Question on Half Breed and naming~

Recommended Posts

Hey there everyone. I recently started to look into my character a bit further, and I decided to make him a half-breed as a Seeker (dominant)/Keeper. He has one pale white eye and one golden. It would be my first Seeker, so I am still looking into their lore... but so far, I would like him to have been exiled from the K tribe due to mistrust.

I was thinking about having him IC drop the apostraphe between K and oga, to form the name Koga, in reflection of this. I figure there isn't much guidelines on how halfbreeds would be named, but could this be something that would make sense?

I looked in to the Miqo'te naming lore when I was creating Asah, since she is also a mixed race children (keeper being her dominant side) and I found some usefull information on name lore here!

Hope it helps you! :D

If your character got booted from the tribe, he can take whatever name he wants. I'd question the rationality of including the K from the former tribe in his new identity, though. It could paint the wrong picture to his tribe and the world around him.

If you just want an excuse to be called Koga, go for it.

Thank you for the reply Warren!

I dont really mind that, but, yes. I liked the name Koga after removing the K' -- According to the wiki, it sounds like Kooga, or Oga, which, initially wasn't my intent. But I do like Koga.

Thank you for that link Miqotea! That is the one I had looked at though when I realized the K-sound wasn't what I intended rofl!

Yeah, that's not a problem. I was just thinking that, depending on the circumstances surrounding his removal, it could be strange or even potentially hostile for him to continue to use it in his identity. The apostrophe would make the difference to other miqo'te, but anyone else might just make the assumption he's part of the Ks still.

Really, depending on how your character feels about being expended, that could make an impact, too. I'm not asking you to spill spoilers or anything, but if this guy was thrown out on inaccurate suspicions? I could see him dropping the K out of spite or resentment or something. For some things, the why is just as important a question.

I apologize if this sounds overly stiff or oppressive, I'm just thinking of how I would try to rationalize it if I were in your shoes!

Oh, not at all! Its a good question! :) I am still building him as a character so its all good. :3

He could possibly have just been met with some general distrust most of his life until he decided he wasn't wanted so he went his own way instead of being exiled? Perhaps it would be better than exile?

In my opinion? I think that would flow a little bit better. He keeps the letter out of recognition for his past but moves on to break away. Willingly leaving something will always be better than being ejected!

Seekers aren't always referred to by their tribe names, and can be dropped in regular conversation. There are times when Y'shtola is referred to as Shtola, and F'lhaminn is referred to as Lhaminn. I could see this character dropping their letter if they were exiled or left of their own dislike, but if you want a reason for them to keep it, you could. I imagine they could also have been _'koga before leaving their tribe, if you were attached to using that name.

I will point out that, for Seekers, dropping the tribal prefix is akin to using a familiar nickname: a lot of Seekers take affront to people they don't know doing this. If K'oga grew up in the K-tribe, he'd likely have internalized this to some degree or other. He could very well decide that dropping the glottal apostrophe would be a better alternative, and become Koga.

I do think that it's more likely he'd leave the tribe than be exiled for being a half-breed. He's a half-breed either because his mother or his father was a Keeper. If his mother was a Keeper, she'd have to have been part of the tribe to begin with (Keeper females mating with the nunh of a Seeker tribe are rare, but not unheard of - C'kayah's maternal grandmother was a Keeper who did this). If his father was a Keeper, it implies that he was an outsider who boinked one of the tribes women. If being a half-breed is that bad, then K'oga would have either been killed/given away as a baby, or his mother would have been exiled with him. All of this implies that, if he was accepted enough to grow up within the tribe, that he wouldn't later be exiled for being a half-breed. Being exiled for something else is another matter entirely... ;)

Just keep in mind that if you want to be picky about the lore, when dropping the tribal name, it isn't just the apostrophe that's dropped--it's the whole letter. I've seen a ton of Miqo'te make their names something simple like "J'ohn" and "D'ave" and "W'endy" or whatever, but that's not how the naming conventions work. As Alderique pointed out above, dropping the tribal name would have them be called "Ohn," "Ave," and "Endy."

An example of this is my own character, Val. He dropped his and is simply Val, whereas his tribal name is W'val.

This is a wealth of info, guys! Thank you so much! @_@ *Gives hugs for all*

I'm thinking about having him just decide to leave for general distrust of the tribe towards him. Not outright hostility, but varied discrimination. Perhaps when something went wrong, eyes were turned to him/he had to make it right, which he got tired of. Sometimes got in fights with others (I think he's sort of like a brawler class-wise).

I'm still thinking about how I'd like to handle his name, but everything you guys have said so far are very helpful! :D
