  1. Hey there, and welcome! You can absolutely use your main character for role-play if you wish. The point is to have fun, and if you're forcing yourself to create and level up a new character when you don't feel like it, you probably won't enjoy yourself very much. Most people simply change their in game status to "Role-playing" (by typing /roleplaying or through "Edit Search Info" in the Party Members menu) when they are actively engaging in role-play, and switch it back to Online (or whatever else suits you) when they return to regular game content. Hope this helps!
  2. Hello, and welcome! When it comes to establishing first contacts, I think you can pretty much go about it any way you like, as long as you're friendly and respectful (out of character, at least). Sure, you can show up at community events or just start talking to people in taverns, but if your character is not an extroverted social butterfly, that might not make sense for you or for them. In that case, like Stahlblyss said, you might want to look at other resources to find like-minded people, potential RP hooks, or even characters yours might have pre-established links with (i.e. maybe they're from the same village/tribe/etc.). Then, if they're interested, you can discuss with the other player and decide what works best for the both of you. No matter how you go about it, for many people, out of character communication is every bit as important as in character interactions. Even a simple /tell like "Hey, you seem interesting, do you mind if I join you?" before you jump in can go a long way. Hope this helps!
  3. Hello and welcome! The restrictions concerning character creation are updated several times a day. Your best bet if you want to create a character on a world which is currently congested is to simply wait and try again in a less busy period; this typically means early in the morning or afternoon, on week days if you're able (though that's not always necessary). You'll rarely see any restriction on, say, a Wednesday morning. Just keep checking when you can, and make sure to save your character appearance in advance to speed things up! If leveling quickly is important for you, you may want to pick a world with the Preferred status for an XP boost. Good luck!
  4. Primals are essentially concentrated aether given a physical form; when defeated, the aether disperses back into the world and the primal's spirit returns to the aetherial realm. If you've completed the patch 2.3 main story quests, you can watch cutscene #2 for "What Little Gods Are Made Of" for the in-game explanation (or watch it on YouTube). As such, it's unlikely that a piece might "break off" and retain its shape on its own after the primal's defeat. However, looking at items obtain from desynthesizing the blade, we can find fire clusters ("A large crystalline manifestation of aetheric fire energy.") and demimateria of the Inferno ("A crystallized mass of residual spiritbond energies transferred to an article of weaponry or armor by the Lord of the Inferno during its creation."). Perhaps these could give you the fiery link you're looking for?
  5. Another thing you may want to keep in mind is that in most cases, as with other types of magic, healers can't just keep casting spells all day without any impact on themselves. These spells require some source of energy, and should they become unable to draw on aether from their surroundings (maybe they overdid it, maybe they're in a hostile environment, etc.), the healer may well end up harming themselves (or others) in their attempt to help someone (see the conjurer quests for an example). Of course, it's entirely up to you to decide how/if you want to play this angle, but I think it could definitely make things interesting.
  6. If you're interested in tavern RP, you can definitely find it in the main cities. Of the three starting ones, Ul'dah seems to be the most popular. If your character likes gambling, the Gold Saucer would also (obviously) be a good place. Many Free Companies also have tavern-type settings and/or hold events in the various housing districts; you can find more information about that on here in the Upcoming Events and Club sections. Other than that, you can also flag yourself for RP in game by editing your search info to encourage people to interact with you.
  7. Hello, and welcome back! As another recently returned player, I'd say Balmung may be best if you used to play there and want to reconnect with other veterans, while Mateus may be better if you want to start anew. Mateus is also more often open to new character creation, and it's currently a preferred server so new characters get an XP bonus. As Elaris said, since both servers are on the same datacenter, characters can visit the other server anyway. I don't recall seeing much RP on Odin in the short time I spent there, but maybe that has changed. As far as I'm aware, Omega is the more popular EU RP server (although many pre-ARR EU players stayed on Balmung).
  8. Some of the most fun and memorable instances of roleplay I've experienced in my many years of gaming happened when a large part of the community worked together to create one global story for everyone to enjoy. It would usually start with several smaller incidents and grow into one large story arc over several months, like a collaborative server-based main story line. I know I haven't been back in game for very long, but I've yet to catch any whiff of something around these lines on either Balmung or Mateus. Am I just not looking hard enough? Do I need to get with the times because stuff like that is sooo 10 years ago? Do people prefer to keep things within their FC or stick to social gatherings? Would you (yes, you!) be interested in taking part in and/or helping make something like this happen?
