  1. It’s challenging to do and takes a lot of effort to do well. Know that not everyone will receive it well and just as many will encourage it. Ultimately it’s whatever you’ll have fun playing. Roleplaying is about creativity and having fun. While I strongly advise to not blatantly ignore lore, xiv has a lot of loose ends that provide plenty of freedom. It’s important to keep in mind what was a loose end in one patch may become more specific in the next, though.
  2. I’m actually roleplaying as a Viera. I have been cautious. Implemented reasons why she won’t say much about her past. She’s never said her race, just explained she was taken from home and changed. I’m not proud of it, but I’m making it work. Some things to consider for people who say that’s a bad idea. First, while rerolling is ideal, it is not good for building relationships, trust, and loyalty IC. If you know in, let’s say, 5.0 you’re going to change your main, what’s the true incentive? My friends would all understand, but I’m not fond of building a foundation I’m going to tear down and start from scratch. Second, in the case of Viera I really like their lore from other games. I do take this with a grain of salt, but it is the foundation of my character’s beliefs and her behavior. The whole reason I got excited about Viera was the xii PS4 remastered and looking into Fran and Balthier, reading about Viera, and being stunned and giddy both about how much I liked them. I’m not not open with the details ic or ooc, but I put a lot of thought into her backstory, why she’s in Eorzea, and why she’s not a Viera. Three friends participated in an RP event to solidify this backstory and are the ones who brought her to Eorzea and help teach her customs and beliefs. If you never want to RP with me because of my choice in character, that is your prerogative and honestly I won’t hold it against anyone. Admittedly though that is why it’s a big secret IC and NOT the sole purpose and plot point of my character. She hopes to return to normal, but has made peace with the fact she may never be able to. Just Incase we never get Viera, I still have a main character I love and my friends can be close to.
  3. Well, thanks still! I thought it could be fun, but decided against it. I use a side effect of a potion taken when younger for my different coloured eyes. Allagan could have been a lot of fun, but someone had a point. A lot of my RP would be based on defending my choice. IC I could deal with, OoC... I've only met two people, but they were headache enough.
  4. To say I'm not trying to have a hook with Allagan heritage is not to say it'll never be brought up or used. It's saying that my character isn't going to revolve around her heritage. I personally don't believe one trait or another, whether personality, talents, or heritage should be the main focus of my character's development. My character should be developed by a life and the events that occurred, with heritage and culture forming how she thinks and who she is. As I said, I've decided against this idea. A combination of the obvious challenges and my dislike of red eyes in general, has made me decide a different heritage. Though I really appreciate all the input; definitely glad I asked before I used a fantasia to make it happen
  5. That's about where I stood, or I wouldn't have posted it on here I'm quite sure. I do believe it would be something I would attempt without saying it's hard fact, but as I said this wasn't meant to be an 'interest factor' thing for my character. Thanks everyone The idea can be considered effectively abandoned. It's not the first time it's crossed my mind, but I'm sure it'll be the last lol.
  6. I'm not looking for an interesting hook for my character, or anything along those lines. Most of my characters don't go running through the street saying Guess where I'm from and who I am?! Her main focus won't be about her heritage, I just thought it a unique way to explain two different colored eyes. More to myself in my Word Documents of my characters, than to the world. But even behind closed doors, I don't like to write something that isn't possible, or so unlikely that you may as well be a chosen one Hero of Light. Overall that's something I didn't really think of. They conquered much of the world, and even if unlikely, a recessive trait like a red eye popping up every couple of generations doesn't seem impossible. If family legend decides that it's because they have Allagan blood, it doesn't hurt anyone and will just sound silly when shared IC. Putting aside that I can RP false family legends, still open to any additional thoughts or input on the matter.
  7. Just a bit curious on the nature of this, if it's possible, and if it's pushing some fine lines of super duper special snowflake. Whether opinion or fact, I would like some information to make a good decision. I guess some minor background should be included. I've been trying to decide what to do with my Hyur, and I've been wanting to have heterochormia eyes. I'd like mixed heritage to explain it, and one of the possibilities to come to mind was the Allagan Empire. I'm not looking to be of noble or royal bloodline or anything like that; nor have it considered more than a family rumor that's been passed down throughout the generations. Thoughts? A late afterthought that I felt I should add. I have completed the story already, and have done almost all of the side quests for 1.0 and 2.0 (Excluding 2nd/Final Coil, but I've read about most of it.) so spoilers aren't a concern for me personally, but I do know others may read this.
  8. So then, at one point can the player base safely discuss the rumors without being spoilers? I mean do we have to pretend it never happened and stay quiet about it until 3.0? I suppose I have no reason to go around talking about it constantly, but still seems a legitimate concern.
