Welcome, welcome! Don't be scared to dip your toes in the water or just jump right in! There's a helpful RP Handbook sticky post for folks who may be a bit newer to RP (linked in my sig). It's a bit lengthy but allows you to kind of skip around to various sections depending on what you're most interested in learning about. And if you're working on what your character might be like, it may be helpful to see a list of other characters in the community - the wiki directory that Deirdre manages is a good place to get some info about what other RPers' characters are like! And if you have any questions or anything, please feel free to post or ask any of us. We're all pretty nice and eager to help!

I was pondering over that too. If the average/min/max are all the same, than the results from our first study should be consistent, but that will need to be tested. Though I think someone had some clever ideas for whipping up a nice'n'easy graphic to display the whole thing so another round of screencapping might happen. I suppose it's also possible that the same 5 options are now just on a slider instead of a text selection. I suppose we'll find out for sure soon enough. What really piques my interest is that it looks like there is a TON of hairstyles to choose from now, going by that second screenshot and the fact that the 12 styles in focus may take up only 15-20% of the available options~

I know it's a little off-topic but I felt compelled to respond: While I'm not sorry that you left WoW and eventually found your way here, I am sorry that this happened and it sounds like a pretty lousy way to "enjoy" free time in a game and I certainly don't blame either of you for being upset about it. I don't think there is anything in the lore to suggest that deviating from the nuhn system to an extent that you are comfortable with would be some great sin. The "cultural norms" that S-E has provided are more like guidelines and in many instances can probably be regarded as traditional. I think a lot of characters are more contemporary and Eorzea - being the melting pot it is - is a much more open-minded place and variations on these older ways of thinking are probably "the new normal" in a sense. And I think your character may still be mysterious and exotic as you make her in spite of your/her preferences for handling that particular element of her story. Your choices (and your husband's) are yours and no one should be able to take away from that, or from your enjoyment of the game or the RP experience.

If you'd like the link to the lodestone post by the game's community rep, you can check out this stickied thread as well. There are some other really interesting threads to peruse out there as well. Also, there are no stupid questions here except those that go unasked.

Welcome!! It's good to see more heavy RPers joining up of late!! If you have any questions or anything, please don't hesitate to ask. We're all pretty super-friendly around here.

I think this looks really cool! I'm also fairly confident we could raise the necessary funds for it given how well we did with the annual donations for the forums. That being said, I'm not sure that it would see much use in a couple of months after the game went live. Skype has proven to be a suitable alternative for chat along with various other chat clients and forum systems. If 1.0 was any indication, the RPC forums will probably trend towards less use after the game goes live and RPers segment off into various communities as they did in 1.0. That's not to say that it's not still a great hub for sharing stories, artwork, and organizing cross-LS events. There's plenty of value to it! I'm just not sure the chat/IM add-in would see enough utilization to really justify the cost. But I am curious to see what others would think.

You also don't have to go the arrogant route. While it is a common trait that many elezen share, there is no rule that says you must abide that custom. There appears to be a sort of negative stigma about duskwight elezen and I have enjoyed RPing in a manner that kind of defies that sort of stereotype. I admit though, I like those who RP that sort of haughty Elezen arrogance. Just... don't feel that it's a mandatory thing.

I think you can really use any sort of blogging/journaling source for storing your character's journals. I use our LS forums which should keep journals public for anyone who may want to read them. I think others may use things like blogger, tumblr, or the lodestone blogs. When we began Eva's journals it was on the forums of the LS that we belonged to at that time. Since then Eva has been a part of five different LS's and most had a specific forum dedicated just to threads for characters to use for their journals. And we also keep a backup on a text file on our computer, and a dropbox backup for safekeeping as well. The important thing - at least for us - is the journaling itself. It really helps you get into the character's brain and makes it a lot easier to figure out what she's thinking so that when we do get to the RP her decisions and the motivations beneath them are much clearer. Just pick a blogging site and if you want to publicize it add a link to your sig here on the RPC and/or on your character wiki page. Good luck though! I can only imagine it's challenging to write a journal during this time when there's very little RP going on, but it's also greatly rewarding. Being one of the time-jumpers I'm not really able to keep a journal going, but it is one of those things I'm really, really looking forward to picking back up once Eva steps out of the rift!

You can find a lot of great information about the races right on the main FFXIV page. There is also the official lore forum which features a lot of helpful stickies about racial naming conventions and such. Lots of great theads are posted there as well, and sometimes the devs and other players there will answer questions. Hope this helps you get started. If you have more specific questions, you may ask here as well. Many of us have been immersed in all this lore all throughout 1.0 and would be happy to help offer some guidance or share what we know, especially if it will help shape your character in some way.

