Blue Posted October 28, 2015 Share #3 Posted October 28, 2015 Unfortunately killing chocobos does not provide any meat, nor are there any recipes available with chocobo meat (since, we can't get it). So I am going to assume it is very local cuisine typical of the Forelands' hunters. Link to comment
Nodem Posted October 28, 2015 Share #4 Posted October 28, 2015 I have to ask this. >.> Are they considered to be a source of food as well as transport in lore? <.< Tough question as it's yes and no. You can eat them, and people have done so. It's frowned upon though in certain regions such as around Tailfeather where nature is to be respected. You'd also be eating into your profits. Pun intended Though I imagine they taste like chicken. It's safer to just ride them and if you eat them, don't get caught or let people know. :chocobo: As for breeding them for food, there is no mention of chocobos being breed as a food source. As a matter of fact, most chocobos are captured wild and then broke in before being sent to Ishgard and so forth from there. Link to comment
Caspar Posted October 28, 2015 Share #5 Posted October 28, 2015 I feel like its akin to eating horseflesh. You can do it and it can be tasty, but why bother when the animal is worth so much more as a breeder, mount or pack animal? The only case i can think of where it wouldnt be seen as wasteful is if the animal is decrepit or maimed such that she/he cannot perform. Link to comment

Neki Posted October 28, 2015 Share #15 Posted October 28, 2015 I agree they are like horses in our world. Ride em but don't eat em! Though....I do vaguely remember a side quest where you had to feed baby dragon deep fried chocobo thighs since he was curious about the food man eats...but after eating it he said it was disgusting and questioned why we cook our food and don't eat it raw! Link to comment

I WOULD NOT EAT A CHOCOBO, NOR ANY OF MY CHARACTERS. *pets choco chick like a Bond villian* It's a question I've had to think about myself, as Virara considers her chocobo an emergency food supply and his name refers to a type of fried chicken wing. She often needs to be discouraged from eating him: fortunately he is ill-natured and has little trouble doing that himself. Link to comment

Caspar Posted October 29, 2015 Share #18 Posted October 29, 2015 Seconding the Horse comparison. I always thought Dodo's were the poultry of choice. And actual conventional chicken exists too. We don't know how chocobo compares to chicken and duck (Or for that matter, dodo, still find it hilarious that what is extinct in our world is common and large enough to be a pest in theirs.) in flavor and texture, but I personally imagine a chocobo chick tastes similar to a chicken, while full grown chocobo is robust and hearty in a way that approaches red meat, but still has texture typical of poultry. Like ostrich meat, maybe... Still, I can't imagine many people eating it. It'd be frowned upon like eating dog almost. Link to comment
Branson Thorne Posted October 29, 2015 Share #19 Posted October 29, 2015 As a hunter, I can say with experience most birds do have generally the same taste, but yet different at the same time Link to comment
TK Hikaru Posted October 29, 2015 Share #20 Posted October 29, 2015 While I imagine some people do eat chocobo meat, I feel like it's done in areas where other sources of meat are hard to find. Like how in some foreign countries, horse is a potential choice of meat. That said, with dodos, chickens, ducks and buzzards, I think most Spoken have enough poultry to satisfy their urges without turning their forks to their beloved chocobos. Link to comment
Caspar Posted October 29, 2015 Share #21 Posted October 29, 2015 Raptor meat may also qualify as poultry, or similar in flavor profile... Yeah, I think it would be an alternative meat. Eorzea is full of edible animals for protein and none so far are described as being unpalatable, other than some of the monsters near outposts like Camp Cloudtop and Whitebrim IIRC. Link to comment

Tailfeather lives of hunting, and not all chocobos captured turn up to be fitting for the Ishgardian market. Most of hunters live of what they capture and cannot sell. Link to comment
