  1. The system you use sounds interesting! It's very much the way I'd like to go about conducting combat RP. Sounds like it adds far more realism and suspense to duels.
  2. I agree! I'd never force another player to abide by those rules, but I like to follow them in my own responses. If I'm in combat RP with somebody who doesn't really seem interested in a fight that might be ended quickly if they roll far higher than I do, I'll likely switch over to just success/fail. I definitely do feel that combat RP is funner when the roll difference is taken into account, though. A day or so ago I took part in some combat RP, the DM's rules stating that characters can endure 3 hits before they're KO'd. I rolled a 58 versus something crazy like a 980, so I had it completely overthrow my character, rendering him pretty much out of action after the one hit. I asked the other RP if they'd mind me doing that, or if they'd prefer a longer fight where my character continues until 3 hits, but they were totally cool w the first idea. Like you said, I feel like it's a nice nod to whatever character or roleplayer you're facing, so long as they're okay with it. Probably not something that's suited to every combat RP encounter, as it may serve only to complicated things as you said, but it's a fun way of going about it. Thanks for the response!
  3. It seems the general consensus is that taking the difference between rolls into account when RPing can make for an interesting fight, but can very easily lead to awkwardness if the RP involves multiple people. Everybody has their own idea of what a realistic injury or action is, so I suppose if everybody is taking the roll disparity into account in their own RP, then the chance of one or more players having a mixed response becomes even more likely. I definitely agree in saying that it's probably not the best route for walk-ups. It's something that's best discussed at least a little with the players involved. Apologies for replying so late, and thank you for the response!
  4. This what I've been doing, too! Wasn't sure if it was the "correct" way to go about it or not, though. Yesterday I rolled a 58 in dodging an attack which rolled 900+, so I RP'd it as completely overpowering and incapacitating my character. If I'd lost the roll by only a couple points, I'd have likely RP'd it as being just a minor injury or what have ya. That combat system sounds interesting! Sounds a lot like a tabletop RPG. Would be fun to try out. Thank you for the response!
  5. I couldn't find a way to properly explain what I meant in the title, so lemme try to do so through some examples. This is obviously something that's only applicable to combat RP based on the use of /random. Scenario 1 Your character is fighting somebody. Their foe makes the first move, rolling a 350. You roll for a counter-attack, and get 450. Scenario 2 Your character is fighting somebody. Their foe makes the first move, rolling a 58. You roll for a counter-attack, and get 900. Your character wins the exchange in both instances. However, in the first scenario, you roll only a little higher than the other person, and in the second, there's a huge disparity. So I'm wondering, is that something you would take into account when writing up your RP response? Like, if you rolled only a little higher, would you RP your characters counter-attack/parry/action of choice as being less effective than you would if you had rolled much higher than the other person, or would you ignore the difference between the rolls and RP an attack which rolled 900 the same as you would RP one which rolled a 200? Assuming both rolls resulted in your character winning the exchange. Hopefully I'm making sense! It's not really an important thing, but it's something I've been a lil curious about. Super new to RP, so I'm not entirely sure how people incorporate things like rolls into their RP beyond just success/fail.
  6. Been pretty lazy in terms of updating (well, completing...) Khaji's wiki, but I've finally started RPing with him. Kept putting it off due to nerves, aaah. 100% open to setting up connections n' stuff now, though!

    Europe?

Welcome back! I'm from the UK and I'm playing on Balmung. Haven't ran into any issues at all with finding other RPers, you'll be glad to know. :+) There seems to be a LOT of European players on the server. There are Linkshells dedicated to EU timezones, but if you were to join any Linkshell, more often than not there will be a handful of players in it who are also from Europe.
  8. Having only recently joined the RPC, the fact that I'm terrible at creating wikipages was one of the first things I learned. I've been putting off working on Khaji's wikipage for weeks. Every time I try to be adventurous and make it pretty, I mess it up beyond belief.
  9. I was getting through the introductory guildhests earlier. Joined one in which we had to fight an Elezen boss who, when low, spawns a couple of casters to heal him back up. One person in the party wouldn't stop damaging him and so he wouldn't stop spawning healers. Turned what would've been a 5 minute thing into an eternity. When one of the other newbies told them that the whole point of this hest is to learn a lesson in choosing targets, they replied with "they're for me to do whatever i want and you can't do anything about it" nice
  10. Hi! I'm new to both FFXIV and the RPC, and I've been looking around for groups which fit the style of roleplay I'd like to get involved in. Realistic themes are definitely what I'm most interested in. I love the idea of characters living and breathing in a brutal, unforgiving world, just trying to keep their head on their shoulders. Going through some of the early quests, it's evident that there really is a lot of less than savoury stuff going on in Eorzea, and so I'd like to take part in more morally grey RP scenarios which reflect that while staying close to the lore and embracing the limitations of realistic characters. As I said before, I am very new to the whole RP thing and creating OC's, so a character created by me may not be one which you feel is suited to your style, which I completely understand! I'm also a European player. GMT+0.
