1. It is a good sentiment and I would agree, however knowing human nature, my first reaction to it was, "Weeeellll....sometimes." In my experience, it is easy to launch out criticism and not frame or think about it. Constructive criticism is good, but it also is the way one presents it. Basically, one "keeps one in check" or their speech. You don't want to "hurt" a person. For some people, it is not so easy; they have to think before they say anything. Let's look at an example: I don't like "Family Guy" and I can pick apart the faults of it all day long if I need to, however, there ARE people who DO like that show and sometimes it is as simple as, "I like it." Now if they enjoy it, who am I to point and say, "This is wrong!" ? If I stop a moment and see them laugh and smile, why not let them continue? And really, maybe I have a different view on things. The crux is, I am "cursed" with self-realization and while the majority may not have this "curse", it is not out of their reach to comprehend at times. But enlightenment sometimes can't be forced and is best when someone realizes it on their own after a period of reflection. That requires patience and I would "argue" that that would be the "nice" thing to do...and not everyone is patient or understanding. Again, from my experience with people, I see it is easier to criticize than compliment in most any situation (and heck, read ArmachiA's posts to see an example of this). Being "nice" takes some extra effort. Any two-year old can throw a tantrum but to think and empathize is a mark of society in general IMHO.
2. I decided to undertake a lite google search about some basics of this, and this is what I came up with : ◘ http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Elezen/Naming (compare this to this famous NPC example of : http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Louisoix_Leveilleur ) ◘ http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/threads/61148-Elezen-Naming-Conventions (Some copying of info from above, but I feel a pretty good basic understanding of names) ◘ http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/threads/61639-Elezen-Surnames-Please-Clarify ( A discussion of Elezen Sur-Names ) ◘ http://ffxivrealm.com/profile-posts/826/comments ◘ http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/printthread.php?tid=1777&page=3 (Two other, lighter discussions that may provide a new angle or clue, even if it is lost in some off-topic discussion.) Hope that helps. :bomb: Also, since you have a guide above, I would recommend looking at lists of French names and fitting them in or, ideally, just go to google translate and incorporate such name-concepts into your name in a way that sounds/looks good to you. http://translate.google.com/?q=ff+xiv+lore+names+elezen&bav=on.2,or.r_qf.&bvm=bv.48572450,d.aWc&biw=1092&bih=602&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hl=en&sa=N&tab=wT#auto/fr/whohttp:// I set it on "who" and hopefully it will be set to translate English-to-French so you can figure out how it looks in French and if you like it, based on the above info I've given.
3. Land claiming in GW2? I guess I could see it. There are a few places around the world I'd like to say are my character's, particularly in/around the Human City. Although, it would make me sad if I logged in and someone already "claimed" it, although I may've been there first and not logged in much. It's cute and all but really, in the end, while I sometimes do it too, I know it does not really "mean" anything if I claim an empty house as my own. I guess others are different on this. Really, there is supposed to be player housing at some point in the future of FF: XIV ARR; at least, I thought I heard so. So "claiming land" would be a moot point except for starting characters who just need a place to sleep/crash until they get their player house.
4. I also think this way, too, as ArmachiA does. I am not totally new...but I did not stick around too much in 1.0 either. I guess "Server Firsts" are cool and while I'd like that...I really do not chase them or care too (unless I am with a group and get invited to do so or I luck into it...which probably will not happen). It's a non-issue with me. I think any new people are just going to RP and bump into these group of RPC and naturally connect or continue doing what they are doing. While I do know about being "left out" because..."ELITISM!", I think generally, that's not the case. Common sense-wise, look at it this way: Say v1.0 never ended. You are a new player coming to FF XIV and you wanted to find RPers on a server or the server with the most RPers. You search and find it. The game has been out for...8 months to a year, would you be intimidated just because there already were people who have an established RP presence there? It's just like any other long-running MMO that people try to track down the RP community. CoH. LotRO. SWToR. WoW. If the game has been running for many years already and they decide to roll on an RP server, the fact that there is already an established group of players is not going to scare them away! In fact, they may be drawn to it, even if all the "server firsts" have been covered (Is there even a "badge" for that in this game? I certainly don't care! Well, I care about leveling and equipment, but give me player-interaction of just being friendly in an OOC manner!) Just because everyone gets a reboot...well, sheesh! How about this example: "Head-start"! Yes, you get your special code and key and get 3-7 days head start to play but the average person who picks up a copy when it hits the shelves does not. So, all these Head Start people have already formed Guilds and some probably already have done a few of the early "server firsts achievements" and are well on their way to do the later ones because they are ahead of you in levels. In the long-run, this whole thing does not make sense. Yes, some may be concerned by putting a star or asterisk by their name or "This guy has levels on me" but this is not ANY DIFFERENT than any normal, long-running MMO. When people worried that they could not create new characters on the Legacy server, sure. I'd be just as worried as them as I got cut-off from potential RP. I can empathize with that and a second server is cool. These other reasons? I just don't get it. It won't matter in a very short period of time after the launch, maybe even just one month after launch, it won't matter. There definitely are people who know people here. Hardly anyone knows me here except...well, I will leave that mystery up in the air, although it isn't hard to guess for those who are astute and I won't deny it. This still does not scare me away from an "established" server with "established" players.
