I Have Made A Terrible Mistake: When to Just Reroll

You ever have those moments of clarity where, way too late, you realize there's something you just hate about your character? It's your own damn fault and you know it, but now that one little detail is gnawing at you hatefully. Like their real life counter parts, you realize far too late that tattoo looks stupid. And now you're gonna be wearing it for the rest of the game...

I was up in the air about just rerolling when I realized that my hair color looked much less flattering in game than it did in the character creator. I was only about level 12 when I noticed this and just kinda shrugged it off. Besides, I would get a free appearance reset after a month, I could eat the tacky way-too-silver look for a while before changing it to a bit more organic looking shade.

So I kept playing, attacking content ravenously to make the sprint to end game, because gods be damned, it looked like fun! I was already level 28 and comfortably entrenched in the community when it dawned on me for the first time that 'x' is pronounced 'she'... not 'zee'. I don't know why I thought that. It's my own damn fault for not double checking, but suddenly I was much less pleased with my name. But it's okay, I'll get to redo all of that in another week, I'll just-

Oh... there's no name changes in FF14... well then. I guess I'll tough it out. It's just a name. Gods know I didn't pick my blood elf priest's name with the long haul in mind, but I've grown rather fond of it over the years despite its objective awfulness.

Pushing 34 and no where near the end of the story mode I had a sudden revelation of how I'd like to just throw the whole thing out and start over. Ball it up, throw it in the garbage, and crank out a pretty new streamlined version. You know, like an Apple product. I'd only recently been more frequent on the RP scene, and my yanking and re-tooling the character shouldn't change anything related to anyone else's story or RP.

So here's my question to you: When do you just cut your losses and start over?

Link to comment

Well, first month of subscription gets an item that you can change your gender, religion, appearance and such.

As for name, there will be a name change service in the future.

As for cutting my losses? I only do it if I don't have a certain amount of time with a given character. If it's a short time (say 10 hours or less), I can recoup lost time. Sure it sounds like a lot of time, but for MMOs it isn't.

I've played a lot of MMO's over the years and there hasn't been a single one where I haven't ended up starting from scratch at some point after piecing together a concept for my initial character. I'd even go so far as to suggest that it's a natural process - most of the players I know have done it at one point or another, even if they were completely smitten with a particular name, class, race or gender.

In FFXIV I've rerolled twice so far. My first attempt at Theodric left me unsatisfied with his surname and appearance, so despite getting him to level thirty nine I ended up creating a different character instead. I made J'hared - a Miqo'te and whilst I still play him from time to time he didn't end up gripping me as much as I thought he would. At level twenty eight I ended up remaking Theodric again and have since found my ideal niche in this game.

You could wait for a name change function to be added, though it may be easier to just start from scratch. Just find someone you can trust to help you send all your gil and items to your new character and you'll have the benefit of being a little richer when you get your new character to the point your original guy was at.

AhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA*snort*HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA... hoo oh boy... ... ...pfffftHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA!!

Whew. But in all seriousness, the cutoff for shrugging and re-rolling is different for everyone. Me personally, sometimes I'll make a RP character, decide after 30 levels or so that I just don't like him/her, and roll a new one, but if I like the OOC play style of that character's class I might keep them around and still play them from time to time anyway. I have a Death Knight in WoW that was started as a RP toon and is now used for just playing a Death Knight because they're fun to play.

TL;DR Do what feels right, man. It's your character, and your story.

Oh my I have been in this situation way too many times! Unfortunately, if I had already gotten to 30, there is no way I'm rerolling now in this game. Leveling takes pretty long and by then I've invested too much in my job and or classes. If you're not feeling a guy sometimes I suggest switching over to an alt for a few days. This happens with me when I spend 100% on my time on the same character. I started critizing my main like Should I have named her Loki?

But I don't like her nose. Which really, they don't have sliders and or much customization in FFXIV (Sorry but it's the truth compared to other games) so you're always going to find someone that looks somewhat similar to you anyway. I've had this most recently with my Rogedlyn. I LOVE her look but her name Chasing River seemed unique at first. Until I met five other Rogedlyn with the name River in it. Then all of a sudden I felt less unique. I really love that race and want to play it with a passion and I've got my warrior up to level 15 already. Do I scrap it or do I just tought it out and learn to love the name again? Make it my own?

It's a decision that's ultimately up to you. If you want to spend the time and effort to add everyone to you're friend list again (they really need to fix the whole you have to be online thing, man is that making it even more complicated!).  Honestly I'm still debating on my Roe, and wondering if I should change her name to Chasing Sunrise. Also still waiting on that appearance change kit. Do you know if you can only change one character or all of them? I guess I have yet to hit a month because I haven't got one yet.

