  1. Well I'm still learning the lore of this game myself, but I could be of some small assistance in helping you weed through those desires of yours. So what we have here is a character whose upbringing wasn't the greatest and lived a very bleak life, while looking to take herself and her only living family member and find a new home elsewhere. As a lancer and archer she could've found her origins from Ishgard or Gridania. Either location would require grit and no small amount of intelligence and skill to survive given their hostile environments. Ishgard is a cold bleak place so knowing how to survive is essential and the politics and cutthroat nature of Ishgard's nobility isn't something to mess with either on top of their zealous devotion to the goddess of war. Gridania is a more verdant location and looks more peaceful, but the darkness within the Shroud and the elementals make it very terrifying especially if you piss off the forest and get blighted or whatever and have every monster keyed in on you. It's definitely a more primordial location that's for certain and its denizens are very protective and adherent to the wishes of the forest and the elementals that call it home. Both locations have also been heavily involved in wars between Ala Mhigo and the Garlean Empire which could give rise to your character's interest in firearms to become a machinist (maybe even a gunbreaker if you wanted). Either way, she could've seen the effectiveness of the Garlean military and the creations of Cid in Ishgard and his sky lances and became intrigued with the idea of wielding such effective and decisive weaponry in place of a cumbersome bow and arrow. Blue magic study could come from an interest in learning about monsters and their abilities, seeingi their power could drive your character to want it for themselves so nobody would ever hurt her or her brother again. Paladin and Dark Knights are thematically the same save for some key details. Paladins are no longer strictly beholden to the Sultan of Uldah and there are now free paladins wandering the world looking for their home. They're also very much like Jedi in that they're protectors and stand firm in their dedication to their cause whatever that may be. Dark Knights are almost the same thing except that they are hunters and seekers of injustice and take a much more proactive role in protecting the good and innocent...by directly attacking the source of corruption or danger. This is why the Ishgard nobility and the Holy See had most of them routed because these guys are the ones that directly threaten them. Dark Knights also learn to tap into darkness (not necessarily the Void, but their darker emotions) to channel their magic. Greatswords are an attempt to merge swordsmanship with the reach of a lance if that helps as well. Whether you wish to go Paladin or Dark Knight is up to you, but it may be best to begin as a tutor or say she was squired to one to learn swordsmanship and their magic. If you wish to become a black mage, I'd warn you that apparently these mages tap directly into the Void and as such are seen as wielders of dark and terrible magic. As such you may be hunted or shunned by some players *shrugs*, but I can't be certain. Still, maybe you wish to feel more intune with the elementals so you seek to wield the awesome power of the elements yourself much in the same vein as the blue mage. Or you tapped into such magic to combat the dragons during the Dragonsong War. Dancer maybe you wanted to be employed by a troupe of performers that travel the land in order to support yourself and your brother, while maneuvering your way through the traps of civilization in order to etch out a place for the both of you. As for Duskwright or Wildwood.....Duskies have better than average hearing, while Wildwood can see a damn field mouse scampering through the grass leagues away. Pick your poison P. Wildwoods left Gelmorra though in order to find better lives on the surface and made a pact with the elementals. Duskwrights stuck to the shadows and shunned the surface world.
  2. Considering the loss of his family and the pain of captivity under slavers I don't think it's unreasonable that someone would seek to reinvent themselves. Heck in FF X1 Galka had their own naming convention, but were also given more "spiritual/regal" names by the humes like Silver Claw and what not.
  3. Appreciate ya folks. Hopefully my gf and I can find our happy little corner. It'll certainly be interesting learning hte lore of this game.
  4. I doubt anyone remembers me, it's been ages since I was around and the display of this website has changed quite a bit from the white-cream and blue colors it originally had. I am a roleplayer that came to FF14 at the behest of my friends who wanted to play the game with me. However when I came here my friends had lost all interest and their guild had collapsed, so they left the day after I arrived sadly. Since then I've on and off tried to find something to ground me in this game and immerse myself within its lore and what not, but I just couldn't find anything to do so. I also moved to Mateus from Balmung when the migrations were happening and helped a bit in setting up the rp community on the server, but unfortunately life called me away for some time. Basically I'm a ghost, but I'm a fancy one and I love telling stories all the same :P. My memories of my time in this game are almost a blur to me, but I do remember that I played an elezen and a roegadyn back in the day. The elezen was a wildwood from Gridania named Vanelleaux Feyrbrant, a wood wailer turned monster slayer (dragoon) that used to travel the land and take up assignments as they came. He was also involved in defending Ishguard from the dragon threat along hte outskirts and cleared the way for citizens to escape to safety. The roegadyn sadly I have no memory of :P. My return to the game will still be a ways off since I'm currently on assignment for my job, but I'll be ready sometime in the spring. In truth I'm returning because my girlfriend expressed interest in the game and I love playing video games with her. We're both roleplayers as well. In fact we joked about making a pair of viera twins for the fun of it all :P. Just a pair of goofy characters that just bumble around :P. I doubt they'd be our mains, but it's a fun thought. Also super glad to finally see an actual beastman race that isn't a human or elf with animal parts glued on (looking at you Hrothgar). Not sure who I'd play really upon my return whether I'll still continue to focus on Vanelleaux or move on to another character, but I do enjoy the ol' elf-beanpole :P. I've missed a lot it seems since those days. People laughed at me when I predicted they'd bring in a class that wields a gunblade and look at me now, so I might jump on that, or go back to my FF XI roots and play a paladin :P. I've been rping for years upon years now and I've been in such universes such as FF XI, SWG, Aion, DCUO, SWTOR, WoW and GW1 and GW2. It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance.
