Oscare

So all we know those moments when you get a really sick (5.1k Sidewinder <3) nasty crticals in boss battles. They make you feel cool and strong, especially when they break off like 5% of HP off of a trash mob. Those moments are cool. But what roleplay? You don't see big bold numbers in the game naturally when you emote an epic sword stab, or land a shot right between the eyes... unless we create them with our minds and words. What's one moment where you think your character is in tip top shape, never could be better, and could take on the world and in just one single emote, they're suddenly faced with life or death? In just one emote, a day filled with rainbows and sunshine would soon change your entire world? It could be emotional, such as your long time lover comes home and says "I'm sorry, I don't love you anymore." as the first thing they say. Or mental, such as losing your whole life's memories? Or maybe those really light hearted critical hits, such as comic relief. Your character said something so dumb, their friend just turns around slaps your thought process out of the atmosphere! (Sound familiar, Agents? Or should I say 'Weenie Squad'?) Or they embarrassingly trip in front og all their friends in the middle of the Quicksand? For me, one of these moments was when Franz literally /cleaved/ Oscare's chest wide open with a throwing axe in kust on emote! All for the sake of getting him to talk?! Rude I say!

"Why." Oscare just stares blankly at the Bronco Ranger poster. "I hope he at least had a high ransom in return for this. Or else I'm going to make fun of him for life," Oscare steals the poster off wooden bulletin board and stomps away, stashing it in the seemingly Never-Ending Belt.

Oscare merely deadpans. "A-Aeron...?" He bits down on his lip. The midlander being up on the board with the rest of the Bronco ads came as a huge shock. Instinctively -- yes -- INSTINCTIVELY, snatched a poster and neatly folds it, stashing it into his belt with the rest of his posters. "I'm totally giving him hell for this o---" Oscare looked sliiiiiiiiiiiiiiightly up from that ad to find...

You all work such cool jobs. I'm so jealous. I'll kindly escort my talentless butt out. As for myself, I'm a jobless high school senior student. I can at least share my plans; I'm planning on studying environmental science at Oregon State University, my goal is to be a conservationalist, working on forestry, fishieries, parks, and other natural areas!

I confess I run away from opportunities to roleplay, interact, and talk to others much more than I'm willing to let on.

There's a fine line between constantly cheesing it with "X does Y action easily!" and actual effort. If you make the attempt, and at least try, I feel like there deserves to at least be credit on the OOC level. Sure the occasional "X explains Y in a relatively simplistic manner" works once if what you're trying to do is so obscenely difficult to comprehend that even masters at the subject can't even explain it, sure. But if you're doing that every time, it just loses touch and it's quite frankly not exciting or stimulating for anyone involved. Effort -- even if you're wrong -- gets you a long way! It's a fantasy game too on top of that, so there's always the "Even if it's wrong, let's pretend it works anyway!" I also want to add: Of course, you can claim whatever you want about your character, but ICly characters will react however they wish to. So even if your character is smart, characters are still free to behave as if your character is too dumb to even breathe. But that's personalities and attitudes taking into effect, which is the core of roleplay anyway. Just wanted to draw the line of you can accept that OOC your character is smart, but that doesn't necessarily mean ICly characters have to believe it.

That sounds a little unfair though. Just because you don't know how to write something doesn't mean you're not welcome to try. A "slower" player should be allowed to play whatever they so choose to want to play instead of only sticking to concepts they know they can write without ease. As much as I love playing oblivious, silly, ridiculous characters, sometimes I want to break my own mold and go with something that is "claimed" to be "smart", even if I can actually write it worth beans. It's a learning process in my eyes.

Full admission that I am a very dumb person behind the character. It's actually a problem I struggle with a lot, really. I have Oscare who's intelligence is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay over my league by at least nine or eleven leagues in both expertise and practical knowledge in every sense, and I can't keep up. I can only do some much with my lower-than-basic attention to detail and comprehension, which makes Oscare have to be dumbed down to basically a child. It's not intentional, it's just a transfer of my own low OOC intelligence that Oscare can't make up for regardless of how "smart" I make him be. Because even if HE gets it (which is the intended effect 99% of the time), if I don't get it, then he won't because I'm the one typing the words. It actually bites me back in a lot of cases, unfortunately, and contributes a lot to my unwillingness to take active participation in spoken discussion. So like Chachan said above, I can only hope to a decent enough job because Oscare is way over my own intelligence. EDIT: Forgot to actually include my opinion. Short answer is yes, it can be done. It just requires a degree of finesse in writing. If you sound confident in what you say, players may be willing to wiggle around it!

Oscare walks on by the usual wooden post of media, wondering whatever was up no -- wait. After some shuffling under old newpaper clippings, the corner of a darkly colored poster caught his attention. And of course, there's another recognizable blonde. This time it was at least someone he expected to be up there. "Miss Cliodhna Eoghan, yeah?" He rips off the poster, examining it from all angles. "Definitely less surprising than Edda. But I wonder where the heck these gals take their photos from." He mused aloud before reading the clearly bold print disclaimer at the bottom. "Oh," a disappointed tone rolled off his tongue. He folds the poster and stashes it in his belt satchel with the others he so weirdly kept on him. There was something seriously wrong with this guy. He trots on away as if there was nothing wrong at all.

Oscare would definitely be the quiet kid in the class. He doesn't talk unless he's responding to someone else, and doesn't make an active effort to volunteer. Not because he's shy or anything, but just because he's reserved. He'd be very smart kid though, easily someone who could graduate top ten in the class. Unfortunately he would just barely get there because of his low attention span. Spending extended periods of time reading off books or doing the same kind of work for hours and hours, or even days upon days, starts to bore him and he eventually finds other things to do. I could also imagine him being a very helpful student, helping and tutoring classmates if they were stuck on a problem or if they had a hard time understanding the text in English class. Heck, he'd even break out of his shell to do it on the board for the sake of one student. Oscare's favorite subjects would be things like science, where there's always something new to discover and learn, and its abstract. Photography would probably be his all time favorite subject though. He like capturing the moments, or spreading the beauty of nature or of other people. Yearbook is where'd he be most of the time, and maybe even move up to major in journalism or other photographic careers in college. The nature has always interested him too, so he'd probably be invested in things like wild life prevention, fisheries, parks, etc. Music and learning other languages interest him too. Oscare would hate English class. Too much reading. Art is boring. Feels neutral about mathematics -- it's not too bad. Sports and athleticism/gym is too easy and boring, he works out on a daily basis, not many match up to him. He's always picked first, which he always thought is lame and a little mean. History is boring too. Heck, most social sciences are boring according to him. Technology can be cool. Keyword is can.
