Asytra Posted September 4, 2010 Share #1 Posted September 4, 2010 Anyone else get this problem? It kinda blows cause I can't mess with my GrooveShark stuff while I'm playing. :\ Link to comment
Trizzip Posted September 4, 2010 Share #2 Posted September 4, 2010 Didn't XI do this also unless you (allegedly) had the Windower....at least until they came out with an official windower? Link to comment
Rhio Posted September 4, 2010 Share #3 Posted September 4, 2010 This is not a problem. I mean, it is, but the game is designed to do this. It's not a bug. Windowed mode is your only real solution for it, I'm sorry to say. Link to comment

Windowed mode is your only real solution for it, I'm sorry to say. Yep yep. Does it for everyone. It sucks. Either we play fullscreen and don't alt-tab ever or we play windowed. Alternatively, and this is a question for the computer-savvy folks, if I had 2 monitors, could I play fullscreen on one and have other stuff on the other without causing this kind of problems? Koti Nexus Posted September 4, 2010 Share #5 Posted September 4, 2010 It has done that since closed beta. You just have to go in the configure and play on windowed if you want to browse webpages or do stuff in the background. Link to comment

Windowed mode is your only real solution for it, I'm sorry to say. Why would the game be designed to crash when you alt-tab? :? SE does do really dumb things sometimes....though. I use two screens and multitask a lot but I despise windowed for gaming... And no Asyria... if you are fullscreen on one screen Windows automatically alt-tabs you if you switch to the other screen. It's infuriating and it's a "feature" of Windows. Link to comment
Asyria Posted September 4, 2010 Share #7 Posted September 4, 2010 I don't supposed it can be disabled? ^^; Link to comment
Asytra Posted September 4, 2010 Author Share #8 Posted September 4, 2010 I don't supposed it can be disabled? ^^; I haven't found a way... :\ I wanted to find a way to run two different fullscreen apps. Most notably, full screen video on one screen and a game on the other. Sometimes I watch the MST3k channel on Justin.tv when I'm just doing something repetitive in an MMO... Link to comment
Rhio Posted September 4, 2010 Share #9 Posted September 4, 2010 I use two screens and multitask a lot but I despise windowed for gaming... As do I. Windowed gaming is the bane of my existence. I really despise it, I dislike the fact that the only way I can get certain things done in FFXI is via windowing, and I really hated that STO had a nasty glitch that would occasionally leave you with a sticky "alt" key if you alt-tabbed out. (Alt-Enter would change to windowed mode, you see.) On the bright side, since I was windowed earlier tonight whilst cataloging the Gridania vendors, I can confirm that the windowed mode for XIV is not that bad. Fairly smooth and usable. I think I could get used to it. Link to comment
FreelanceWizard Posted September 4, 2010 Share #10 Posted September 4, 2010 I've actually done some DirectX programming, and the specific error you get when you Alt-Tab out is indicative of a bug. When you Alt-Tab away from a full screen DirectX program, its drawing surface is invalidated and it can no longer render. The "standard" response to this is basically to pause rendering until you can acquire the surface again. An alternative approach, which is what EQ2 does, is to enter windowed mode automatically when you lose focus, in which case you can continue rendering as a windowed surface is never invalidated. Not doing either of these may be a design choice, but it's a bad design choice. Hopefully they'll get around to fixing it, or will try to get into Games for Windows Live and will be forced by Microsoft to fix it. Link to comment
Tadir Posted September 4, 2010 Share #11 Posted September 4, 2010 I just run it windowed at full resolution. That way it takes up my full screen anyway. Link to comment

Shamadconde Posted September 4, 2010 Share #13 Posted September 4, 2010 They did it for FFXI so people couldn't hack the game. It happened anyway but I'm pretty sure it isn't a bug, just the way they designed the game. Link to comment
Vareal Posted September 4, 2010 Share #14 Posted September 4, 2010 It also likes to crash more often while in full screen, unless they fixed that with the latest update. *afraid to try* Link to comment
FreelanceWizard Posted September 4, 2010 Share #15 Posted September 4, 2010 I've been completely stable in full-screen mode, which is good. I use a GTX 470 with the 257.21 drivers. And hey, if I wanted to hack the game, I have lots of ways to do that that don't require me to Alt-Tab; no real hacker is going to be deterred by such a minor setback, especially since windowed mode gets around it. I stand by my statement that this is a silly decision on SE's part, and they should really consider it a bug. Link to comment
Shamadconde Posted September 4, 2010 Share #16 Posted September 4, 2010 Does your AV keep popping up? Anything that requires attention from you will crash the client. That's the main reason the Windower was made. And people wanted to see things that you couldn't otherwise. Now that I think about it, FFXI STILL does that in fullscreen! Link to comment
Rikitiki Posted September 5, 2010 Share #17 Posted September 5, 2010 Stupid question... I'm running 1280x720 in Windowed mode, and FFXIV insists on putting a window bar at the top and cutting off the very bottom of my screen. Is there a way to get rid of that window bar, effectively making FFXIV a fullscreen app you can alt-tab out of? Link to comment
Freyar Posted September 5, 2010 Share #18 Posted September 5, 2010 It would be a good move if SE provided a "borderless windowed" mode. Either way, these problems are something I kind of expected after fighting with FFXI. Link to comment
