As far as I know - and from lurking around in the official forums for a good while - there isn't really any big, official word on the conventions yet, except that the middle names (van, tol, sas and what have you) all refer to an individual's rank within the military and possibly political hierarchy. If you look at what we got so far name-wise, it should be perfectly fine to go with latin names - or, well, vaguely latin sounding ones. With some exceptions, that's still the general theme. And there are, indeed, all manner of non-hyur in the military, these would be conscripts from conquered countries instead of native Garleans. Now, Rhitatyn sas Arvina's an interesting example having a Roe first name and a surname that might just be of garlean origin? So it might be that people would take on another name as a sign of national pride or what have you. I know it's not much, but I hope this'll help a bit

The Vent Tent - Poor PuGs and Other Terrible Tales
Mithril Specs replied to Gegenji's topic in FFXIV Discussion
Two words: server lag...or whatever it is that causes everyone to just flash step around and every AOE to hit me in the face, no matter how far out of the red I am. And today did start so well with a quick roulette run of CM - no lag no nothing, so it beats me where the lag spike came from so suddenly. Really, the last boss in Dzemael is just impossible when the latency goes down the drain...and getting snide remarks even after explaining my situation didn't help matters either. Just abandoned ship after the tank pulled a rage quit on the rest of us, wasn't worth any more time and frustration But props to the WHM for being a peach and swiftcast-raising my sorry ass every time. -
How did your character learn to read/write?
Mithril Specs replied to Seriphyn's topic in Character Workshop
Far as Badr goes, she's only really started to catch up on this once she formally started to study arcanima. It was mostly the Lalafell mentoring her who would often sit down with her to learn it all by heart. Much as I can imagine that even tribal keepers would need some kind of notation system to keep stock of things...and what have you, books would've been nothing but squiggles on paper to her younger self. And Agrippa...probably the kind of education one gets in Garlemand - at least it would seem plausible that literacy is a lot more widespread. Probably doesn't hurt either that her family's rather well-off due to her mother's position in the military. Much as she is billingual, Agrippa still prefers to just write Eorzean rather than having to speak it, I just like to imagine that accents might be a thing. -
Ehehehe, well Logan's traitor scum from a nationalist's perspective, but still very much a purebred Garlean. One that's pretty fed up with her country's methods, much as she still shares their views on the Twelve and the primals.

...So starfish kinda stopped being adorable to me after this? Holy moley.

Well...I got two characters that would be perceived as villains by folks that have a very black-and-white mindset? There's the thing about Logan/Agrippa being a pureblooded Garlean and former centurio - well and it goes without saying that this goes hand in hand with killing a large number of Eorzeans in battle. No doubt, there'd be a good lot of people that would see this as unforgivable and in need of punishment, change of heart or no. Hell, it seems like most Eorzeans tend to see them as a kind of evil hivemind and would see any Garlean among them as a lying spy. Then there's a new concept for a character I've been mulling over because I'm a shameless altoholic. You see, it always kinda irked me how the whole "POACHING!!!!" thing is being treated in Gridania, so I really wanted to write a Keeper who's part of some hidden, self-sustaining community of hunters and such. Who actually are mindful of the whole elementals thing, while just wanting to live out their traditions without being, well, nannied all the time. It's just been something that crossed my mind, but I'd think something like that would have some pretty great potential for conflict? All things considered, this conjurer I've been working on might just be dismissed as some kind of witch doctor. Well and all the rep that comes with casting large rocks at wailers. And healing wounded poachers, so that'd be a big list of no-no from a lawful good POV. ...Okay, this is more self-identified moral greyness than anything, isn't it? :surprise:

Wow, this is so much more info than I was hoping for, it's awesome. And it sure helped to clear up a lotta stuff that I wasn't completely sure about before, so really, thanks a whole lot for this. This is definitely gonna help with the whole backstory and character building thing~

So here's a long overdue hello to everyone.

