Across the room the elezen girl and the lalafell were engaged in quiet conversation. It seemed apparent that they were planning something, as she was gesturing wildly and pointing at certain spots on a map. "Here, here, and... here!" she winked at the lalafell boy who looked particularly baffled. "And he said 20 minutes, but let's not push 15, hmm?" "Awright Orry, but what happens if I get caught?" "Well, I'll be nearby to bail you out. I'll, ah, create a diversion!" She made a grandiose gesture with her hands. "I can be quite convincing when I need to be." "When you need to be..." the young lalafell looked dubious. "So how much are we getting for this." "Not enough..." she muttered under her breath. The lalafell only nodded as she rose from the table, leaving a few of the coins stacked neatly beside her napkin for the barmaid. "Service here's lousy... C'mon, let's get one more and get outta here..." Looking relieved at the suggestion, 'Orry's' companion hopped up from his seat and dusted himself off, stuffed a stubby hand into his pocket and gingerly placed another coin atop the pile when he thought she wasn't looking. The pair walked away from the table over to the cramped bar, one waiting patiently and the other tapping her foot in agitation as the bartender struggled to remember everyone's orders as he poured drink after drink, apparently oblivious to the duo's arrival.

[At a nearby table] "Gods almighty!" The voice was a bit louder than she had intended it to be, and a few of the patrons tilted their heads in the direction of their table at the sound of her fist striking it. The scruffy-looking man sitting across from her leaned back in his seat, a smug grin plastered across his wide expanse of a face. The voice belonged to a younger elezen woman, probably in her early 20's. Her annoyance was plain for anyone to view as she spoke again, in a quieter tone now after the patrons had turned back to their mugs of ale and their snifters of brandy. "Alright... 20% but not a gil more. I'm doing all the work here..." she huffed. Standing up, the middle-aged, scruffy-looking elezen man ran his fingers through salt-and-pepper hair. "You wouldn't have known about this opportunity if I had not mentioned it. Just remember you only have 20 minutes. The sentry is like clockwork in his patrol." Waving a hand dismissively she continued, "I heard you the first time, old-timer." Shaking his head and muttering something under his breath he began to walk toward the exit. "Tut tut..." she warned loudly. "Aren't we forgetting something?" Smiling, he turned around withdrawing a small burlap pouch from within the folds of his cloak. Without so much as a word he tossed it to her, and headed for the door, casting a wry grin at a woman across the room and winking. He handed the barmaid a tip, and exited the Drowning Wench. She dumped the contents of the pouch onto a cloth napkin so as not to draw any further attention. Counting the currency she grunted to herself, "Shortchanged again... He said 10% up front..." She leaned her head back and gave an exasperated sigh. "You can come out now." she brushed a few strands of her lavender-highlighted blonde hair from her face as she kicked at something beneath the table. A lalafell boy jumped up from beneath the table where he had been hiding and sat down on the bench beside her. "Time for work yet Orry?" "Soon."

I don't know how much I can publicly share, but I will say that it was a thoroughally enjoyable experience - especially character creation (omg!!) At times though, it didn't feel like a Final Fantasy game. Regardless it was most certainly not a letdown and I'm looking forward to the Saturday evening window now. If anyone has any specific questions or would like to see any screencaps, please feel free to PM me.

I wasn't aware there was an IRC for it. I'll look it up later on this evening after work when I get back from the gym. If we wind up on the same server, maybe you can help me muddle through the 'newbie' phase. :cheer:

Ok, so it's not Beta. It's still Alpha. And after spending about 45 minutes trying to log in over and over after work yesterday, I came to find out that there are particular windows of time where alpha testing occurs, the next I believe to take place tonight (much to the dismay of my limbus group lol). Anyway, I'm 'Zelorius' on the tester boards if you want to reach out to me. I know they've been talking about multiple servers, so I don't know if I'll be able to find anyone or not. I'm not planning to make 'Kes' since she will not be from Limsa but I have a few ideas bouncing around for a character that may have some involvement with her story.

