That is awesome! I continue to be amazed by your artwork. Wonderful job! 8-)
  2. Just curious, but were you factoring in the miqo'te ears in the height? For the purposes of our initial observations, I was not including the ears. You said 'significantly' though, so I'm not sure. Also hair adds height as well, and that's something else to be aware of. EDIT: I took another look at our data, and confirmed that what you say is accurate to our observations. What had been done for the sake of determine ranges was max heights rounded up to the next inch/ilm, and min heights rounded down rather than up. As such, there is kind of a +/- 2" difference between minimums and maximums for the purposes of establishing an appropriate range difference between two character. More exact numbers will come when the NDA is lifted and I'll be glad to "show all my work" as it were. This chart is intended to be used as a guideline for what would be reasonable height ranges for characters. It is not exact and rounds down on the low end and rounds up on the high end, but not drastically so. EDITAGAIN: TL;DR version - Heights were rounded up on the tall end and rounded down on the low end based on different comparisons - so the overall ranges will be a bit larger, which in turn means that comparisons between tallest of one race and shortest of another may be skewed - but not by much.
  3. Shadow Sunnybank (gogo alliteration!)
  4. Border looks sweet~ I like how it borrows from the leveplate design!
  5. Another helpful thing you may wish to consider doing - and this is strictly up to the individual RPer - but I have personally found it helpful to keep a file handy (mine is just a simple notepad TXT file on a dropbox so that I may access it if I think of something anywhere). You could even use your wiki page for this I would imagine. But any time your character makes any sort of reference which you as a player might be apt to forget I've found it extremely helpful to jot a note there. For myself this mostly encompasses names of various NPC's from Eva's backstory and a timeline of events - even ones that are seemingly insignificant - that she's alluded to in the past. I don't know that I'll ever need for Eva to tell anyone that her father gave her an enormous, elaborate harp for her 10th nameday or that her mother selected her true name when she was born from a book titled "Fleet's Ward", but having such consistency can be helpful so that you're not floundering to remember something you may have had your character allude to at one point in the past. It's not something one needs to do, but I've personally found it very helpful - especially with the quantity of character journal entries I write. Your mileage may vary~
  6. I don't think many do this, but I've seen enough that do that it's something of a put-off and comes across somewhat Mary Sue. Many of us from 1.0 have many of our jobs leveled up to 50 - in some part because there just wasn't much to do after we'd leveled the jobs we most enjoyed and explored all the content. I don't think that needs to be translated into RP though. I think actual expertise in a particular discipline's nuances usually comes from years of practice rather than a couple weeks of PLing or XP parties. In the RP world when someone is suddenly a master of martial arts one week, and the next week a gifted archer, and the following week excels at black magic - that sort of raises a few red flags for me. Like Rhio said I think it's most realistic to choose one or two points of specialty and then have a few "dabble" things. To give an example (because I love those), Eva is a white mage by profession with some skill, if not expertise exactly, with a lance. If a particular event calls for her to wield an axe I will RP complete and utter ignorance. She thinks they're clumsy weapons and has never even bothered to learn to wield one. That said, my marauder/warrior is level 50 and I understand how to play the job well enough OOC. I just don't need for that to transition into RP for any reason. As a footnote, a few of us are working on a sort of "handbook for RP" - sort of a set of helpful guidelines generally geared towards newer RPers (or seasoned RPers who may be new to the Final Fantasy environment) which we're hoping to post up within the next week or so. Your question has actually given me an idea for a section to add to that, so thank you!
  7. Something like this has already been done and finalized by one of the participants of this group, but we didn't want to take any chances with regards to the NDA and such. I plan to update the OP of this thread with some more information - including that wonderful rendition to accompany the chart - once that has been lifted. I can certainly appreciate how that might be more helpful than the bar chart provided. I will also add that it looks AWESOME and can't wait until we can do that~ I believe I may be adjusting my own character's height somewhat, as well. Thank you for the feedback so far. I'm glad this was worth the effort.

    That's pretty frekkin' sweet!!
