To further strengthen account security when playing FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn, players are encouraged to log in using a security token or software token.

These security devices generate one-time passwords, which remain effective for only a fixed period of time and become invalid once the user logs in, offering protection against spyware such as key logging programs. Using a one-time password in combination with your Square Enix ID and password will offer greatly strengthened security for your account.

In-Game Bonus for One-Time Password Users

As of patch 2.2, when logged into the game with a one-time password, you will have the option to designate one aetheryte of your choice as a free destination. Teleporting to your free destination will incur no gil fee. Moreover, you may change your free destination as many times as desired.

* The free destination is only valid for Square Enix accounts with a registered one-time password.

* In the event your one-time password has been deactivated, teleporting to your destination will incur a gil fee. Furthermore, your free location cannot be changed while your one-time password is deactivated.

As a quick and easy way to ensure a safe and secure gaming experience, we highly recommend all users take advantage of the one-time password feature.

So let's see here...Extra security, plus I get a free teleport location I can change at any time at no additional cost?

Other MMOs need to institute similar incentives right now.

There's also a physical token you can use; one came with the Collector's Edition. I believe you can also order physical tokens from the SE online store. It works the same way as the phone version, except it's a little keychain thing that gives you a code when you push a button on it. The lifespan is substantial; my XIV token came with my 1.0 CE, and I have a WoW token that's pushing 6 years now and still working. :)

You know, the timing of this is very convenient considering that someone suggested I should get a ST after explaining a recent-- err, incident.

Will definitely look into this ASAP.

Just checking as I am still a bit confused (my usual state btw):

1) I can generate the one time password on my phone, right, like Kage said?

2) If so, do I use THAT code to log in instead of my usual password?

3) And would I need to generate a new one time password each time I log in?

4) Finally, where do I go to generate this code?

Whew....so many questions. But....must....know....to save.....gil!

You use the code plus your password to log in. On the login screen for XIV, you put the code in the "One-time password" field. The codes change every 30 seconds, so you put in your password, then generate the code, then type it in and log in.

IIRC, the one-time password apps are available in the iTunes and Google Play app stores or you can order a physical token from SE.

1) Yes, its a free app that you download.

2) No, you need to use it in addition to your password.

3) Yes you would, so you'd need to keep your phone around you each time you log in.

4) On....on your phone @@

I must have had this tab open a while without refreshing, ignore the reply ~

I should go into a bit of in-depth explanation, given the questions surrounding these things.

I've had a WoW token for as long as they've been around.  Essentially, what they do (and the reason their batteries last for so long) is to run a mathematical function that neither ends nor repeats.  It figures out digits in six-digit strings at a fixed interval.  When you hit the button on the authenticator, you're seeing where it is in the process.  The six digits that it's "on" is your temporary passcode.

When you log in, FFXIV (or whatever program is authenticating you) will ask for your passcode.  It knows what six digits should be there at the given time you request to log in.  What that means is that, unless someone manages to hack deep into the Square network and pulls your function from there, the only person who can log into your account will be the person with your authenticator, since no one else knows the function.  That means that Johnny McGilseller in Laos can't hack your account with a keylogger even if he knows your password and username, because he doesn't have your authenticator to know what the six digit code is at.

So essentially, yes, I definitely recommend getting them.  They're not just another layer of security, they're practically invincible to your common, everyday hacker because they would have to be either deep enough into Square's system to know your code for the moment or they'd have to be able to hijack you once you're in.  I know that I've never been hacked in WoW despite the long time I've played, mostly because of my authenticator (and because I don't torrent or do anything equally stupid).

It works on the login from the launcher menu, where it asks your name, password, and one-time use password.  That'll be where the code goes.  I'd recommend everyone get one if you're going to be investing any appreciable time into the game.  Mine will probably arrive after my new heat sink fan.

I hate when I order from Amazon.com and everything shows up except for one essential component.  Of course that will come on the very last day we expect it to arrive.  :frustrated:
