little training near Horizon: [/spoil] My time with Outer Heaven [spoil]The four Premiers: Eva, Castiel (before he was Kylin), Zane, Seraphine Rainfall Pillar meeting: [/spoil] My time with the Eorzean Guard [spoil]Training exercise with Dreke, Deirdre, and Oskar: Matriculation Ceremony: [/spoil] A couple of fun holiday screenies~ [spoil]Halloween: Starlight Festival: [/spoil] My time with Everwatch [spoil]Some friendly banter with Oskar: A discussion with Shien: The Fashion Show: One of Everwatch's group meditation events: Sparring with Vaelyn in Owl's Nest - he wound up falling off the ledge and getting injured shortly after this: [/spoil] My time with Crystalline [spoil]A trek out to Mor Dhona after a picnic: Met with Kylin prior to chocobo race - a race that wound up not happening sadly, but there was still some good RP that night: Some duskwight dragoons being all smexy: [/spoil] Dalamud draws nearer... 9. My view has shifted a bit with the new information and I'm glad to see that Mtoto is offering credit to the original artist in those instances. However my opinion remains unchanged that it's kind of tactless in the way this was brought up. A PM to the artist to address these concerns rather than a public outcry would have saved a lot of senseless drama and confusion.
  10. I'm not denying that this particular piece is a copy. The folds of the clothing and the shadowing is too similar for that to be coincidental. But it's also not a finished piece. If you find one that's finished where this has taken place, than I'd say you have much more right to be upset. What concerns me more than anything is that you have come here and attacked the work immediately without offering any constructive insights until much later, then ignored the couple of times it was said to be an incomplete work, and went on to denounce the entire RPC in your signature block because the argument got split from that thread so as not to pollute the gallery. From where I stand, that makes you look a bit like a troll.
  11. Mtoto said on two separate posts (earlier in this thread so I shall not link) that it wasn't done. Are artists not allowed to use reference pieces for their work? Moreover you came here and attacked an artist's in-progress work and the methods used. Maybe you should reserve judgment until the piece is finished before drawing upon yourself such ire from the rest of the community. Also taking a few opinions that differ from your own and lumping them together as the entirety of the forum is a rather hasty generalization and makes for a poor argument.
  12. I've gone ahead and split the topic as has been requested. It can just as easily be fused back together, if Mtoto for some reason wishes.
  13. I think if this criticism was a bit more constructive, it may have been better received. For myself, I've enjoyed viewing Mtoto's works these past few days for whatever that may be worth, and look forward to seeing more.
  14. Lyrical Theme Song: Tarja Turunen - Damned and Divine Instrumental Theme Song: Sanctuary of Zi'Tah - Final Fantasy XI TuvxcpQ-veg I admit I don't really watch much anime so I'm not sure what would fit. Perhaps someone else has some idea.
  15. Awww... Baby behemoth is soooo cute!! /SQUEE

When XI/RotZ news first broke, I saw the description for all the jobs and the pictures of AF. In previous games I've almost always chosen the healer class, but in a little text-based type MMO called GemStone III a long time ago I was a healer class (empath) that wielded two-handed polearms. Since then I'd always been fascinated by spears, lances, etc. So to learn of a job that not only wielded a polearm, but also featured a dragon (I'm a huge dragon fan) and wore purple (easily my favorite color by far) I was like... "Did S-E have me in mind when they made this job?!" Kain was always one of my favorite characters from the FF series as well. So that was very exciting. And I shouldn't say I really did a lot of endgame in XI. Mostly I did a lot of Dynamis (and a fair bit of Limbus). I never really fussed with Sky or Einherjar or much of that other stuff. When I wasn't doing Dynamis/Limbus, I was usually farming, crafting, or otherwise playing "money making game." I'm not sure how I would feel about them adding wyverns in XIV. I don't think that it would make me any more or less attached to the job. I'm really enjoying getting back to healing and will likely be fulltime white mage this go-round. The job just doesn't have the same flair for me as it did in XI, and I've always preferred healing classes. Even in XI my DRG spent a lot of time with /mage subjobs and there were a handful of times I mainhealed (often with another DRG) using HB triggers and Drachen/Wyrm armet gear swaps and all that. Ugh, I don't miss gear swapping....