5. Also going to add my two cents in: As a fairly new member here, I also did some googling to remember the RP server : I was on Besaid but forgot and I also forgot about the merge or wasn't around for that. So current googling came up with Leviathan and Behemoth. More cross-checking lead me to believe Behemoth might be an RP-target, although there was some evidence, via google, for Leviathan. I did put an alt on each one, but admittedly haven't played much on those: Coming into Gridania at a late hour after character creation, I did not see many people around. So, as a "newbie" I was coming up with hits on Behemoth and Leviathan but I also like to state the very first time I heard of Gilgamesh was when I started lurking these forums not too long ago. And actually, just for a theory, I am apt to believe its always been "Behemoth" as a server and somehow people forgot the name and thought, "It's that server that is named after something that is Big and Hulking....I know! Leviathans are Big and Hulking! (Well, so are Behemoths!:dodgy: )." So that may be a probable reason some people think Leviathan is the RP server: They are confusing it with the Behemoth name. Again, just a hunch/theory.
6. This is what I did. I already have the PC version of 1.0. I like physical disks, so I'll end up getting that when it is released, however, I cannot get the PC collector's edition...It seems I have to go through the Square-Soft site if I want it. So I just grabbed the collector's edition PS3 version of FF XIV ARR 2.0. Now, I have a PS3 and while I do plan on playing mostly on the PC, I sorta like the option of also playing the same account on my PS3. Plus, I get all the physical goods (and don't have to order on the S-E site if I don't wanna).
7. I just wanted to pop in and say that said NPC in Gridania is most certainly a Sea Wolf going by nose/skin color. I know because I stopped and stared at him this weekend because of that. Haha. Unless it is a mistake, I have seen two different male Sea Wolves so far with translated names. I didn't comment but I also noticed he had green-tinged skin as well, but I didn't zoom in to double-check. Plus the hour was late and I was tired and the servers announced shut-down shortly after I spied the individual (and others) with similar names.
8. I have seen other polls st other sites and yeah, generally the Roegaydn race are the least popular. They don't seem "ugly" to me; just "different". In my experience, people go for the "beautiful" or even "cute". I don't really think this goes for just races that are "large": I think there is an element of appeal and of self-identification of a sort. Let's look at the WoW-races and other MMOs: You got the "Humans" and they, IMO, tend to be the most chosen race around on many levels: It is easy to be immersed by them, even if one is not RPing. After that you got the "near-human" races, especially the elves. Dwarves, Gnomes, and Halflings do apply, but they, again IMO, tend to be "the short humans" or "the tall humans" and so on. It's not too much a step to identify with them. In general, I tended to see more Alliance-based players than Horde ones, especially initially when people were getting used to the game at launch. In contrast, when the Blood Elf race got released, many people swarmed to them because well...they are "beautiful". I am kinda thinking, since so much of time is invested in playing an MMO or even a single-player game, most just choose an archetype that is "them", even if they do not RP as one. I'd probably contend "size" doesn't have as much impact as aesthetics because, I don't think too many people are playing goblins in WoW although, that is more a hunch of mine. Goblins are small, but ugly-ish. In any event, while I do plan on an alt or two, I am glad I chose Roegaydn as my main. Makes me feel more unique-special.
