I usually play (and roleplay) the healer class in most games I've played. My very first foray into this was a game where the healer class was an Empath, and rather than directly healing like a white mage might do, the wounds were first magically transferred unto the healer's own body. This made for a lot of fun and interesting complications where a healer had to worry about him-or-herself not incapacitating themself or bleeding out. Back when THM had the Sacrifice spell (for those who might have been around that far back) there was a similar sort of potential there, but this has since been changed and I've been left having to adapt a bit. (sort of like when they took water magic away from us >.> ) I think a "middle of the road" policy is best to adhere to, and I'm speaking kind of generally. While she was something of a prodigy healer in her youth, Eva went without using magic for 24 years and that talent atrophied with disuse to the point that I don't ever intend on really having her reach that level of skill again (in part because it may be regarded by some as hedging pretty closely to godmode anyway, depending on how much freedom is allowed with regard to the aetherial treatment of injuries). As I've been toting all along, most conflict-type issues can be resolved through OOC communication, and if there is nothing else that I've encouraged throughout my tenure in RP, it is communicating. If you are a wounded and want to keep your wounds for some reason or another, than it's important to let the healer know with a quick OOC /tell. If you are a healer and you're not sure, a simple OOC /tell to ask what the patient is all right with may help save a lot of confusion/frustration down the line. I don't think aetherial healing should be regarded as a be-all end-all method of treating everything. Stalkingrike made a lot of wonderful points and common sense probably ought to dictate a lot of what should and shouldn't be regarded as good practice. I tend to think that the most effective healers in-character will be those that balance aetherial healing techniques with more conventional (i.e. mundane) medical practices such as first aid. For Eva, she is a nurse. She has a good amount of skill with aetherial healing techniques but she's not regrowing limbs, instantly fixing gunshot wounds, etc. I can't even really comment whether such advanced forms of healing should or shouldn't be possible in RP. That's one of those things I think that is left to individual interpretation and I'm not fully sure where I stand on it myself. But Eva can tend smaller wounds, staunch bleeding perhaps, and basic 'maintenance' type healing. This is paired with a medical background which is geared less towards treating specific injuries or surgical type operations and more towards having a good bedside manner, reducing patients' suffering and making them more comfortable and relaxed. She is not a doctor and doesn't possess that kind of knowledge, but she works well in tandem with that sort of RPer (I believe Shiro and Moltove have worked with her in such a capacity on a couple of separate occasions in 1.0). I view it as strengths paired with weaknesses in such a way that it makes for a more interesting character - particularly when put in align with another healer type. But I'm really digressing quite a bit here now. And this will probably always be an issue as there is quite an interesting spectrum of thought regarding what is and isn't really acceptable. I just make it a point to try to stay towards the middle, and of course communicate! (I can't ever stress that enough, in all things)

I will probably be around. We're planning on going to bed early Thursday night. It's like when we were little kids on Christmas Eve - "the sooner you go to bed, the sooner it will be morning and there will be presents under the tree~" /supergiddy :bouncy::bouncy::bouncy::bouncy::bouncy::bouncy::bouncy:

This is all very temporary and such, and I heard Gilgamesh before anything else, so most of us from Crystalline will probably be rolling there. If this winds up not being the popular or agreed upon temporary RP server for whatever reason, than we'll just meet everyone on Balmung at the next stage of the game. I don't see any need for a vote or any such thing though. Looking forward to Friday!!! :bouncy:

I remember your wild red hair you from way before 1.0! Where you been hiding out?

Welcome to the FFXIV RPC! It seems like you have a pretty solid grasp on what sort of character you'll like. I have a feeling you may have a few things in common with Manari. I will be looking forward to making your character's acquaintance in ARR! If you have any questions or anything, please don't be afraid to ask! We don't bite*. Also great artwork!!!! * Most of us don't bite.

My evil doppleganger's name is: Heurriette Frilaix (duskwight elezen female) I'm pondering actually making up an NPC with this name for S&G.

Above all else, I'm just looking forward to role-playing again. I miss it so much.

Eva is well-read, having worked at a book shop for over a decade, and can write very eloquently (usually in her journal). She is not quite as elegant in verbal communication but she's come a long way. Written communication is actually a strongly regarded aspect of her culture and upbringing.

