  1. Their reasons are probably vastly different, but Kazukata's also a widowed individual not looking to marry. That's...one dynamic I never thought I'd explore. They would be a weird duo, but between their pasts and their love of stories (though Kazu's more of a high adventure guy), they could find enough common ground to be friends, probably. If that sounds interesting, check out Kazu's wiki in my signature and we can talk more.
  2. Hey, Arietty! Kazukata could always use a Doman friend (shockingly, I have yet to run into any fellow Domans despite getting the impression they grow on trees). Check out my wiki and see if anything about him strikes your fancy.
  3. Yup, that works! As for culture, I'm afraid that's outside my limited field of expertise.
  4. Lalafell naming conventions are probably my favorite in the game. They follow a rhyme structure, with each clan/gender having a different rhyming scheme. You can find Lalafell naming conventions here: http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/threads/61151-Lalafell-Naming-Conventions Strangely enough, Square Enix has very detailed naming conventions for every race, and they're all easily accessible. Googling "(race) naming conventions" has worked pretty well for me whenever I need to figure that out.
  5. "Garleans are savage animals that know nothing but how to devour what's in front of them. Even their own kin are not safe from these urges." Kazukata would go no deal. He'd fight better alone than constantly looking over his shoulder waiting for the inevitable Garlean sword to the back.
  6. Hey Vayne! This section is an absolutely great place to get your first few contacts and give yourself a framework for exploring the rp community, but in my experience, most people usually come here specifically with a character idea looking for people to bounce off of and find other characters that might have an interesting connection to or dynamic with their own. You can look at some of the other threads here for examples of what I'm talking about. If you're looking for a group, look no further than Free Companies (our equivalent of guilds) and Linkshells (basically themed chat channels, either IC or OOC depending on the flavor of the shell). The forum has its own separate sections with lists of both Free Companies and Linkshells. Most of them have a theme (specific profession/nationality/what-have-you) of some sort, so once you know what kind of character you want to play, there will probably be a few in particular that will speak to you. Now, I'll admit there are probably some veteran people in the community that can probably assist you better than I can, but as a fellow RPC noob to another, let me share what worked for me and got me submerged into the community. Do note that this isn't the de facto way of doing things, just the way I found to be smoothest and most rewarding to get involved with the community. 1) Hit up the character workshop section! I know I'm ping ponging you around the entire forum, but stick with me here. The character workshop section is the single most valuable resource I've found on this forum so far. There are people there willing to dump every scrap of lore info they have on you, and they'll go a long way towards making sure your character doesn't break the universe or contradict some known tidbit of lore. I also find that lore, while it obviously restricts you in some ways, is great for inspiration, as well. One word of note for when you make a thread there: I'd recommend you come into the section with a rough character idea; race, gender, a few bullet points of the major events of their life. The more details you can put together, the better the people that frequent that section will be able to help you. From there you can iron out the fine details and get a better picture of your character. Start molding the clay, so to speak. After that... 2) You can hit up the RPC wiki and make a page for your character! This website is basically a database of character profiles for other people to reference. Most people (myself included) have one tucked away in their signature somewhere. Check a few out to get an idea of what they're all about! While I wouldn't say a wiki page is an absolute must, it definitely helps if you're looking to drum up contacts in this forum. The more details that are available to your character, the more likely someone is to decide their own characters will jive with you, and the wiki is the main way people find those details. If you're like me and are horribly intimidated by making a wiki page, there are some very helpful templates you can use here. You might want to get someone who's a vet around here to confirm since it isn't quite explicitly stated, but I'm pretty sure these are all fair game to use so long as you make sure you give credit to the original creators. Then after that... 3) You're finally back here in the making connections forum. It's a bit of a marathon, I know, but it's worth it! As I mentioned before, you can look at some of the other posts here for examples, but most people usually lay out three things when they start looking for connections: a few details about themselves OOCly (mostly stuff like experience and timezones), briefly describe their characters, and then lay out some plot hooks. Plot hooks are either the kind of people you're looking for or quirks about your character/their history that make them someone interesting to interact with. They're basically the tl;dr of why someone might want to talk to your character. Alternatively, you can look for other people's threads in this section and see if there's anything that strikes you as interesting. If you're responding to them, it's kind of the same deal as when making a thread: lay out a bit of info about you, your character, and what caught your eye/why you want to rp with them. I hope that helps! I know I just bounced you around to a lot of different places, so I'll keep an eye out if you have any questions.