9. Argh! I think that means I started a bit too early! (Was waiting on the last phase to surprise myself in the world!). Well....as they say, I will make "Lemonade" outta these Lemons. At least I know where all the NPCs and quests are and things should go much faster for me leveling-wise. :bomb:
10. I've relented showing myself off, because My armor has been "beginner" and I am in dreadful need of dyes and while googling, the only known dye-trainer seems to be in U'ldah...or thereabouts...and I was in Limsa Lominsa! Well, I got a air ticket which set me to...Gridania! I've made the overland trek from U'ldah to Gridania in v1.0 once and while I may do it again...well, I am all about "doing quests" in an area while re-exploring so it could take awhile. Also, while I seem to share a color-scheme other males of my race have. I may have to check out the the free-redesign in character creator, but I do like his look. So...I may keep it. :bomb:
11. I am actually getting a bit worried, since it may be likely progress from this phase transfers over to the next...and then to launch. I also checked myself and yep: I have a tat! So that is that! But onto my concern: I am thinking we who have seen an intro won't be seeing a new one. I think the game won't pony-up and re-start us over. I may be wrong. It would be odd if it did and I'd have to re-sign on with various Class guilds once more....although the "free XP" would be nice in a sense as I reworked previous crafting classes and upped my main class (and supporting ones) by re-doing quests. But again, I don't see that happening.
12. Maybe this is related or not; but just want to mention it and my observation: (And this is probably a bit late, but meh... ) I've been going back and forth over my main's name in-game; I played him in 1.0 but not that much. He's still fairly "moldable" like clay in terms of name/background. He's a Roegadyn, too, and his first name is a bit "unorthodox" but his last name fits a bit better, although I still may want to change it up some. I just got to Gridania and I've been heartened by some of the NPC names I've spied there. We know that a full Roegadyn (Sea-faring) name tends to have a full meaning, but it is spoken in the old Roegadyn language, as per the name-lore posts. What I've seen in Gridania is Roegadyns with untranslated names or maybe they were given those names. I forget the exact names: One was literally called "Tall Oak" or something along those lines. If we were to translate that back into Roegadyn language, it would fit. While it may be as simple a reason as a dev forgot to translate the name, I doubt it. To me, it shows an NPC that has grown up in a new culture and adopted/embraced it. My own character is a bit like that, but a bit torn between the two cultures and not so easily filed into one or the other.
13. Ack. Really? I'm a bit concerned now as my 1.0 character got the same opening as all the beta characters I've made. She's also stuck as the job I logged in as unless I do the quests. Hopefully I'll get the "legacy" cutscene in phase 4 if I'm meant to. I also sorta am concerned, but I think it is just Ashren's wording. I signed on my Legacy character and made another new character on another server. That one was in a different town/starting area: I think that is where the confusion lies ("...I got a different opening where my character was teleported and entered the city.") I mean, it could definitely be read like that. I didn't notice any tattoo mark on my Legacy character, but I was not looking for one. (And he was dressed.) And yes, cutscenes and NPCs seem to "hint" that any player seems to be a "chosen one of light", at least from my personal attempt of signing on my Legacy and creating a new character on a different server, but I got farther in Limsa Lominsa than Gridania to see certain cut-scenes. At least, that's my take on it. [Update Edit: Guess I was wrong on the interpretation as shown by Ashren Snow's reply below. ]
14. Hmmm... 1) I would try to find my way into the heart of the computer, defeat the Master Computer, possibly linking with another related world. ...or failing that, I would go out on the greater 'net and become a guardian! That is all.
15. And thank you two as well for the welcome. As with Zarek. And it could come with a Lalafell.... one of the alts I am interested in would be Lalafellian (Lalfell-ite? Lalafelling?) So they could be complimentary. And want to compliment Elkabong on the Macross-Valkyrie wearing super-armor. I do recognize that.
