  1. I'm in the UK so that would be around 1am for me, which is a shame; but thanks for letting me know.
  2. This sounds very interesting. Can I ask what time zone you'd expect most of the roleplay to happen between members?
  3. It seems you've put a deposit down but I've noticed you're from the UK. You can still order online from Game - http://www.game.co.uk/en/final-fantasy-xiv-a-realm-reborn-collectors-edition-229833?pageSize=20&categoryIdentifier=348108&attributeName1=Catalog_GameSalesCatalog_EN_GB&attributeValue1=4294963471 I ordered my copy last weekend.
  4. Quick update, myself and katattax are discussing how to get this Linkshell setup and running once phase 4 of the beta allows us to. They'll be a post sometime in the next few days, hopefully, in the Linkshell Hall forum.
  5. An SSD will give better performance than a traditional HDD on any application that is loading data from disk past the initial programme load. To give you some idea of my experience of PCs, I built my first one based on an motherboard using an Intel 80286 processor in 1987. However there is of course a trade off, the per Gigabyte cost of an SSD is much greater than a HDD. Also SSDs are typically much lower capacities than HDDs because of the cost. I use an SSD for my operating system and apps that I want to load as quickly as possible. For games, because they can take up a significant amount of space I found a compromise. Seagate 750GB Momentus XT Hybrid Thin SSHD There's lots of review and technical stuff about this drive if you want to research it but in summary. It is a 750GB HDD with an 8GB SDD integrated into it. The hard drive monitors what files (including parts of files) you access frequently and keeps copies of those on the SSD, so they load at SSD speed. Now 8GB doesn't sound like a lot, but even with a game like FFXIV ARR (which is taking 7.2GB on my drive) only a small percentage of that is probably being access frequently.
  6. For the first three pages of this thread I was worried (not really  ) that I was going to be the oldest by a mile. So thank you to .. and I'll be 47 at the end of this month. I think my sig sums up my view on life.
  7. Welcome, I'm quite new myself and they seem a friendly bunch here. As for 'antiquated' I'd say you were a young whipper-snapper in my book. I started with Basic Dungeons and Dragons before moving on to Advanced D&D 2nd Edition about the age you started; however for me that was nearly 35 years ago.
  8. As has been mentioned previously this Link Shell is OOC, however to answer your question these are my thoughts on how an IC Link Shell (or IC Free Company chat channel) might work. Feel free to use and/or adjust to suit your needs if you wish. To join a Link Shell a character needs to be given an item by the owner, or a designated member, of the Link Shell. This item could be said to be a magical shell that is attuned to the person it is given to so only their voice activates it. When you talk into the shell the words can be heard coming from every other shell, and vice versa you can hear from your shell whatever is said into any of the other shells When you say 'Hello' into the channel you are signally you're actively listening to your shell (logged on, come back from AFK, etc.) having just woken up. Perhaps you carry it on a chain around your neck to make it easier to hear, or perhaps it is small enough to be an earring. When you say 'Bye' into the channel you are signally you're no longer listening to your shell (logging off, going AFK, etc.) as you're putting it in your backpack because you don't want to make any noise that could alert the bandits nearby, etc. The above guidelines give some interesting opportunities for roleplay, for example: If someone asks a question to someone else who was talking on the channel only a few minutes ago but that person doesn't now respond yet hasn't said 'Bye' there could be some concern that something has happened to that person. Perhaps a search/rescue party needs to organize.
  9. Just to make sure it's all clear. The Link Shell will be out-of-character. My understanding is that a Link Shell is limited to 128 members. The membership of the Link Shell is controlled. No random person can join, a character needs to meet the Owner (or any designated member) who can give out the Link Shell item for someone to join. Each character can join up to 8 Link Shells. A Link Shell in FFXI was the equvilant of what a guild is in other games, however in FFXIV it is only a chat channel. In FFXIV a Free Company is the equvilant of a guild. It's purpose is to allow players to talk to do things such as: Arrange in-character meet ups Ask game mechanic or lore related questions To ask for assistance with quests or arrange groups It isn't intended for general chit-chat as we'd like to avoid too much immersion breaking text scrolling on the screen All of the above is open for discussion.
  10. Yes I would join. I was suggesting the creation of an EU roleplayer Link Shell in the EU Roleplayers thread. To avoid multiple threads sort of covering the same idea perhaps there needs to be a new thread specifically titled "EU Roleplayer Link Shell" or something similar. I think the idea behind the Link Shell should be to allow roleplayers playing EU times (GMT to GMT+2/+3 perhaps) to keep in touch for roleplay opportunities and general assistance, so an OOC channel. Then if people are asked to post in that thread if they want to join it would give an indication of how many are interested.
  11. I definitely think this is a good idea. I haven't tried to look through every thread to see if there are discussions about roleplayers in general or EU roleplayers in particular having plans to keep in touch via one or more Link Shells. However, unless anyone knows better I'll start a thread about this for EU roleplayers.
  12. Another EU (UK specifically) roleplayer here. Received by beta invite a couple of days ago and have to say that in my view the game is a lot more playable and enjoyable than the original release. I've not decided which server to play on yet, perhaps I'll create a character or two on both Balmung and Gilgamash. I'm likely to go where ever the largest, or just large if more than one server, EU roleplay community ends up. I must admit to have some concerns due my experiences playing EQ2 on the Antonius Bayle (RP) server which was NA based; so if one of the EU labelled servers has the largest / a large roleplay community I may end up there. Despite being a legacy player I only played the first inclusive month and don't think I have a character I can continue with, even if I did I'm going to start fresh.