Still playing Final Fantasy XI mostly. (and sometimes Mario Kart Wii with the gf!) I've pretty much inherited leadership responsibilities for Limbus on Mon/Thur which is becoming more of a headache than its worth. I do salvage after limbus both nights when I can keep myself awake that late, and I sometimes do dynamis on Wed/Sat, depending on what's going on in RL. Sun/Tue/Fri I relax and while it's not a game, we've been going to the gym and watching all of the episodes of Star Trek: TNG during what little free time there is (Tuesday has become Sushi/TNG night now that Lost/V are done).

No early login for me, looks like. I get this message when I try:

As far as convenience stores seem to go, this one doesn't seem like it would be a bad one to work at. One of my standout memories from being an Okie was laughing at the name for a good 15 minutes or so... Suffice it to say, Dante is awesome! And weird though Jersey may be, I'm still looking forward to taking some time off work and visiting the southern part of the state in late summer or early fall.

:cheer: I just got my email today that I'm approved for Beta! Tester website available for login on 6/2 apparently. So who else is in?

I don't know that my vote can officially be changed in the poll, but after viewing the pictures and re-reading, I find myself swaying away from Ul'dah and am actually quite enamored with Gridania. Maybe we'll get more information soon.
-
I really like Ul'dah and cast my vote for there even though I'm still somewhat unresolved on it. Part of what's putting me off is the popularity of it. The other two also have their charms for me and I could see either working with the story I've started building framework for. I'm sure once I get home and see the pictures I'll probably be an Ul'dah fanatic like everyone else though.

Maybe just take the suggestions posted here and draft up another batch based on everything suggested here and in the other thread, then make the 2nd [merged] vote count. I think it may have been a little unclear in the other thread whose examples were whose and now that everything is drawn out more completely it makes a bit more sense to everyone and we're able to fit the pieces together more completely this way. That's just my take on it though. I had to go back and forth a bit to see which examples were whose.

I voted for Option #2 as it was more elaborately outlined, but I think that you should add the example from Option #1 to it as well.

Heya Endi!!!! I somehow suspect Endi v2.0 won't like Kes as much as she liked Dy. It's sure gonna be interesting to see what happens though!!! :cheer:

Riki's post seems most comprehensive and contains specific examples. I'd see if he would like to amend anything that was included in the couple of posts after his and then just roll with that.

I tend to look at it more like beta-testing, where the goal is to "break" the metaphoric glass or otherwise poke holes into it so that they may be patched up prior to drinking (whiskey in mouth > whiskey on floor). I think 6-7 years of Crystalline management has made me cynical and I tend to deal a lot with 'worst case what-if scenarios' as evidenced by many of the earlier posts I made on this forum whereby Tsumi and others often had to smack me down by assuring me that not everyone behaves like a toddler. The above example, as I already agreed, is not godmode but rather an example of how assumption or miscommunication could potentially arise and cause OOC conflict, bitterness, and generally has the capacity to ruin one or more persons' enjoyment of the game. Not saying this is the norm, or that it would even happen often. Just saying it's possible, and while a bit of a tangent, it might be worth thinking about. Also, poking holes in the glass is a bit different than blowing holes into poor Ol' Yeller, isn't it? :?

If it was a well-documented fact that UG was very hygenic and APM clearly knew this and made the claim that his feet stunk when they clearly did not, than yes I think he could be labeled a liar or just out of his gourd. I made the statement based on the fact that APM unknowingly made the assumption (you know what they say about assumptions) that UG's feet smelled, when in fact they did not. While not explicitly godmode (unless perceived as such by the extremely sensitive, as Tyriont pointed out), this would be the result of a breakdown of communication whereby APM probably should have done the responsible thing and sent UG a /tell inquiring if this was an ok emote to make. Sometimes this is feasable and sometimes not. Case in point - and true story. Kes has blonde hair based upon one of these communication failures. It had been planned that her hair would be silver, just like her father's. This was never expressly communicated to anyone, and at some point several months later someone I was RPing with - I believe it was Hirilonde - made some mention of how long Kes's blonde hair had become, or something to that effect. He had probably assumed this based on the way the character's mother looked, and I had never at any point publicly or on storyline post indicated that she was supposed to have silver hair. It wasn't a big deal for me and I just rolled with it, but some people might take issue with inconsistencies such as this. Again, this sort of deviates away from the godmode discussion at hand, but I did think it was worth mentioning. Clearly Riki was right and the incident should not be construed so much as godmode so much as a potential mixup in communication.

