In my old apartment, my computer and 40" lcd were crammed into my bedroom. I've never trusted wireless keyboards, so I paired a wireless mouse up with my USB-extended G15 (old skool, not that new crap) and chill in bed while doing Dynamis or longwinded xp parties. Had to run a 30' VGA cable around the perimeter of the room, and used an audio A-B switch to switch the sound back and forth between the computer speakers and the TV, but it worked pretty well.

This will be an ongoing work in progress, but I'm hoping to compile as much relevent information as possible on one place, and couple it with links to threads containing important topics and current discussions. May add a FAQ section later on as well. OOC LINKSHELLS The primary OOC linkshell [balmung] in which all RPers are welcome under is called: Intermission. If you're still taking requests, you could try drawing Eva. I can send you a PM with the specifics if you're up for it. I've been trying this myself, but can't quite seem to get it just right.

If that's the test I think it is, Eva scored a -2 on it. >.> I had to actually change a couple things around just to make her somewhat interesting. Now I think she gets a 4. Dyterium scored a fair bit higher, but I like to think I've learned some things in my old age. And Eva's eyes aren't piercing/burning/etc. They're lavender...

I don't know about auto-attack, but I can see them either releasing some sort of 'gambit' system, or if they don't I'm sure someone will whip up a 3rd party app that'll do it. >.>

Here's one solution to your dilemma:

For the name alone... you sir, are made of win, donuts, and awesome!! I might actually give this one a try too. :cheer:

You're probably a better person than I am, Armi. I'm a lot more cyncial and jaded than I used to be. There are a few people here 'from those days' who've wronged me and I will be civil to them, but I have no desire to RP with any of them. I would say it's nothing personal... but, it kinda is...
-
While I wouldn't necessarily say I hold any grudges, there are a few people out there I wouldn't piss on if they were on fire...

Some days I'm surprised that it endured as much as it did. It was a good shell. I'll miss it.

Ironic that this thread pops up on today's date... I can write a very interesting novel, outlining the events of my life between August of 2005 and September of 2007. It's strange how two years of anger and resentment took probably about the same length of time to overcome after the endpoint. I would be upset about losing four years of my life, if not for the fact that I learned some extraordinarily valuable lessons. Most of Sylph from FFXI knows all about this awful story, so I'll try to keep it brief, relevent, avoid naming any specific individuals, and I'll try to keep it relatively QQ-free. I might wind up going into more detail if there's an RPCV episode dedicated to the topic, which I know has been discussed. I may at one time have been regarded as the jealous boyfriend type. I had issues in a prior relationship which left me insecure. But I did get involved OOCly with a character's love interest. After an extended friendship a couple of meetings, and countless hours of long-distance cell phone bill-rackage, I decided to move 1600 miles away from everything I knew on a leap of faith. The fact is the girl I had fallen for had greatly misrepresented herself, and if I wasn't so lovestruck I probably would have seen the warning signs even before I moved out there. We had decided to maintain the RP romance, which had turned to a RP marriage by that point. It wasn't long before the problems manifested themselves. I trusted her, but I wasn't thrilled about some of the stuff she was RPing, and expressed this to her. Long story short, she turned out to be immature and a compulsive liar. I got burned by her, a couple people whom I considered online friends, and a flatmate who was at that time my best friend. There's more to it than that, but that's really the gist of it. I've found a new relationship now, much closer to home. I'm not hopeful that she'll be a RPer with us (but it still remains to be seen, she did roll up a miqo'te the other night!). I've resolved that in all probability, I'm not going to do any relationship RP with Eva. Honestly, that was a large part of the allure of making a female character. Her storyline leaves off in such a way that she's more or less a widow, and while the possibility may be out there to do something lighthearted with it later on, it's going to depend on what I'm comfortable with, and how my RL girlfriend would feel about it. I do hope to have many IC friendships though. I can't speak as to how people in RL relationships should RP their relationships. That should be up to them. But I will say that both parties involved should be in agreement and comfortable with the process, otherwise [melo]drama will almost certainly ensue.

That reminds me! Is 'preform' vs. 'perform' a British-English thing? I've seen 'preform' written, and my Firefox isn't red-underlining it or anything, so I'm guessing maybe it's just an alternate spelling? It always makes me cringe though...

