Gideon Aryeh Posted August 20, 2013 Share #51 Posted August 20, 2013 I see your Donut BallZ and raise you a Tyke Myson (a Lalafel pugilist to boot). I am jealous you saw this! Omg so funny. Am I the only one who gets a laugh out of seeing these names? I'm sorry but I don't feel like I am playing an mmo if I don't see one of these. Damn you Gilgamesh dingbats with your boring names! I DEMAND better idiot names like the one above! *pouts* Tyke Myson Link to comment
Asyria Posted August 20, 2013 Share #52 Posted August 20, 2013 A few thoughts that occured to me reading the last few posts... Official labelled RP servers actually get more trolls than unofficial ones because the trolls don't need to do any research to find them. It's like a shining beacon. Trolling by RP... I've seen this on Rift. Some guy was /dancing naked in the middle of people (including me) having a IC convo. I tried the "integrate them" approach saying things like how he was a madman etc. and the guards should take him, that poor crazy man, for disturbing the peace. Then some guy (probably is accomplice) came along taking his side and saying he was doing nothing wrong and he was just dancing because he was happy we shouldn't bully him, all of this of course IC. In hindsight, it was pretty hilarious and I can understand the trolls getting a kick out of it. I mean come on, anyone who played D&D knows this: interrupting RP with a joke is always funny... the thing when we RP online is we get into it, and we feel like we're being interrupted by an outside source. It's like someone bursting into your living room during a D&D game and doing or saying stupid things It's not what is being said or done that is really annoying. Half the time, in another context, it would be funny. It's the inappropriateness of it. Of course, that's exactly what makes it funny for them. As for funny names.. sorry Rock, I don't remebmer all of them! But be sure play the Namespot game in your OOC LS (which I totally forgot to join cause I was too busy SA. ^^; ) Link to comment
LiadansWhisper Posted August 20, 2013 Share #53 Posted August 20, 2013 Best names I saw were "Cloudy Strife" and "Reno Shinra" ...And the Legendary Lalafel, slayer of beasts: "Dong Squad" Let's see... I ran into Sylvanas Windrunner, the Silver Surfer, Khaleesi Drogo, Dova Kin (lol), Child Molester (I wish I was kidding...it was A Mi'quote), Ramrodicus Maximus (a male Highlander), Bok Choy (a Lalafell), Balon Greyjoy...honestly can't remember the rest. There were a LOT of hilarious names the first day. Link to comment
Selsix Posted August 20, 2013 Share #54 Posted August 20, 2013 Oh oh wait! I remembered a couple other good ones I saw: Papa Smurf: Lalafell Steak Sammich: Roegadyn Oh and a male Elezen named Red XIII. ...Couldn't he have at least made it a Miqo'te? :dodgy: Link to comment
Jomoru Posted August 20, 2013 Share #55 Posted August 20, 2013 Best name I saw as in Phase 3. Cherri Poppins Link to comment
Raccoon Posted August 20, 2013 Share #56 Posted August 20, 2013 There was a Child Molester and Noble Rapist outside Ul'dah. Didn't find them funny but you gotta hand it to them for being able to start a shitstorm without needing to say a word. /shout was an endless tirade from everyone that spotted them. Link to comment
ShoggMommy Posted August 20, 2013 Share #57 Posted August 20, 2013 While I was on Balmung; I had this crazy naked elezen guy dance and thrust in my miqo'te's face... o_o; And uh... Flirt-spam which I ignored completely since I have separate tabs. Didn't even acknowledge him. Best thing to do is just not pay any attention. He got bored after five minutes and left. As for names... I saw everything from KneeSocks to Opera Winfrey and Alicia Keys. Link to comment

Rinh Hallani Posted August 20, 2013 Share #59 Posted August 20, 2013 Heh, some funny names there. Only one I can remember now is an arcanist called Ace Rimmer (from Red Dwarf). I was sorely tempted to whisper him and say "What a guy!" As for trolling, yes, it happens everywhere. I've always chosen RP realms in WoW and, although you may get interrupted from time to time, non-RPers usually leave you alone. On the odd occasions someone does bother me, I ignore them and perhaps go afk for a few minutes. They quickly lose interest if you don't respond. Worst case is I move the RP elsewhere and set the troll on ignore. Link to comment
LiadansWhisper Posted August 20, 2013 Share #60 Posted August 20, 2013 Oh, I just remembered one. Hanali Celanil. Yes, folks, the Tel'Quessir Goddess of Love made an appearance on humble Balmung. And in case you are wondering, she was, indeed, an Elezan. Link to comment
Raccoon Posted August 20, 2013 Share #61 Posted August 20, 2013 Oh, right, a less offensive name was Kyo Sohma, a Miqo'te in Gridania. The hair wasn't orange enough sadly. Kyo Sohma's a character from the anime series Fruits Basket that turned into a cat when he got emotional. Link to comment