I'll go against the grain and cast my vote for the 'Staff of Greatness' one. Although I did like the Aguacatin one as well.

Excellent points by all! The one thing I try to remember when dealing with both godmode and metagaming is that both anomolies deal specifically with boundaries. From my perspective, metagaming is simply the improper passage of information from player to character, or in even shorter terms, "allowing your character to know something that they shouldn't." The most important thing one should consider when RPing something that is potentially 'godmodish' is whether those actions will breach one's own bounds and cross over into another RPer's. One should always try to put him/herself in the position of examining how he/she would feel if another character infringed upon these boundaries in the opposite direction. "Would I be offended if someone did this to me?" should be in mind. In the case of the attack situation, the opponent's thoughts should be taken into consideration. Maybe in an effort to avoid some kind of 'cheesy' fight scene dialogue, the participants arrange (in /tell or somesuch) that certain hits can land without doing the passive 'aims for' such, which admittedly can grow tedious during long fights. In the case of 'superpowers' and such, it's not just one person that's impacted, but potentially everyone in the community who may be made to feel diminished by such a thing. Consideration must be given to one's actions before taking them - particularly the extreme. And the only one thing I have issue with from the above examples is this: This could be construed as godmode under certain circumstances. Perhaps UnfortunateGuy goes to painful lengths with his personal hygiene to the point where he would be offended at such an accusation. In the spirit of RP this can easily be played off as discovering another source of the offending odor, but it crosses that same line as assuming another character's thoughts/response. To conclude all of this, I agree that the RPC should have some sort of definition of godmode/metagaming. I don't think it should be up to the RPC to determine how far these bounds should reach, though. That seems like it will be something that each guild will have to decide for itself. I know it hasn't been brought up because it was probably inferred, but I just wanted to mention that.

Nope: http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Days_of_the_Week Fire > Earth > Water > Wind > Ice > Lightning > Light > Dark In terms of day progression. Elemental weakness is a little different: Fire > Ice > Wind > Earth > Lightning > Water > Fire ...etc. and ( Dark <<>> Light ) I just thought it was cool that the sequence of days is keeping the same elemental progression as the 'moons' on the Eorzaan calendar. :approve:

From what I gather, it should be able to run on this rig, probably not too badly either. It will be interesting to see how the specs differ when the game goes live.
-
I had to change mine from 7/9 to 9/7 to make it work. My own birthday is 1/20 though, and that just wouldn't work for anything. lol
-
(Gungnir or gtfo!) Seriously, I just noticed that the order of 'months' or moons goes the same as two iterations of the elemental days in FFXI, discounting Lightsday and Darksday. I never realized they went in sequence until just now. That's pretty awesome stuff!!

The game will take up part of that. I also do a good deal of work with Photoshop and various other graphics, audio, and video editing software (Adobe Premiere and SoundForge primarily), and sometimes I have the IDE for PHP up as well. And I have a hard time closing Firefox tabs/windows. It's a problem. I think Firefox alone with all of the tabs/windows I keep open gobbles up about 3gb. A lot of this stuff I do simultaneously. You don't know me very well then.

I considered going the PS3 route, but I remember how different the gameplay felt going from PS2 (chillin' on the sofa with a controller and not chatting much) and the PC (sitting at the computer with the full keyboard). I eventually gave up the PS2 for everything except bazaar mule. lol I'm sure it will be different with FFXIV at first, but I wonder as computer hardware evolves what will happen. I recently purchased a new computer which should be able to handle it though (i7 930, 12gb ram, 2tb hdd, 2x ATI 5770 in Xfire, thank you Uncle Sam!!), so I think I'm all set now - just waiting for Beta/Release so I can get my hands dirty!! :bounce:
