  1. I thought I recognized that art style (and the grumpy Iantoh), nice seeing you over here. This is Emily from TSW.
  2. Poor mountaineers can still dress up in flashy clothes. 16th century Swiss mercenaries wore the same puff and slash clothes, fancy hats, and bling as their German, French, and Italian counterparts. Wool was a major trade commodity for centuries so it wouldn't be surprising if there wasn't a thriving wool trade to bring in food and luxuries (at least for the upper classes).
  3. In fairness to a lot of people, the Ul'dah that's presented in the main quest looks pretty nice, but that's because we're interacting with the very top layer of society and not the dystopian hellhole that is probably life for the bottom 20% or so of society. As in every other IP, most players never look past the main narrative and delve into the implications of the the lore.
  4. I can imagine Ul'dah having some form of debt peonage, given its focus on money and hyper-capitalist nature. Not slavery, exactly, but you're not allowed to quit your job until your debts are paid off and since you get paid in scrip that's only good at the company store or are strongly "encouraged" to use the shops your boss owns the odds of getting out of debt are slim.
  5. A slightly belated St. Patrick's day with the very talented UCD Choral Scholars zxjvNUNXhkU -zlUEhxDDhg u2BZEp8BH94
  6. Emma tries to avoid stand up fights whenever possible in favor of lying, misdirection, running away, looking harmless, or letting someone else handle the rough stuff. While she has few moral qualms it is her opinion that fights and dead bodies attract too much attention. If forced to fight she relies on her knives, speed, and an assortment of dirty tricks learned growing up on the mean streets of Ul'dah. As an amateur mage she will mix in the occasional spell, usually when her opponent least expects it.
  7. Ex-hooker robs employer and goes on a roadtrip.
  8. Thanks so much for the information, you all. I was fairly sure that was the case, based on what I was and wasn't finding, but it's nice to have confirmation.
  9. Hi there, I'm Theryl and I'm dipping a toe into FFXIV (on Balmung, once the transfer goes through). I've been playing MMOs for over 10 years and RPing in them almost as long. My experience includes WoW, SWTOR, AoC, GW2, TSW, and ESO and probably a few more that didn't last long enough to remember. My appearance here is entirely the fault of several friends from TSW who I'll be hooking up with to do ... stuff we haven't figured out yet. I have a habit of playing snarky rogues and amoral mages of various flavors. In RL I work a boring desk job that is currently draining most of my creativity so Miss Placeholder is probably going to be one of those (or possibly both). Since we're talking character concepts, I have some lore questions I haven't been able to answer, yet. 1) I'm looking for a slum, the kind of place with hookers, junkies, and guys offering you a great deal on stuff that fell off the back of a wagon. In short, the kind of place where a girl with few scruples could scrape out a a living. Pearl Street in Ul'dah looks promising and it seems like Lomnisa should have something similar but I'm open to other ideas. 2) I'm looking for more information on magical training. In theory, the various guilds seem to control most of it, but are there other, unofficial sources available? Hedge witches, heretics, failed members, the old drunk down on the corner who knows a few things? Given the number of mages it seems likely that someone would be doing a little illicit training on the side. 3) Which leads to the subject of magical regulation. Do the various governments require guild membership, is it more akin to organized crime ("No one does magic in dis town wit' out guild say so."), or is it basically a free for all? I'm guessing the last, given there doesn't seem to be much government outside the cities.
