  1. State of the gamePLAY, maybe. A lot of the people i know from 1.0 still think the 1.0 story was better than the 2.0/3.0 story, in most places. Some of the newer story is pretty good, though! Personally, I think so long as you don't play THE Warrior of Light, you're fine. You can even RP as the WoL if you're going to do it in a closed circle of role players, but if you do that publically, you will probably find a lot of people will snub their noses at you. I wouldn't personally... My character would probably just think you're the "biggest fibber," in her words. I'd still RP with you. lol
  2. No, no. That's the 2.0 story that you're comparing to the entirety of the lore. The lore in 1.0 actually encompassed the fact that there were a LOT of warriors of light, there wasn't just one. The story actually went into that. They all vanished during the calamity, and now we just have one super powered snowflake who can fight anything and come out unscathed. Nobody remembers the 1.0 warriors of light, the calamity caused people to forget about them. It was a cheap retcon, one of many.
  3. Well, you can still fight Primals as a random Joe-Shcmoe! The Flames, according to lore, have fought and defeated Ifrit numerous times, actually! They just throw large numbers at him, and take casualties. He can't just temper everything, and he has to consciously do that, so they're able to beat him with overwhelming force. You can also have the Echo, which makes you immune to tempering, anyways! The Echo is not reserved solely for the warrior of light. In fact, according to the lore, a LOT of people have it. Many of the pepople who both survived and witnessed the Battle of Silvertear Skies awoke with the echo, that's when it first started appearing. From then on, many others awoke with it, including every player character in the 1.0 storyline, since that story was less about a special snowflake super hero Warrior of Light, and instead about the Warriors of light, pluralized. They were abundant (and less strong than the current superhero WoL), but not anywhere near as abundant as people with the Echo. It's still RARE, but it's not locked out of player lore. You could have it, justifiably, and thus could fight primals without being tempered.
  4. In general, I try to stick pretty close to the established lore. I think my biggest diversion from that path is probably how i role play my characters' combat knowledge and potential. It is my own personal belief that the class system should not be held as the bible for what your character is capable of, for example. I don't role play a gladiator or a pugilist, but instead, incorporate small tidbits of classes that make sense for my character to know. One, for example, is a former huntress from a Xaela tribe. She can thus use a bow quite well, as that was her primary means of felling prey. This translated directly to the battlefield once she came of age to begin participating in the wars that her tribe was involved in. She didn't know any "special skills" with a bow, she merely knew how to use it as a weapon. She picked up hand-to-hand combat over time because there were situations when the enemy would get close enough for her to require a means to defend herself. From there, she was taught how to channel aether through her limbs so that she might be able to actually HURT a Xaela male in h2h combat... Because, well, she's little, and they're not. So, she learned what could sort of be compared to the "fists of 'Element'" type monk skills, just a much more crude version. She later used that knowledge of aether control to learn arcanima in Eorzea, but found that she kind of sucked at it. She can only summon carbuncles, and they are pretty unruly and not at all helpful, other than being cute. I like to think of the classes as an analog to real world skills, crafts and disciplines. An MMA fighter, for example, isn't usually just a student of Karate, Kickboxing, Taekwondo, Muay Thai, etc. They learn bits and pieces of all of these different fighting styles in order to be competitive in a fight. You do have boxers who only box, so these would be your people who are dedicated only to one class, but then you have the veterans of war and sport that realize that they need a more diverse platform to ensure they remain victorious in their feats. Personally, my taste in combat tends to lean more towards realism. I don't like it when Lalafells beat up Roegadyns in fist fights. Sure, that Lalafell could probably roast the Roegadyn's ass if he used magic, but fisticuffs? Gorillas can physically snap a human's neck with a single blow. Roegadyns are bigger masses of muscle than they are. I don't think you'll survive! For someone to beat a physically superior foe, I tend to feel they need some sort of explanation. If a Hyur squares off with a Roegadyn and the hyur wins, I'd expect that the Roegadyn is either extremely drunk, not a trained combatant (whereas the hyur is), or the Hyur manipulated aether in some way that gave him an edge the Roegadyn did not possess. However, the story has a couple instances of lalafells easily besting other trained fighters like it was nothing. Especially in 1.0.
  5. I think it can be quite easily explained as a musical interpretation of events that transpired. It happens all the time in the real world, after something major occurs. For example, you got all these songs popping up about starting revolutions when the revolution in Egypt occurred, and shortly thereafter when America was teetering on the brink of a possible revolution, as well. It got close enough that there were meetings with upper-level military officials to discuss what would happen if that did go down. Then, all these songs about it popped up. Think of it like that. The WoL defeats titan? The magitek nerds make a tribute to what they think slaying titan might sound like, from an artistic approach. Consider the songs as musical tales of exploits done by the WoL and other famous heroes. This has been a constant theme throughout the history of music. It's typically inspired by current events. And remember... This game is far more steampunk than it is fantasy. So, some of the music you may think is out of place cuz it doesn't suit a Tolkien world could very well exist.
  6. I already gave up on the concept and began to sell off the 40+ million worth of furniture i had made to give to people to decorate their rooms. There was no interest in membership, so i am just saving the gil to buy more houses when they are available, instead! The house is in the goblet, btw, to the one who asked.
  7. I am seeking input on what I believe to be a fresh new take on a role play Free Company. So basically, I own a medium house of my own. It is attached to a free company, which enables me to build rooms for my alts and store/train multiple chocobos, and all of that noise. I have been thinking about opening up the free company to outside people for a bit of time, now. The concept I have come up with might be of interest to some other role players, so i wanted to put the feelers out there to see if there is any real interest. Anyways, i'll get to the idea, now. Essentially, there is no Free Company, from an in-character standpoint. The house is the pivotal concept, in this instance. I am considering opening up my Free Company's doors to the public to allow people to construct private rooms that will serve as residences; apartments, if you will. The house itself serves as a communal area with a rather extravagant dining hall (bar included!), lounge and bath house. Basically, the three most important social areas in a place like Eorzea. I put many hours into designing the home, and I think it will impress even the most picky of tenants. There would only be one rule in terms of private room construction; you cannot include a dining area or bathing facilities. This is to encourage people to socialize with the other tenants and potential guests in the actual house. This may seem like an annoying restriction, but it actually frees up a LOT of space for you to utilize in designing your own private chambers, since you don't have to worry about squeezing in these two features. So, you are probably scratching your head by now, wondering why I would pitch a basic concept like an apartment complex with a strong emphasis on building a small community. Well, the strength of this idea comes in play when you realize what exactly an environment like this can offer you. First and perhaps most important, you are not bound by the rules and regulations of a Free Company. Are you a mercenary? Cool beans, you can rent a room. Are you a thief or pirate? Well, so long as you aren't advertising your life of crime freely, there is no real issue here! This basically forms a congregation of a vastly diverse group of people under one roof. You get to socialize with people who your character may not otherwise have any chance to bond with by simply being a neighbor. Now, if I find enough interest in this idea and recruit members, there WILL be central storylines that people can jump in on. Nobody will be excluded, events will be planned that are pretty open to most -- if not all -- character concepts. Aside from the obvious social parties and events, there is sure to be a lot of fun to be had. I was tossing around ideas for a murder mystery arc, if that's something people would be interested in, for example! Everybody is free to come up with their own events for the group, and of course, you will have easy access to a very wide range of character types. So, if you need help on a job, who better to ask than a neighbor? Just don't forget to bring back that measuring cup you borrowed! I should note that i would highly encourage anyone who was interested in this idea to also keep seeking out and maintaining contacts they have with other Free Companies. Just because you'd be an OOC member of my own company in order to house your apartment in the complex does not mean you are restricted from joining in on other people's events. I'm certain there are numerous FC's out there who would welcome you to join any and all of their events even without your membership. So, you will not be lacking in that regards! Your mercenary character can still be part of a band of unruly sellswords while living here. Maybe the company you're involved with will consider making a Linkshell for communications that you can still be a part of. Never hurts to ask!
  8. Again, I point out that our stories all take place in a sandbox that is completely war-torn. We're battling dragons, we're dealing with Garlean expansion and we have the primal threat constantly on the horizon. The entire continent was recently largely obliterated (just a few years ago) by the calamity. I'm pretty sure that MOST people living in a situation like this one would already be very used to death and losses. Sure, it'll hurt when you lose a friend. You'll surely have a natural mourning and grieving process (assuming normal mental health) of variable length and severity dependent upon how close the person was to you. However, this would probably be one of MANY losses your character has already experienced. Over time, after all of this, I'm pretty sure the majority of the population would be slightly desensitized to the idea of death, and would be much better at coping with such losses than you or me would be, in the real world. If you want to send your character into a deep spiral of grief, then more power to you... But it's probably not necessary at all, given the fact that the residents of Eorzea are used to seeing people die by the hundreds, and possibly thousands.
