Faye Posted September 20, 2013 Share #26 Posted September 20, 2013 Aysun and Nel Celestine both said it well. The game is still fresh. People are still scrambling to level and flesh out their characters, especially after all the server errors the game experienced at launch. RP is around if you know where to look, but for a while longer it's going be on the backburner for a lot of people who want to level more first. Now's not really the time to be judging RP activity on any server. Link to comment
Dravus Posted September 20, 2013 Share #27 Posted September 20, 2013 Both servers have a lot of role-play, though the quality varies. Balmung tends to take itself more seriously whilst a lot of the role-play on Gilgamesh is tied to what is essentially just a giant ERP circle passed off as 'tasteful entertainment'. There's exceptions, of course - so you'll likely find RP wherever you choose to settle. Link to comment
Aysun Posted September 20, 2013 Share #28 Posted September 20, 2013 Wow... I guess I have bad luck. I tele between cities and try to find RP every 20-30 mins and have even sat in Limsa's inn for hours without sight of RP. In fact I haven't seen anyone RPing since the beginning of P3 CBT. It's weird that others keep seeing it and yet I haven't.. I must be terribly unlucky. S: If you decide to join us after transfers are opened up you are more than welcome Please do not turn this into a recruitment thread. Legitimate reasons for the OP's lack of RP have been given. This isn't something a server transfer will fix. Both servers are in the same state. Link to comment

Reibees Posted September 20, 2013 Author Share #31 Posted September 20, 2013 These threads are just.. bad for everyone. What everyone needs to realize is this game is less than a month old. Everyone, even RPers, is so focused on PLAYING the game. They need to progress to a point where they're comfortable slowing down and RPing more, so that sporadic RP is kind of hard to come by sometimes. It is out there. On Balmung, for sure, as I've seen it, and on Gilgamesh I'm sure it is too. Everyone's just very preoccupied with actually playing the game right now. Please, join an Intermission LS if you haven't already. Look over the RPLSs in the Linkshell section. There are at least three of the Intermission pearls now, due to the massive amount of RPers on Balmung. And there's tons of people that choose not to be in Intermission. We're all over, there's just a lot going on! I feel as if you may have taken this thread a bit personally against Balmung's server as a whole, this wasn't my intent; I was hesitant to remain on it to begin with due to OOC reasons. I am not asking with intent to sabotage Balmung's RP, I am genuinely wondering which is more active because I play MMOS -FOR- RP. The gaming part is a side piece for me when no one's on/actively RPing. I understand for other's it's different, and for others, Balmung's level of activity is plenty, but for me it is not. If it is the fact that servers are still catching up with people leveling instead of Rping, then RP should flesh out more within the amount of time it takes for server transfers to open and I'll remain on Balmung.... but if not, I sadly will be seeking a new server. I have been looking for a LS for some time now and haven't been successful, so I am still looking for one. I apologize if anyone took this badly, that wasn't my intent of the thread. I don't know anyone on Gilgamesh so I figured this was the best location to ask. Link to comment

Something light-hearted and casual or a more in-depth and story driven experience? Ultimately it doesn't matter what server you choose to settle on - both are reasonably active and both are inevitably going to have 'cliques'. Some will be more open to welcoming new faces into their social circles than others, though you'll likely need to take the initiative at times and make it known that you're seeking RP. YesGood Posted September 20, 2013 Share #38 Posted September 20, 2013 I think that we should consider maybe starting a thread for each server with a list of places where our RP tends to happen. As Nahv'ir said, after a spur of the moment sparring match between two of our members, the Grindstone has taken to hanging around out on the bridge in Central Thanalan outside of Ul'dah. A good number of our members so far have been walk-ups who came in, sat down, and watched the fights going on, then brought friends in, which is marvelous. Even if you don't want to join our LS, you're always welcome to come. I, personally, seem to find RP everywhere when I'm running around cities but it's rarely where you might expect it, and as it's been said, it really depends on the time. At night most of our people are on so we're usually doing pretty well. I've seen RP in the guilds in two of the three cities (Limsa and Ul'dah), as well as the Bismarck and even out on the streets in Ul'dah. Again, I propose maybe the LS/FC leaders who have group ups in a regular area might possibly form two solid threads with lists of those places for newer people to stray across them. Not for recruitment purposes but for walk up RP. I don't mean to lock us down in certain areas or carve territories but if anyone has had similar situations as us, we're pretty happy in our spot for now and might move to something bigger to accommodate a larger group in the future. So far, I'm happy to say all my new friends in my LS are open to walk up-- ICly, though, we don't handle people who disrespect our fighters very well, but we're not a bunch of thugs looking to start a fight. I'm sure many if not all of the other LS/FCs out there feel the same way and would love to see their members RPing outside of their groups. Just a suggestion. 1 Link to comment