Kyo Sohma's a character from the anime series Fruits Basket that turned into a cat when he got emotional. I saw a Kuro Sith, which was a Miqo'te female. SO I'm not sure if it was coincidence or not, but Kuro is the name of the Cat Sith from Ao No Exorcist. ...On a side note, Gilgamesh is very hostile. ACCURATE THREAD TITLE FOR THIS. Link to comment
4wheel Posted August 20, 2013 Share #63 Posted August 20, 2013 I saw several My little Pony names. Twilight Sparkle, Rainbow Dash, Lyra Heartstrings, Pip Squeak, and Some Pony. I also saw a Moe Lester, Porsche Monkey, Destroy Optimus, and Anita Bonghit. On-topic: I had fun in Gilga. I rarely saw any real squabbles in shout and I had a good time RP'ing there. Luck of the draw, I suppose. Link to comment
Asyria Posted August 20, 2013 Share #64 Posted August 20, 2013 I totally saw a pink-haired, yellow-ish-skinned (somehwat.. I guess) Miqo'te called Flutter Shy in phase 3. Link to comment
Versillis Capulet Posted August 20, 2013 Share #65 Posted August 20, 2013 We have some trolls on Balmung too, I choose to ignore them mentally and keep playing the game. I have had a few whisper me while I am RPing and fishing in the open; that I should move out of my mom's basement and get a girlfriend. It happens in every community; best thing to do is just push forward and make sure that you don't allow the pve'ers overthrow something as wonderful as your role playing. I personally love the random/non-rp names we see, my husband and I like to sit here and laugh about a few of them. The ones that are sad, are the ones that lack all imagination like a Lalafell named Dwarf Midget but at least we have something to snicker about while rping Link to comment
Graive Elune Posted August 20, 2013 Share #66 Posted August 20, 2013 I choose to personally just ignore trolls, there is a blacklist for a reason. Like everyone is saying, there are trolls and annoyances all over the internet, especially on MMOs. I am on Gilgamesh and this past phase I was sitting out at the Bismark in Limsa with a friend and 5-6 people gathered around and randomly started roleplaying. I wouldn't base an entire server off a few ignorant people. And seeing all this badmouthing about Gilgamesh isn't going to encourage any new players to join it, so I'd just wait till a couple weeks after release to put in your opinion about anything. Link to comment

Tooli Posted August 21, 2013 Share #71 Posted August 21, 2013 The best way to fight the trolls and haters is to make your presence even more pronounced. The worst way is to let them silence you! I think the VAST majority of players want to be immersed in the game. Even if they've not been roleplayers, or are uncomfortable with what they've heard of roleplayers, they will at least enjoy using emotes and entering into some witty in-character banter. I can't tell you how many times I've "/cheer"ed after a guildhest or "/congratulate" when someone gets a loot drop, only to see the other members of the party reply with their own emotes. Sure that's not full-fledged roleplaying, but it is immersive and in-character, and that's how we build a strong community. Does anyone else have similar stories? Link to comment

Desmond Aryll Posted August 21, 2013 Share #73 Posted August 21, 2013 I was surprised at the good humor during dungeons. After a couple of runs I would make sure to give congrats and it was always reciprocated. I think in the end it's just about being cool with others. See a guy with a stupid name? Make a good natured joke about it. It's encouraging how often you get good reactions in this game. Not having too much experience with MMO's, is this normal? Or is it an FF thing? Link to comment

Awww ... an MMO virgin! *pinches cheeks* But it depends. I have seen many people, even myself, respond to "congrats" or the like in games. I think it is a natural response for human beings to do so. I encourage people to do that though. See someone win a nasty fight? /cheer them afterwards. Some might not respond but alot do to it. ..... *pinches Desmond's cheeks again* :cactuar: Link to comment
Moltove Posted August 21, 2013 Share #75 Posted August 21, 2013 Trolls are bad, but old news since the start of the interwebz. While MMOs help you 'escape' and let you put on an anonymous mask, it does make it a bit more personal, as you have a representative body in the game, as they do as well. As been noted, do your best to ignore them. I havn't seen too much of anything this past weekend on Balmung. Once person shouted if anyone was interested in cybering with a ftua Miqo'te. Another remarked on why Balmung "shouldn't be the official rp server" (his words, not mine), but no one said anything about it afterwords. Obviously, he's not in the know of current events, and doesn't realize that no RPer wouldn't do that. I dunno. I do feel for you, but as time goes on, the Trolling seems to get worse in games. But what other people are saying is right-- give it some time after launch and you'll soon find the player base (and trolls) drops off a bit. Gilgamesh may have it a little worse (4chan is home of Anonymous, after all), but it's bound to follow the same pattern. And I'd like to make note that not everyone in these websites are bad, but they do have some serious numbers on them. Just give them some time to settle down. From the start of my RP career years ago I've learned it's just best to not draw attention to yourself if you want to go about peacefully. Any other means may put up a fight, but may end up in your favor as well. Link to comment