I was mostly asking to see what kind of responses I'd get. For the time being I'm re-leveling another Arcanist before I'm locked into the 'one character per server' limit. (I'm not gonna pay $2 for 7 more slots. I'm not going to use them I only want one character!)

The thing is, even though X'chail's already pushing past 30 I don't know if that's a really difficult milestone. I had an alt on Gilgamesh I play very rarely and he's past 20 in both his main class and two of his professions. I'd say I've spent about a third as much time on him. The problem for me is having to slog through the story quests again. I'm not looking forward to it, since I find the story tedious, haha.

The wonders of skip scene.

I say, if you dont like him, remake him. Its a game, it isnt going anywhere.

I JUST did a re-roll with my character actually, X. However, it wasn't due to cosmetics but personality disputes I had with certain characters I was playing and the way I was playing them as.

Fortunately (though unfortunately T.T), I haven't RPed with many people so I avoided continuity issues with the help of the people I have RPed with, but more importantly I was able to spin it in a way that worked out rather well.

Is it PURELY cosmetic? If there aren't any screen shots RP wise of your character, then personally I would wait until they allow you to change your look up to however you see fit only for the fact that you will not have lost your levels, gear, hard work, etc. However, if you can't change your name EVER, then I WOULD re-roll because I know how irksome that can be.

Hope that helps?

Dude, I use all 8 slots and I have rerolled. Several times.

In GW2, I completely dumped a level 80, fully geared character, and started her over.

For me there's no cutoff point - if I'm unhappy with a character, I'll reroll (or pony up for a name/cosmetic change if the option is available). The amount of effort put into leveling &c is second to being happy with the character's looks, name and so forth.

But that's just me. If you think you can manage your character's unfitting name until the name change is available, give it a shot. If not, 30ish or so (until around Titan, in the story) isn't that hard to get back to. The only problem would be story dungeons, since finding a group for the earlier ones can be a pain.

Since you're on Balmung, though, feel free to hit me up anytime (Elissa Vermont is my main) for dungeon/primal/leveling help if you do end up rerolling. I can tank up to Haukke Manor and heal up to Halatali, DPS up to Titan. Or I can just level (I have 2 alts past 30, one past 20, and the others all need to catch up, so it's like... a banquet of leveling buddies).

As many have said, the cut off is different for everyone. I tend to be a slow leveler because I enjoy the crafting aspects of the game and spend just as much time leveling up the crafting and harvesting jobs as I do anything else. For me, I would have a very difficult time rerolling my character at 25. Not because of her main job, but all the crafting I have put into her and also the dungeons....I hate PUG's and having to do those dungeons to progress the story is painful when you don't know a lot of people yet.

Like others have said, sometimes it takes a bit to find the one that hits home with you. My first character was a Keeper of the Moon Miqo'te, and while I still have her. I haven't really played her since the first week. I fell in love with my Elezen, however, and that was truly unexpected for me. Sometimes, characters just grab a hold and demand all your attention. And if this character isn't doing that for you then it may be a good idea to reroll them. Better to do it now then later on when you have hit 50.

The name is actually worse than the appearance. I was just bothered by the fact that the shake of hair I picked originally looked more natural in the character creator, but after running around Limsa in the glaring sunlight all the time it looked too... way over-bleached. I wanted him to be distinctly blond, but in the direct sunlight in Limsa its just this horrible glaring white mess.

I've also been second guessing his eye color. I love heterochromatic eyes, and I was excited that this wasn't just something I could do, but fit into Miqo'te lore! But The mix I went with was sorta jarring I think. Light Green/Dark Yellow thinking of traditional cat eye colors.

But the worst is the name. Because people truncate it as X. Which is pronounced 'she'. Now... let's pretend we're all sitting in Ventrillo doing dungeons with your guildies... And for kicks, half of the party are girls. It's confusing and frustrating and totally emasculating ;;

30 seems to be my cut-off, at least for a one time thing anyway, since i remade Taijha on Gilgamesh when she was already 30 on Balmung. Usually 20 is my cutoff for a character.

Also, welcome to OCD-land. I have NO idea how many times I have made a character in other games, got through the tutorial and HATED the look of her... so back to the chargen and back through the tutorial. SWTOR, I think I went through Hutta 10 times. Last time through I swore I wouldnt go through the planet again, and then I quit for good. xD

Question is (for me at least. I was too lazy to read other posts to find the answer or not. Sorry for being a lazy bum xD), CAN you change the name eventually? If yes, then it depends on HOW much it bothers you. If you can't stand looking at it for more than a couple of minutes, go ahead and re-roll. Leveling up in this game is hardly a challenge.

Also, like someone said you might want to incorporate it to your story, which would work rather well. I imagine you introducing your character by the way YOU want it to sound by spelling it out, and undoubtedly people will accidentally/purposely type in the way your name is typed above your head and you can RP it as them pronouncing it incorrectly if they are saying your name (OR they may take the road of typing it out the way you want it to be typed out, meaning their character remembers how to pronounce your name). Then EVENTUALLY, when the name change is available, boom. Most will start typing your name the way it officially looks like--unless they are RPing a character who likes to piss your character off xD

The ONLY problem I see with the above way IF you chose to RP it out like that is IF you change your name to something DRASTICALLY different.

If NO name change is available, cut your loss. You making a thread about it already gives you the answer you need, regardless of the fact that you were looking for just opinions, aye?

I can speak as one who has rerolled... literally... dozens upon dozens of times.

In fact, in WoW I rerolled my hunter after reaching level forty about ten times alone. "Oh, I don't like this name." "Oh, poo, this face is horrible." "Hang on a second... there's a lighter green eye color on this other face?"

The only thing that finally slowed me down was the barbershop and even then I had a tendency to reroll. I would get to something like 70 and start from scratch-- Got me a good amount of gold from doing it but otherwise it was a pain in the posterior. I look at Siobhain now and I think I should've just freaking made her short because every other female Roe like a foot taller than her anyway. Why did I make her so muscular? I gave her man-hips! I should've just given her long hair and been done with it.

I'm going to hold out two more weeks for Fantasia to fix all these problems ICly and OOCly (sorry but Sio's gonna get shorter OOCly and buy a magical hair serum that works a little too well ICly) but it doesn't fix the common question I get in PMs.

"Why the Sea Wolf name?" Admittedly, there's no reason a Hellsguard can't have a full, traditional Roegadyn name-- it's just that the majority of them opt not to based on their culture. I likely won't reroll just to fix my name as then I'll be sitting on a Fantasia I may never use and I've gotten a lot of fancy stuff I don't feel like farming again-- but if I had more time like I used to I would.

For me? Personally? If I don't like a character, I have to reroll. There's no question about it; I have to. Rinh originally looked different, with a different surname, but it got under my skin and I started over despite having most of my friends levelling way past me in the open beta. Same with alts. If I'm not feeling it, nope, they're gone. T'yareth is the only one to stick around after 4 or 5 alts and even she's been made over with fantasia.

So if you're not happy and it really gets to you, just start over. Level 50 isn't that far away.

I am thinking about rerolling already.  I have only had this first RP character for several hours, and she is only level 6 or 7 at the most.  I love everything about her design and character so far, I just regret not putting her in the Balmung server.  I refreshed the worlds a few times when creating my character, and when Gilgamesh finally became available, I jumped at the chance.  But I feel like I won't have as many RP opportunities in Gilgamesh as I can have in Balmung.  So I will probably reroll my poor Lorielle so that I can try to get her into Balmung xP

There's no reason not to maintain characters on both servers. Even with an entry level account you can have a total of 8 characters, one per server. I'd advocate trying both out, but I wouldn't let the fact that Balmung appears more populous sway your opinion. You really can't go wrong between the two.

THEN AGAIN I am on Balmung. As if that weren't reason enough, right? ;)

I actually maintain characters on Balmung, Gilgamesh, and Odin and play them all relatively equally.

Ahaha, you don't have to talk to me about re-rolling in WoW. I've trashed things that are level 88 because "Nah, I'm bored with this character concept." But I've DONE all the WoW content before. It is done. It is completed, 100%. I can run a new character 1-90 in less than a week if I so chose, and I have, with the same sort of auto-pilot function I use to drive to the sandwich shop. I just sorta blink and it's done :b

I've only ever purchased one race change, because the character himself had some rare, difficult to obtain items. This was a decision I almost immediately regretted and every time I log onto him think "That was stupid. I could have just made a different one."

Lmao. I leveled a Night Elf rogue to 90... complete with full skinning and LWing (which is a biotch.)

Then I decided that I didn't want to RP on the Alliance side anymore.

 Leveled a Belf Rogue.

I got that 1-cap pretty decently too, I think.

Yeah, I was having a hard time with my raiding guild on Illidan, so I kinda gave them all a virtual bird and stormed off to an RP server to play Alliance just to spite them. I bum-rushed a Worgen Druid to level 90, maxed Inscription, and RP'd him as a letter-carrier. Then after like, a week I realized I just couldn't play Alliance side. I just couldn't get over my constant urge to kill everything I saw... So, two weeks of my life just pfft, out the door... which is basically how much time I've invested into FF14 so far.

Oh, are you able to have a character of the same name in two different servers? O_o if so, I might have to do that.  I figured there was some sort of naming restriction if a name was already being used xD

No, there is just two different kinds of payment plans. One is 12.99 for one character per server and the other is 14.99 for 8 characters per server :)

Also, the $14.99 plan gets discounted the longer you sub for. If you go for the 6 month option, it's only $12.99 per month (and you get all the vet rewards up front).

Nope! Names are specific only to one server. :)
