Free RP for Newcomers

Recommended Posts

Hi, I don't usually post in Making Connections so I'll get right to the chase:

I see a lot of newcomers (and a few people who have been around a while) complain that they just can't seem to find RP. The game, unfortunately, has become sort of cliquish. This isn't a post to just bash the RPC about this. It happens in any game that's been around for a few years, especially one with built-in housing. People get comfortable with their friends, and housing offers a nice escape and a stage to tell stories. Everyone prefers their friends to strangers. It's no one's fault.

That being said, a lot of the complaints I see from these friendless new players is that they don't like the idea of just doing awkward walk-ups at the Quicksand until someone acknowledges them, and I can't blame them. I've been there and it's awful. It can be very discouraging and really eliminate a great deal of potential new RPers, like baby turtles racing to the ocean.

So, anyways, this isn't just a shitpost to complain, I'm actually offering a solution, even though it's a very small solution:

RP with me. I've been there. It sucks, and I feel bad any time I read a thread saying people are just lost looking for people to play with and can't find them. I don't care what your character's story is, or if you're going to fit in with my crowd or if you're a god-moding weirdo. If you've been sitting at the Quicksand and failing to initiate walk-ups and you hate crowds and you just want some good storytelling with a stranger, PM me in game or on this forum. If I'm online, I'll drop whatever it is I'm doing at nearest convenience (If I'm in a dungeon I'll finish it obviously, but I won't start a new one) and I'll meet up with you on your terms. My character is a bit gruff, but he's personable enough, and he can get along with anyone. I realize this isn't anyone's first choice, and that doesn't offend me, but if you're really struggling to initiate an IC conversation for whatever reason, message me.

Do not quit because you're discouraged. Find me. I'll be your pal.

That's my offer.

*You don't have to be new

Frankly, you can extend this to the whole FC. We don't care who you are, or how weird your dude is, or how new you are or aren't. Send messages, walk right up, whatever.

A lot of people just sit in their houses, which is fine, but we don't (and not just due to lack of house) and we're not hard to find.

I sometimes wonder if there are FC houses or even personal ones that are set up with a tavern like setting and open to the public on a regular basis for things like this.

The Quicksand is extremely popular, too much so if you're trying to IC "meet in the city" with a contact or for something like this post suggests. Sure there are other bars in other cities, but sometimes people want an audience to fish out more connections.

I think it's pretty awesome you are offering up your time. I hope some people who are struggling in the population take you up on it.

There are definitely FC houses set up like taverns that are open to the public pretty much almost all the time. The Coven is one of them! We usually post it up on party finder and get a good 10 people in there and the chat scroll is way more manageable. Even then we're usually open even when the party finder isn't up.

See I had NO idea (and just found out about RP in party finder the other day >.> ).

Would be nice if there was a list of such places. *coughs* But I'll keep an eye open for yours next time Kai has a business or even social meet up.

So I'm glad ya'll like taverns and everything, and by all means: Keep drinking and taking off your clothes, then smearing beeswax on your eyelids, or whatever the fuck it is you kids do these days.

I can't stop you. I don't want to stop you. I acknowledge that you're having fun, and that you want to be there, and that you get something out of it.

With that being said fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuccccccccccckkkkkkkkkkk taverns. I would rather eat my gun than sit in another tavern while someone plays god damned spin-the-bottle. I would rather nail my dick to driftwood and float down the river than see another super-secret plan to do whatever hashed out over a pint, in a public place.

There's a big ol' world out there that doesn't involve barstools, dancers, a gross misconception of what ale is like (it was so fucking weak, dude. For real. It tended to be like 3% or less, and tasted like bread), or people getting just way, way too friendly right on the table.

We get out there in that. I'm not gonna speak for my dude up there, because he's grown and makes his own choices, but don't expect to find me in a tavern. Call me up for everything else.

smearing beeswax on your eyelids,

....We beezin'?

This post is a little much imo, (holy shit, Shuck) but I do echo the sentiment that walking into a tavern to RP is pretty anti-climactic at times and it isn't how I like to spend my time. We have a huge open world to explore with monsters and ancient ruins and tombs and armies and magic and I find it shocking that all of the RP I seem to come across is either in some guy's house or the dreaded Quicksand.

My point isn't to tell people they're stupid for hanging out in a tavern if that's what they want to do, but adventure RP is the best way to RP in my opinion and my offer still stands on RPing with anyone on their terms so in a tavern, in a house, on a train, with a mouse. Whatever. BUT(TS) I do want to work on getting some more people to bring back outdoor RP. I miss those walk-ups. I'm sure they still happen, but I don't see them very often anymore. So hopefully anyone who takes me up on my offer will agree to some healthy e-exercise and we can go around punching rabbits or whatever and talking about pirates. If not, that's cool, I can deal. Main priority is making sure people don't get discouraged and quit because they can't find RP pals.