  9. We're playing in a world that is torn by wars on multiple fronts with extremely powerful enemies with the addition of several severe dangers. Dragons, primals, certain beastmen and Garleans are all very real threats to the safety of our characters. Put yourselves in the shoes of your character; now, is it not entirely unbelievable to assume every friend you make in the Quicksand is going to live to see tomorrow? Most people who RP on this game play a mercenary or some sort of character that readily puts themselves in harms way, so death isn't an if, but a when. I think anyone who tries to keep you from killing off your character through a guilt trip is really hindering your storytelling ability. Very few things are more powerful than the death of a character, especially a very loved one, in a story. I mean, look at any forum online for anything about Haurchefant pre-heavens ward. Nobody really cared enough about him to ever say anything worthwhile, yet after he died, people were in tears and paying tribute to him in silly ways. Death is a powerful narrative. A lot of times, people's deaths have a bigger impact on the world around them than their lives ever will. We're all adults, here. I think we can handle losing a friendship of a fictional character through their untimely demise. If not, then perhaps you should only associate with people who play characters who never go into battle or walk down any dark alleys. Any and all of my characters are open to death during role play. If you want to kill my character, they're going to fight back, though. We'll random it, and you will be the one dying if i win the fight. I won't accept a mortal bout if the street doesn't go both ways. Anyone willing to kill another character should always be willing to be slain, themselves.
  10. Quite literally anything I feel like hosting at the time. I know that's not a lot to go on, but anything from murder mysteries to people stumbling upon underground (dangerous and illegal) chocobo races (for Flynt K.)! There is going to be a huge variety to these events, and I plan to keep scripting new concepts if the idea takes off. I just want to attempt to break the habit that so many of the community has of either only rping in taverns/houses or when there is a scheduled server-wide event. This is one of the ways i came up with to try and fix this. I'm hoping other people will start doing it, too.
  11. Ah, I thought I was pretty clear that each and every event will be different. There isn't much information to share in regards to the individual events, since there is no real relation from one to the next. That's the entire purpose of it. It's a small to medium scale random role play encounter that will be held on unscheduled days and times.
  12. This post is meant to gauge interest in an idea of mine. Please post your feedback! I probably won't do these unless there is enough interest. Hello, citizens of Eorzea! I have a proposition of (what I expect to be) a new kind. I wish to bring excitement to the role play community, outside of your typical day-to-day tavern RP. I want to get people away from the Quicksand and their personal/company houses for a stint of fun in the sun! We are adventurers, for the most part, no? So why do our lives lend themselves so heavily to the mundane? Well, with a bit of randomness, I think we can break this seclusion and get things really going in this contested realm of ours! First of all, I should outline that this proposed idea hinges upon random happenings in the world, and how our characters might react to such! This means there will be no advanced notice to participants, or even posts upon these forums. When it's time for one of these role play catalysts to occur, you will probably see a shout in Ul'dah, or a party finder pop up with the details you need to join in on the fun! These events are meant to be spontaneous and mostly unscripted. I am probably going to GM them all by myself at the initial launch. Anyone who wishes to participate will be invited to a linkshell for all GM-related postings related to the actual happenings of the event. The linkshell will be disbanded at the conclusion of the event, and a new one will be made for each and every such impromptu gathering. I will be looking for people to help me with these events, but I am likely to try and host the first one by myself unless I get some really interested helpers! The objective of this new style of event is to accomplish three things; get people away from the mundane and increasingly familiar RP 'hotspots,' promote others to take it upon themselves to try and spur up random and exciting RP with others, and lastly, to hone my abilities as a writer! Thank you for taking the time to read through my proposal. I have just a few quick notes before I wrap up this post to see what the response of the community is; There will be a set number of participants in the first go around, so once this number is met, I will not be inviting more people to the LS. This is so that I do not overwhelm myself with having too many people for me to handle on my own. I will be looking to increase this when/if I have more interested parties in the administration of these events. When you are not posting something relevant to the actual story of the event, please keep it out of say or emote. This includes OOC chat and little inconsequential emotes to your friends. Example; "Joe Bob leans over to whisper sweet nothings to Bobi Joe." Just send Bobi Joe a tell. Use your own discretion and try to keep it organized! Nobody except myself and those who are helping me to set up these events will know when the next one will occur. We obviously will have a little bit of planning to do to get them ready for the masses, even if they're mostly unscripted. I do plan to host them on a variety of dates/times so that everybody has a chance to join in on some, no matter their timezone or schedule, though! The first event will probably be something simple. A violent fight of some sort is likely to ensue somewhere inside -- or near to -- Ul'dah. People will be alerted of this, and all sorts of characters can interact. Do you play a character who wants to instigate trouble? Try and turn the spectators into a mess of rioters! Are you involved in law enforcement? Do your best to bring offenders to justice before the theoretical shit hits the actual fan(s)! Where did that Opo-Opo even come from?!
