Branson Thorne Posted March 26, 2015 Share #1 Posted March 26, 2015 If so what do you think so far? I just downloaded it last night but haven't played it yet. Kind of curious to see what it's like. I never played any of the Dark Souls games, but this game appears very much like that. I also love they dark tone they went with in this game (going by screenshots only) but I'm also fascinated with the era that the game is set in. If anyone wants to attempt coop with me, shoot me a pm here or add me on PS4 at HillbillyHoser Link to comment
D'eshel Posted March 26, 2015 Share #2 Posted March 26, 2015 I'm kind of annoyed that this game has even -more- cheap ways to kill off the player. Now I don't mind difficulty in games, I just hate it when it feels so fake and forced like it sometimes tends to do in the Souls' series and even moreso here. Other than that, I'd say it's... well, good. It certainly isn't a revolution, it certainly is a Dark Souls game but with a diffrent skin and some new combat gimmicks, so if you haven't enjoyed that, don't bother with Bloodborne, because this is exactly the same kind of pie. Dravus Posted March 26, 2015 Share #6 Posted March 26, 2015 I may check it out eventually. It's on my list of games that intrigue me enough to play at some point but I have so many other games to distract me at the moment that I've decided to hold off on buying it for now. Link to comment

The only games i have to play really are Diablo 3, (which I've 100% completed on my old ps3,) Call of Duty Advanced Warfare, Ffxiv, and now Bloodborne, so my plates not really that full. Kurt S. Posted March 26, 2015 Share #8 Posted March 26, 2015 Well I like it at least of course the fights seem simpler....or I could have just gotten used to it after beating DS DkS and DkSII. Oh yeah the backstep is your bestfriend in this game and if you didnt know catch the enemy mid attack with your gun and you stagger them for a couple of seconds. Though I still haven't figured out what other conditions need to be met for that since it does not work all the time just most of the time. And if you take damage you can lifesteal that all back by smacking your opponent...and as long as the orange bar is still there. Also the locations look pretty and dark and pretty dark and creepy as shit when you manage to start branching out of Central Yarnham. Did I mention some of the enenies look like the stuff of nightnares? And since you haven't played any souls game well let me tell you this...if it doesnt die in two hits back away and try again in the next opening. Do not be greedy on the offensive. Also backstep is your friend use it well and study the enemy animations and see what does what and where. But above all else be prepared to cry and die and rage a lot. Take a break if its getting too much and all. There is also a way to cheese the fight with two wolves on the bridge. Suppose you come in from the plaza thingy right. Run past em and keep your eyes to the left you'll see a small path that leads to a house. You'll know it's the path to the house because there's a torch guy standing by the entrance. Get in the house, kill the sword guy and the axe guy on the 2nd floor then the torch guy that follows you in. Now take your longest reaching melee weapon and smack those wolves that can't get in due to the doorframe being small. Easy 900ish echoes. Also you have like a 2 second window after every enemy combo or heavy attack where you do considerably more damage. Now to pass out. Link to comment

cuideag Posted March 26, 2015 Share #11 Posted March 26, 2015 I am really looking forward to picking this up, but I need a PS4 first. Dang if this wasn't an exclusive... Been watching some friends play here and there and it looks fantastic! Really loving the atmosphere. Link to comment

Cest Posted March 26, 2015 Share #13 Posted March 26, 2015 I've been pretty addicted to it the past few days now. Kinda has been cutting into my FFXIV as I tend to lose track of time. I've not had a chance to try a Chalice Dungeon yet but I may pop one up later today and report back. Link to comment

allgivenover Posted March 27, 2015 Share #17 Posted March 27, 2015 I'm really enjoying it but there's a few things I don't like about it, which will probably drag me back to Dark Souls II for long term PVP. Very few weapons and armor compared to Dark Souls. No magic. No ring slots. 3(?) oaths (covenants) No equip load No respec. Don't get me wrong, it's amazing. I <3 the gun-parry system and the focus away from shields. But I loved the insane variety and quality of life additions that Dark Souls 2 had, so unless the PVP scene is really, really good I'll be going back to it after I'm done. Link to comment
Harmonixer Posted March 27, 2015 Share #18 Posted March 27, 2015 The effects of the rings are put into Runes/Seals whatever the fuck they are called. You have to switch them out at the bench, once you get far enough in the game. Main-hand weapons are basically two weapons in one, the lack of variety is vaguely balanced out with this annnnnnnd: I like the simplified stats, the weapon customization is MUCH deeper than Souls. You can make STR weapons scale with SKL instead, you can add poison to weapons without having to lose base damage. It's wicked nice. The game is focused on evasion and offense all in the same motion. You can evade through everything, nearly anyway. I noticed I was able to just stay on bosses 90% of the time and had a much higher survival rate than trying to get away. The most distance gets you killed it seems like. I've died more to random wolves and dog than to any boss so far. Along with another mob I won't spoil here, they remind me of trick or treaters. (You'll see.) As Hunters, we answer only to ourselves (and blood). It's nice that I don't have to grind rep with anyone this time. I like the coop better here too, even the PVP is already better than Dark Souls 2. Plus the hitboxes are a bit better than Dark Souls 2, Yay! EDIT: I stand corrected! There ARE Covenants. Won't spoil too much though. This game is everything good about the Souls series in a different environment and better. It's super gorey and bloody, has plenty of personality. It's most crippling features are the load times, which last I heard are getting patched out hopefully and it's absolutely shitty framerates. They TANK when too many things are on the screen or you do multiplayer. Really kills the mood running at 30fps in a game so pretty but it's worse when it drops dramatically sometimes. I say, if you have the system and the money, it's a great title to add. For vets from the Souls series you should give it a shot and see if you can handle it. It's a real ego crusher if you hid behind a shield in Souls. You just can't do that in this game. Don't second guess yourself, just rush that shit down and paint it red! Link to comment
Aaron Posted March 27, 2015 Share #19 Posted March 27, 2015 Also another word of advice for new people. If you see a group of humans 3+ in numbers. Don't even think about it, this isn't assassins creed. You will kill one More will appear You will be mobbed You will futiely run or dodge They will set dogs on you You will be caught You will be ripped apart You will die Link to comment
Harmonixer Posted March 27, 2015 Share #20 Posted March 27, 2015 I really disagree, the evasion really lets you dance between all of them like it's nothing. It's really about paying attention to your stam and not boxing yourself in. It's pretty much the opposite of what you should do in Souls. Get in there, I'm telling you. You can transform attack into evasions, it allows you to get i-frames while getting off a nice power attack- stuns and the advantage. Picking the apart one by one works but you risk boxing yourself in faster. The weapons hit multiple targets and have such intricate animations for a reason I think. Link to comment

Were talking about that mob of people around that fire pit before the ogre right? If so no amount of dodging or cc is saving you from all of them. They will attack you from every angle. There's simply too many to go all offense about. Link to comment
Harmonixer Posted March 27, 2015 Share #22 Posted March 27, 2015 The way the game works, it allows for a few different playstyles. Since red health can get gained back within a certain amount of time- getting clipped by something doesn't mean the end. With the Cane I was able to take on that group. Rushed the fellow on the ground with the firearm, zip back to the next mob and used my own pistol to interrupt an attack/evis. You're invincible during this. It gives me time to think about my next move. The main thing I had to worry about was the ranged guy on the carriage and the dog. It's not so much 'swing ur armz' so much as using the flow of the fight to your advantage. They telegraph often and you'll just need to be attentive. You'll see. Pretty soon there will be a ton of videos with people all playing different and you'll find it's very possible with the right movement. Don't get discouraged! I promise it can be done. Weapons have big arcs and being able to transform INTO evades that also attack? It's not easy by any means... at first. Eventually it'll become second nature. EDIT: Another thing me and a few other peeps playing figured out. I don't recall seeing in this thread On the subject of getting recently lost HP back with attacking, it's also possible to swing a dead body for a few seconds and still gain HP. Say you traded blows with something and you finished it off. If you keep swinging at the body you can still get HP! Even if it's already dead! A good example is those giant boars- you can apply this nearly anytime you get the chance. Only a few mobs I've seen it doesn't work on. Link to comment

Devereau Posted March 27, 2015 Share #24 Posted March 27, 2015 If you are just starting out, I would recommend a Skill build. This game is VERY much more offensive and fast paced than its predecessors. While dying doesn't feel QUITE as punishing as the other games, they did go back to classic check mark styles, so you are going to have to reclear unlike some that seemed to have bonfires scattered like 7-11s (lookin at you DS2.) I was a little shield and spear magic bitch so I am like, caught on the second boss, but holy shit I like this way better than the others. Especially the theme. My only anger comes from my shitty inability to play it well enough to see more of it. There IS magic, but I would recommend saving arcane builds for something like, second play throughs. The magic type weapons equip on your gun slot and consume bullets. Some are pretty bloody epicly powerful from what I hear though. Not worth first go around speced though. To be honest, I screwed around with the character editor so much. Aptly named my character Devereau because I am awful. Link to comment
Branson Thorne Posted March 27, 2015 Author Share #25 Posted March 27, 2015 So my 1st complaint about the game is that there seems to be a lack of direction of what I'm suppose to do. Do I simply wander thru an area killing things while trying to make it to the next area? I'm assuming there are no quests to undertake? (that or I have not discovered any yet) I'm still at the starting area, but past the burning fire with everyone gathered around it, I'm in the alley with all the dog cages, and I'm still not sure what I'm suppose to be doing here exactly. And yes, I suck, and I'm a noob, etc etc etc. Lol Link to comment