16. Sooner or later, I will go to Ul'dah (or start an alt there) and like I said, I didn't get too far into Gridania to check out the place but...everything seems to be the same so far as in layout of the city. Now, I *can* comment on Limsa Lominsa and the city is like a perfect carbon copy of what I remember from before. Of course, people will build on the same foundations, but I feel there should have been some variations. Maybe a red wall somewhere sticking out like a sore thumb instead of the all-white we see? Maybe a new building or three...or at least different floor plans on some of those buildings. It doesn't seem like Limsa Lominsa was touched. I will bring up that I *do* remember in the opening intro movie of Gridania, we did see some "rebuilding" there. I've only been to the inn, which looks the same. The map seems smaller from above...but, I have to explore to make sure. So far, no burnt trees or characters with hammers rebuilding as I can see. But U'ldah...well, that sounds hopeful from your quote.
17. Not trying to start an argument or belittle your opinion here but.... ...You do know that the world was almost completely destroyed by a giant dragon monster who came out of a moon that crashed into the ground right? I can't say a world rebuilding itself after an apocalyptic cataclysm strikes me as something that would be "pretty." Sure, the scenery is nice, but that's just because nature is cool looking. I knew a guy who paid $40,000 to climb Everest last year. Said it was amazingly beautiful, but he also talked about becoming sort of desensitized because there were a lot of dead guys who just collapsed on the mountain from altitude sickness and couldn't get back down in time. Just because something looks pretty doesn't mean it's not fatally harsh at every turn. Not everyone has to play a gritty character, of course. I would never suggest that everyone needs to be dirty and gross. But on the same hand, Hydaelyn is a very viable outlet for that kind of character. You're absolutely right, the world is definitely viable for that kind of character. It's equally viable for the other side of the coin and everything in between as well. There's no right or wrong answer, it's viewpoint and how a person wants to play. You view the world as a harsh post apocalyptic place struggling to recover, I see it as a vibrant world, strong of will and able to overcome the destruction of the past. Where scars still remain, the world as a whole seems to have recovered well and nicely since a mere 5 years ago. Just want to clear up something; As I said, I haven't been out into the greater world and so far, I have yet to see any "struggle" to rebuild in the greater world. I do understand that "prettiness" can hide danger, but I also expect to see some scars in the earth and maybe more active rebuilding. Even in Guild Wars 2, with the city "Lion's Arch" intact, one can go to a section of it and see a rather large scar in one section of the earth. Just saying I haven't seen that sort of evidence yet in the world around Limsa Lominsa (or the starter area around Gridania). I know life goes on, but I do expect to see some after-math, however, even the NPCs are a bit non-chalant about the big event during conversations. For my perspective, this should be about dealing with the world and its changes, through your eyes and NPC's eyes. We must remember, the origins of the early FF adventures : they were done as a way for the main writer (and I forget his name; I apologize) to deal with the loss of his mother in real life. Maybe I see that opportunity here, but I do not see it being used/shown in the greater landscape of the world (again, from the starting area around Limsa Lominsa...There very well could be areas that show devastation and/or more obvious recovery attempts). As a "reader"/"watcher", I just want to see more obvious examples of that, especially after the Apocalypse. Mind you, I don't mind a bright and cheerful world, I adore such things, but I also like to see the struggles of the common man dealing with their new situation. It's a signature in many stories I prefer, especially some stories from Japan.
18. I haven't really played too much into the game. I don't know if there is any actual difference between the in-game story if one plays on a Legacy character (of v1.0) or a newly-minted v2.0 character, but I am highly doubtful. So far into my journey of Limsa Lominsa, while we are presented with a few things, the NPCs speeches and reactions are very vague and they confess to everyone having some foggy memories as well, especially regarding the "Warriors of Light" who were so brightly lit their details are fuzzy (like looking at an something with an actual very bright light in the background). In any event, such thing is a personal journey. Some people can whip up something fast and others just feel the need to live through it. In other words, they want their history to unfold and be there for it. Basically, one could hand-wave and say, "They helped in re-construction," but some like more detail than that. They have to plan out if their NPC/PC family members survived, if they fell in love, if they were elevated in the community as towns came back together, if they went through "shell-shock" and sat out the renovation, and much more. It fleshes out a character and some would rather "pick up" where they left off in a sense, although five years have passed. Others will explain it. It's just personal tastes.
