I haven't been around that long, but it seemed like there was a lack of tanks and healers before Heavensward went live. It seems like the proportions have shifted a bit. I would say play whatever class you enjoy playing, regardless of role. Fortunately the game makes it easy for you to change your mind down the line. Welcome back. I'm getting introduced myself, but it seems like a pretty diverse community overall.

Even with no threat of any harm of mistreatment, I still carry a lot of my social anxiety over from the real world. It's pretty ridiculous when you think about it. I like getting to know a handful of characters that I may develop friendships with IC and IRL, while also potentially meeting characters my own may end up getting involved with over time. Edit: To anyone who may have missed it, a linkshell has been created here by AquiziTC

I tend not to hang around with groups of other gay men IRL for this exact reason. I would prefer to avoid this in-game myself, and instead just carry on with chat like any other linkshell.

Sorry to post so frequently after my last, but I hadn't seen this reply. This is a great point that I think about at times. I've met several people online who lived in places where other queer folk were uncommon. They didn't have anyone to talk to and very little experience. For some its nice to have a space where you can talk to others who may have been in your situation, or just to hear different perspectives. Everyone's going to want something different out of it.

Everyone's gonna have their own take on it. It's not worth debating. Diversifying is definitely important, and participating with all sorts of individuals and groups, rather than leaning only on. It is very easy for any group to become a little clique that you confine yourself to, but it doesn't have to be that way. That being said, I'm happy to hear of anyone's experiences having played in games: if you've encountered any negative situations, and how you and others have handled it, or if you've encountered any positive situations just by chance.

That explains all those filler quests Papalymo gave me. I'm glad the server is as welcoming as it is. Thanks everyone.

Should be encouraging to be RP'ing Au Ra with all of the related posts going on around here. Happy playing!

OOC, I feel fine among RP communities are they are usually pretty inclusive. Non-RP game communities aren't a different story, but that's not so relevant while talking on a RP forum. The environment is not so threatening anymore, but I think it's nice to be able to find other characters in the same boat. I've seldomly found the opportunity to roleplay any same-sex romances, mainly due to not finding other characters. When I have, it was usually a "you're the only other gay I've ever met" situation. It's a little encouraging to know who's out there. For me, it's less about wanting to be somewhere protected, and more about being somewhere that encourages connections.

I noticed Menphina's Ward wasn't active, and hadn't seen anything else. It could be nice to have a little something like this, if people are into it. I appreciate the feedback from everyone, and am happy to hear about existing Linkshells and people that are known for being queer friendly, even if it isn't their focal point. I have a tendency to struggle a bit trying to get myself involved, so any little bit helps.

This is important! I would never want to exclude anyone, but instead have a place where you're kind of on a level playing field and feel a little comfortable. Even though it's a game and its roleplay, I tend to feel anxiety around this subject, and I'm sure a lot of that carries over from my IRL experiences.

All good points. I personally wouldn't want to limit myself to an exclusive Free Company, since it's not really a category worth confining yourself to. I'm happy to hear what people experienced with RP in this community have to say. I also realize that this may be more appropriate for the "Finding Connections" area, as I initially thought that section was more about looking for a specific thing for a specific character.
-
Note: I'm aware this may be more appropriate for the Connections area after reading through the forums further. Moderators feel to relocate as desired if necessary! I've been away from FF14 for some time now, so I'm trying to make myself familiar with some of the groups that are around. Sorry if dead horses are being beaten. Are there currently any active LGBT organizations on Balmung? Events, Linkshells, Free Companies, and the like? Any OOC or IC social circles? In my early MMO years, I felt groups like this to be important. I've noticed lately that RP communities in games are a lot more open, boasting several LGBT players and characters, and even now I'm seeing more inclusivity for all sorts of relationship types. Do you think there's less of a demand for these sort of things now? Some ideas of why these could be useful: OOC conversation and support. It's good to have some other people going through similar experiences, either to share some camaraderie or offer any advice to others. RP connections. I honestly don't feel unwelcome anymore, but it's nice to be able to make connections between players who play LGBT characters, since you can't really single them out unless they're advertising it regularly. Romance and attraction are pretty common parts of RP, so it helps to be introduced to others without having to post a craigslist ad. I feel like this could be Linkshell or event worthy, or even a loose social network of roleplayers. If there are any resources or existing groups already, please let me know! Edit: The Prismatic Pearl linkshell has been created, and it can be found here.