Actually the little guide is wrong, about effect-affect. Affect could be a noun, if you're talking about psychology. Like how someone's affect might change after a different medication regimen. And I think I mess up 'definitely' as well sometimes. I used to be really horrible with another word, but I totally forget what it was. Whatever it is, I spell it correctly now, but every time I do, the thought goes through my head, "I can't believe I always used to misspell this." So the next time I write it, I'll edit this. Cuz that's when I'll remember. lol I just wanted to be clear that I'm not a grammar nazi either. I'm more of a stickler in writing than in RP. And even if something burns my eyes, I just let it go normally unless someone is specifically asking for constructive criticism about a piece of writing or something. While the 'your/you're' and 'they're/there/their' gets me, I usually just figure, "As least they didn't type 'ur'." And a friend of mine has the best quote in their IM profile at work: If you say 'plz' because it's shorter than 'please', I will say 'no' because it's shorter than 'yes'.

Ah! You're right! Too much, too big, too awesome, too nitpicky. :approve: Ummm... Maybe if it replaces with 'as well' or 'excessively' it gets two O's? I dunno... Yeah, I can certainly see how it could be confusing, especially from a non-native speaker perspective!
-
'Who' vs. 'whom' gets me sometimes as well. I think an easy way of remember the 'too' vs. 'to' for those who have trouble with it would be to try to replace the word with 'as well' and if it makes sense, it should have two O's. I can't think of many instances where this wouldn't work. After awhile this stuff kind of becomes automatic. I know there are a lot of subtleties between American English and British English as well. No matter how many times I see it, the word 'organication' or 'organice' just looks wrong to me, and I remember a fellow down in Sacrarium a couple years back proclaiming that I was spelling it incorrectly as 'organized' and that all Americans were wrong, or somesuch. Nuances like that don't really bother me. There will always be cultural differences. It's the stuff like what was outlined in that link where it's Universally correct but often mistaken anyway that gets me. Maybe I'm just getting old...

Nymeia here. Interesting results so far. Not at all what I was expecting. I'm surprised to see Llymlaen as a popular choice.

This is a Yahoo article from last week that a coworker just reminded me about - we had recently had a discussion about the usage of 'affect' versus 'effect' in updating notes on one of our service call tickets. I thought this might be relevent, or at least a nice brush-up, for a group of people who do a good deal of typing/writing: http://shine.yahoo.com/channel/life/10- ... CA55AE989C I know I'm pretty good with the 'their<>they're<>there' and such, but the one that always seems to get me is the its vs. it's. Most of these just burn my eyes to read... I get that improper spelling, grammar, and punctuation don't always necessarily need to be used on the Internet in order to convey one's point, and I have no expectation that everyone should write perfectly all the time. But it can be distracting and may deter from RP if someone is constantly repeating the same types of mistakes. Anyway, I just thought I would share. The more you know. :approve:

Just a simple voting booth for which patron deity you're planning to choose for you main character. Please note that this does not mean the game mechanics choice, but rather how your main character will RP - thus I've added a few 'neutral' options. Please feel free to post comment and explain your choice, if you so choose. I'm curious about the results, and have certain suspicions. :approve:

Anguish Nearly one year ago "Kes Zelorius?" She jumped, startled, as the gray-skinned roegadyn approached the bench near that lake upon which she was seated. Her fingers delicately held a pen over a sheet of paper - a response to a letter that she had received from her fiancee earlier that day. Her tension subsided slightly when she noticed his left arm was held firmly in place over his chest by a large cotton sling. It wasn't unheard of for strangers to approach this secluded spot near the lake, but his sudden arrival had startled her, jolting her away from her writing. The forlorn expression on his face signaled some great sorrow though. "Yes?" She spoke timidly, unsure at what the stranger's intentions were. "You know Pemenicaux Ianneira, right? I mean, you're his girl?" She nodded, a knot forming in the back of her throat as she grew more and more concerned by the grim expression on his face. "There... w-was an accident..." The roegadyn looked down at his feet as he stuttered. Kes only stared blankly at him. "Pemenicaux... d-didn't make it..." He looked as though he wanted to reach out with his good arm to pat her consolingly but was restraining himself. He was clearly not accustomed to delivering news of misfortune like this. "No... No, no, no..." Tears began to form in the fair-skinned elezen's eyes as the roegadyn fidgeted awkwardly. "We were in the s-same unit, and early this m-morning there was... an ex- an explosion. My arm..." The large man gave a sidelong glance at the lame arm slung over his chest as though it no longer belonged to him. He then seemed to realize his own injury was rather trivial compared to what she had lost and cut off his explanation. "I... I'm sorry. There was nothing we could do. In his last minutes alive, he said that no one would have told you. He and I had become... g-good friends. It was... it was his last wish that I find you and tell you. He said you came to this spot often." He cleared his throat before continuing, "An envoy will be deployed to carry word to his f-f-family, but he said no one would have found you and told you..." He seemed confused about all of this, and it would have made perfect sense to her if she hadn't been overcome with grief. Tears streamed down her face as she wept openly. He looked shaken, as though he might join her and break down bawling at any moment himself. Opening her mouth to speak, the knot that had formed in her throat blocked any kind of sound from projecting, and she began crying more intensely. "He had a gentle way about him..." He finally sat down on one of the adjacent benches. "N-never really made much sense for him to be a s-s-soldier. Didn't really suit the man..." Sighing, he shrugged, his good hand wiping an imaginary smudge from his face. It was clear he wasn't sure what to say. "He... spoke about you a great deal. It was obvious he was in l-love with you." The roegadyn looked down at the ground between his feet as her sobs grew louder. "I am so sorry..." After several moments of her crying and his sitting nervously beside her, she wiped her face and peered at the man through still-watery eyes. He sat awkwardly on his bench, scratching an itch that wasn't real, unable to make eye contact with her. She took a deep breath and swallowed the lump in her throat, "I'm sorry about your arm, Mister...?" She sniffled. It seemed silly and deflective, but she was ashamed at her response and wanted to find something, anything else to talk about for the moment. "Oh, it's Thormi. Just Thormi. And thank you. They say I might be able to use it again someday..." Sensing his nervousness, she nodded absently and looked away from him, staring blankly out at the rippling surface of the nearby lake. "You can go Thormi. Thank you for letting me know..." He looked relieved as he stood back up from his bench. "If you need me, I'll be at the inn until tomorrow. I am so s-sorry for your loss..." Bowing his head, he trudged away slowly with his head hung low, walking across the grass parallel to a field of overgrown sunflowers until he finally disappeared from sight. Once he was gone, she allowed the floodgates to open, crying unabashedly for hours over the loss of the only man she had ever truly loved.

I did something like this as well - for awhile. The daughter stuck around (and has grown up into an adult character all her own for FF14). Of course the 'marriage' aspect didn't work out due to epic RL phail (oh the stories I could tell....) but suffice it to say, Eva knows very little about her mother, and that's probably a good thing. So I guess there was drama there, which was interesting from an outsider perspective, and I cannot argue that it didn't make for some good RP, because it did. I guess it would have been nice if it didn't corelate with RL drama that was going on simultaneously. :frustrated: Fortunately, a lot of good came out of that awfulness. :approve:

Maybe so, and if it's unique and over-the-top and done with a certain degree of tact, it might be just fine. It's when others see it and want to do something similar - bandwagoning happens and as unique and original as it may have been, it pretty much becomes bastardized. The first 'demon' possession type story that was run in Crystalline was actually very well done, but when a few others saw this and decided to incorporate it into their own stories (often in very silly and blatant ways as opposed to the original RPer's more subtle method), the entire thing just got derailed, which really sucks because it was going so well before that. I guess there's something to be said for 'imitation is the highest form of flattery', but then again when its done with a complete lack of discretion, it invites all kinds of chaos. The moral here is kind of to just appreciate a good story arc from your character's own established role, even if it's original and a little out there. Those who may feel the need to adopt or inherit this aspect of a story for their own character may wind up ruining it for everyone. And I guess the underlying message here is that, while everyone pays the same subscription fee and is entitled to play the game how they see fit, some careful consideration must be given to how the greater RP community will perceive your character, including the traits and characteristics given to him/her and where they come from.

300....? (sorry, it had to be done)