  5. Dang I just arrived and already Im being given a lifeboat to flee on . From what I see of the polls it very well seems like Mateus is going to be the next best place to be. Maybe I should transfer there, myself, and make a go of it. Established rp populations can be a pain to get into at times. And who knows - I may not be able to lead a guild given my time and military lifestyle, but I could at the very greet people and see about doing some kind of event now and then .
  6. Howdy folks. I was a player, very briefly, in FF14 back when my friends were trying to convince me to get the game, but unfortunately their guild/Linkshell/whatever fell apart and they left just as I got in. So yeah... Figured I'd come back and see how things were going on with the expansion on your horizon. Also to figure out if I should return. Sadly the main reason I went to 14 was because I knew peeps that I could hang with and learn about the game from. I actually managed to get on the Balmung server back then and after checking the mogstation my characters are indeed still on that world. As for my characters I've gone one of each (except lallafell and au ra), but back then I was looking to make my elezen my main and rp him as a lancer (eventual dragoon/dark knight), born to a Gridanian soldier and a Alah Mhigo refugee that met during the Autumn War and raised him to be a warrior, himself, who'd eventually join the Woodwailers for a bit and just rp him as a wandering warrior and a beast slayer, augmenting his abilities with his learned ability to utilize Aether and his acrobatics with a bit more into his story than that, but I won't give stuff away . I actually used to play FFXI back in the day and played a hume warrior that eventually became a paladin and I had a great deal of fun with the mates I made there. Sadly though all things have to come to an end and I left that game when it all dried up with my group and left that story saying that they became corsairs and set sail to explore the world. So whatcha think? Anyone out there willing to sit down and help a guy out? Frankly the whole thing of getting set up in FFXIV is a bit vertigo-enducing from what I hear and my choice of classes seems like a bad idea from what I've heard about Dragoons being useless.
  7. Same issue - Error 401 and none of the methods work for me either
  8. And I'm here folks. I think I'll main my Roegadyn and Elezen. Also why isn't the World Transfer or any of the other services working for me? I get Error 401 every time I try to enter my card info.
  9. Your story is very common sadly. I've heard almost that same story more times than I can count and it's a sad state of affairs. But funny thing about WoW is there's a way that you can tell if a player is truly rping a dragon. They tell you they are. Seriously a bunch of rpers there will scream to the heavens that they are a dragon in disguise and all this other stuff. It's kinda funny even if I wonder if they did their research on the material . But Im generally a good sport if it's done well or in an interesting way. I love dragons myself and the idea of being somewhat connected to them. It's why I thought the dragoon class in FF 11 was awesome because of their little dragon/wyvern pet. I'd love to play as a race or a class that also carries the dragon concept further than that though like the Drakkin race from EQ2, or a class that sort of has you drink dragon blood or partner with a dragon for power. Maybe one day. But back to the topic of WoW - it's not worth 15 bucks an hour sadly. I really am trying to think of something positive to say about Wow that I haven't stated already, but all I can think is Goldshire *shudders*. Buuuut WoW did give me this and Im happy about this. EDIT: OOO! Another positive - their beast races actually leaned more toward the beast than humanoid which I really liked and felt was a breath of fresh air. It's also why I love the charr in GW2. Mount? I AM MY OWN MOUNT! *gets on all fours and runs* 1waVSu4adDM
  10. When SWG died and I faded away from TOR after a year or so, I did try WoW for a little while. I played a basic warrior to see how it all felt to me and I was a worgen. The game missed a lot of points with me on a personal level in its character creation as everyone is literally just a bulging rage freak with the proportions of a damn fridge. In fact everyone is disproportionate! The story and lore behind the series is interesting at some points, but the greatest strength of WoW is also its greatest weakness - I feel. Everyone knows about it and everyone plays it and every server is flooded. It's like plunging head first into a deep snack bowl of trail mix at a low end bar. The community, at least on Moonguard and maybe Wyrmrest Accord, isn't the greatest and more often than not I just want to back as far away from it as I possibly can. I did like the mounts though, but I hated that we couldn't cusotmize them or that we couldn't diversify at all if we wanted high end mounts ie have the stats of one mount and the skin of another, choose sadles and all that other stuff. Seriously with some of the races those mounts are like choosing a second extension of yourself. The world certainly feels big and it does gradually evolve, but yeah. It's not gonna save it for me. Aerial mounts/combat are a cool idea. As far as races go I'd say my favorites are - Tauren, Worgen, Orcs and Forsaken in that general order. And I loved that we could actually sit on couches, chairs and all that. Seriously why have MMORPG's moved away from dynamic environments like that? My stay in that game was very brief, but I did enjoy it for what it was worth. Don't think I'd go back though - community is important and the char creator is pretty abysmal for WoW.