I had sort of a similar experience with BLM on the Sylph server. I wound up leveling BLM right after ToAU came out and doing so mostly soloing from 60ish to 75 because the demand for BLM at that stage of the game was much like DRG had been. And I loathed BLM but I remember being pushed to level it because I really wanted an Optical Hat at the time, and everyone pretty much rolled their eyes when another melee wanted to tag along. Little did I realize that leveling BLM (even with utterly no emphasis on improving my mediocre nuking gear) would trap me into that job for so much stuff that I would much rather have played DRG for. One of my standout memories was a Dynamis-Beaucedine run that had been parsed prior to my finishing my relic weapon where I was dealing damage as DRG on par with a Spharai MNK in our group. That conversation was kind of funny. Her: I always thought DRG really sucked. Your dmg is just a sliver beneath mine. Me: Are you factoring in my wyvern's damage too? Her: -.- You're doing more then. Suffice it to say, when the level cap went up, the only job that went along with it was DRG. And somewhat sadly, I no longer have the time or patience to dump a lot of time into stuff like endgame or gear upgrades so I'm much more focused on RP this go-round. I've also found a lot of love for WHM. I liked XI DRG a lot more than XIV DRG but maybe that will change in ARR - I don't know. I'm sorry I didn't mean to derail your welcome thread. And I saw the other thread you posted about character backhistory and everything looks great! I, for one, am very much looking forward to meeting your character in-game in a few months. EDIT: Also Elvaan DRG. /high5 [spoil][/spoil]

Some NPC's exhibit this sort of stuff. The fellow in 1.0 that described the differences among the races/clans seemed to stereotype duskwight elezen as being thieves and brigands. Where it's unclear how much credence can be given to this guy's claim it's usually fair to say that most stereotypes exist for some reason or another, though often wind up getting embellished or exaggerated. That is only one example though, and as a duskwight character who is more lawful-good aligned I hope that more lore is released about the races and their clans so I can see if I am more of an exception to the rule or if this particular NPC was just wronged by a duskwight once so has a poor opinion of them. lol The racial 'flaws' from FFXI (elvaan=arrogance, tarutaru=cowardice, hume=apathy, mithra=jealousy, galka=rage) seem to have filtered their way into XIV but are nowhere near as pronounced as they were in XI. They're almost more of a baseline that seems to exist to be strayed from and I've enjoyed seeing much more diverse characters racially. Elezen do seem to generally be rather haughty, but considering the lore and that they were supposedly the original inhabitants of Eorzea there may be some reason for this sense of entitlement. But I don't get this vibe from all elezen NPC's, and I've encountered a good few members of the other four races who exhibit such tendencies. This same thing can be said of the other four races as well, I believe. Is it all right for a character to be racist? Absolutely! I think it's real. My own character's father has a good degree of racial bias, though much of that has not trickled down to her (fortunately for many of her miqo'te friends). While some of it stems from storyline, some of it is also akin to why your grandfather might refer to some ethnic group one way or another - not so much out of hatred or anything but more because what is considered Politically Correct now is much different than "back then" so to speak. As Tadir above said, communication is also important. I've found myself sending OOC /tells to people just to explain why my character feels as she does given some of her strong opinions about certain things. Too many times have I seen that line between IC and OOC blur, and something off-color intended to be strictly in-character is taken as an out-of-character insult. Being open to a little OOC communication to clarify why your character may be behaving a particular way may help with creating intense and believable rivalries with other characters. Sorry I kind of rambled on a bit there.