  9. S-E finally gave us some specific information so I'll paste here from Myllor's post, further down in this thread: Male Roegadyn 7'0.1" 7'3.4" 7'6.7" Female Roegadyn 6'3.6" 6'9.6" 7'3.7" Male Elezen 6'4.4" 6'7.5" 6'10.2" Female Elezen 6'0.2" 6'3.2" 6'6.1" Male Highlander 6'0.2" 6'3.8" 6'6.8" Female Highlander 5'6.2" 5'11" 6'1.8" Male Midlander 5'6.1" 5'8.9" 5'11.6" Female Midlander 5'2" 5'4.5" 5'7.1" Male Miqo'te 5'2.7" 5'5.4" 5'8.2" Female Miqo'te 4'10.9" 5'1.4" 5'3.8" Male Lalafell 2'10.2" 3'0.2" 3'2.2" Female Lalafell 2'10.2" 3'0.2" 3'2.2" The numbers in each row are what the game regards as minimum, average, and maximum height for each race/gender pairing (and clan in the case of hyur). I'm also leaving Selene's chart since it's still accurate and derives from screenshots rather than observational data:
  10. This is more of an aside, but I felt it was relevant. I'm unfamiliar with the incident in dispute, however many times RPers will be - for whatever reason - enacting their combat/events in a place that is not actually where they are physically located. As we do not always have the luxury of RPing in a bubble, we have often stated that a particular out-of-the-way area is to be treated as a linkshell's private training base, to use an example from my own history. I'm not assuming this was the case, but I just wanted to offer a possible explanation why one might be ignored if involving him-or-herself with RP in progress. A simple explanation that it was not open RP would probably have been more proper, if that was the case. Sometimes it's interesting to try and involve yourself with another group's ongoing RP scenario as it adds a feeling of realism and community to the thing. Other times events are treated as happening within a bubble for some reason or another. To reiterate - because I know someone is going to be all, "zomg that's not what happened!!!" - I make no assumptions about how this transpired but only wanted to offer an alternative viewpoint. I don't really need nor wish to know the details since it seems like a bit of a sour subject anyway.
  11. From my experiences it has usually been left more vague, or to each RPers interpretation perhaps. Nobody really emotes in great detail the spellcasting process unless there's some good reason for it. I have participated in RP where people were training with elemental magic and a bit of freedom was taken with this - conjuring fireballs or such, or creating spouts of water and things of that nature. But I don't think anyone actually emotes the context of the spellcasting process while casting spells, nor do I think there's really any expectation that it's anything out of the ordinary. To give a kind of example, it might be like saying "Eva ties her shoelaces," rather than going into details about taking one shoelace over the other, pulling it through, making a loop, etc. It just normally doesn't need to go into that much detail for any reason. I think it's generally safe to assume that there is some visible 'tell' that lets a character know that someone has cast a particular spell upon them. It just is never really RPed exactly what that is because it's one of those gray areas. I'm not sure if this is the answer you were looking for but I do hope it helps. Also rather than citing the name of the spell, prior to battles I've heard the command given akin to: "Mages, please cast wards!"
  12. The OP here is kind of a work-in-progress. I believe you are correct though and will add that to the list of knowledge links it provides. Thank you. If you have any other suggestions please feel free to post or PM me. An expanded guide for those new or unfamiliar to RP is also forthcoming.
  13. Please refrain from posting anything in this sticky that isn't somehow important information. I will be updating the OP later this week to reflect some new links and information and such and thus removing any and all erroneous information. Thank you! :tonberry:
  14. One other thing to keep in mind is that PvP may be considered biased depending on the "gear" element. That is someone who plays through more endgame and has the opportunity to obtain better arms and armor is going to naturally stand a better chance than one of similar skill who is not as well-armed. Some RPers do a lot of endgame activity. Others don't. I'm not sure how accurate it would be to say that someone in the RP world is stronger or faster because they spend more time doing endgame content than someone who would rather take that same time and RP. So that's another variable. I'd like to see exactly how PvP is set up before expressing any sort of preference, but my inclination right now is along the same lines as Deirdre and I know we've had some fast-paced and fluid RP sparring matches in the past. I think for something like duels it could be very interesting and may speed things up - again, so long as both participants are all right with going the PvP route as opposed to other RP methods. I see merit to both methods.