  11. You can be all three! Really? YAAAAAY!!!! *happy dance*
  12. I'll be playing a straight, male elezen (60% chance it'll be a wildwood) when I get there. Got a name and everything picked out. Just trying to figure out Dragoon, or Paladin...or Dark Knight. *shrugs* Really is a tough decision.
  13. I'm actually leaning to be a wildwood elezen . I enjoy the forest-people dynamic and the Ishgardians are really, really pale. Plus there's the whole Autumn War and Ala Mhigo potential (probably misspelled that. Plus I don't see why the Ishgardians wouldn't allow a wildwood to become a dragoon if it meant another protector to their ranks. I won't spoil much if any . I never did like posting too much of any character of mine and prefer to let people find stuff out through interaction and maybe through a profile/journal. Which is hard because I also like to talk about character development and all that .
  14. Do I approve? If you mean do I approve of the community - I really can't say. I've just started looking around, but it seems alright. No community is ever perfect and in order to feel apart of it you have to find your place within it. Perhaps I should try to restate myself. Are there any organized groups of dragoons/paladins/dark knights and what's the status of these jobs within Eorzea and the community? I've read up on the lore of what I could find. Dragoons are knights that are trained in Ishguard to defend against the dragons/Dravonian Horde by mastering aerial/acrobatic combat with their lance and harnessing the power of the dragons themselves. The most powerful dragoon of all is the Azure Dragoon whose chosen by the eye of Nidhog. Also dragon's blood is apparently also a way to acquire the power of the dragons, but it's highly addictive and even mutates people into dragons and the like. Paladins are knights of virtue and many are apart of the sultansworn who I don't know much of yet. Dark Knights are pariahs it seems. They don't really seem to have really any allegiance other than to serve in the name of justice to safeguard the innocent. Many don't make themselves known as dark knights and they harness magic that is fueled by their emotions it seems.
  15. Thanks for the welcomes and looking forward to snooping around here as well. So what's up with the RP community around here anyways? Particularly with the Dragoon/Dragon Knight, Paladin and Dark Knight people. Basically Im asking if there's any organized groups of said people or anything i need to know about these types of jobs/people .
  16. Greetings and salutations mates! You can call me Fancy Pants for the time being, while I hang out around this neck of the woods. As something to note about me - I'm a goof and I like the word fancy. Actually I have a few favorite words, but lets not get into that just now . Let's see about me...about me... hmmmmm. Well I'm a long time roleplayer starting out when I was very young with my imagination pretending to be an owl or some kind of dinosaur or other animal and I just never really stopped. To everyone's surprise I was never in drama, but I was in chorus until my voice started breaking, if that helps meet the cliche niches of the school yard. As for MMO's I first got into the genre in Final Fantasy XI in Vana'diel and that's actually where I learned about roleplaying as well. I was a kid at the time and I started hanging out with a friend who played a galka there and was taught the ropes. Good times! Roamed around as a hume warrior there and got my feet wet and eventually turned into a paladin knight and then a corsair at the end. And from there I spread out amongst other MMORPG's, but above all the one I champion above all else and compare future games to is SWG (Star Wars Galaxies). There I dove completely into the rp scene and the star wars universe and even got my hands dirty with leading a guild. When SWG was shut down I tried along with the others to bring the community into TOR, but the huge culture shock and the home sickness of losing it all in SWG just crushed any hope of that and we drifted apart sadly. But I hadn't stopped roleplaying in some form or another. In fact it's kind of a criteria for me to get into an MMO that I must be willing to roleplay in it. I've collected many memories in all this time and I hold 'em precious whether they're from the face-palming time of my origins in the rp realm or some of my latest adventures - I wear a smile where ever I go. Now what brings me to Final Fantasy XIV? Simple! I really miss raising a chocobo and I have been very nostalgic for the old stomping grounds, so to speak. Granted 14 is pretty darn different from 11, for instance the eidolons/primals in this game are apparently evil... well not evil, but they do leech off aether from the planet which I guess is killing Hydaelyn which is a huuuuge bummer. Plus I have some friends that talk about 14 quite a bit and I'm curious :3. As for my character - I've yet to really decide what I'll be playing, but Im bouncing between elezen and the roegadyn races as my main (would've done Au Ra, but they just aren't beastial enough for my taste ). I think I'd like to be a dragoon. Granted they may not have the wyvern (wyrm) pet from 11, but the class still has its appeal to me and I always wanted to be one. How's the class these days? I also like the dark knight job and even the old paladin as well . Now with all that I do bear some bad news. Ya won't see me for like a year in game because Im stepping into the US Air Force around February and need the time to train and get myself settled in the lifestyle. But still when I do jump in I'll do a little dance and begin my journey exploring the game.