Hello and welcome from another XI career DRG! :cheer: (and I feel your pain about the loldrg thing - I spent several years proving them wrong lol) I'm unfamiliar with most of the other games, but it's still always great to see an aspiring RPer! Please don't be afraid to ask any questions if you have any. Most everyone here is very friendly and wants to help~
  20. This seemed 'headline' worthy. Moved to appropriate forum. Looking forward for mid-February now!! :cheer:
  21. :whm: I just wanted to say Merry Christmas to everyone and I hope everyone is enjoying the holiday season and blessed wishes to you all and your loved ones!! :chocobo: :cheer:
  22. I'm sure it won't be where I want it to be, but I'll upload it and send a PM to the link tomorrow afternoon (probably about 14 hours from now) before I leave for my in-laws for the couple of days following. It's not ideal but I've dropped a lot of time into it and learned a TON in just the past couple of weeks (in particular "I have a lot to learn") - but it's been a lot of fun.
  23. I'm pretty sure you'll be able to re-spec your character using the accomplishments/levels/gear/gil you've already accumulated from 1.0. I've heard you may even be able to rename. So in theory, if I wanted to, I could recreate Eva as a male hellsguard roegadyn and he'd still be a champ weaver and white mage. Whether I would be able to call him "Evan" or not - so far as I know - is still up in the air. Last I heard they were leaning towards renaming as being a possibility. So you should be able to take your existing character and change race/gender/appearance/etc. when ARR comes without any issues.
  24. This reminds me of a thread I posted a couple years back about what was termed "bandwagon" storyline elements from FFXI and other games. That is, character backhistory or plot points which may not be inherently bad or unoriginal. But, with repeated use by multiple characters, whether intentionally or through circumstance, begin to erode at that sense of uniqueness and often leave both the RPer as well as those who interact with him/her feeling a certain amount of disappointment. I think from my own experiences that it's probably fair to say that the 'turncoat Garlean' and the 'Ala Mhigan refugee' have been done. That's not to say that a new RPer shouldn't pursue their character being something like that if they're well-read on the lore and passionate about it. But I've always advocated that newer arrivals to the RP community first get a sense for what's already out there before diving into anything ("first your ear, then your tongue"). Even something simple as a RPC post asking, "Hey, has such-and-such a concept been done before?" or to gauge how receptive other RPers might be to something is never a bad idea. As has been said already, in the end each RPer should play their character(s) in a way that brings them enjoyment, but this should also be balanced with some awareness at least - if not respect - for how other RPers (who are also seeking enjoyment for themselves) will perceive that character. Unless something is WAY outlandish, I'm pretty happy to RP with just about anyone. I do have my preferences, and OOCly there are some character or story elements I have found distasteful for one reason or another. But unless expressly solicited, I usually don't make it a point to rain on anyone's parade. And I think that's probably more important than anything else. Where there is mutual respect and tolerance for different styles of RP, there is room for a lot of enjoyment. EDIT: As a footnote, the issue with bandwagon-type RP has less to do with the lore of the game than it has to do with the community. While having a solid understanding of the world you'll be RPing in is important, it's really only half of the equation. Often that lore can be twisted or interpreted in different ways anyway. With regard to RP, it may be prudent to keep one finger on the pulse of the RP community with which you will be interacting (whether via the RPC or the linkshell/company/group you're considering joining). I think this is so often overlooked and then RPers sometimes are left confused or wondering why ideas that seemed so great to them fall short of their expectations - often because a dozen other characters have similar stories.
  25. Cool example! I think the point here would be to create a challenging/unusual scheme and somehow make a weird color combination work together. Gerik is making the rules up for this one so I don't know if we're limited to hard brushes and minimal use of smudge/opacity and other such tools or what. But if we're creating color schemes upfront here's one I whipped up that may serve to help exemplify what I think we're talking about: https://kuler.adobe.com/#themeID/2198770 A few questions I should have asked in the chat: 1. Are we drawing our characters here, each others' characters, or anything we want? FF theme? 2. If we're sticking to characters, should they be matched up to the scheme, or do we want to randomize everything? That is, artist A would draw/paint artist B's character using artist C's color scheme. 3. Can we not start this until after the Secret Santa thing is done? Maybe just assemble some color schemes for awhile first? I get overwhelmed easily. Hehe. Feel free to edit any of these answers into your OP Gerik. I think this will be fun.