I'm really sorry the discussion kind of went the way it did. I didn't mean to suggest that you had to cater to anyone else in the community at all. Your character is your own to shape and do with as you please, as is each of ours. I was just pointing out that - like most things - there is a community element as well. And I was curious if any consideration was being given to them (more specifically those who may be closest to your character) for all of the reasons that have been brought up. It is kind of a moot point though. I would think in the most significant examples there would be some communication between the individual that was changing that aspect of his/her identity to make sure everyone was on the same page. And I admit I do think it's a big deal. No a character's race or gender isn't everything. But some of the more involved characters who have developed from 1.0 have left their mark on others in the community. I'm perhaps fortunate that nobody close to Eva is making any such change, but it would leave me in a strange predicament if her best friend became a male, or her lover changed to a different race. I'm not saying that a little communication couldn't help iron out the wrinkles there - just that it might be strange for some. I noted in reading through these posts that was some criticism of how things were carried out in 1.0. We had information (albeit not a lot) about each of the races/clans before the 1.0 alpha opened. We made our selections based on that information. Some of the races have seen a lot more information in the lore than others. Some of us have been left to improvise a bit with the little lore we have been given, and hope we see some more. Also it may bear mention that I have RPed in 1.0 with a number of male miqo'te - three or four at least - that were represented by female character models with the hope/intent to switch at ARR. Finally, my stance on the whole thing is that I agree with Yssen insofar as it's ultimately up to the players themselves to choose what they think is best for their individual characters. You have to log in and be able to have fun and own your role - whatever it may be. That said, it helps to be mindful of those others who log in and have interacted with your character, and how this change might also impact them. In many cases, it might not. On the flipside of that coin, there are some options we have now that we didn't have before, so using this transitional 1.0-to-ARR period as a "one time race/gender change" would seem to be a fair thing for those who wanted to utilize that. I admit I'm really ambivalent on the whole matter. I know I had written hundreds of journal entries in my time from 1.0 recording information about people and events, and having to go back and make changes - or regard some RP that happened as having happened differently perhaps - would be offputting to me. I also keep asking myself how things might have played out differently if so-and-so was a male instead of a female, or of a different race. It is interesting to think about. I wish there was an easy solution that left everyone happy. While a bit abrasive in some cases, the responses so far have been interesting and insightful. I guess it really was food for thought.

This may or may not be a moot point, and if it is I apologize in advance, but if you are maintaining the character's identity and not essentially creating a new character, have you given any thought to how this race change might impact backstory and such? I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with changing race to suit your RP preferences, but there are perhaps some instances where such a retcon could have some pretty awkward implications for some other RPers you may have interacted with in the past or present. I know a number of people are making some pretty drastic changes to pre-existing characters and I thought it might make an interesting discussion topic. The way I see it there are two very good, but opposing points of view here: 1) There were no male miqo'te and female roegadyn options for a given character at 1.0 and something like this would make a lot more sense for a particular character, or provide a more entertaining and enriching experience for that RPer. 2) An established character suddenly changing race leaves a void in explanation. Most people would probably be willing to look the other way (that's kind of my view), but some characters may exhibit racist tendencies (or put more mildly, maybe preferences towards some races more than others) and past interactions might not make sense if we are left to assume that a character was "X race all along". An example of this might be if Anne and Betty were both hyur in 1.0 and were chummy growing up and all that other good stuff, but Anne was secretly prejudiced against roegadyn (perhaps for some very good reason in her backstory). All of the sudden Betty is now a roegadyn in ARR, which leaves the existence of their friendship somewhat hazy. This of course can be worked out between the impacted individuals (as it should be), but I was mostly curious if this has been considered at all by any within the RP community. Retconning in RP is always very tricky business. :frustrated: Also since it was asked, we are not planning any racial or other drastic changes for Eva in ARR. She will appear mostly as she was in 1.0 with possibly a few minor cosmetic alterations. (and I'm really frekkin' looking forward to the long hair~)

Don't feel bad. Many of us have similar backgrounds! (and are also perhaps a bit old -.- ) Welcome to the RPC!! :tonberry:

Great job!! Really love the picture of Nari~

Also added a rather extensive blurb briefly detailing Eva as a character and the playstyle I strive for, and also outlining briefly what sort of RPers might most benefit from my advice. I'm always happy to answer any questions though!

I would be happy to work with the both of you!:love:

RP Servers: A Discussion (mods please read before locking..)
Eva replied to Mtoto Wamoto's topic in RP Discussion
I'm personally unfamiliar with GW2 or its community but since this has been used as an example to support the counterargument I thought I would simply point out that these two servers appear to be split based on player demongraphics (specifically time zones, and possibly also server location if they are housed on separate continents). What we are encountering here is a completely different demographic split. Ellie and Blade have summed up my views succinctly in their above posts so I will not beat the proverbial dead horse other than to say that I personally would fully support a movement to shift the RPC's nomenclature/branding to reflect that it is dedicated to the large assembly of RPers that have selected Balmung and chosen to remain there. I will probably refrain from contributing any further in this thread because I do not envision anyone being able to change anyone else's decisions, but I am sorry again if anyone is offended by this opinion. -
Holy crow~ :surprise: I know I feel like I'm repeating myself a lot in this thread, but these are OUTSTANDING!!!