I think, past the leveling to a certain point thing, as much as I've been advocating walk up versus feeling obligated to join an existing group, I feel that many of the LS/FCs are trying to get their footing still and start some bonds in their respective groups. This might be causing a bit of an issue with members having plenty of free time to walk around and RP with strangers; initially slowing us down even more. Maybe one of the mods could start these threads? We could keep them civil and only list our places so they could be sticky'd for all the new people who join the RPC. *I should stress again that I hope we won't be trying to advertise our groups or pressure anyone to join us. In my short time lurking/joining I've seen the question of "Where can I find walk-up RP and how can I join?" pop up almost everywhere. I had/have it myself. I think people can list a particular area your group or character generally hangs out and maybe a blurb about what the group is (probably taken from the Linkshell threads) or the character's personality. Pressuring isn't what we wanna do, but getting some information on what everyone is like certainly can't hurt. Link to comment
Aleister Posted September 20, 2013 Share #43 Posted September 20, 2013 I'm curious. I took a bit of a break from the game because I've been getting no RP and I know no one; but I come back, and the game seems utterly abandoned. I spotted maybe two RPers 'walking' through the city, but no actual RP. Has it all gone the way of 'private clique' RP? With my lack of desire for a forced plot guild/FC, I can't seem to find any RP, whatsoever, even despite approaching. I know a grand number of people who hit 50 and took their leisure time doing so, so I don't imagine the mass populace is still 'leveling'... So, my question here is, is Gilgamesh more active with OPEN, PUBLIC RP than Balmung is? I'm trying to find a server I can call home, but atm the game's RP activity is making me question even staying.... I'm gonna give my opinion to your question? I have seen RP in the cities.. Like everyone else said it depends on the time THOUGH I haven't seen a lot which makes me believe sometimes its all in LS (This can be wrong I'm just saying what I believe is where the RP is sometimes) I've only tried to RP twice myself and that kinda went up in flames as I got the silent treatment kinda? Otherwise I've been busy with PvE stuff cause like everyone has said again lol.. The game is brand spankin' new and people wanna progress through the game. Also.. Someone said something about RPing outside the city cause of 'muggers'? Non-RPers? That is a silly reason in my opinion.. RP out the cities is great cause of the areas like.. Ceorthas? (God I wanna do some RP up there at some point) But to avoid it cause of non-RPers? Link to comment

This is a prime example of why these threads are not only stupid, but blatantly become a tossing of biased opinions and crap. I'll throw my example here on how to prove this wrong though. There is one key community on the internet known for 'giant ERP circle' type RP. That's a website called Darknest. Go there and look in "Other Game Ads" and tell me what server all the ads for Final Fantasy XIV are for. This is just a prime example that... Hey, guess what, every RP community has this. But don't go waving your elitist bullshit and attacking a full community of RPers because you feel the need to make your own part of the community seem better. I've seen some RP that's not exactly publicly acceptable. I've also seen some amazing RP come about. Most of my RP has been random, found in the world with people I didn't know before on Gilgamesh. Long standing, serious RPs are starting. Serious, extremely well written characters. Development and just exciting things are happening everywhere. As for this thread? It should be closed. Because this is just stupid. Elitists and biased opinions will attack it in waves. If you're not sure where you want to settle? Roll a toon on both servers and stay where you feel more welcome. That's what I did and I brought a lot of people with me. Simple as that. I have a bias for Gilgamesh, but that's because of the reactions I've gotten. If you want to shoot your mouth off, talk shit or the like? Take it elsewhere. I don't care to hear this shit and it's not needed in a community of AMAZING people. Both servers are amazing in their own ways. Don't agree? Then you're looking through rose colored glasses to the one you prefer. And if this kind of blow up gets me in trouble? I really don't care. It needs to be said. Do what you find fun. Get your money per month out of it. Make friends, write good stories and promote the good and not the bad. Peace, love and fluffy kittens. 2 Link to comment
The_Wanderer Posted September 20, 2013 Share #45 Posted September 20, 2013 For what it's worth, I originally rolled on Gilgamesh when the servers opened up, and then when Balmung opened up (I went there since from what I read it was had more RP'ers), and was disappointed that I didn't see a single RP from level 1 -10 and the RP LS I was in (#3 or #4) had a whole bunch of people who didn't talk when I tried to engage them, which was totally different from my experience in Gilgamesh. Of course, this was only a two-day sample, so I'm sure I might have just had bad timing. But I've been having a blast since I went back to Gilgamesh and haven't looked back! I'm a person who RP's as they level, so Gilgamesh has been working great for me. Try both servers and get a feel for it, the major cities are a good place to try it. I've been having lots of open world RP (because that's all I do). If you're willing to walk away from a game because you're not content with the RP, then I would say having an existing leveled character matters less in the end. Also leveling in this game is pretty easy, so you won't really be that disadvantaged either way. Link to comment

