For reference, and take this what you will, I am a legacy player. The highest job level I have is 25. I am the founder of the linkshell The Seven. Only myself and one other person are legacy members in it. This is to say that THERE ARE linkshells out there that WELCOME new members and WILL intergrade you into their folds quickly and effortless. To make the point as a legacy player, YES there are some linkshells that are clique based even back in 1.0. However, I hope I have helped with my example, and there are others, that there are shells out there that want to make it work and work from the start. Please try and stay together guys! This is what makes this community great and I hope new members are watching this. We have different styles and different answers to RP questions but as you can see there is a style for everyone to find here! That is why I and so many others wanna encourage everyone to stay with Balmung. You will find the style you are looking for because we will be one united community. It is like an all you can eat buffet but first you gotta know the name of the buffet. The name is Balmung! Please consider that. I know that was a bit off topic but it seemed like the perfect place to price the point so many of us have been trying to make about one server for all. Anyways back to topic go Red Mage! Couldn't have beaten FF 1 and 3 without one and played 3 years as one in FF 11.

As someone who RPs a samurai dresses like one and does not use shields as a gladiator I offer the differing oppion. I do refer to myself as a Samurai and when it comes in game I will level that job exclusively. It is up to you. As you can see there is no right answer on the topic. If you are having a good time and calling yourself a red mage I don't know that I this lore breaking. The important thing to gather here is the community is broad and accepting of RPers. We want everyone to feel welcomed and be a part of this.

Geomancer does use an axe but I think that job will come from a mage class if it comes. Blue Mage was mentioned once to not be in the plans at the time they addressed it but they are redoing the bestiary and blue mage is soooo FF and the game is striving to capture classic FF. I just think it will be in there at some point. Yeah lancer would be great cause dragoon is the only job to use lance but khamari in ff 10 used it for the lancet learn ability so it has the history to work.