Hello and welcome!! 8-) There was something you posted that I agreed with and felt compelled to acknowledge: In XIV in 1.0 I never really encountered anything like this, but it would kind of put me off if I did. Many RPers (myself one of them) have created extensive and elaborate backstories and histories. The wiki pages outline a lot of these details, but I don't think there should be any expectation upon anyone to read these. I can certainly appreciate that it may seem daunting to do all of this "homework" before being able to interact with a character. But new characters with whom your character would be unfamiliar should probably be regarded however your character would regard any stranger without having any previous knowledge of them. I have always made it a point for Eva to be fairly readily approachable, though I certainly have no expectation that anyone know her life story before engaging in a random dialogue with her. I can't speak for all RPers, but I do think most around here adopt a similar sort of policy.

I can't say it any better than the two posts above. But thank you for all of your hard work Kylin.

This makes me super-happy! :bouncy:

33. Technically 32 when she time-skipped but she'll note she's missed her nameday, so she's just going to tack on a year to try and make it all a little less confusing.

Welcome welcome! Nothing to be ashamed of and entirely your choice whether to participate with RP or just kind of enjoy it from the sidelines. Everyone kind of finds enjoyment in it in their own unique way. You've probably already found it by now, but I know Kerr mentioned the RP Handbook some of us scraped together recently. That might be a good place to kind of start out. Of course as everyone has said we're all pretty friendly, so if you have any questions or anything just ask.

Wow! Really love the lalafells and totally digging the addition of the mandragorae (mandragoras? mandies!) in the concept art! Everything looks amazing though!!

Wowow~ These are great! I really love Selene's dress and pose!!

I think I've read somewhere (perhaps on the new official S-E lore forum) that the character customization options during character creation in ARR will allow for some degree of overlap between the two clans of each race. I seem to recall the example given was with regard to the miqo'te slitted eyes for whichever of those clans does not normally exhibit that trait (I think Keepers but I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm mistaken). For RP purposes I don't see any real harm in it. I know that with the elezen clans there seems to be a certain degree of animosity about how each perceives the other. I'm not sure whether or not this holds true for the other races, but perhaps it's something we'll see more of in ARR. I really don't see anything wrong with it personally, since characters will presumably be able to exhibit characteristics of both clans. My worry when I read that news was that it was going to leave each clan somewhat less unique. But ultimately I think it will be to each RPer to decide for him/herself.

Oh! To answer your question I would say that elezen and roegadyn are probably the least selected races around the RP populis. But I may be mistaken on that point. I know a poll was conducted some time ago. Oh I wouldn't say fluent. I think I just make out enough that I can pick out the rest from context maybe. It was an interesting letter and a creative introduction though! Looking forward to reading more~

Hi and welcome to the RPC! It's always great to see more elezen, and duskwight no less! Curious to know a bit more about this fellow! I think it also worries me a bit that I was able to read that letter in Eorzean without much difficulty. Hehe~ At any rate, grab some refreshments and make yourself at home. I hear hugs are now being dispensed as well~

Character Bio's, backstory, background, whatever you wanna call it!
Eva replied to JaydenMoon's topic in RP Discussion
Generally we prefer to keep the details of Eva's backstory somewhat veiled for the sake of keeping the character interesting. These details can better be conveyed through meaningful RP experiences. That said I'll be glad to give an extremely abridged version of Eva's life story, focusing only on the most significant events: 1540- Born in Ishgard 1543- Mother abandons family; Father and her move to sheep farm in Coerthas 1547- Father and her move to Gridania for reasons she doesn't like to discuss 1559- Takes a job at a book shop 1562- Meets a boy and falls in love 1569- Boy dies in an accident a few months after proposing marriage 1570- After dealing with deep depression for a year, moves to Ul'dah to start over 1571- Move back to Gridania to tend to her ailing father 1572- Father passes away - Pulled into 'The Rift' at Battle of Carteneau Flats -
I was going to get all controversial and ask how you defined life, and then I saw this: Since Eva is carrying fraternal twins, and we're pretty well resolute that she'll carry them to term unless something really crazy happens in RP. So she will probably have family, but we haven't decided the gender of the babies yet or anything. So I guess while it may seem a bit cliché, we had to select 'None' for living family. Eva's mother ran away when she was just a little girl and is not a part of her life, and may be dead. Because of this, she may have half-sibling(s) somewhere that she doesn't know about, but her father and mother never had any children together after before or after she was born so she has no direct siblings. Her grandparents also died before she was born so she never knew them, and her uncle and aunt on her father's side were also dead either just before or just after she was born, so she has no memory of either. Her mother was also an only child so no aunt/uncle there. Eva's father passed away almost a year ago to the day (R.I.P. Dy 2U/28/1572) leaving her somewhat alone in the world.