  7. Yeah, I saw your comment in Vel's thread, and I'm looking forward to an opportunity to rp with you! What kind of schedule do you run on, might I ask? I'll try to add you whenever I hop online this weekend.
  8. Our characters sound like two regular peas in a pod, C'io. I missed this thread its first time through, but I'd say Kazukata would jive with Velice for a lot of the same reasons C'io would: He's overall positive and idealistic, but seen more than enough to avoid being naive, and is a wandering adventurer. Also, as someone who's been through his share of hard times, he'd be likely to reach out and try to help troubled individuals, though it sounds like Velice is at the point where he needs a psychiatrist more than a patient, advice-giving friend, and Kazukata would certainly be in over his head if he tried to help (which could be interesting, in and of itself). A little about Kazukata (full details on his wiki, link in my signature): he's a veteran of two wars in Doma who came with the other initial refugees to Eorzea. The destruction of Doma left Kazu similarly devastated, and he spent a few years pulling the whole "drink to forget" act. Eventually, however, he became inspired by stories of Eorzea and it's defenders, and has set out to become an adventurer who can inspire others as those who came before inspired him. The result is a generally cheerful, helpful old lancer trying to make a difference in the world with the few years of adventuring his body's got left in it. My schedule's a bit sparse, but I'm all about multiple encounters and progressing storylines, so I'd love to rp with either or both of you two, or just making it a three-way meeting, even.
  9. I'd be interested in getting my character, Kazukata Go, into this LS if it's still active. Any of the people who have come before me, can you confirm if it's still a thing? Edit: Well, it's been a week and I have yet to see any response to my query in-game or in private messages and the OP hasn't been on since September. I figured the LS was dead when nobody above me seemed to get a response, either, but I thought I'd leave this just to confirm for whoever stumbles in here next that you probably shouldn't get your hopes up if you stumble across this in two months.
  10. In that case, I'd be happy to give ShroudLife the ol' college try. I'll go sign up for that in a bit. I'm all for more meet-ups! I'll add you.
  11. Binging alcoholic saved by the power of song.
  12. I actually see a lot of common ground between Kazukata and Kasi. They're both adventurers/mercenaries, have military backgrounds, and were hunters at one point. If they were to bump into eachother on the road, I think they might be able to connect. Their differences in morals could be an interesting point of contention, as well. You mind if I add you once I get online and we can hash out more details? As for ShroudLife, I noticed it advertised around, but I'm not sure if Kazukata is necessarily what they're looking for. I'm all for rp on the road, but the LS's description was pretty explicit that it's largely for people who live in the wilderness and eschew civilization, while Kazu more just passes from town to town wherever his job takes him. If that's not a problem, though, I'd be happy to give it a shot.
  13. Ah, that's alright. Thanks for taking the time to comment! Barring major disaster, it's unlikely Kazukata will turn towards crime, but if I ever make an alt with darker intentions, I'll know who to call.
  14. Read through your wiki page, and yeah, I can definitely see where that could be a meeting that could either end up as being friends, or total rivals. Either one is great. Will look you up when the servers come back! Great! I'll be sure to add you once the servers come up.