  9. As far as I know, there shouldn't be any issue with roleplaying a Viera, but I may be biased since I also play one... As related in various wikis, through various characters linked to the Majestic Theater Company, we can learn that Viera have become more common outside their forests in the last "several generations". They may still be considered exotic, but would not be unheard of. As long as you're clear on how and why your character has left the wood, you should be fine. As for astrology, there's always a few ways to make this work, but the easiest would probably be to use the very fact that Viera are uncommon. For a Sharlayan seeker of knowledge, the chance to learn of a Viera's ways and traditions would likely be worth teaching something in return.
  10. I'll be going back to Balmung after all, so I should technically be able to visit on Mateus!
  11. Hello everyone! I recently resubscribed after nearly two years away from the game, and I'm looking for people to play with, both for RP and regular progression (and ideally, both at the same time), so I figured I'd introduce myself. I go by Neiev, but you can also call me Kit. I initially started playing FFXIV when it was relaunched with ARR, so I'm not new to the game itself, but I do have quite a bit to catch up on and no longer have any contacts active in game. I used to be on Balmung, but my main highest level characters are now on Odin, with some others on Siren; I'd totally be willing to move at least one back to one of the main NA RP worlds or to create new ones to play with some nice people. Update: Done — back to Balmung it is! MMORPG background: I first started with WoW shortly after Wrath of the Lich King was released. Other than WoW and FFXIV, I've also played Guild Wars 2, Star Wars: The Old Republic, and dabbled in The Secret World, ArcheAge, Rift and WildStar, among others. I still occasionally play WoW and GW2, but I'm hoping to make FFXIV my main MMO for the time being. RP experience: On and off since 2008-2009, so... around 10-12 years overall? I've always done at least some casual RP in all MMOs, and occasionally some forum RP. Character ideas/info: I haven't quite decided what/who I'll be playing yet, since I've only just returned. My characters are typically not particularly powerful, or if they happen to be, they definitely don't brag about it; I usually prefer playing sidekick/mentor/guide-type characters and assisting others with their stories to being in the spotlight. How did you learn about the coalition?: That was a looong time ago, so I don't really remember. Probably through some other players back then? What kind of a role-player are you aiming to be? (e.g. Light, medium, or heavy): I tend to adjust my IC activity level to match the people I'm playing with; I would love to spend most of my in-game time IC, but I'm also totally fine with casual RP. If I happen to be OOC, I'll gladly go IC if asked or walked up to. However, I don't much care for tavern RP (you usually won't find me there), and I am not interested in ERP or gore. I also strongly prefer in-game RP to forum RP. Anything from real life you're comfortable with sharing? (Work, school, hobbies, etc.): Let's see... I'm in the early stages of starting a business, but current world events have complicated and slowed things. English isn't my first language (French is), but hopefully that shouldn't be a problem. I also use Discord, but I'd rather not share it publicly. Feel free to send me a private message here first if you'd like to add me so I at least know who you are!
  12. A first build can be unnerving, but it's a lot of fun to put everything together yourself, and to get to understand exactly what's in there and how it all works so you can (usually) fix it yourself if something stops working later on. And as a bonus you get to feel proud of yourself for actually building the thing. When I made mine, I didn't have a clue what I was doing either, so I used this guide and found it pretty useful: Newegg TV's How to build a computer (part 2 & 3). When it comes to choosing the parts, MMO-Champion's Computer Setup of the Month (latest here) can give you a clue of what may be worth buying. (Also, relevant sales for Black Friday Weekend are here.) I usually order from Newegg and never had any issue with them. I did hear good things about Tiger Direct, so that may be another place to look. If you're in the US, Amazon can be decent too. You may also prefer to look for local (physical) stores first if that's an option. And of course, you can always share your build plans and ask for opinions before ordering.
  13. I managed to contact the Support Desk from in-game on a JP server, and received the following answer: It doesn't fix anything, but it's good to at least receive some acknowledgement.
