Balmung currently open! Rolled all the alts I'll need for some time, I think. Good luck to anyone else trying to get in!
-
It really doesn't need to, though. SE can improve the system or their server infrastructure without making the waits absolutely intolerable. Mind you, Balmung is the largest server on the NA data center, so some waiting is inevitable, but.
-
They should honestly just add a queue for character creation, the same as logging in. Bam, problem solved.
-
Yeah, that's why I've already rolled an Au Ra nameholder and I'm just gonna fantasia them. Save myself the headache.

I've had this conversation so many times before in so many MMOs I'm not even angry at the inevitable responses. That picture I posted? I made it in MSpaint 15 years ago when I was playing Everquest. It always goes the same way: I plead for RPers to have a place of their own, I'm accused of being an elitist and having a bad attitude, I say "You'll see, RP will disappear and I'll say I told you so", RPers continue to welcome their own destroyers with a smile, non-RPers vastly out number RPers, RP is relegated to specific guilds, there's nobody around for me to say "I told you so". Rinse and repeat The disturbing thing here is this topics existance is essentially agreeing with me. People want on on Balmung sooooo bad and most RPers here are already on Balmung. Why? Gilgamesh's RP scene is identical to Balmung and it's much easier to get on right? It's not like the difficulty in getting a spot on the server somehow filters out people that aren't dedicated right? It's rather weird that you're expending so much effort to get what you insist is the same result. It's not the same and you darn well know it. EDIT: Oh and QueenFrejyalen, I said nothing of RP quality. Your "slippery slope" is one of your own creation. ONC52indu4Q

I can see why you don't mind them, considering they don't really affect you as you've filled up all eight of your slots, but would you feel the same if you were trying to bring friends that're new to the game onto the server? I get what you are saying, but I'd be even more pissed with laggy unplayable servers. Now sure, they could deff. ease up a bit on the restrictions, but by no way remove them. And don't be fooled, I've waited my fair share of late nights / early mornings to get in:) Fair enough! I think part of the issue is that waiting doesn't really do it, anymore. Nowadays you have to wait for maintenance to get in, because the mornings just don't open up, probably partially due to the fact that a lot of people just stay logged in overnight. Maintenance isn't a regular thing, either, like it is in some MMOs. I've seen some people get fed up and just pay the eighteen bucks to transfer, which is, imo, ridiculous and supporting a bad policy.

Honestly, I was shocked that they don't use WoW's system. When a large server is locked, rather than going to your character select screen and logging in, you wait at server select screen and you wait in line there. Then, once it's you're turn and you're into the server, you can log in or create as many characters as your heart desires. It's similar enough to FFXIV's system, wait in line for your turn, but people who want to make characters there can also wait in line. Seems a good system to me. Failing that, at least put the AFK timer back into the game.

Yes and no. Roleplay servers are official, but most aren't filled with roleplayers. Most are filled with players that happened to get stuck there because the game suggested it for them based on population/proximity to the server's location/timezone. Back in vanilla they sorta-kinda used to care about lore-abiding names in theory, but that was ten years and several expansions ago. Now you can have any ol' name you like as long as it's not an outright offensive word. Even on the large, popular roleplay servers like Moon Guard you have a sizeable population of non-RPers. There are some that come there because RPers are nice folks to be around and the ambiance of roleplay is pleasant, or because their friends play there, or perhaps they just get recommended by the game to play there. As to Vulture, I wasn't aware I was discussing role play with one of Gotham's finest super villains.

That's not a very healthy outlook to have on it. RPers having to crawl up a nigh-insurmountable wall is not going to help the server as a whole. I've had friends who wanted to use the trial to test the waters in RP on FFXIV, and haven't ended up getting the game because they were not able to get into Balmung for the entirety of it. You use Moon Guard as an example. Despite Goldshire being a hub of ERP and bad roleplay, Moon Guard has an active, thriving roleplay community while still being a massive server with a fair amount of non-roleplayers. A server being large does not diminish the roleplay community, and maintaining exclusivity is going to end up excluding just as many (if not more) future roleplayers as it does non-roleplayers. Fai's website is a good suggestion, though! Highly recommend that.

Gilgamesh and Balmung are never accepting new characters

Sadly, this is pretty true. Not sure when the next maintenance is, but if you're really desperate, you can try waiting up to see if it opens. Every so often it does open up at about 5am PST, but I can't say I'd recommend staying up that late to try it, because it happens very rarely. Mhm... And if it doesn't happen I can guarantee you'll be rather put out. I tried it for two days before I finally just dropped the money on the transfer because I couldn't keep on being disappointed like that. On the bright side, Gilgamesh is much easier to get into! So, you have an RP friendly server to level on til you feel like transferring to Balmung, if you so choose. Luckily, I got in during the last maintenance, though I'm keeping an eye out for upcoming ones as there's an alt I'd like to roll. Keep an eye out for emergency maintenance, too! -

There's plenty of diversity depending on where you go, so if your heart's set on miqo'te, don't worry about it at all. Miqo'te is the most popular race, and it is noticeable, but it's not at the point where anyone is gonna groan and go "ugh, another miqo'te" or anything. On the other hand, I don't think there are nearly enough elezen at all... Yeah, I've honestly seen far more Roegadyn than I have Elezen which honestly surprised me. I have one that I wish to RP, but he's low priority right now as if I add another character to my leveling rotation I'm going to go insane. Out of curiousity, what are the most popular races? I'd guess it goes uh, Miqo > Lala > Hyur > Roe > Elezen? I'd switch Lala and Hyur, as there is a pretty vocal subset of players who dislike Lala's on principle and would never play one. However that's just what I've noticed while playing on Balmung, I couldn't say if it's the same on other servers as I was too busy leveling on Gilgamesh to pay attention. It also depends entirely on gender in some cases. For example I can remember coming across more female Roe's than male. I have noticed quite a few Roe gals, yeah, though probably because the dudes are a bit on the goofy looking side. Lotta Miqo dudes, too. Finally got into the server and rolled a Hyur. Looking forward to seeing this for myself!

Still open! Get in while you can, people!