I. Basic Info Characters: Alderique Valeriant Linkshells: Crescent, RP Levelers Free company: Crescent II. RP Style Amount of RP (light, medium, heavy): Medium/Heavy. Alderique has a lore-abiding background and is constantly developing based on his IC interactions with other players. Perfectly content with light-hearted, chill RP most of the time, but will develop more serious in-depth plots with friends. Views on RP combat and injuries: I'm interested in roll-based combat, and am open to sustaining reasonable injuries. I'm okay with him needing to take time off to recover due to broken limbs, surgeries, and the like. I do not want to lose any limbs, and I have no desire to have my character to die in the near future. Open to purely text-based combat with trusted partners. Views on IC romance: I'm into it! Romance and sex are things I enjoy roleplaying, though I like them to have some in-character substance to lead up to it. I'm not expecting to set my character up on any dates, and won't get into something serious unless I'm comfortable with both the other player and the character. Alderique is in a serious relationship, though he dabbles outside of it as he wishes. Views on non-romantic RP (family ties, etc): I have no interest in other family connections, except for maybe a cousin or something, if there's a purpose to it. Platonic friendships are wonderful, and I'm rather fond of relationships that begin flirtatious and romantic, but end up being purely platonic, but strong. Potentially open to relationships from his past. Views on lore: I am pretty by-the-book on lore, and greatly prefer other players who play the same. I know it's difficult to follow EVERYTHING, but I appreciate a solid attempt at understanding it and sticking with it. Views on chat functions (/say, /linkshell, etc): Speech is usually in quotation marks. My /say and /em are not always IC, as I like quick interactions with people I know when I find them randomly on the street. Context is important, I suppose! III. I am playing FF14 again after a long hiatus, and never introduced myself the last time I was lurking the forums. MMORPG background I've played all sorts of MMOS, starting with an old game called Dark Ages. World of Warcraft, City of Heroes, Wildstar, Ragnarok Online, to name a few. RP experience I've roleplayed in pretty much every MMO I've played, and have participate in some short-lived tabletop roleplaying games (a little Dungeons and Dragons, and more of some Pokemon-themed tabletop games). Character ideas/info Currently playing an Elezen named Alderique Valeriant on Balmung. Currently doing some character development, but trying to stick to some of his mechanical features and history. Currently adventuring, laboring, cooking, gambling. How did you learn about the coalition? I don't remember specifically, but I must have come across it while searching for roleplaying groups when I first started playing. I remembered this place when I recently came back. What kind of a role-player are you aiming to be? Light, medium, or heavy? Light to medium. I like to be in character, but I'm pretty lighthearted and like humor and impulsive dialogue. I generally roleplay myself—I have nothing specific that I want to achieve, other than to immerse myself in a different situation and stimulate my creativity. Open to heavy roleplay, depending on the situation. Anything from real life you're comfortable with sharing? (Work, school, hobbies, etc) I make most of my living as a graphic designer, but have a background in art and illustration. I'm hoping to contribute to the artisan's board if I start doing some sketches.

I want to make sure I understand: Is there a separate server for EU, or is it all the same server, just focusing on the EU time zone?

I would love to attend! I am but a level 10 idiot, though, and do not understand the simple concept of dye. Could one of the event hosts be able to dye a shirt for me if I bring the dye? Assuming that does not cause the clothing to bind to you.

Thank you! I have another character on Cactuar, where a group of people I know play, but I'd like to be part of a larger roleplaying community as well. I'll be easing myself into the community here and keeping an eye out for posts, websites and the like. In the mean time, getting myself to a high enough level for world travel, holiday events and such.