Responding this way doesn't do anything but propagate the issue. There are much more civil ways of responding to what J'hared said than this. I don't agree with it either, but putting people down doesn't help anything and several other people have said this exact same thing already. Try to consider that sometimes when any of us posture this way it only gives other, less-experienced people the mindset that they should do it also. True as it may be, perhaps a slightly different wording might have been better. Tact. Link to comment

YesGood Posted September 20, 2013 Share #49 Posted September 20, 2013 Your experiences might have been bad due to coincidence, maybe they weren't long term enough, maybe what you saw is the exception rather than the rule. Very likely any of those, especially the last, is the case. What you may, intentionally or otherwise, be doing is skewing people's perception of the place before they have a chance to go there and they might have a great time and really enjoy it-- clearly that's the case for many of these people who love Gilgamesh and want to be there. It doesn't take sugar-coating or beating around the bush to say 'I saw a lot of this so I decided to stay on Balmung' without all the unnecessarily derogatory trappings. If you -don't- care what your opinion does to other people, then why do you even bother saying anything about it? Clearly you must be trying to look out for the well-being of other RPers who might decide to go to Gilgamesh by warning them of what they -might- see, but doesn't it defeat the purpose if you end up discrediting yourself by presenting your opinion in such an abrasive way? Dravus Posted September 20, 2013 Share #50 Posted September 20, 2013 Was what I said controversial? Sure, I'm willing to admit that - but I'm not the sort of guy who sugar coats my words or beats around the bush. I'm going by what I've seen for myself and I did suggest that not everyone on the server was guilty of what I mentioned. And yet what you said was a blatant show of disrespect to the community overall. You are taking a minority and blaming the majority for it. I am calling you wrong, not controversial. Someone clearly blinded by their bias and elitist appearing attitude. In short. Your opinion was neither warranted nor grounded in fact. Once more a worthless spewing of drivel to make your point seem more valid and demean a group of people. It has nothing to do with 'elitism', nor did I ever tarnish the community as a whole as being guilty of what I spoke of. Please spare me the hyperbole, personal attacks and drama. I'm here to indulge in debate and discussion, not suffer abuse from posters who can't seem to reign in their temper. It's always baffled me when someone tries to paint another poster as 'mean' or 'elitist' only to launch a barrage of insults (thinly veiled or otherwise) in their direction. Go ahead and disagree with me, just stop with the borderline abuse, please. @Siobhan: I see where you're coming from. As I said, I just tend to say things as they are rather than wrapping them up in a nice little bundle. If that doesn't sit well with some people, that's fine by me - I'm not here to indulge in a popularity contest or carefully tread over eggshells. If I see a problem that I perceive as large enough to be notable then I tend to tackle it and address it rather than sweep it under the rug. I've made my peace with that rubbing a lot of people the wrong way in role-playing communities, though I strive to remain on the side of the terms of service and code of conduct - thus I don't go around insulting people for having a different experience or opinion than my own. I'm also guilty of finding it fascinating to discuss the more complex issues in the role-playing community. Again, I post because I enjoy a good debate. I thank you for being mature about it, even if we might not agree on certain matters. Link to comment