  9. It's obvious there are rumors. Anyone who roleplays in Ul'dah would have seen that massive force of Blades and Braves moving out the city gates and hear rumors from many different sources. So that leaves me with one simple question Can players who have not completed the story see the same exact rumors? I don't know how that system works, and if that's been answered I apologize I missed it. There are a lot of pretty big holes between 2.0 and 2.55 if they cannot. On a only slightly unrelated note. I think we should all abandon the Quicksand and that awful, awful desert once and for all! To Limsa Lominsa! ..Mor Dhona would be fine if it wasn't such a massive OoC nightmare.
  10. Well, while I am not terribly pleased with the difference, I can't say I'm disappointed anymore either. As far as FFXIV goes, the male vs female armor difference exist, but aren't /that/ bad. The only one that I'm very annoyed with is Dragoon, why have that hole when the primary knights in that region use long, skewering weapons? Anyway, if anyone's played FFXI (And really many other MMOs, but to avoid tangents, comparing XIV to XI at least keeps it within the same company) the armor in this game is actually pretty good. Scholar AF is noticeably different, and I'm sure most people don't hate that. Dragoon's has that dumb difference, but since I don't enjoy dragoon.. problem solved. And as always, I made ninja work. At least my tanks get a full set of plate and not some underwear with thigh pads. So I'll make two notes on female ninja AF. First, while I don't know how the colours would go, Fuma Hakama (Same name as nin AF legs.. and yet a completely different design from female ninja.. sigh. Proof against the leg changes being necessary, since it wasn't for Fuma set) can supplement the set if you don't like the tight brown leather. Since I don't like the brooding character archetype, and my Lalafell is a bit more on the eccentric side.. I went with this: Not great, but I'm content.
  11. I understand the difference, more or less. The texture could be attributed to being a lalafell more than anything. There are even a set of small blades strapped to your hip that look great. But why oh why that colour, and more so why can you not dye it? I died a little inside dropping 600k to dye a little tiny loincloth and ignore the main chunk of the legs.
  12. I don't mind the difference on gender so much as the off colour. I'm just confused how the whole set is relatively dark but those.
  13. I am ashamed to admit that I joined the Ninja train at 2.4 release, within the hour of the servers coming back up. This isn't a new flavor pounce, merely my Lalafell has, more or less, been an assassin who focused on Aether manipulation for agility and strength. Ninja pretty much functions how I have always wanted her to be as a monk. With that said, I finally hit level 45 and acquired the much anticipated AF armor. When I got it, I was rather disappointed with the legs. And here's a picture below showing why. I've gone to Kakalan in Mor Dhona to preview how the whole set looks with the chest, and still, the legs stand out drastically. Maybe it's just a lalafell female thing, but every male I've seen gets the full shorts with those two little pads, pardon my lack of technical terms. Where as I get this silly greyish brown tight leather thing with a little loincloth flap. I went as far to purchase the Augment Kits to be able to dye AF, and the only thing that changes is that loincloth, not the tight grey-brown thing. Now, most of us have at some point or another made a compromise to dying your armor based on something on that armor set not changing to a color you like. The problem I am discovering, is that the piece I don't like doesn't even match the whole set. It's the only piece of armor on my entire outfit, even with the body, that is that colour. It stands out way too much even with the body, but I do not have a picture of that preview. I even thought perhaps the "antique" iLvl90 legs would at least change in colour, but it's still that exact same brown, but with a purple loincloth instead. Was this an oversight? Is it just a lalafell issue? Am I the only one rather disgruntled by this? The colour, the texture, nothing for this fits the rest of the outfit. It feels like SE just forgot to finish the female version. (Do note this is my OOC leveling gear. I disdain that top. I respect all who may like it, but I myself don't see a need to sport a battle bra. BiS gear until 50 though, I think.)
  14. Just as a heads up there is a sadly small character limit to linkshell names. Off hand I think 20 characters. More on topic I'm interested in this. I've been playing my mentally unstable Miqo'te lately and something with a more Adventure based theme seems better suited. I hope you let us know on here if your idea launches
  15. Just playing through a new character, viewing the story line. Kind of noticed that even the Inn doesn't sound -exclusive- to adventurers, it just sounds like it benefits them more than other people. After coming back from my story quest, and there is no spoilers in this. "Baderon: Now, it sounds to me like ye've done everythin' ol' Staelwyrn asked o' ye an' more─justifyin' me generous finder's fee in the process. Much obliged, lass! Baderon: As fer a reward...well, she's a lonely lady, this Drownin' Wench o' mine. 'Ow'd ye fancy keepin' 'er company fer a spell...with free room an' board?" I know you can interpret that how you wish, but just by that wording it sounds to me as if you pay for rooms, but you help that dude out, you got a free room. He doesn't, at any point, flat out say that You get an Adventurer exclusive room for helping! Just, we can spare a room for you anytime for free. He even references his overall tavern without bringing up the fact it has services for Adventurers only. Compare the Inn use with the leve use. This he does clearly mention the Adventurer Guild. Baderon: Not that ye'll 'ave much time fer lyin' around, what with all the leves ye'll be doin'. Oh, didn't I mention? I'm puttin' yer name down fer leves. Baderon: Our guild draws all manner o' clients, offerin' all manner of odd jobs. 'Onestly, ye'd be amazed 'ow much folk'll pay to avoid doin' an honest day's labor.