19. My main will definitely be a time-skipper. In fact, this fits very well with what I had in mind when I started on v1.0 with him, in that he already had some bits of "missing time" or "amnesia" when he got into port. Not sure about my alts...If I get to them. I am sorta siding on "Time-skip" (I actually had one alt in v1.0) but I wouldn't mind having another alt with a different background that actually lived through those five years of re-construction. It would make for a different character and personal story.
20. You probably want to buy a peripheral or just plug in a regular keyboard with USB connection. I remember some games that utilize the "in-game" keyboard on the PS3, but I don't know if this game will do so. The thing is, even if it does, it requires a lot of hunting and pecking with the analog sticks and would be slower to respond. As to the peripheral I mention, it is a rather small thing that sits on your PS3 controller and would look like this once connected: http://store.sony.com/wcsstore/SonyStyleStorefrontAssetStore/img/718x407/PS398048.pnghttp://[/img] http://store.sony.com/wcsstore/SonyStyleStorefrontAssetStore/img/718x407/PS398048.pnghttp:// You don't have to get a blue-tooth keyboard if you don't want it; any old keyboard with a USB ought to do.
21. Now...if I could just figure out how to put some spaces between some of those bullet-lists, I'll be "golden". Update : Well...it looks better now, although in reality, it is pretty darn messy (code-wise) how I did those space indentions!
22. Yeah, trying to do that. Sheesh, it's like a fire. Can't delete it and so on. ;p
23. Part 1. Basic Info (of a Basic Nature) Character/s: ◘ Black Goetterdam (last name subject to change slightly; maybe Goettervyrdam?) ◘ Orange Starsong Race: M'iquote (Also may change) ◘ Others? Primary character: Black Linkshells: None that I know of Primary RP linkshell: "I tend to get thrown out of the best bars in all the lands and the most hoity-toity of places!" Part II. RP Style (Substance and Bearing) Amount of RP (light, medium, heavy): Hmm... Actually, I can be mixed. I can go with Light and probably keep to Medium, but while I am no stranger to Heavy, I may be out-of-practice with it for the moment. Views on RP combat and injuries: I tend to view wounds as needing attending to as soon as possible, especially if an arm is cut off. Or...maybe that is not the question? I guess I can be open to it, but like many things, I will attempt to co-ordinate with the other party, either in /tells or something else. I don't like to god-mode others and appreciate the same courtesy. I also just like to be clear on a person's goals. if any. Views on IC romance: Yes? I guess. I am not against ERP but I don't see myself doing that here at the moment. As for just normal romance...I am not sure. I tend to be a bit of an MMO-wanderer (and sometimes reflect that in-character), especially if I don't gel with a community (and plus, gaming in all types is my hobby). I don't want to burden anyone with someone that may go offline for a length of time. For me, this is a catch-22. Views on non-romantic RP (family ties, etc): I guess I can be for it. I am not positive on my main; I'd have to consider it. He tends to be a loner, but can be good company. Again, I don't want to tie anyone down and "wander off" it would depend how things worked out and some understanding. Views on lore: I will keep to the most basics of the world in general, although I will admit to knowing some general info and not so much specifics. Also, while I do follow this, I tend not to be an RP-Nazi for some player's concepts, even if I am "meh" on them, unless they totally clash with my view of the online world. Sheesh, so many caveats! Views on chat functions (/say, /linkshell, etc): I tend to be a bit "old-fashioned" in my RP. I will use /say and /shout as IC, but it would be nice to have an ooc outlet, even if it is just /tells. I do tend to fallback on using "(ooc) to mark when I /say something that is meant to be ooc. I prefer to see RP, but I won't chastize folks if people break down after a good laugh and let their hair down for a bit. Sometimes that's just the general social nature of folks. Part III. Other Info (and Secrets) Country: Generally the United States Timezone: While the Pacific Zone fits, it is not where I am from. I am a night owl, but I do sometimes call an early night. Contact info: Not decided as of yet. This forum is good for the moment. Part IV. Extra Comments (Not too Spicy) Generally, I haven't RPed in a long time. I am a Legacy guy, but did not stick around for long. I tend to be private, but I want company. Maybe I am a guy full of contradictions? In a world that yearns for simple and pat answers, I am not so simple? [glow=red]~Special announcements can be found in the posts below~[/glow]
24. This thread has made me hungry for fish in real life...