  15. Great, thanks for the links! I'll add you once the servers are back up. I'd be happy to rp with them both.
  16. I hope I'm not being overly presumptuous by putting myself forward just as I'm stepping onto the server, but I saw a few hooks that really interested me. I would have replied sooner, but I wanted to wait until I got my wiki page into at least serviceable shape. I think Kazukata could work with either Faye or Shadiyah. Kazukata's an adventurer-for-hire with strong negative feelings about Garleans after losing two wars to them, which hits two of Faye's hooks. It's also entirely possible that he may have heard of the Harbingers of the Dawn among the many other heroic tales he's fond of, which would make him predisposed to be friendly with Faye if he ever came across her, maybe even fanboy out a little. I also see a few parallels between Kazukata and how Zularti started out, though Kazukata took a few extra decades to get there, so that could be an interesting dynamic dredging up the past. And, as a bonus, we're both operating out of Gridania, as far as I can tell? It might also be possible to use Kazukata's insistence that people do what they're naturally good at to get him to try and encourage her to be a red mage, though that one might need a little bit of acrobatics and would probably require some discussion as to how exactly we would accomplish that. As for Shadiyah, Kazukata would probably see a lot of his recent self in her. As someone who's been through a "hates having feelings" phase of his own, he'd likely be sympathetic to her and want to help her move past it. It could also create an interesting dynamic if Kazukata was regularly talking to both Shadiyah and Faye, since it sounds like they're on poor terms. That said, I don't know much about void tainted individuals, and Google isn't helping me much, so if you're interested and have any reading materials I could go through, that would be appreciated. On that note, I'll probably be a little slow on the lore in general. I've played a PVE character to 60 and seen the MSQ, but there are just so many details buried in all the different class storylines that I imagine my knowledge is spotty in places still. But if you're willing to be a bit patient and correct me where I slip up, I'd love to rp with you!
  17. Hey, Amalric! Like you, I'm also pretty new to the community, so I think it would be awesome if we could get together and rp. I also think our characters could be pretty entertaining foils. Kazukata shares a lot with Amalric (older wandering mercenary/adventurers, both refugees), but has ended up almost his polar opposite in personality (Kazukata's all about high-minded ideals and is a bit more of a goody two shoes). I think the interplay between them could be entertaining. If you're interested in giving it a shot, feel free to look through my wiki page in my signature (it's still a WIP, but all the important information is there).
  18. Hey everybody! For those who haven't seen me posting elsewhere, I'm a longtime rper and FFXIV player, but I've just started dipping my toes into the rp community. In fact, I finally got a server transfer over to Balmung a few days ago, and now that my character's wiki is (mostly) sorted out, I thought I'd put out one of these connections threads and see if I could find some people willing to take a chance on a new face. A bit about me: I've been rping on and off for a little over a decade now. MMOs, forums, D&D...I've done about everything short of LARP. I consider myself a heavy rper, but I'm also flexible for the right people and, once I've established myself and been around a while, I'll also be interested in trying to teach other people just getting into the hobby. If you want to know more about my specific rp tastes, you can read up on my profile in the player directory. For the most part, though, I'm open to a lot of different storylines. I'm also interested in ongoing rp storylines, but I don't have a ton of time to devote to FFXIV, so I may not be the greatest fit for that if you want to keep the story moving quickly. I live on Central time (GMT -6) and my regular schedule is Monday-Wednesday after 5pm and Saturday-Sunday mornings/afternoons. I can't guarantee I'll be on during those hours, as I play other games, as well, but I can guarantee I'll at least be available at those times if you want to schedule something ahead of time. Now, on to Kazukata. You can find the full details on his wiki page (see my signature), but the short version is that he's a Raen Au Ra who is (yet another) Doman refugee. Kazukata openly fought in Doma's army both against the Garleans' opening invasion and in the revolt, making him a bit of an old warhorse, even if he never rose above the rank-and-file. Gravely injured in the final days of the Doman Revolt, he woke up on a ship to Eorzea to news of his homeland being reduced to ash and his family (probably) killed. This was a devastating blow to Kazukata, who spent the time between the Domans' arrival and present day wandering around being a generally depressed wreck. Eventually, Kazukata was roused from his stupor by tales of the Warrior of Light's and others' heroics, and after seeing the people of Eorzea stubbornly persist in the face of ludicrous odds, became curious, then fond of his new homeland. And we step into the story as Kazukata has once again taken up his spear and become an adventurer, determined to become a similar inspiration for others as Eorzea's heroes have been for him. A few plot hooks from his wiki: ■ As a travelling adventurer, Kazukata is technically a spear for hire. He'd prefer to be off doing something heroic, but for good coin, he'll do mundane work, as well. Highly unlikely to accept any shady business dealings. ■ Having just recovered from being a depressed wreck, Kazukata has a soft spot for those who are facing similar struggles and will try to reach out and help them. ■ Naturally, Kazukata is eager to reconnect with other Doman refugees. ■ He'll listen to anyone with a good story, especially if it teaches him more about Eorzea. He naturally gravitates towards bards. ■ He spends most of his time in and around Gridania, so anyone in the region, particularly if they're fellow adventurers, have a chance of running into him. So, that's Kazukata. If you've got any questions or want to meet up, feel free to share!