  16. Adventurers just came out as Mercenaries who worked for good-will over coin, and even then, coin too! And Merc archetypes is one I prefer to avoid. My Elezen's story is muddled, that can't be helped. But my Lalafell is an Officer of the Immortal Flames. Not an Adventurer, just a dedicated soldier.
  17. Well, while we are on the topic, of sorts. What precisely qualifies as an Adventurer? I'm not expressly against the idea of being one, I never was. I probably just got defensive because being told how to RP without any constructive criticism irks me. Are the Grand Company soldiers considered Adventurers as a whole? Are people with a dedicated job, whether it's as Sultanasworn, Yellow Jacket, crafter, etc. considered Adventurers?
  18. I agree, and I did try to point that out. All of these points. And all that was being said back to me was "I don't like your character's backstory. And the story quest says it's adventurers only!" I would ask for specific information, and their only response was "Clearly you haven't done the story." "You probably just skipped through all of your text." Well.. no, it's just been 9 months or so since I did it, so a refresher on when it says "Adventurers ONLY!" would be nice. Because nothing I recall from any story, or anything said by this community, or by any information from various sites describing Ul'dah and The Quicksand, remotely come close to agreeing with that notion.
  19. Thinking on it this morning, it seems like they were specifically trying to oust non-Adventurers, leading me to believe intentional trolling. The first question he made to initiate a conversation with us was "Have you done any leves recently?" Or something to that effect. Aside from that being an odd question, it also sounds a bit like bait to draw in people to say Nope, not adventurers, let's argue! Could be reading too much into it, but after trying to have a mature, polite conversation with the back-up who joined, I found it was going no where and he could not accept my apology and plead to stop discussion of it even after I stopped replying.
  20. That's what I sort of felt. I didn't feel like debating it IC or OOC, so I just left. Which kind of sucks, but eh. I'd argue it IC most times, but too tired to do so sufficiently tonight lol. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't in the complete wrong (I am Y in that conversation.) and if I was, I owe some apologies. Thanks goes to Andrea for posting, as it would have slipped my mind. ^^
  21. Since I am one of the blank people of text, I too would really like an opinion. My understanding, as may be stated, is that the Quicksand is a tavern for anyone and everyone, and the Adventurer's guild is just a story item that I personally do not favor following. I do not like the "chosen one" plot lines. There is not a whole lot of options throughout Ul'dah, after all. And that people looking to relax, that is one of the few offered amenities in the entire City-State. It's The Quicksand, a bar and inn of Ul'dah, but it is also home to the Adventurer's Guild, thus both "factions" would be welcome.
  22. So, I've been enjoying my Elezen who was predominately a melee character IC, but I really miss healing on my alt.. just not the alt itself. I am also stubborn enough where if I can't see my character doing a class or job, I can't bring myself to swap to that class or job. So I was kind of curious about Scholar lore, despite all I've read there's been few answers. So some opinions or even specific facts I can't find on the typical wiki pages that just quote the pretty ambiguous in game description would be nice. Eos and Selene are my main concern, but also sort of an idea. Are Eos and Selene a species of Fairy or are they specific names of two special fairies who choose to help a Scholar in their main plot? Just curious how I should address the two (though I'd probably only use Eos) if I do RP a scholar, whether coming up with my own names for them or address them as Eos and Selene. I'd like to make sure it's not a "Chosen One" story plot for having them, like a lot of the main story. I vaguely remember the quest on my other character, about finding the fairies. Would it be believable that my character found a Fairy on accident, and the Fairy taught my character how to be a Scholar? It would sort of explain the sudden interest in magic, at least to me. I would from there consider trying to get magical lessons from other players, and continue to study magic with the Fairy.
  23. What's really funny is watching a lalafell male switch to standing pose 3. The way they sweep their arms while doing it makes it look like they're windmilling, trying to avoid falling over. That's adorable. I'd love to see that. I should try it on my lala, though she's not a he.
  24. I love variations to such simple things as sitting and standing. But as mentioned, I do hope there is a system of cpose1/2/etc. Typing it once then hitting space up (or down, I forget) arrow to bring up the last entry isn't a big deal. Or hot barring it. Still, looks goofy when you're spazzing out on your chair trying to look appropriate. Everyone understands, but my inner perfectionist rails at the thought.
  25. Do you still need Brayflox? I was actually just about to post the same request. I can only go as dragoon or bard, so sitting in queue for 5 minutes optimistically, 15 minutes realistically, 30 minutes when the twelve are frowning at me, and then the risk of the group failing the last boss because the tank can't move and/or the healer can't dispel.. It's a frustrating experience. I'm actually only looking for the Infantry legs and feet, and nothing else.