  15. Hello and welcome! I'm always pleased to see a bookish, elezen, or duskwight join the ranks~ And it seems like we may have somewhat similar backgrounds, though I avoided WoW entirely and took a slightly different path through my earlier years of RP. Still, welcome aboard and I hope you enjoy the forums! Don't be a stranger~
  16. I think everything is speculation until the mechanics of PvP are released. I cannot comment for myself which method I think would be better, and I think either PvP or strict "texting it out" (possibly with the aid of /random) will be left to the preference of those involved in the fight. In either case, I think it's one of those things that would need to be agreed upon by all parties involved OOCly beforehand, no matter which method is used. But that's also my own opinion, and the methods for RPing combat are going to be very dependant upon the values and preferences of those involved. I will say, though, that having another avenue for RPing combat like PvP is exciting and I'm looking forward to seeing how it's implemented. But what I predict you'll find is that those with leanings more towards endgame or who PvP regularly outside of RP will probably prefer this method while those who shy away from it will likely prefer to run through things in emotes. Still... more options definitely is a great thing!
  17. I wouldn't mind at all. I actually have something of a project relating to this in the works (more like in the finishing stages) and something from that may be relevent, depending on the nature of your questions. Feel free to shoot me a PM though, in any case.
  18. Can't really go into too much detail about the height test or post anything "official" one way or the other until NDA is lifted, but you can probably glean some information from THIS THREAD which in turn spurned from when Deirdre's art thread kind of got derailed by a discussion about height. The intended project itself has been in planning stages for several months now though. I figure it will be all right to post some baseline height ranges for each race/gender (and in the case of hyur, 'clan' as well) based on observations from 1.0 and extrapolations from things which are not concealed beneath NDA. If you want more info feel free to send me a PM.
  19. Welcome back to Final Fantasy XIV from another married duo~ 8-)
  20. As one of the non-Skypers I think there are still enough avenues of communication by which to disseminate the information. For the purposes of the height test that some of us may be conducting, I figured on assembling those willing to help on something reasonably concrete - perhaps the last server alphabetically (as an example). By the time we're done with that hopefully everyone else will have settled on a server and that information passed along. I'm not really too worried. It's not like it will be a huge pain in the rear to re-roll a beta character anyway, for those in the beta.
  21. I think something like this sounds like a good idea. But what if the lists get sorted by population size or something and change from one player to the next?
  22. This brings up another point which is one of those things that kind of irks me in RP, but is left to characters' individual preferences. I should point out first that this is simply my opinion. But "accomplishment RP" and the speaking of rewards received in-character in specific terms has always kind of rubbed me the wrong way. I can appreciate that some items are difficult to attain, but an individual character isn't necessarily going to be the only one to obtain such an item. I've seen this a few times in XIV since I started - where someone speaks at length about an item they received and an IC story behind it which is tied specifically to some series of events in the game, possibly including spoilers for anyone else who might be trying to attain a similar item (AF armor, for instance). Some of those storylines make you out to be like the sole hero of the Universe. If you take all that stuff literally according to the quest lines and such, than it's likely some RPers aren't going to regard you very seriously. At a certain point it almost seems like that endgame mentality of "I got X item!!" seeps into some characters. I suppose I can understand being excited about finding a certain treasure ICly, but I think to a lot of folks it comes off like using in-character channels to brag about something OOC. For myself I'm usually happy for any fellow RPer's accomplishments, but I can see how others might feel sore/jealous/whatever, and I've seen that happen now on two separate occasions. I hope this doesn't upset anyone. To clarify I couple of points: 24. I would say that it's not always wrong to reference NPC quests. I think it makes a lot of sense for repeatables and such. I would just recommend that some discretion be made for possible spoilers. I've never really encountered an instance where someone was really upset about a minor quest. And telling someone in-character who may be newer that so-and-so-NPC has been looking for able-bodied adventurers to help him out with some stuff seems well within reasonable parameters to me. 25. Obtaining rare and special items should certainly be celebrated OOC. How that transitions into IC should be thought through carefully, however. I like that these questions are kind of open-ended and open to individual interpretation!
  23. That's so awesome!!! Thank you Gerik!!
