I think this is what turns people off lalafell is the stereotype of Popotos and such. I feel a lot of lalafell players arnt taken seriously and dont rp at all and so as a rper of another race you dont see many. A shining example of Lalafell done right would be Gus Pumpkinweed.
-
Its not really that I am playing an underage Lalafell, my lalafell is 27 years old. She doesnt really use the look to her advantage she just isn't taken seriously for being a Lalafell, where as if I was to play a Miqo'te they instantly get stereotyped into being horny cats always on heat.
-
YI would play lalafell a lot more if I was taken seriously as a lalafell. Just because a lalafell is short and childlike does not automatically mean they are all children. Does anyone else feel this way?

Originally my character was a Miqo'te named Katsu Toko, A sort of play on words with Cat being in her name, but it wasn't really meant to be meaningful at all. Rin Qestir is a little more meaningful, Rin being the japanese name for "Bell" or the sound of a bell. Which is an odd name for a Auri who cannot speak. So in a sense, Rin is a silent bell of sorts. And I always thought that was a bit of a cool little thing about her name.

Ah, I get what you mean. I play and RP because I find it fun, that is my most important thing I keep reminding myself, have fun. Emotions or characters feelings IC, OOC, can be a big NO for some people. But most people I talk to say they feel their characters emotions OOC. OOC however I do not act on it. I just enjoy having those feeling whether its of the character in love or feeling depressed for some reason. It lets me see what its like to step into my characters shoes for a moment, and feel what they feel. Just a reminder OOC I wont ahead and be all "My character loves you, so I love you too" it just doesnt work that way and I am just trying to have fun. If not for the emotional side RPing, I would not RP at all.

Sounds like we were all very confused by your OP there. lol Okay, so! A friend and I had been shipping our characters hardcore for a looooooooong time of playing early on when this game came out. She's married, I'm not, but damned if we both weren't utterly in love with how our characters were as a power couple. OOC, there were no personal feels other than knowing she was an amazing person and a great friend. IC though, we were constantly gushing about things and what we loved most or dreaming about new stuff the two were gonna do together, yadda yadda yadda. So in that respect, I feel there is absolutely nothing wrong with falling in love with characters played by others. I have ZOMG feels for lots of characters played by people I know and specifically a man-crush on Warren Castille because Reasons. Bromance! Enjoy it, it makes the game a lot more fun. -Hatter Its hard to describe feelings sometimes. So I didnt really know how to ask the question

Thanks for all the comments, I understand what you all mean. Though I am not looking for love online, I still have those feelings while talking to some people. A lot of people would say not to RP with personal emotions, but I wouldnt RP without emotions since that is my whole goal of RPing. IC most of my characters are looking for love, most never really got very far. But with some people like, this person in particular I feel that a IC relationship would work out. I feel that it has to be agreed on by both parties of course, there have been IC relationships I have cringed at simply because those people dont tear at my heartstrings the way some of the others do. Sometimes I even feel relationships IC are not such a good thing since they can take away from normal RP with others. Meanwhile OOC I am very much feeling my own characters feelings, therefore I feel in love with that character but I am not going to try an actual relationship OOC with that person. I admit it would be nice, but I dont see it happening too much. So just to clarify for people when I said I am falling in love for another character, I mean that in the IC sense of my character is falling for them. But OOC I am feeling these feelings and a real connection between the two.

this has probably been asked before but, every now and then I have had moments where I am able to talk to another player for hours on end. Then they can also do the same to me, for a good hour it felt as if we were in our own little world RPing together. Some of my friends said it was love. And I somewhat agree with them, so is there anything I should know about these sorts of connections in game and in character?

Another, Just in case. No offense or anything, but expressions can really only give you a general idea of a situation, of course they can tell a story themselves, but your examples perhaps give a little too much information. It is fine showing how a character feels, towards the end there it's broke into describing her feelings outright which no one else but your character can take account for. I tend to avoid writing feelings, and focus on the physical body language. Example: She sat down at the table with a loud thud, she noticeably had dark rings around her eyes. Her hair tangled and messy. It was clear she hadn't been sleeping. With another loud thud she planted her face into her arms cradling her head, soon after a loud snoring could be heard from the girl. Over all, I feel you can be descriptive, and over descriptive. None taken! But it's meant to be that way. I may not be used to Roleplaying in FF14, but forums, Muds and secondlife are usually that large, and more. I get that you're in a 3D world, but I wouldn't consider what I posted over descriptive. And while other players cannot directly react to Feelings, it does set tone and mood and helps give a deeper glance into what the player is trying to portray. I'd also like to point out this is for a silent character, who cannot use words to help convey their feelings. Think of it like this. You're reading a book. You read character's thoughts in the book. And that's sorta how I view RP. We're writing a story and it doesn't hurt to give flavor to the tale. I don't mean to offend either, but your example kind of leaves one wanting. Because you don't use feelings, I have no context, there's nothing to describe how tired she is. Just that she's tired. It's also not the best example to use, as the characters in the examples are interacting with people. Also, there is no such thing as too much information. Unless the person you're playing with is Metagaming, they can't truly know anything your character is thinking. They can only react to your speech and physical appearance. We can chalk this up to personal preference if you want, but I don't agree with you. I like the idea that we know she is tired, every sign points to it but it doesn't stray into saying exactly why she is tired. And more importantly it will raise interest in the person she is RPing with into questioning why she is so tired.

Are we talking built in animation emotes or /em emotes? I use a mixture of both currently.

Well to begin with, thanks for all your comments. Currently she has been carrying a notebook she writes to others pretty often. I feel like I could make more use of the mailing system. She is very expressive but I find myself nodding one too many times to agree to questions or something.

My new character is silent, and as such she cannot communicate by voice. I know this may lead to some confusion later down the line. So does anyone have any tips for RPing a silent character?

Would be reading whatever I can get my hands on. In this case it's a bestiary of eorzea.

A personal one, she may break it at some point depending on situations around her. But talking to her is mostly embarrassing like singing or being caught naked.

Rin Qestir is standing at the Quicksand looking over the railing at all the patrons going about their business. She however would ignore them and find her own corner and pull out a book and read it. Shortly later, a man comes along and questions her. However she doesn't speak due to a tribe tradition. She makes a few gestures to say she don't speak, the man glares at her before going about his way. Rin turns back to her book. So I recently renamed my character, and Rin is the result she is a fairly timid young Au Ra female. She is of the Qestir tribe meaning she doesn't speak at all, she can however write fairly well and will voice herself through a notebook. She enjoys reading, and often spends her time around the Quicksand in quiet spots reading. She is friendly, but could seem rude due to her inability to speak. She has a set rule that if she finds a mate she can speak to only them, but has yet to find a mate.

Yep, I dont need no man! Actually I am very lonely... *cries in the corner*
