  1. I have both a feisty and a quiet introspective character, and would be happy to rp either one with you
  2. I could possibly have an antagonist for you.
  3. I'd be down for some combat training to. Will pm contact info
  4. Hello and welcome! Only advice is give to a new rper is jump in and dont be afraid! Everyone makes 'mistakes' when beginning rp but the best way to learn the etiquette is through experience and asking lots of questions. Enjoy!
  5. Hi! You're in luck, considering my character is a healer! Hey! Give me a poke in game sometime or pm me here and see if we can set something up.
  6. Looking for a medical tutor for my Xaela Noh Karada, who is looking to switch careers. The more detail oriented the better! I've just come back to FFXIV, So will be doing more pve than rp for the time being, but am hoping to ease back into it with maybe once a week sessions? Hope to hear some replies from those interested in tutor/pupil rp!
  7. This is a game where I can raise people from the dead. I really don't think there's such a thing as "realism transgressions." I never use Raise type skills in my rp though. Removal of the consequence of death is a serious no no in my own rp tastes. If someone has been raised, I say they were on the brink of death, but not actually dead. So in this instance it is like cpr ^^
  8. I once composed a version of 'what does the fox say' but changed it to 'what does the carby say'. It was meant for luls, and the character who sang it was a very whimsical, not-serious character. No one seemed perturbed by my efforts. I suppose a more 'serious' char might need to be a little more careful, but quite honestly... isn't the point of rp to be inventive, creative, and have fun? Why not be a jpop bard who's very upbeat and changes the music landscape?
  9. Hey Steel. I've been where you are several times, and particularly in ffxiv. Usually it can be attributed to one of two things (or both things): A) your character has been derailed. This can happen when your character goes so off course, that you no longer know who they are. It can be very difficult to connect to them, and rp begins to feel like a chore. This is why I've always advocated alts. Alts can bring a breath of fresh air in, while your other character 'rests'. Sometimes you just need a mental break from a character. Think of it as avoiding a friend who's been getting on your nerves lately . When you go back, everything's cool, and you're able to have fun again! These ebbs and flows are pretty normal in rp though, so don't get discouraged! B) you don't like the game. This is what happened to me with ffxiv. I really liked this community a lot (enough to still check these forums two months after I left the game). They are mature and friendly, and work to resolve their differences. So I tried reaaaalllly hard to like the game. Because of the community. But in the end, I had to face the fact that ffxiv has the most boring, unimpressive combat I've ever seen (just my personal opinion. I'm happy for the folks who are having a good time here!). My displeasure with the game was affecting how I approached other aspects: when there was no rp I was just frustrated and started to feel burnt out. Rp and community unfortunately is not enough if you do not like the game. Luckily I've found a game I like very much, and I haven't even rp'd in 3 weeks (as opposed to everyday in ffxiv) because I'm having so much fun. And finally, sometimes you just ned to step away for a week or two. Take a break. Clear your mind. Rp exacts a high toll of creative energy, and everyone needs to recharge now and then. Maybe after a break you'll be able to look at the game and your character with fresh eyes. Hopefully 1 of those 3 will work for ya. Good luck!

Pretty much this. As RPers, we are pretty much actors. Engaging in a fair bit of improv, and a little bit of script. Only... we do have an idea of where we'd like our stories to go, and so we also play director; if something is completely ruining the outline of the script we have in our heads, we have to try and reel things in. And this can only be done OOCly. If effective OOC communication is used from the outset, that reeling in might not even have to occur. Even in improv the actors are giving prompts, and oftentimes have to converse with each other OOC to get a feel for where they want to take the scene. And if professional actors use OOC talk, why shouldn't amateur rpers?

I agree it doesn't HAVE to. The OP Nat has alluded to her own char initially trying to enforce her authority over someone (and getting mad when it didn't go as planned), and subsequently learning from it to ask OOCly at what level the person might want law enforcement involved. But the example last night was clearly a case of someone taking over a scene and trying to GM it in a singular direction. Something I've noticed with a lot of lawmen types. I am not obligated to recognize one's authority as lawmen, because in my storyline, my 'criminal' might actually be working undercover, a fact that all local lawmen know, and anyone who outed me would be fired. Just one example of how failure to communicate OOC can backfire or lead to a heated dispute. Hey, if that means I should just rp my stuff in party chat, then I'm fine with that.

