It's down for me (Florida). I was watching the Super Bowl, so I haven't tried until just now.

I never thought I'd feel so bad about getting a Det IV materia. I just now caught up on the story.

I created a character over the holidays because I was bored. I really had fun with her. Now that classes have started again, I have no time to RP =(

I meant more the whole physically drawing out the number line thing. But yes, even I do the "subtract multiples of 10/100/1x to get closer to the answer" thing in my head a lot. Well that's just so you have something to grade =P. You're effectively mentally drawing out a number line though. It's much handier than the "old school" subtraction algorithm, which is far less convenient and far more prone to error if you can't actually write it down. As adults, with simple calculators costing about 14 cents (which are only necessary if you don't have any kind of electronic device), pencil-and-paper methods of doing arithmetic problems are kind of pointless, imo.

As a 27-year-old aerospace engineering student, many of the Common Core math methods are exactly how I do mental arithmetic. I find they are excellent methods of computing sums, products, etc, when you don't have a calculator/computer/pencil and paper in front of you.

My character will be a Hellsguard. I assumed, like every other major city, it had a minor population of the other races. Edit: I actually prefer the "common" backstory. Farmer, refugee, etc. Makes rising to some amount of notoriety or glory that much more exciting.

I can second this. I had to look it up for my own background as well. How common is the Ala Mhigan refugee backstory? It seems a lot more common that I initially expected.

I suspected as much for the units of length and weight. And it's tonze, I've died enough to that damn ability in AV/that one FATE to have it seared into my memory. It's interesting that they use imperial units as the basis in a game developed in Japan.

Hi! I'm just trying to clear some stuff up prior to finalizing my character's history. My research shows the invasion of Ala Mhigo occured 22 years prior to 'now'. Can anyone confirm this? How quickly do Roegadyns physically mature relative to Hyur? (I guess I'm also assuming that Hyur are identical to humans physically...) Is there a handy list of all the common terms used in game that replace ones used on Earth? For example, units of measure (malms, bells, etc). ... Well I felt like I had a million questions, but once I try to put thoughts to words, I can only remember three of course. Still, answers to these will be really helpful!

I had a little trouble actually. I'm doing an internship right now, and the place I'm living has... undesirable internet, and I'm playing on a tiny TV. I had to blow up the chatbox to pretty much half the screen just to keep up. =P

Hi! I've played FFXIV for a while now without RP on Excalibur, but I just made an RP toon on Balmung for kicks. I'm not super experienced at RP, a year or so of it on WoW and tabletops here and there, but I like to think I'm pretty alright at it. I tend to come up with a real basic character history to start off with and kinda fill in the details as I go, but that didn't serve very well tonight when I got sucked into a scene on day one. I just logged in to get a few levels and pieces of armor, that's it. Must say I'm impressed with the RP in the Quicksand at least. Anyways, here I am. I'll try to work on a character sheet tomorrow at workin my free time. Until we meet in game.