Pffft, no worries, you don't see me running for the hills here . If anything, I really enjoy the atmosphere over here so far. Makes it easy to jump in and get involved. -
So, while doing a bit of research for my deserter character, I've noticed that really in-depth info about Garlemand and its natives just seems really hard to come by? By now, I'd think I got a pretty good grasp on Logan and most things concerning her, but that did involve a good lot of gap-filling by just going "well, what would the old Romans have done?", but obviously, I don't wanna mess up, in case I did miss some vital information. Like, what does a native Garlean's third eye even do, outside of, well, being an extra peeper? In that one cutscene it did seem like it made Cid notice the whole...Echo hijinks going on, but that was a bit confusing, so I may be wrong? And that "one kill per day (or else)" rule: does it refer to killing people in particular, or could a soldier just skewer any random critter and be off the hook? Really, I'd be more than grateful for any bits of lore , it'd really help me with working out some rough edges on the backstory front.

The Screenshot Thread [Tag Your Spoilers]
Mithril Specs replied to Zyrusticae's topic in FFXIV Discussion
I just really liked the lighting there. Well and I may just have been very very happy to finally figure out how to take nice, UI-less screenshots on the PS4. ...And lowbie alt hijinks. Barely stepped in here and I'm already at it, I know. But ah, the old inspo bug. And I should've noticed earlier that manqo'tes look pretty neat. -
Ohoho, but the often stated hate for all things Garlean is what makes me feel justified in making my deserter be paranoid to the max~ Ah, seriously though, it's such an easy pitfall to just tumble into, I don't wanna count the times I put something like "rude people" in a dislikes section, as obvious as that should be. Hmm, I think it does make some sense to point it out, if a character has a particularly seething hatred for "bad thing x" and if said dislike defines them, but outside of that, this sure is a good thing to remind myself of as I edit those wiki profiles. PS: Shouldn't Nickelback be kind of a no-brainer, too?

So here's a long overdue hello to everyone.
Mithril Specs replied to Mithril Specs's topic in Welcome Desk
Thanks for the warm welcome, guys, I really appreciate it. Definitely looking forward to get started for real this weekend - makes timezones less of an issue if I can pull all-nighters without any guilt...or getting up at 7 like a zombie. Ah, I'm probably gonna run around as my secondary a lot, mostly because I'm having one of those moments where you start to question which one of your characters is the most fun to write. First world RPer problems, ahahaha. -
Does your character have any unfair Bias or Discrimination?
Mithril Specs replied to Kage's topic in Character Workshop
Badr's generally pretty good at not letting her biases show too much, but at times she can have a pretty curt attitude towards Gridanians and refuses to stay within the actual city any longer than she needs to. The origin of it all mostly boils down to her family being a small, self-sustaining group of hunters and tanners that refused to give up on their traditions - one can imagine how well that went. Besides that, she can be outright unfair and callous towards people that she perceives to be ignorant and can have trouble accepting that not everyone has had as much access to all kinds of knowledge as she did - well and that people make honest mistakes without any malice. As far as Logan goes, she has a hard time understanding highly pious people. As much as she dislikes the brutality her countrymen commit to spread their ideals - which, among other reasons made her desert in the end - she was still born and raised Garlean. Which makes it hard for her to trust any beastmen, even if she's aware that not all are primal-worshipping warmongers. Old habits die hard. And anyone who dislikes garlic cannot be trusted. Naw man, that's some serious business. -
Would you take an anime-esque character seriously?
Mithril Specs replied to Lyriell's topic in RP Discussion
No, it still seems like quite a false equivalency to me, because an MMO and a bloggin platform just are two very different platforms , for starters. Over there, you pretty much got a blank canvas where everything goes and where "canons" are sometimes needed in a group setting, while here it's pretty much all OCs, so taking a character from a show is going to cause some intense headscratching. You're right in that AUs are a popular thing on Tumblr, but thus far I've seen the whole thing being implemented in a different fashion than is suggested here. You got your coffee shop AUs, or , yeah "what if" instances of how a character might be in another setting, but the thing I've yet to see a kind of "fandom shift" who would actively seek out another community. To elaborate: that'd be if someone would take ol' Ash from pokémon, do a, hell, Attack on Titan imagining of the character with the same name and then do the extra mile of interacting with said tumblr community. Now there's something I haven't seen before, well if someone did that, there'd be the same amount of headscratching going on, despite the canon bias. I really don't want to end up being inflammatory here, but I want to say that just because something is seen as a bad idea and discussed honestly doesn't mean that there's some unfair stigmatisation going on.