I kind of have a problem with anyone who appoints themselves lawman and expects it to be publicly accepted. Basically, you are appointing yourself GM over someone else's character(s) without those players prior consent. You are not GM over Balmung, or Gilgamesh, and should not assume such authority. Just because someone is rping in public, does not give you the right to take control of the scene. YOU ARE ENTERING THEIR STORY, they are not entering yours. There is no such thing as a 'global' Eorzean story, in which your character's authority is absolute. There would simply be too many conflicting inconsistencies amongst all the micro-canons that exist. Instead, dial back your character and concede control of the scene to the players whose scene you are joining. You are a player in their scenario, not a GM. That means you can suggest and perform actions, but cannot directly control the environment, or what happens to their characters. The decision of what happens to them in relation to your actions rests solely on them. Remember, you chose to enter their story, not the other way around. OOCly of course, you may ask if you can GM the scene and assume control, but they as players still have a right to opt out if you prove to be a poor GM (as in not leaving any outs, as someone else alluded to). This is not tabletop rp, where the law of dice decides whether Nat's charcter gets to escape or not,. Without this universal, agreed upon system, you must allow the authors decide the outcome of their characters fates, unless otherwise explicitly agreed upon beforehand. To automatically assume control of the scene makes you an rp bully.
  13. To be fair, it's a linkshell. If you wanted to join this, you could get your PvE/endgame needs from another linkshell or a free company. Yep yep, that's exactly the reason it would be a LS and not a FC Also, the reason why I was only gonna have 2 gatherings a week. So people had plenty of time with their FC's
  14. Had a concept to run, of a Knights training academy RP LS. This is a pure rp group with no pve, endgame, or voicechat support. Players would come in as Pages, and be evaluated ICly, and then be awarded points OOCly in several different catergories pertaining to their education. Through participation in classes and other rp storylines, they could earn additional points. Once enough points were earned, they could advance to the rank of squire. At this point they would be able to enter the field with knights. A similar, but longer points system would be employed for them to advance to the rank of knight. Events would be twice a week. On odd weeks it would be two nights of knight classes. On even weeks it would be one night of class, and one story-based rp session, which could be anything from IC dungeon runs, to telling personal stories, to knights riding out en masse to squash an enemy. If demand was high for more rp we could of course cross that bridge when we get there. Though the concept is already established and ready to start rolling, Iknow a majority of people have already found their rp 'homes', which is why I wanted to do an interest check before rolling this out. There would be an application process that focuses primarily on OOC personality. We want friendly, laidback, and socialable people (the LS chat would be OOC, with RP happening face to face) who will help make this group great. We also highly encourage rp newcomers, and those with a love for forum and skype based rp. ICly, it doesn't necessarily matter who you are, so long as you are there to learn. However, it is possibly to get kicked out ICly if you are shown to be evil, incapable of instruction, or consistently disruptive to the learning process. There are also some openings for civilians able to provide services throughout the Knight's keep It doesn't really matter how big or small we are c: if we have about six students interested, it's enough to get started. So let me know if anyone's interested!
  15. Such a cool idea Tier! I'd love to put myself on the list please :0) (it's Izzy) I'm just not sure on which character.... it seems like something Claire would do. So,... yes! Put down Claire Fialo please!
  16. I'm sure I won't add anything new here, but... A: Use OOC communication. A /tell along the lines of 'mind if I jump in?' Should alleviate any anxiety over this. However, if it's rp'd in public, then people should be receptive to others jumping in. Still, there are still the occassional rude people who will react negatively to your jumping in. Trust me, it's not you, it's them. B: Not true. Learning rp terminology, conventions, and good storytelling requires practice, just like everything else. And the only way to do that is to start the same place we all did; clueless and confused :0) C: That just takes time. As your confidence in rp grows, and you meet more and more nice people, this will go away. D: Honestly? I think most wiki pages are self-serving, boring as heck tripe -.-. I don't see the point of them. I'd rather learn about someone's character ICly then read their life story. Just my opinion of course. Good luck! You can do it! We all started where you did!
