I've been seeing this essay go around on all of my other RP talks and around my tumblr, so I was wondering - how does the community see the term? Do you think it's sexist, no, or is there another opinion you have? Here's the essay. Personally, I do not see the term as sexist, but I plan to write my own response later. What do you guys think?

Plan to add my own response here but.. I feel this is relevant.

Cercil would probably be a cross of French and English. Chesparaux, as an origin OC, was solely named Chespar. He's a Slavic/eastern European cross of Russian-German-Dutch. You can just try imagining the accent. It's great. Esyltt (To-be Au Ra) would probably be Slavic as well, but I'm not quite sure what exact nationality she'd be. Arienette would probablyyyyy be Romanian. (As an origin OC, she technically has none due to her species)

More angst in the middle of the night, fun fun. Until I can properly get back on playing fully, I've been scrolling around and was wondering about something. The stages of grief. Grief is a horrible thing to deal with, all of us have dealt with it, when we think it's gone - it comes back to haunt us. It's honestly traumatizing, and sometimes, we never fully reach the luxury of having a complete catharsis. Even when we do, we cannot help but reminiscence about our times before our loss. Or fall back into depression from those memories. So, my question is. How does your character(s) deal with grief? How do they show it? Do they repress it, maybe show it through tears or rage? And, are they still recovering from a loss they...never really got over? What made/makes them grieve? What has your character mourning from a loss?

It honestly depends on what your idea of what a better story could or would look like. No one like fridging a character, especially one that's liked, but sometimes - sacrifices do, and can be made for the sake of progression. I feel like characters can sometimes be used as plot devices for progression, usually from all of their actions but hey, even death can work. I know I have done it a few times for my own stories, but it really depends on what kind of story I'm aiming for, and trying to then look for a way to make that version of the story better.

I started around 2006 on Facebook, with a bunch of mary sues and bad OCs and it was amazing. Then I went towards a bunch of those gaia-ish sites like Soliaonline and whatnot. After a while, there was a pause - then I began on tumblr, and now... I'm here.

I hope no one kills my reputation for posting this, and that I'm not too late with the actual announcements of it but... What color is the dress? http://www.wired.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Untitled-12.jpg[/img]

And apparently multiply like rabbits. Well, they are like potatoes. So they do need to grow pretty quickly.

Personally, I'm a full fledged lady in real life who prefers female characters, but I do at times play male characters. I think it just has to do with me preferring to play a gender I know more about. Though, I don't think it truly matters - gender that is. Sure, at some point, racial aspects and lore, even sexuality and gender have at it. But in reality, I just write for a character and then place all those parts into their character, when I believe one is more fit than the other. I always find that I seem to be in a room filled with female RPers, and it's been so long that I always have my jaw drop when I see an actual male one... It's been too long for me, hasn't it.

This has probably been discussed before, (and if it has, please direct me there). Was searching around and the archived forum of this didn't really hold much. I was wondering about this as Chesparaux is a bit on the aged side, but he's an Elezen and I notice in most fantasy works, Elves/Elven races tend to live for quite a bit, and age pretty well. But I've been reading around the wikis and there doesn't seem to be any official mention of age. If there isn't any official age, could there be any theories or idea the RP community could guess on? I want to say Hyur's age pretty normally as humans (even longer with technology). But I'm unsure about the other races.

I'm on Skype constantly, and I'm wondering if there are any RP groups for FFXIV on Skype allowing new members and such. Or if there are any for the current Linkshells and FCs accepting newbies! (Or even oldies, however old you are, crusty.) Maybe this could also turn into a topic to exchange Skypes for Skype RP in case the game breaks, or the idea is more appealing! Whatever catches your fancy. But until I can renew my sub and squander around by reading lore and slowly developing my wikis/characters (By walkthroughs and such), I still want to come back to the forums/community and check if there's a leeway for finding groups out of the game.

I always play a bit of both, on extreme scales as well. Or in multiple shades of grey, depending on the lore. I think this is less about just "Overpowered or Underpowered" more than it is how these kinds of characters are written. (Sadly, in FFXIV terms, my sub ran out and school has choked up my time from playing, but I still do lurk here quite a bit). Overpowered characters are subjective depending on where you place them and how they are crafted. But I feel many RPers, when they see Overpowered, they think some perfect warrior type who knows everything - which, by the way, is what the definition mostly pertains too. But then that brings it's own problems, because just being Overpowered doesn't make a character bad in any way if it's done correctly. And I notice many RPers never take the personalities of characters into consideration, as there could be a lot more than simply their abilities. Sadly, after years of experience, we're kind of hardwired to see it that way. All of us have both cringeworthy and hilarious horror stories about it. However, I agree with Gaspard's points and Graeham's, the reason why we tend to see Overpowered characters in a bad light is because all of the perks are reaped, but never the negatives. Many of the strongest characters, by the stereotype, are not afflicted by anything they do, let alone in a world like FFXIV's. And some of the Overpowered types are played a bit unrealistically, i.e Overpowered character hanging out in a place that isn't suiting for their rank/ability rank. However, Underpowered characters can also be just as bland, because there isn't anything interesting with a clean slate that is talentless or unlikable. Just as there is none with a character who cannot be stopped. But I believe that with the right kind of quality of writing, either of these types of characters can be pulled off, and that's why I play both. Both tropes of Overpowered and Underpowered characters, given the right settings and personality, can be greatly compelling and even enjoyable. Know the lore, and think of how to play your character, Overpowered or Underpowered. Overpowered characters are great, especially if they're done right because if you have ever been with an Overpowered character, or played one (at least in my experience), there's a lot more to focus on than just their abilities. Even the greatest beings have faults. Underpowered characters are also compelling to watch. It's kind of like cheering on the underdog. They grow on you. Overall, in my opinion - I love and play both types of characters when there is more to focus on than just how many abilities they have, or how talentless they are. I want to make both types for FFXIV, when I know how to do so correctly. And just as a last note, in case no one has mentioned it. A character cannot be Overpowered if all of the forces around that character are just as equally powerful, so that it evens out. Same whole deal with the Mary/Gary sue thing. And vice versa for Underpowered characters. TL;DR: Both types of characters are great in my opinion, but they have to be written with skill and not just focus on all of the positives or negatives. A.K.A character balancing. I RP both kinds of characters.