  19. I. Basic Info Characters: Kazukata Go Primary character: Kazukata Go Linkshells: ShroudLife, Azeyma's Oath (FC LS) Primary RP linkshell: ShroudLife II. RP Style Amount of RP (light, medium, heavy): I'm a heavy rper, but I also mingle with the medium and paragraph rp crowds for the right people. Above all else, though, I love the hell out of any rp that takes me out of the tavern and consists of more than small talk around a pint. Views on RP combat and injuries: I enjoy rp combat a lot and will engage in it if it fits the story. I'll probably lean towards rollfighting since it's just an easy, no muss no fuss way of doing things, but if I know you well enough and trust you, I'm fine with more freeform combat. I'm fine with picking up temporary injuries (and, in my opinion, thanks to the magic of healing, most things are temporary), but if you're looking to inflict something permanent or long-term, I'd like to talk about it first and hold final veto power. Views on IC romance: I'm not particularly interested, and usually make my characters unavailable one way or another. Views on non-romantic RP (family ties, etc): As far as family ties or attaching another character to my character's backstory, I'd only be interested if it was someone I knew well and trusted. I feel anything else would develop organically between characters as we rp. But hey, if you have a specific idea or way you want our characters to develop, I'm happy to talk about it, and if it makes sense, I'll probably give it the green light! Views on lore: Mostly that I'm still learning it! That said, I think lore is incredibly important. There seem to be a lot of gray/not fully fleshed out corners of lore in this game that leave a lot of room for interpretation, but I don't generally condone players directly contradicting known, stated lore. If you catch me doing that, please tell me, because I'm probably being an ignorant git. Views on chat functions (/say, /linkshell, etc): I'm pretty fresh to rping in FFXIV, so I can't say I have much of an opinion. The only thing I can think of is that I would prefer my Linkshells/FC chat channels/whathaveyou to be separated into IC-only or OOC-only channels. III. Other Info Country:USA Timezone:Central (GMT -6) Contact info:I'd prefer being contacted in-game. I've got ventrilo (old school, I know), and I'll just download Discord whenever I first need it.
  20. Thanks for all the help, guys! I think I've got my character figured out.
  21. A few more questions after going through all the different walls of text: 1. Yugiri is a shinobi and a general during the revolt, but the shinobi are the ones that ultimately betrayed Doma and are at least partially blamed for the collapse. Am I right in assuming that the traitors were a group of shinobi that acted independently and Yugiri bears no blame for that? 2. The timeline's a bit murky for me, but when exactly did the Doman revolt start? It sounds like it was a full-blown military conflict, so would many of the revolutionaries have, in fact, also fought in the initial war? I was planning on making Kazukata more middle-aged, so do I need to account for the initial conquest, as well? The Garleans' initial conquest was 20 years before present time, but I imagine the revolt at least started a few years prior. 3. Something that's been a consistent frustration and would clear up a lot of my other questions, but I doubt there's an actual answer to: how autonomous were the Raen in Doma? They're constantly talked about like a separate group that allied with Doma, but literally everything that happens to Doma sounds like it also happens to the Raen, making them sound more like actual citizens of the nation.