Did I just hear someone say adventure rp? I think I just heard someone say adventure rp. If that's the case, sign me up! Taverns are (in my mind) a necessary evil, since the world is vast and full of empty space to never run into someone. You need to have some sort of gathering place, but I love the hell out of anything that drags me out of the tavern for more than the standard trading stories over a pint rp.

That said, if we're talking world rp, Kasi's ShroudLife linkshell is certainly a good start, since I don't think anyone's mentioned it yet. Outside of that, though, I'm game to hear any ideas anyone's got.

Okay, I was hanging back a little to let the shier people who haven't been able to dig out some good roleplay in the game yet take the stage, but the mention of world RP and fluid, adapting walk-up RP caught my attention.

I want to work with you on that, on bringing it back. I'll admit that I don't know how it works now that roleplay has become more paragraph-y and less quick bursts of dialogue and action (anecdotal, so may not describe the whole population), but I'm willing to learn insofar as it brings us back to the open world!

Yeah, if anyone is interested in ShroudLife, I link it in my signature. It's a good spot to link up with other players out in the wilderness for some shenanigans. The more connections the better, I figure.

As for taverns? Yeah, I tend to agree; it's not typically the pinnacle of meaningful RP that's going to lead to ample amounts of character development. Now, taverns with an ulterior motive behind them, on the other hand...

Not that I'm biased, or anything. Ahem.

So, for anyone interested in my offer of free RP, I'm going to try to be at Spellguard on Friday and The Grindstone on Saturday. I'll be spectating both, not competing, so feel free to come up and say hi. Otherwise it's just me watching people roll dice.

As for adventure RP, I just got back on this character for the first time since Heavensward launched, so I'm going to be doing a lot of Ishgard adventures on my grind from 50 to 60. My group and I RP a lot of what we do out in the world, so if you're in that area I'll be on all next week, as I have no RL responsibilities for the whole week. Send me a tell in-game or a PM on this site, or just send me a friend request if you want to see where I'm questing and if that interests you beforehand. Don't be shy. I promise I won't laugh at you if you're awkward, and I don't care if you laugh at me for being awkward. If our characters don't mesh well I'm not going to hold it against you OOC.

I know some of you said you were interested, and I'm pretty excited to see where this goes. I've been busy with some unexpected RL stuff so I haven't had the time to reach out to people individually, but the plan to get newcomers some easy-access RP early on, and to bring back some adventure RP for experienced roleplayers who miss it or never got to experience it, is still very much something I'm trying to accomplish.

Basically,

"If you meet me online by Grubb's Tavern, I will show you where the treasure hidden."

Taverns are far from the pinnacle of meaningful RP, but they are a good place to meet people and make some contacts that might lead to some nice RP elsewhere further down the road.

Tavern RP has its benefits. You can meet people, it's a good place to relax after some adventure RP if you still want to be IC, and it's a good planning spot before some adventure RP. It just confuses me when people do all of their in-game RP in a tavern and then develop their character off-screen in their own headcanon. That's barely RP anymore. It's just you talking about a story you wrote by yourself, while looking at a model of the protagonist of your fanfic. I just don't get it.

But I didn't start this thread to bash on tavern RP. I just put in some jabs and it turns out other people don't like it either. If that's what you're into, that's what you're into.

I cannot express how awesome this thread is. As one of those people where it took considerable effort and time to try and get into the rp community over the past year and a half, feeling disheartened in the process, it's reassuring to see so many people that are so welcoming to new folks. I've already passed this thread on to a few other new rpers I've had contact with.

As I'm also still looking for more contacts or rp, you can be sure I'll hit you up in-game if I see you.

For others that may read this thread that are in the same boat, feel free to add me or poke me in-game, here, or on tumblr for rp as well. Don't be afraid to whisper me. I'm one of those folks that will derp around either idling or doing content just to kill time. I will drop everything for rp. Even if I'm not in-game, I can usually be in-game right away. While I love story/plot-driven rp, I'm open and willing for any kind of RP. I find social rp is great for meeting new people and forming new connections. To find those you're comfortable with doing more story-driven rp with.

My main is a tribal Xaela hunter from the Oronir tribe. She loves learning about other cultures, cooking, and teaching those about her own culture and how to hunt without wasting. She's got a heavy accent, and the language barrier makes for some funny moments with trying to understand jokes and idioms.