  11. I. Basic Info Characters: Khaji Dhoro Primary character: Khaji Dhoro Linkshells: None as of yet Primary RP linkshell: None as of yet II. RP Style Amount of RP (light, medium, heavy): Strong preference for heavy, though more often than not settling with medium due to time constraints. Views on RP combat and injuries: I'm all for it! I enjoy dark RP themes and so the aforementioned scenarios are always welcome. Khaji is an extremely frail character, so injuries are unavoidable should he take a blow. Permanent or long-term injuries are something that should be discussed beforehand, though it's extremely likely I'll be totally down to play it out so long as it's reasonable and incorporated into the RP well. Views on IC romance: Romance between characters is strictly IC. As I'm relatively new to RPing, it's not something I've done before, but I think it'd be a great tool for character development. So long as it develops naturally between characters, then I'm all for it. That being said, Khaji is not exactly the romantic type. He suffers from self-identity issues and is prone to latching on to others, so I'd imagine any romantic themes would probably be more like... unhealthy dependency themes In a similar respect, Khaji is very easily taken advantage of, and I'm comfortable with mature themes such as emotional manipulation/abuse etc. - though serious OOC discussion is definitely required before a relationship like that takes off. Views on non-romantic RP (family ties, etc): Hell yea. Admittedly, plot planning is not my strong suit, so a fair bit of brainstorming is probably gonna be required in order to set up how our characters will meet n what have you, but I'm v enthusiastic about RP involving friendships, enemies, rivals, employer/employee, mutually beneficial relationships where both characters hate each other but gain something from having the other around - everything Views on lore: I'm brand new to both FFXIV and the RPC, so I'm still learning it as I go, but I find staying as close to the lore as possible to be essential. As there is much I don't yet know of the lore, I really appreciate having things pointed out or being corrected should I say something that isn't in line with it. A little creativity is a-ok so long as it's not too out there. Views on chat functions (/say, /linkshell, etc): This is something I don't know much about. I imagine emotes and /say or /whisper are the traditional channels for RP, so I guess I'm most comfortable using those. Alternative channels such as /party while in crowded areas sounds a-ok too III. Other Info Country: Scotland, UK Timezone: GMT Contact info: Forum PM or in-game message, Discord @ #2519
  12. RIGHT. That Kermit meme perfectly summarizes the battle going on in my head rn. Ahhh, thank you! I was hoping I'd be able to find somebody on here who I could message for feedback or inspiration. You can lay your ideas on me should you feel like it as well!
  13. I'm still in the process of creating and fleshing out my character, but I think this Linkshell seems like an environment my character would do well in! I figure my Xaela would be less inclined to settle down in a city-state, favouring a nomadic lifestyle in Eorzea due to the circumstances of his upbringing; with the Dhoro tribe being constantly on the move. He's a bit socially awkward due to lack of interaction with those outside his tribe, but is fascinated by the races and cultures of the new nation he has found himself in. I've yet to transfer over to Balmung and it'll probably be a while before I do, but I just wanted to express interest now since this seems like a great lil' community. No hard feelings at all if my character isn't what you're looking for!
  14. Sounds like a plan! I'd totally be up for it. At the moment I'm going through an identity crisis in making my character, aaaah. Just when I thought I had a fairly good idea of what I wanted to do with him, I'm back to having no idea. I'd love to get involved in RP as soon as possible, but I'm a bit hesitant about it. Because I've only just created my character and haven't planned everything out or mapped out a backstory etc., I'm worried that if I jump into RP with him now only to drastically change things about him, it might cause weird conflicts. Stressful stuff!
  15. I see, thank you! I think I'd be suited to more permanent forms of roleplay as opposed to oneshots with people I meet randomly. I like the idea of RPing with a group of people over a long period of time as it lets me witness the growth and progression of other characters, as well as allowing others to see the growth of mine. Knowing that I'm in good hands in terms of RP quality is also a plus. I'm pretty new to it, so knowing I'm RPing with people much more experienced would be pretty reassuring. Large, over-arching stories aren't something I've dealt with before and it sounds extremely fun. I really appreciate your patience in helping me out with all this. I've dragged this thread out to the extreme with all these questions, haha. Thank you again.