  22. See, now that's the weird thing. Now that I go back to it, one of the excerpts in the Encylopedia link you shared explicitly says "razed to the ground." But then another one only mentions mass executions. But then that begs the question, what would have been the point of restoring order via mass executions if there was no country left to rule over? If the entire country was reduced to rubble, would there even be that many people left to execute? Considering it's just that one niggling detail that's out of step, I'm inclined to think the country is in fact razed to the ground, but I don't see why the Garleans would bother with executions if they're just going to raze the country and probably wholesale slaughter its inhabitants, anyway. I can also think of a few ways Kazukata could respect the Xaela regardless of cultural differences, not least of which the fact that he just finished fighting in one war and with Stormblood around the corner will probably be fighting in another one soon...regardless of the color of his scales, he's kind of acting more like a stereotypical Xaela than a Raen.
  23. By all means, feel free to wall of text me! FFXIV seems like it has a lot of scattered lore, so I imagine I'm stepping into the game woefully under-read despite having finished the main storyline and a smattering of class storylines. I didn't realize Doma actually still existed as a nation. All the little notes about it made it sound like the entire country just got scorched earthed off the map, but after reading through that info, I guess it's still technically reclaimable. I guess one question I have is how the relations between the two different Au Ra clans are. In the little official blurbs ffxiv has, they both take little digs at each other, which gave me the impression that they're philosophical opposites and have somewhat contentious, if not outright hostile relations. Is that a correct assumption, or is it considered a non-issue most people don't care about? Are any of the differences between Raen and Xaela of any import for rp, or going to color how people view characters of each clan?
  24. So! I'm figuring out my first rp character for ffxiv: Kazukata Go. I had two things I wanted to figure out before I start actually using him. First, I think his backstory works, but ffxiv's lore is pretty scattered in random tidbits, so I wanted to post it just to make sure it all checks out. The general outline I've got for Kazukata is that he's a Raen Au Ra that participated heavily in the Doman revolt, but managed to escape with the other refugees Yugiri brought with her. (So far as I can tell, that's about the only way an Au Ra could end up in Eorzea short of a long and winding solo journey?) He made it out with basically just the clothes on his back, then quickly parted with the other refugees and went on to spend most of the events of Heavensward moping around after seeing the revolt that had basically become his life get crushed. As he's learned more about Eorzea and its heroes, however, he's started to regain a sense of hope and purpose, and has decided to adopt the spear in defense of his new home. Personality-wise, he's blunt and utilitarian to a fault, but also friendly and eager to give what advice he can to others around him. He probably comes off as judgmental or a busybody to others, but he genuinely views his advice as an attempt to help and better those around him. I've given him a quirk where he obsesses a bit much over people's natural talents and uses them to categorize his world (so, for example, he would wonder why the hell a Roegadyn would ever want to be a white mage -- why put all those muscles and natural size to waste!?) He's personally opted to become a Lancer because of this philosophy, as he feels a spear is the best tool to utilize his tall but wiry frame. I think that's enough of a baseline to work with starting out. But what I'm more worried about are the little details, the things I'm going to be screwing up and not even realizing it until someone pulls me over a month down the line. For example, I randomly noticed someone mention that most Domans speak their language with < > around the text. So I'm looking for pointers on little random stuff related to my character like that that I'd never be able to figure out without someone telling me. I'm probably just overthinking this part, but it never hurts to be prepared. On a side note, Doman Au Ra would know Doman, right? I understand they helped the country, but flipping through the forum, I also read that Doma itself has a predominantly human population, and I don't know when exactly the Au Ra stepped in...have they been around long enough to know the language?
